Revealing 1929 as by far the mostprosperous year in the twenty-nineyear history of the organization, thelatest balance sheet of the Sparks-Withington Co., maker of Spartonradio, here, has just been made public,showing the formidable position of thecompany to be at the ratio of ten toone, for quick assets as against quickliabilities. In addition, the earningsstatement as of December 31 last re-veals that the Sparton company is pos-sibly the only, and certainly one of notmore than two or three radio manu-facturing concerns, achieving greaterearnings during the last six months of1929 than during the correspondingperiod of 1928. The net profit for the1929 period was at the rate of $2.40per common share as against $2.05 inthe corresponding term.

Representatives of more than fortylocal radio associations from all sectionsof the country will be in attendance atthe Fourth Annual Convention of theNational Federation of Radio Associa-tions and the Second Annual Conven-tion of the Radio Wholesalers' Associ-ation to be held jointly at the Statlerhotel, this city, next Monday and Tues-day, February 10 and 11. Many promi-nent men in the industry will be pres-ent. A meeting of the board of direc-tors of the Radio Manufacturers' Asso-ciation will be held in the Clevelandhotel, here, on Monday and will bringmany leading manufacturers to thiscity.

Michael Ert, president of the Nation-al Federation of Radio Associations,will officially open his organization'sconvention at a meeting at 9:30 A. M.on Monday. Peter Sampson, head ofthe Radio Wholesalers' Association, hasextended invitations to 900 distributorsfor what he declares will be one ofthe most important conclaves ever heldin the Industry.

The convention will be devoted tobusiness discussions of the problemsnow confronting the radio Industry.Convention officials said today that thegatherings next week will be the first"down -to -the -facts" conferences everheld and leaders in the trade will co-operate in solving the problems now be-fore them.

The Ohio Radio Trade Associationis the official host for the conventions.

The Federation convention will be ofparticular interest to retailers in thatmany of the dealers' most vital prob-lems will be discussed by authorities onthe subject.

Policies will be outlined for the oper-ation of retailers' and wholesalers'organizations for 1930.

The results of the committee activi-ties during the past year will be givenat the convention of the Radio Whole-salers' Association in order that distri-butors may secure facts and figures asto the actual operating conditions.Papers have been prepared by promi-nent wholesalers on subjects that havebeen thoroughly analyzed by means ofquestionaires.

The board of directors of the NationalFederation will meet here Sunday to

price bill, was made today from theHouse Committee on Interstate andForeign Commerce by RepresentativeHuddleston, of Alabama. The AlabamaRepresentative said in part:

"The purpose of this bill is to enablelarge producers to dictate to dealersthe price at which an article shall besold at retail. There is no public de-mand for this bill. It is merely an-other selfish interest measure. It ispressed by interests seeking larger andmore stable profits. The consumer'swelfare is totally ignored.

Music Convention and Show WillBegin June 9 Following RadioTrade Gathering at AtlanticCity-Schedule Will Make Pos-sible Attendance at Both.In order to make it possible for

music dealers who handle radio andmusic merchandise to attend both theradio and music trades conventions andexhibits next June, it has been arrangedto hold the music industry meetingsand exhibition in New York on the weekfollowing the annual convention andtrade show of the Radio Manufactur-ers' Association at Atlantic City. TheMusic Industries Chamber of Commerceand the National Association of MusicIndustries sponsor the music shows.

The RMA events will be held at theseashore resort during the week ofJune 2, and the music industry eventswill follow at the Commodore hotel,New York, during the week of June 9.Last year both conventions were heldIn Chicago during the first week inJune. It is expected that this arrange-ment will increase the attendance ofboth gatherings.

In addition, at Atlantic City there isplanned during the week of the radioshow a meeting of several other radioorganizations including the Instituteof Radio Engineers and meetings ofthe National Federation of Radio Asso-ciations and the Radio WholesalersAssociation.

The second annual meeting of theNewspaper Radio Editors' Associationis also planned at Atlantic City dur-ing the show here. This association hasmore than 100 radio editors and writersin its membership.

FOLLIES OF 1930

When time rang the curtain on "The Follies of 1929" inthe radio business, some tried to assure themselves that theyhad seen positively the last appearance of slapstick comedyin industrial affairs. Others, with a more abundant faith inthe capacity of the craft to burlesque any situation, have kepttheir seats for "The Follies of 1930" and have not had to waitlong for the prologue. As swiftly as if obeying the demandsof Belasco, Lee Shubert or Ziggy for a Broadway opening,those gifted for supplying tragedy or farce in what is sup-posed to be a business have staged a series of contretempsthat would be amusing if not so vastly expensive within thefirst six weeks of the new year. (Late corners will not beseated until the end of Act One.)

Two or three weeks ago there occurred just such a broad-cast event as radio folk had literally prayed for since Tunneytook the long count. For the first time in United States his-tory the living voice of an English king was heard in Amer-ica; for the first time in the annals of the Anglo-Saxon racea monarch of England could be listened to throughout theBritish Empire. The occasion was, of course, the broadcastof proceedings of the Naval Armament conference in London,an event as sudden and unexpected as it could be with only acouple of years of public preparation for it by the partici-pating governments.

Popular interest in the phenomenon was so immense thatwith scarcely a week's advance notice and by the aid of onlysuch newspaper attention as the news services incidentallygave to it and radio editors could find head -lines for in pagescrowded with manufacturers' press dope concerning the stabi-lization of the industry and tonight's hour for Amos 'n' Andy,it is recorded that several million people arose at unaccus-tomed morning hours to hear the king, hordes of them atfour o'clock, central standard time, and to the westward even

earlier. Yet it is doubtful whether as many as five thousandsets were sold expressly for this occasion, while if the indus-try had prepared its advertising and salesmanship with anyadequacy, there could have been a movement of at least onehundred thousand.

Radio is fond of boasting of its colossal influence in publicaffairs, of the priceless potency of its energy to make audibleexpressions from men who desire for their expressions theextremest audibility. Yet no one anywhere in radio exertedso trifling an influence with the managers of the naval confer-ence as to place the more or less formalistic opening of thatprogram at two or three o'clock of a London afternoon, anhour at which tens of millions of Americans could have heardthe royal address with ease, instead of a few million with in-convenience. Why the broadcast of the world navy parleywas made a secret for scholars and the serious-minded insteadof an attraction for the multitudes, it is not a duty for thisnewspaper to determine, though if it would help to prevent a

recurrence of the error we could do so. As it stands, the inci-dent is as gaudy an opening number for the "Radio Follies"as the balance of the year or industrial indifference to thefundamental possibilities of the business is likely to provide.

