I’ve done this myself—flown the length of New Zealand’s North and South Islands aboard a private chartered airplane— and it was one of the most memorable trips of my travel career. There is simply no better way to see the many wonders of this beautiful and unspoiled country: its snowy alpine peaks, shimmering glaciers, steaming thermal pools, unusual plants and animals, lush rain forests and sophisticated cities. We’ve arranged a host of local experiences that will show you a New Zealand few travelers see. Plus you’ll travel in the company of Professor Jeffrey Koseff, MS ’78, PhD ’83, who has been instrumental in developing the vision for interdisciplinary work on environmental issues at Stanford. I invite you to

join us on a trip I promise you will never forget.

In the uncertain, often volatile oil market of late, it is difficult to predict fuel costs over the long term and, more specifically, at the time of operation of this voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates at the time of brochure printing. While we will do everything possible to main-tain our prices, if the fuel rates increase significantly, it may be necessary to institute a fuel surcharge.

W H a t t o e X P e C t

We consider this expedition to be a moderately active program that is at times physically demanding and busy. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. There are early-morning departures as well as various combinations of morning, afternoon and evening activities. Daily programs involve one to three miles of walking, often on uneven terrain. Temperatures in January average in the 60s ( ˚F) with moderate precipita-tion. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

Deposit & Final PaymentA $1,000 deposit is required to hold space for this program. Complete and return the attached reservation form or place your deposit online. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability.

Cancellations & refundsDeposits and any payments are fully refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you.

Faculty LeaderProfessor JEFFREY KOSEFF, MS ’78, PHD ’83, joined the Stanford faculty in 1984 in the school of engineering and has been instrumental in developing the vision for interdisciplinary work on environmental issues at Stanford. Professor Koseff’s focus is on the emerging interdisciplinary domain of environmental fluid mechanics, particularly the interaction between physical and biological systems in natural aquatic environments. His interest in water issues was sparked during his childhood in South Africa, where he worked later as a consulting engineer prior to coming to Stanford as a graduate student. About his academic focus Professor Koseff says, “Finding solutions to the major environmental problems that we face this century is one of our great challenges. The confluence of environmental, geological and cultural issues found in New Zealand, together with it being an island nation, make it a fascinating case study for exploring the challenge of achieving true sustainability in the 21st century.” During our trip, Professor Koseff will give a series of talks focused around these issues.

At Stanford: the William Alden and Martha Campbell Professor of Engineering, Michael Forman University Fellow in Undergraduate Education and Perry L. McCarty Director of the Woods Institute for the Environment Numerous teaching awards for excellence BS, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; MS and PhD, Stanford University

Joining Professor Koseff on this expedition is his wife, THALIA ANAGNOS, MS ’79, PHD ’85,an engineering professor at San Jose State University. Her research focuses on earthquake engineering with an emphasis on loss estimation and engineering education. From 2006 to 2008 she served as the president of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, the largest multidisciplinary earthquake-focused organization in the U.S., with a worldwide membership of approximately 2,400 members in 60 countries. During our travel program, Professor Anagnos will discuss the series of earthquakes that devastated Christchurch in the recent past.