After the entrance music must come some sentiment, andfor sentiment in radio read, Science. The tube laboratoriesare bringing forth a juggling act which bids fair to make itas impossible to balance inventories of set merchandise asW. C. Fields' elastic billiard cue made it impossible for himto run pool in Ziegfeld's classic show.

There is a new type of tube in the offing. Merely in theoffing, mind you, but it is being given unlimited consumerpublicity in the radio sections and is actually mentioned inoccasional tube -sponsored broadcasting, though not a singletube of the projected type is in a radio store for sale, nor ifone were sold could any buyer find a set it could be used in. So,at an interval when perils of liquidation, new lines, over -popu-lation of the industry and under -nourishment of consumer -interest in conventional product are driving wide contingentsof the trade into indecision and distrust, the public is beingtold with considerable force and effectiveness-for naturallythe public is more willing to believe than to doubt it-that arevolutionary new type of radio construction is just aroundthe corner and that anyone who buys a set now is an ass.

It is almost unbelievable that such opportunistic acro-batics can be the bed -rock of a genuinely great industry. Itchallenges reason that the welfare of the whole and conse-quently of all of its parts can be repeatedly and systemati-cally threatened for temporary, theoretical, individual com-petitive gain. Yet as long as the principle of cut - and - trysubstitutes for logical practice, as long as there is no unity inessentials or tolerance in non -essentials, as long as the radiobusiness refuses to pattern after other big occupations andyields to the premise that every radio producer or merchant islaw unto himself and that there is as much honest permanencein his objective as there is honor in a racket, the "Follies"will hold the center of the stage and anyone intending to playthe drama legitimately will make as much money helping toshift the scenes, where at all events he will not be out ofwork.

Andrea OptimisticOver Future of Radio

One of the strongest expressions ofconfidence in the future of the radioindustry has just come from Frank A.D. Andrea, president of F. A. D. An-drea, Inc., Long Island City, N. Y.,maker of Fada radio.

Mr. Andrea believes that 1930 will bean excellent year for radio. He main-tains that better broadcasting talentand higher class programs have madethe public appreciate quality radio sets.He confidently looks forward to a busy,active year in which there will be apronounced demand for the higher qual-

ity sets to meet the requirements ofthe discriminating public.

"Directly in line with our 1930 salespolicy, to produce and sell the highestquality radios and to develop even moreaggressively the markets for such sets,we are strengthening our personnelwith several changes and additions,"Mr. Andrea stated.

"JACK" REDELL DIES W. ROY McCANNE, STROMBERG PRESIDENT,

IN CHICAGO AFTER ON TEN -WEEK EUROPEAN HOLIDAY TOUR

A BRIEF ILLNESSChicago, Ill., Saturday.

Members of the local trade weresaddened this week by the untimelydeath of John M. Redell, familiarlyknown as "Jack," and one of the mostpopular sales representatives in thissection. Apparently a well man a weekago, he was suddenly taken ill with ap-pendicitis and following an operationlast Monday, pneumonia developedfrom which his death resulted.

Mr. Redell had been conected in vari-ous capacities with the radio industryfor the last seven or eight years, repre-senting some of the various parts andappliance manufacturers under his ownname until about a year ago when hebecame affiliated with the Lukko Co.,wholesale distributors of the Stude-baker radio, on West Jackson boule-vard. However, that conection wassevered the first of the year and he andhis son, who had been associated withhim, had practically completed arrange-ments for other representation here.

The funeral was held Thursday fromhis home, 2449 Byron street, and alarge delegation of radio men and mem-bers of the Mid -West Radio TradesAssociation, of which he was secretary,attended. Besides his widow, he is sur-vived by his son.

Big Tube Sales Expected

By National Carbon HeadPaul P. Huffard, recently elected

president of the National Carbon Co.,New York, declared last week that hepredicts record sales of radio tubes dur-ing the present year. The NationalCarbon Co. manufactures Eveready-Raytheon tubes.

Mr. Huffard sees in the current yearindications of the sharpest competitionso far in the radio tube manufacturingfield. He said in part:

"The manufacture and sale of tubesis gradually being concentrated in thehands of a few concerns just as thehulk of automobile production has beenconcentrated. The withdrawal of theNational Carbon Co. from the radio setmanufacturing field has left the wayopen for set manufacturers to favorsales of Eveready-Raytheon tubes bytheir distributors.

"The radio tube offers one of thelargest replacement markets open tothe industry and will grow from yearto year."

"Orders booked from our distributorsare sufficient to carry our factorythrough the months of February,March and April with a normal work-ing force.

"Zenith has no overdue obligationsto meet. Our assets, including our bankbalance and accounts receivable are farin excess of all liabilities."

Concentration to Aid

Production of the Arcturus RadioTube Co., this city, in its three plants,two in this city and the other in Harri-son, will increase to a point double thatof the former six plants as a result ofconcentration of the output, GeorgeLewis, vice-president of the company,said today.

"The plan for concentration," Mr.Lewis stated, "was determined uponsome time ago. We carefully analyzedthe manufacturing fields of the countryand chose Newark for the home ofArcturus because of its favorable loca-tion and the splendid supply of skilledlabor upon which to draw. Our experi-ence since selecting Newark has morethan justified our choice and we lookforward to a year of continued pro-gress."

The recent depression in the radio in-dustry appears to have passed andJanuary radio sales showed markedimprovement, according to H. B. Rich-mond, of this city, president of theRadio Manufacturers' Association, inannouncing the meeting of the Associ-ation's board of directors at Clevelandon February 10. The manufacturers'meeting is coincident with the nationalannual convention of the organizationsof radio jobbers and dealers, the Na-tional Federation of Radio Associationsand the Radio Wholesalers' Association.Many important industrial problemswill be considered jointly by these twobranches of the radio industry.

"The radio industry apparently hasturned a corner and is now on theupgrade," said President Richmond.' Sales of all radio products in Janu-ary showed a marked improvementover December and last November.From parts and accessory manufactur-ers, as well as set manufacturers, comegeneral reports of decided improvementin their January business.

"Broadcasting is also at its peak,domestic as well as the new regularinternational broadcast. The heavy-weight pugilistic contest scheduled forthis month is another large sales stim-ulus in prospect.

"There is also a stiffening in pricesof radio products. Several manufac-turers have recently announced in-creases and others are contemplating asimilar policy, and the recent periodof price -cutting is about over. Inven-tories have been well moved and theradio industry is now in a morehealthy condition and faces the futurewits confidence."

In Newark and in the Bronx, twomeetings were held, one in the after-noon, and one in the evening. Accord-ing to Mr. Craddick, the experiment ofhaving local business meetings in eachof the cities was highly successful, for,it was found, many purely local prob-lems of the dealer were brought up,discussed, and a solution decided uponas a result. The discussions generallylasted about five hours, and thirty-fivedealers was the average in attendance.

Mr. Craddick further stated that thesales conferences found Zenith occupy-ing a paramount positioners' estimation and sales, with highoptimism prevailing for the continuedsuccessful selling of Zenith sets.

Kolster Sets Tentatively

Following agreement by fifteen or

more distributors of the Kolster RadioCorp., Newark, N. J., manufacturingconcern lately petitioned into a receiver-ship to pay approximately $500,000 forcompletion of sets in process now inthe factory and tentative approval ofthe offer by the court, a petition for re-hearing of the matter has been enter-tained and next Tuesday, February 11,set as the date for hearing why theoffer should be rejected. It is petition-ed by various shareholders that agreater sum could be realized for themerchandise by other means of sale.

DeForest Hearing IsPostponed for a Day

Vice -Chancellor V. M. Lewis post-poned the application of H. C. Von-korff, of Staten Island, for a receiverfor the De Forest Radio Co. until Wed-nesday at 11 o'clock, in Paterson, N. J.

Attorney Barclay, of Lindbury, De -pew & Faulk objected, stating that De -Forest would suffer irreparable loss ifthere were further delays. Vice -Chan-cellor Lewis stated that although hewas inclined to hear the case on Mon-day, and admitted that the companymight suffer, he doubted that the losswould be "irreparable."

The Crosley Radio Corp., this city,reported net profits of $1,085,823, aftercharges, depreciation and taxes for1929. This is equivalent to $2 a shareon 542,800 no par shares, against $3,-605,973 or $6.93 a share on 520,000

shares in. 1928.The balance sheet shows total assets

of $6,851,938, compared with $8,514,363at the end of 1928. Cash and govern-ment securities were $651,612 against$4,145,322. In the liabilties account,$14,126 is carried as a reserve forprice reduction. No such item was car-ried in 1928. Surplus amounted to $3,-260,769 against $4,464,891 in 1928.

Net sales for the year totaled $15,-525,612, against $17,460,829 in the pre-vious year.

partment, and during the past threeyears he had practically daily associa-tion with Mr. Jacoby, assisting him inmatters of major importance.

Mr. Yanochowski studied electricalengineering at the University of Illi-nois, and upon leaving the universitybecame associated with a telephonemanufacturer. He first worked in thefactory and later took a student'scourse in the plant after which heworked as a telephone switchboard in-staller and maintenance engineer.

After several years of experience inthis field, he entered the patent depart-ment of the company, and there hefamiliarized himself with the legalwork of the telephone business.

In 1915 Mr. Yanochowski becameidentified with the legal department ofthe Kellogg Switchboard & Supply Co.,and then took up the study of law.He was admitted to the Illinois Statebar in 1919.

For the past five years Mr. Yano-chowski has been in direct charge ofthe Kellogg legal and patent depart-ment. This work has brought him inclose touch with the various depart-ments of the business-administrative,productive and engineering. His elec-tion to the presidency was the unani-mous choice of the board of directors.

DEATH TAKES FATHEROF LOUIS GOLDMAN

"The Government owes me moneythis year..I had some beautiful losses."That is the reply facetiously given veryfrequently when a person has beenasked whether he filed his income taxreturn or paid his tax. But the replyis not so facetious. To use a trite butapt expression, it contains more truththan poetry. Under the income taxlaw, one can in all seriousness comepretty .near sending a bill to the gov-ernment when he loses money. Let ussee why and how.

Under the law net losses of one yearcan be used as an offset against theincome of subsequent years. That is agreat relief provision for taxpayers.It enables them to recoup, in part, theeffect of their losses, out of profits offuture years. It gives them a creditbill, so to speak, that can be usedagainst other purchases. Perhaps com-paring it to a raincheck might conveythe thought better.

But it is not all so rosy. Like mostother provisions of the law that lookgood and generous, there are a fewlimitations and exceptions that must benoted.

Business Losses Only.

To begin with, only such net lossesas arise from the operation of a tradeor business may be carried forwardand applied against subsequent income.In other words, a salaried individualwho dabbled in the stock market onthe side and who lost more in 1928than his salary for the year, could notapply his 1928 net loss against 1929profits, because his business as such,was not that of stock market trading.However, a person can have more thanone business, so that if the individualhere supposed entered into stock mar-ket trading with sufficient frequencyand time to constitute it a regular busi-ness of his, the loss would be deducti-ble from future years' profits.

When any particular activity is abusiness, and when it is merely a sideline, is a question of fact, and dependsupon the particular circumstances ofeach case. The point that is here im-portant is that if a net loss does notarise from a business, it may be takenas a deduction in computing income ofsubsequent years. If it does not arisefrom a business, then even though theremay be a net loss, it is of no avail incomputing the next year's tax.

Two Year Limitation.

Here's another limitation. The netloss cannot be carried forward formore than two succeeding years. Forinstance, a net loss in 1928 can be de-ducted from income in 1929. If it ex-

ceeds the income of 1929, the excesscan be applied against the income of1930, but if it exceeds the 1930 income,it cannot be carried forward any fur-ther.

The deductibility of net losses is notnew to the present law. It was alsoin effect under the 1921, 1924 and 1926laws. Net losses of 1927, to the extentthat they exceeded 1928 income, maybe deducted from 1929 income. Netlosses of 1928 may be likewise appliedagainst 1929 income. A taxpayer willnot be doing right by himself, there-fore, if in preparing his 1929 returnshe doesn't first find out what his statuswas in 1927 and 1928 on the net losssituation.

Accounting for Losses.Obviously, accounting for losses is

now just as important as accountingfor profits. Taxpayers are too proneto overlook this point. As a rule, wherelosses are involved, the feeling of de-spondency, or whatever the cause maybe, seems to make individuals becomelax in their method of accounting forlosses. They probably figure that itmakes no difference anyhow. However,as we have just seen, and paradoxicalas it may sound, net losses, if properlysubstantiated, have actually a cashprofit value for income tax purposes.

The exact manner of computing thenet loss is rather complicated and con-fusing. It will serve no particular pur-pose to go into the details here. Suf-fice it to say that it is not merely theexcess of the business deductions overthe business income. Instead, it wouldbe now accurate to describe it gener-ally as the excess of the business de-ductions over all other income, whetherthe income is from the business orother sources, including tax exempt in-come.

Let us now inventory a bit. In thesearticles, we have to date covered allthe important general provisions of theincome tax. We have seen who mustfile returns, what the exemptions are,the tax rates and the method of com-puting the tax, including the specialcomputations for earned income andcapital gains. We have also touchedon the question of net losses. We arenow ready to see how the amount oftaxable income is to be arrived at.

But perhaps the first thing to getout of the way is an understanding ofwhat is net income, and what incomeis exempt from tax. That will be thesubject for the next article and therebyclearly mark the rest of the road.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.Depreciation on Trust Property.

Q. In the administration of a trustfund by a trust, the income of whichis paid to an individual for life, maythe individual take the depreciation oncapital assets as a deduction from in-come?-E. S.

A. The allowable deduction for de-preciation is apportioned between theincome beneficiaries and the trustee inaccordance with the instrument creat-ing the trust, or in the absence of suchprovisions, on the basis of the trustincome allocable to each.

Buffalo, N. Y., Saturday.

The Buffalo talking machine andradio trade has passed through thefirst month of a new year with mostgratifying results. Many dealers hadfelt that because of the somewhat de-pressed industrial situation sales, par-ticularly in the radio field, might showa decided falling off. Time has shown,however, that this fear was groundless.A canvass of leading jobbers here thisweek showed that sales to dealers actu-ally increased from ten to 15 per cent.in January of this year as comparedwith the same month of 1928, whilethe gains made by dealers were asgreat, if not greater, in the districtas a whole.

There is now a very strong feelingthat the early part of this year is go-ing to be a good period particularlyfor radio and that well planned mer-chandising will bring results compar-able with those which have been ob-tained in January as noted.

The formation of the Majestic Whole-salers, Inc., for the exclusive distribu-tion of Majestic receivers and Majestictubes, has been announced by RobertD. Glennie, president of the FallsEquipment Co. of Buffalo. This neworganization has plans under way toopen branches in Erie and NiagaraFalls.

The officers of the new concern areR. D. Glennie, president; Clarence A.Tyron, vice-president; M. H. Anthony,secretary, and F. N. Coe, treasurer.The general manager is Glenn E. Bur-dick, who has been identified with thewholesaling of Majestic products.

The new firm held open house lastweek at the Lafayette hotel for thepurpose of exhibiting the six modelsin the Majestic line.

Thorne's Electric Co., Buffalo dealerin radio, has filed a petition in bank-ruptcy.

Charles F. Bricka, formerly of thefirm of Brica & Enos, radio dealers,who died recently leaves an estatevalued at $394,034.76.

Announcement was made to radiodealers of London, Ont., and vicinityat a district convention, that the Rogersbatteryless radio and the Majestic elec-tric radio, heretofore manufactured andmarketed in Canada as two separateproducts would be sold under the nameof Rogers -Majestic. This arrangementwas recently completed by the Rogers -Majestic Corp., Ltd., of Toronto, andthe Grigsby-Grunow Co., of Chicago,manufacturers of the Majestic radio inthe United States.

The merchants were guests at adinner and meeting at the Hotel Lon-don in connection with the Rogers -Majestic Trans -Canada Caravan, whichis covering the entire Dominion ofCanada.

A public exhibition of new modelsof the Majestic radio was displayed inthe Hotel London, attracting a greatmany admirers.

The three Zenith plans are produc-ing 800 to a 1,000 sets a day, whichis not sufficient to take care of theorders being received, it was said. Astep-up in production is expected thefirst of February.

Pudney Brothers, dealers of pianosand several different models of radios,London, Ont., have purchased the pro-perty formerly occupied by the LondonSilverware Plating & Repairing Co., at340 Dundas street. The new locationoffers larger quarters for business.

Radio dealers of Watertown, N. Y.,and vicinity have taken action againstso-called "joy-riders" or persons whohave been enjoying radio sets in theirhomes for long periods without cost.It has developed that many personshave gone to radio dealers, ordered amachine on trial, used it for severalweeks, then declaring it unsatisfactory,practiced the same trick on anotherdealer. Hereafter a committee of thedealers association will report thenames of "joy-riders" and they willnot be permitted to get machines unlessdown payments are made. The dealersnumbering 22, plan to hold weeklymeetings hereafter.

With several hundred dealers fromall over this territory in attendance,the new Majestic radio made its bowrecently to the men who will retail itto the public.

At the meting in the banquet roomof the Multnomah hotel, Abner R. Will-son, general manager of the MajesticDistributing Co., and Don II. Slocum,branch manager in charge of the Port-land division, introduced the new set tothe dealers.

Speakers at the meeting were Will-son, Slocum, William J. Walsh, Wil-liam O. McKay, president of the con-cern; G. P. Ellis, Pacific coast mana-ger for Grigsby-Grunow Co.; WardRobinson, territory representative, andB. N. Hutchinson, advertising director.Fifteen carloads of new sets are en -route to the Majestic Distributing Co.for distribution over the Northwestterritory.

Mr. Ellis also confirmed the reportthat the Grigsby-Grunow Co., manu-facturers of the Majestic, is to pro-duce a refrigerator. The refrigeratorplant is practically completed and willbe in production before Spring. TheMajestic refrigerator will be the lastword in simplicity, according to Ellis,and will be manufactured in such amanner that its only installation willconsist in plugging a cord into an elec-tric light socket.

Sherman, Clay & Co., home of theSteinway piano, and headquarters ofthe following makes of radios, Victor,Atwater Kent, Brunswick, Bosch, Ma-jestic, Radiola, Sparton and Stromberg-Carlson, moved during the latter partof January from Sixth and Morrison.where it has been located for manyyears, to its new quarters in the Wood-lark building at West Park and Adlerstreets.

"We will have one of the most mod-ern and convenient music stores on thePacific coast," said Frank L. Youse,manager of the Portland branch. "Wewill occupy three floors of the building.We have spent more than $50,000 todate to make them as attractive andaccessible as possible."

The company will have more sellingspace in the new location than wasavailable at the old, as service facili-ties will be located outside the store,at Fifteenth and Kearney, instead ofwithin the store as formerly. A ten-year lease is held on the new location.Negotiations for this lease were com-pleted several months ago, since whichtime the alterations and improvementshave been made to meet the needs ofthis popular music house.

One of the most unusual uses forradio ever tried in Portland was madein the play, "Mary, Mary, Quite Con-trary," which was produced by thePortland Civic Players, featuring Mrs.Sanford Lowergart in the leading role.The set, an Atwater Kent, model 66,took the place of a whole orchestra andplayed the prelude and the intermissionnumbers, the music being picked upfrom a local radio station. The noveltywas introduced by R. E. DeMent, man-ager of Cohn Bros. radio department,with the assistance of Walter Alfonso,of the Sunset Electric Co., AtwaterKent distributors.

The creditors of the American PianoCo. last week adopted a resolution toauthorize the Irving Trust Co., NewYork, receiver in equity for the com-pany, to continue business on a skele-ton basis for at least thirty days andfor such further period as may berecommended by the creditors' commit-tee. Charles Gilbert Named

Pilot Vice -PresidentCharles Gilbert, well-known radio ex-

ecutive, has become affiliated with thePilot Radio & Tube Corp., of Brooklyn,N. Y., in the capacity of vice-presidentin charge of merchandising.

Mr. Gilbert is one of the real pio-neers, his connection with the art dat-ing back to the early days of the De -Forest Radio Telephone & TelegraphCo. He was treasurer of that com-pany from 1915 to 1921, and presidentand general manager from 1921 to1924. With the sale of the controllinginterest of the DeForest company in1924 to a Detroit syndicate, he becamesecretary of the Brandes Division ofthe Kolster Radio Corp., in charge ofthe purchasing and material controldivision, and held that position untila short time ago.

Upon assuming his new post, Mr.Gilbert announced the establishment ofbranch offices and warehouses in Chi-cago, Detroit and San Francisco. Thesebranches are in charge of Nathan Che-rof, Warren E. Brennan and ArnoldSinai, respectively.

More than 1,000 Majestic radio deal-ers in the tri-state district were guestsof Hamburg Brothers, 863 Liberty ave-nue, exclusive wholesale distributors ofMajestic radio, at the second annualstyle show held in the William PennHotel.

The show marked the tenth anni-versary of Hamburg Brothers, whichhas grown to be one of the leadingdistributors in the country. A dealers'meeting in which the 1930 program wasoutlined, and a banquet followed.

The outlook for the radio industrythis year is very favorable, E. A. Ham-burg, president of Hamburg Brothers,said. "There have been no radicalchanges this year in radio, but the in-dustry has become more stabilizedwith the elimination of a number ofmanufacturers. In general the indus-try looks very promising this year,especially for the last half of the year."

William Boate, recently appointedsales manager for Hamburg Brothers,completed arrarigements for the pro-gram.

The first meeting of the new year ofthe Blair County Radio Dealers' Asso-ciation was held at the Penn AltoHotel, Altoona, Pa., with a good sizedturnout. Herbert Wolf presided. Theofficers were all re-elected for the en-suing year. It was stated by some ofthe members that the year just endedwas a very satisfactory one from asales standpoint.

J. H. Troup, head of the J. H. TroupMusic House, of Harrisburg, is a patientin the Harrisburg Hospital due to adislocated hip which he sustained whenhe fell on a slippery pavement a fewdays ago. Mr. Troup is vice-presidentof the Mechanics Trust Company. TheTroup Music House is one of the lead-ing dealers in Central Pennsylvania.

The Motor Parts Co., newly appoint-ed Philco radio distributors in CentralPennsylvania, was host to the dealersin the territory at the Colonial Coun-try Club, near Harrisburg. William H.Ernest, member of the PennsylvaniaState Senate, spoke on "Radio and itsInfluence on the World. R. E. Mat-thews, sales manager of the Philco dis-tributors, was toastmaster at the din-ner. Speakers included Peter Kane,divisional sales manager of Philco;Harry B. Brown, advertising managerfor Philco, who outlined the publicityprogram for the coming year, and J. C.Marden, advertising manager of theMotor Parts Co., who spoke on plansof the distributors. L. R. Lally, Har-risburg branch manager, extended awelcome to the dealers and assuredmost hearty and full co-operation tothe Philco retailers in central Pennsyl-vania. James Parsons, Philco factoryengineer, gave a demonstration of thenew Philco model. Virtually everyPhilco dealer was of the opinion thatbusiness conditions were bound to bemuch better in 1930 than in the preced-ing year.

The Geiger Electric Co. of Read-ing, Pa., was granted a Pennsylvaniacharter with a capital of $5,000, to en-gage in the sale of radio sets. The placeof business is on Schuylkill avenue.

Majestic radio dealers to the number

of 125 assembled in the West VirginiaHotel at Bluefield, W. Va., when thefeatures of the 1930 Majestic line wereexplained. The meeting was held underthe auspices of the Air -Ola Radio Co.,distributors for Majestic in southernWest Virginia and Virginia. G. E. Mid-dleton presided at the dinner that fol-lowed the display and demonstration.C. V. Chevrout, president of the Air -Ola company, was the principal speak-er. Others who spoke briefly were G.E. Middleton, territory supervisor; J.S. Kitchen, F. R. Lyons and F. H. Root.

Radio Equip. Co. of Tex.Dallas, Tex., Friday.

The Radio Equipment Co. of Texas,distributor for Majestic all -electricradio, conducted its second Majesticconvention at the Baker hotel here re-cently with nearly 350 dealers from allparts of the State in attendance. Somedealers traveled 800 miles in order tobe present at the meeting. The spa-cious Crystal Ballroom of the Bakerhotel was elaborately decorated for theaffair and the current Majestic radiomodels were attractively displayed.

The morning session of the conven-tion was opened by Chas. K. Cohn,vice-president and director of sales ofthe Radio Equipment Co. of Texas,who stressed the opportunities for pros-perity for 1930 in radio, stating thatin his opinion 1930 would prove thebiggest year radio dealers of Texashave ever experienced.

B. G. Powell, advertising and salespromotion manager of the local firm,was the second speaker, his subjectbeing the "Greatest Returns Per Dol-lar Invested." Mr. Powell was follow-ed by F. W. Terrell, field representativeof the General Outdoor Advertising Co.The convention then adjourned to Pea-cock Terrace where luncheon wasserved, re -assembling in the CrystalBallroom for the afternoon session.

The Majestic dealers then heard C.B. Corbin, southwest district sales man-ager for Grigsby-Grunow Co., Chicago,maker of Majestic radio, who spoke onthe Majestic College of the Air. Mr.Corbin was followed by Linwood Grif-fin, secretary -treasurer of the RadioEquipment Co. of Texas, who spoke onmodern financing plans. W. L. Cohn,president of the Radio Equipment Co.of Texas, then graphically recountedMajestic activities for 1929, explainedthe policies for 1930, and presented thenew Majestic "prosperity models."

The evening session was devoted toa banquet, entertainment and dance inthe Crystal ballroom, with more than350 Majestic dealers, their wives andfriends in attendance.

The Beck & Combitt Co. has beenappointed distributor of Brunswickradio, radio - phonograph combinationsand records in the St. Louis territory.It brings a change in the distributionpolicy of the Brunswick-Balke-Collen-der Co., which hitherto has distributedradios and phonographs from its branchin St. Louis.

Three men from the Brunswick or-ganization have joined the Beck & Cor-bitt Co. sales force. They are John A.Bohan and Edward Walsh, who willcover the city, and L. W. Miller, whowill act as representative in the coun-try.

The Brunswick radio and combina-tion models have consistently been ingood demand in this territory and withthe recent introduction of the new com-bination model dealers have enjoyed anappreciable increase in sales. In intro-ducing this model a program by promi-nent artists was broadcast from a New

York radio station. This program waspicked up by a Brunswick set and thereproduction from the radio was re-corded. A disc was made in the studioof the broadcast. In introducing thenew combination model dealers usedthese two recordings to demonstrate thelife -like reproduction of Brunswickradios and phonographs. This demon-stration was successful not only in St.Louis and this territory but through-out the entire country.

The Universal Cabinet Co., local dis-tributor, has organized a new divisionwhich will be known as the Radio Ser-vice Laboratories and has secured theservices of G. L. Simpson, field engi-neer formerly with the Temple Cor-poration. Mr. Simpson attended theUniversity of Oxford, graduating witha bachelor of science degree. He wasalso formerly with Marconi, Ltd.; West-ern Electric, Inc.; Bell Telephone La-boratories, and Movieton Division ofElectric Research Products, Inc.

A barometer of the radio industryin the St. Louis territory at the presenttime which seems to indicate the possi-ble sales in the near future was theplacing of orders by dealers here, total-ing more than $100,000 for Majesticsets.

Five hundred dealers were on handrecently to witness the debut of thesix new Majesties. An enthusiastic au-dience filled one of the large diningrooms when Duane Wanamaker, direc-tor of advertising of Grigsby-GrunowCo., opened the meeting and told of themanufacturing schedule just completedand the plans of the company in thefuture in tube and set production. J. C.Stolz, director of publicity; H. M. Paul-ey, service engineer, and J. E. Monder,district sales manager of the companyalso spoke. Harold Wrape, president ofthe Benwood-Linze Co., and B. S. Tuck-er, sales manager, also addressed thedealers. An elaborate banquet and en-tertainment was given at the ChaseHotel in the evening which was attendedby all who were present at the salesconference. According to Harold Wrape,increased sales activity was noticeablethroughout the session and the $100,-000 orders booked during the afternoonwas a forerunner of an excellent springbusiness.

distributors of Philco Radio in theBronx, Westchester, Queens, Nassauand Suffolk Counties, 536 Bergen ave-nue, New York, in a campaign to moreintensively aid its dealers, has just in-stituted a sales promotion departmentwhich will be directed by J. B. Chaff e,it is announced by A. S. Simons, oneof the heads of the Universal company.

Mr. Chaffe who has had extensiveexperience in the field of sales promo-tion will closely cooperate with thedealers in the counties covered by theUniversal organization and in this con-nection will also direct several crews ofhouse -to -house salesmen who will combthe territory for Philco radio prospects.

Mr. Simons declared he was pleasedwith January activity on the Philcoline and the stimulus given this prod-uct by the introduction of the newmodels. He is highly optimistic overthe outlook for Philco radio for thebalance of the winter and spring sea-sons.

Two well-known Illinois radio dis-tributing organizations will merge asof February 1, it was reported heretoday. The consolidated organizationwill distribute Philco radio, made bythe Philadelphia Storage Battery Co.,exclusively.

The merge firms are the Conron Dis-tributing Corp., this city, and the Wil-liams Hardware Co. radio division, ofStreator. The name of the consolidatedcompany is the Conron-Williams Corp.

The Conron Distributing Corp. wasorganized in 1928 to distribute Philcoradio, while the Williams HardwareCo. radio division was organized in1922 and formerly distributed Crosleyand Amrad lines.

T. W. Conron is president of thenew corporation, and N. B. Williams,vice-president in charge of sales.

Going to New York from Quebec,Captain Sparks renewed friendshipamong the hundreds of automotive ex-ecutives and accessory jobbers withwhom he has been intimate during histhirty years in the manufacture ofautomotive equipment.

IN SAN DIEGO MARKETTRADE IS MORE OPTIMISTIC

Good Number of Cash Sales Indi-cate Healthy Condition-Janu-ary Meeting of Trade Body IsPostponed.

San Diego, Calif., Thursday.

The public has been coming into themarket again since the middle of Janu-ary and numerous dealers report them-selves well pleased with the volume ofbusiness, and even better satisfied withthe improved attitude of buyers show-ing a willingness to deal on a reason-able basis.

Leaders in the trade have made ad-vances in tightening up along the lineswhere weakness ran toward extremesduring the final three months of lastyear. Progress is noted in salesmanshiptending to definitely qualify inquirersas having a real intention to buypromptly before sending out a set fordemonstration. Contrary to the expyec-tations of some dealers, a firm policytending to eliminate "joy riding" gen-erally is not only accepted without ques-tion by intending buyers, but frequentlycalls forth favorable comment. Busi-ness people seem to have reached theconclusion that the retail business inradio was getting over extended on freeservice, and when this is frankly ad-mitted they are ready to cooperate per-sonally toward getting the local tradeon a better foundation.

The undercurrent of feeling that bigreductions would be announced earlyin the year is passing, and intendingbuyers who were hesitating at the holi-day season for this reason are nowbuying.

The number of cash deals reportedby several leading stores indicates thatconfidence in general business outlookis building up more rapidly than wasexpected here as recently as the firsttwo weeks in January.

The January meeting of Radio TradesAssociation of San Diego County whichwas to be held January 21 was post-poned out of courtesy to a number ofactive members unable to attend on ac-count of illness. When the meeting isheld the matter of more strict enforce-ment of a deposit or down paymentbefore sending out a set for demonstra-tion will come up for discussion.

Glann H. Dutton, 3885 Van Dycke, isreported making a good recovery froman operation. The store has been undermanagement of Mrs. Dutton, who isno novice at the business, as she hasbeen in the habit of assisting at theoffice, so Mr. Dutton does not have toworry about the store while he is con-valescing.

Warner "Bud" Wendell suffered apainful fracture of the ankle while par-ticipating in winter sports made pos-sible by the heavy snowfall in the moun-tains, on January 19. Although thebreak came in a bad place, recoverydue to skillful surgical treatment anda rugged constitution will enable Mr.Wendel to get back on the job in afew more days. He is manager of theradio department at Benbough Furni-ture,"Fourth and B streets, very promi-nent in the local list of high graderadio retailers.

Display of a multiple line stock hasbeen worked out to a fine point of

efficiency at the exclusive radio storeof Jas. Urquhart, 631 B street. Ar-rangement shows the goods and createsa buying atmosphere, and assists thesalesman to carry the prospect rapidlyforward to a definite selection. JamesUrquhart and his brother, Norman, whomanage this store, living up to its slo-gan "Dependable radios," were promi-nent in the business life of the city be-fore going into radio upwards of sixyears ago, and founded the businesswith a fine personal following to as-sure success. But in the main it is .-apparent that their growth has comethrough activity and a sincere purposeand determination to make service theway to progress. In fact they tell everycustomer they sell they expect him tobring them in three more, and on aver-ages they actually get two.

James and Norman Urquhart restricttheir radio operations to three makes,RCA Radiola, Edison and Philco. Theyeducate the public ta deal with themon the strength of their really knowingradio, and how to service it. As a prac-tical matter it is difficult for a techni-cian to keep in his mind the detailswhich he must know, and learn all thenew things, if he has too many differentmakes to take care of.

This store observes that RCA mer-chandise is a steady runner, a year-round seller in the complete line, everyyear. It has a following in the public,and does not fluctuate.

Edison radio gives its dealers in thislocality fine backing, through H. R.Curtis Co., of Los Angeles, distributors.Manager Claude Foote has become verypopular through demonstrating prompt-ness and square dealing in trade rela-tions.

M. C. Dearborn, proprietor, DearbornRadio Co., 1025 University avenue, andpresident of the county radio dealers'association, gives a favorable report onhis individual experience since the firstof the year, eliminating free antennainstallations for demonstrations. InSan Diego, as elsewhere, it was be-lieved by many that competitive condi-tions forced all dealers to continue thiswasteful practice. Mr. Dearborn findshe is getting just as many sales, possi-bly more, by collecting $5 in advance.It is only the joy rider who walks outwith a flimsy excuse when the news issprung. In doing this he saves a dealertime which can be used profitably. Onthe other hand it is only human naturefor a prospect to buy of a dealer towhom he has already made a payment.Having the courage to get $5 for theantenna is a big step toward clinch-ing a deal promptly.

"The new Sparton model 589, whichwe opened business on January 25, is awonderful machine, and its price, withcomplete equipment, enables us to getthe business of workingmen having fairto moderate regular wages," is theenthusiastic comment of C. P. Nessel-road. Mr. Nesselroad and A. W. Rey-nolds have a striving four year oldbusiness in Sparton and Atwater Kent,the Reynolds Radio Co., 3636 Univer-sity avenue.

radio activity here during January.Most dealers are having some business;and there are some who have had un-usual success. In the latter case, ofcourse, it is a matter of special salesdrives. But the fact that a specialdrive gets special response is taken asan indication that better steady tradeahead may be presumed.

Eight pages in the San FranciscoCall -Bulletin, the largest evening paperin San Francisco, were taken to tellthe Majestic story again to the peopleof this part of California. It was agreat opening gesture for Thompson &Holmes, Ltd., the new distributors fornorthern California.

The award in the sales contest of theMajestic, announced by W. J. Otto May, president of the CaliforniaVictor Sales, Inc., is now in the Eastattending a sales conference at Chi-cago, and may go on to Camden. Rob-ert Bird, sales manager for the Victor,is visiting the trade in the San JoaquinValley. The Victor dealers are quitepleased with the stabilization policy ofthe company. William Lancaster, as-sistant sales manager, reports thatthey continue to have a very fine saleof Red Seal records and of record sets.

their dealers are doing quite a job withthe sets they already have, and someare succeeding nicely with special sales.

William Quarg calls attention to thefact that there is some very unprofit-able price -cutting taking place by someof the smaller dealers who are evident-ly trying to get from under, and thatsome to whom the radio is but a side-line are using it much as other storesuse cigarettes, to attract customers forthe benefit of other merchandise, re-gardless of any profit. Such activitynot only damages the trade of the legi-timate merchandisers, but tends to in-jure the standing of the entire trade.Mr. Quarg, speaking of his article ap-pearing in the TALKING MACHINEand RADIO WEEKLY last month,states that it has brought him numer-ous responses. It has challenged theattention of sheet music producers, andsome of them are immediately modify-ing their merchandising plans in a waythat promises to restore to some extentat least the interest of the trade in try-ing to merchandise sheet music. TheQuarg store, with its wonderful Span-ish village, still challenges the city asa beautiful and unique radio emporium.

Fred Lindquist, after a couple ofmonths at the City of Paris, feels quiteoptimistic. He came to his present posi-tion with considerable sales and man-aging experience, having last been withSherman, Clay & Co., in charge ofthree of the branches in and aboutTacoma. The manager of the depart-ment, C. Lundburg, had been in thehospital, and the department neededsome pepping up. Mr. Lindquist be-lieves in advertising to do business sothey are letting it be known they havea department, with eighteen billboardsspread over the city, and through otherchannels. A little set that is drawingthem much attention is the Radiette,made by the Keller -Fuller Mfg. Co., inLos Angeles. Attractive, compact, withsix tubes, and built-in speaker at $59.-50, it serves as an attraction for manywho feel that they want a small or acheap set at the present time. Thesevarious appeals are starting the newyear off with a very promising increaseof trade.

C. Lundburg, until recently managerof the radio department of the City ofParis, is back again assisting in thedepartment. When he went to the hos-pital, there seemed little hope of hisrecovery, but since returning he hasbeen looking and feeling better thanever.

The Nathan Dohrman radio depart-ment has succeeded in putting over avery lively January sale. Making asales number of the Beverly receivingset, they did a liberal job of adver-tising, and succeeded in turning 175sets while the sale was on. While thetwo weeks is past, they still have manycalls daily by people who have seen theset. In the shortage of merchandisefor the immediate present these, ofcourse, make good prospects for othersets, or for the future.

While the weeding out process ofthose in the trade who are unable forvarious reasons to carry on is still pro-ceeding, there is a distinct feeling ofoptimism prevailing among the rest ofthe jobbers and dealers throughoutnorthern Ohio. This was brought outat the meeting of the Ohio RadioTrades Association, recently. Severalspeakers declared most emphaticallythat 1930 gave every evidence of beinga good business year. It is noticeablealready that the dealers and jobbersintend concentrating on one or twolines. A number have already ex-pressed their intention of selling oneline exclusively. The new models thatare now arriving are moving betterthan expected and instead of worry-ing over what has occurred, the tradeis getting down to the business of sell-ing and is making good at it.

Ray H. Bechtol was elected presi-dent of the Ohio Radio Dealers' Asso-ciation at the annual meeting at HotelStatler. Other officers elected were:Vice-presidents: Lambert Friedl, RadioWholesalers, Inc.; Howard Shartle,Cleveland Talking Machine Co.; HenryBerger, of the Berger DepartmentStores. Eldon D. As president of theCleveland Distributing Co., AtwaterKent wholesalers, he is known not onlyto the trade of northern Ohio but na-tionally as well. In his speech of ac-ceptance he pointed out that the asso-ciation had plenty of work ahead andthat it was obsolutely essential that thedealers as well as the jobbers give theirwholehearted support. He predictedthat 1930 would prove a good businessyear and pledged his best efforts inbehalf of the organization.

The meeting ,which was held in theballroom of Hotel Statler, was precededby dinner and entertainment. HowardShartle was chairman and gave asplendid address at the opening of thebusiness session. He laid that theassociation had only been in existencesince May 15, 1929, and that it hadaccomplished a number of things forthe good of the trade. These he thenenumerated and which included: thecode of ethics for retail selling andadvertising standards. A delegation ofmembers that filled eight cars went tothe convention at Chicago and securedfor Cleveland the convention of theFederated Trades' Association whichtakes place February 10 and 11 andwhich will give the local trade muchfavorable publicity.

He went on to say that many dealershave been complaining about the re-fusal of the finance companies to han-dle their paper. This was due, he said,to the dealers' method of doing busi-ness. Many made no carrying charge,no installation charge and a smallerdown -payment than good business pro-cedure warranted. As a result, thefinance companies felt that the hand-ling of paper on such sales was not agood investment and declined it. Heurged that the dealers follow the sug-gestions of adequate down -payments,carrying charges, etc., that had beenrecommended previously.

Speaking of the slump in business,he pointed out that the trade shouldfeel grateful for the amount of busi-ness they were getting as compared toother lines of trade. In closing heurged dealers to carry less lines andto carefully scrutinize the standing andfinancial strength of both manufac-turer and distributor before signingup.

Lambert Fried], president of RadioWholesalers, Inc., also spoke briefly andpredicted a good business year. He saidthat the business of those who hadpassed and were passing out of thepicture would be inherited by thoseremaining and that his own businesshad already shown an increase overthat of the past month.

Dale Brown, manager of the Cleve-land Better Business Bureau, also gave

an inspiring address on business ehtics.An involuntary petition in bank-

ruptcy has been filed in United StatesDistrict Court against Martha Schoch,of 246 E. Main street, Alliance, O., bythe Starr Piano Co., The B. W. Smitho. and the Kolster-Brandes Sales Co.,all of Cleveland. The total amountowed the petitioners is given as $10,-242.60. Defendant operated under thename of Schoch Studio.

The local Bosch distributor, RadioWholesalers, Inc., expect their firstshipment of the new Bosch sets forautomobiles early in February. Theyhave already had a large number ofinquiries for them and also have bookedquite a number of orders.

Leo Feist, Inc., has filed suit in Fed-eral court against the Honolulu Con-servatory of Music of Cleveland andother cities for infringement of copy-right on "Rio Rita" and "Honey."Damages and restraining order isasked.

The Republic Radio Corp., this city,was host to the Zenith dealers of GrandRapids and western Michigan at a ban-quet and dealer clinic held at the HotelRowe, here, this week.

Despite the heavy downfall of snow,dealers from the most remote cornersof the territory were in attendance,with support and enthusiasm that fore-casts a season of properity and pro-gress for the new Zenith "sixty" mod-els, officials here believe.

Among the speakers were Dr. FrankA. Rafferty, an official of the ZenithRadio Corp.; C. C. Christiancy, mana-ger of the Republic Radio Corp., ofGrand Rapids, and C. H. W. Merrill,branch sales manager of the RepublicRadio Corp.

After expressing confidence in thestability of business in general, Dr.Rafferty gave facts and figures con-firming the financial stability and pro-gress of the Zenith Radio Corp. "Un-disputable proof that confidence in Zen-ith-its policies, its products-is notmisplaced confidence, but a confidenceborn of the soundest of business, ethi-cal and economic principles is evidencedby the fact that dealers everywhere areflocking to Zenith," he declared.

With sales Meetings over and thedealers back in their stores after hav-ing seen the new models, business hasresumed a normal aspect. At note ofcheerfulness is in the air, the wholeindustry here being pervaded with theview that the early months of 1930promise a reasonably good business.

Among Chicago manufacturers whoare going ahead with production plansis the United Air Cleaner Corp., manu-facturers of Sentinel sets. While anassembling plant has been maintainedfor some time on Seventy-sixth street,it is now planned to do all the workunder one roof-at the Cottage Groveavenue plant-and to that end the re-search laboratory has been enlargedand re -equipped with up-to-the-minuteapparatus for making the finest andclosest tests to insure perfection in thesets turned out. The United companyhas now laid plans to go after this dis-trict's business with all possible effort.

The Gulbransen Co. reports that itsradio business done during the lastyear, which was its first in radio, show-ed a very satisfactory profit, and planshave been laid to make 1930 a veryactive one with the company in placingits sets on the market. H. S. Alexander,advertising manager, is well pleased atthe showing made and is going aheadwith plans for placing Gulbransen radioin the forefront this year. H. R. Har-ris, assistant sales manager, left Tues-day for Cincinnati, where he visitedGulbransen jobbers and outlined salesplans for 1930.

Reports received here by the localoffice of the Zenith Radio Corp. frontCommander Eugene F. McDonald, Jr.,its president, who is now cruising theSouth Seas in his yacht "Mizpah," areto the effect that he will bring back alarge number of new specimens of seaanimals and birds for the Shedd Aqua-rium and the Lincoln Park zoo. Inci-dentally, advices received told of Com-mander McDonald's discovery of a Ger-man doctor and his wife marooned forfive months on Charles Island in theGalapagos group and that the expedi-tion left the doctor and his wife a year'sprovisions. Mr. McDonald and his partyare expected to return to Chicago with-in the next month of so.

The Kimberly Radio Corp., Zenithdistributors here, is "out and afterthem," according to President L. J.Johnson, who says that the "60" modelsare going over nicely with the trade.The sales force has been increased.

Mr. Farny analyzed the problems ofretail merchants and explained the psy-chology of selling. He declared that alarge volume of sales does not alwaysbring high profits.

The importance of private engineer-ing research in keeping abreast withthe progress of the radio industry wasstressed by Mr. Naylor. He also toldof some of his company's activities inthis line.

The new line of Philco 1930 balancedunit sets was exhibited and explainedto the dealers. Speakers included E. VA II the acceptance by the Cincin-nati Radio Wholesalers' Association ofthe offer to merge with the Radio Divi-sion, Cincinnati Electric Club, and seri-ous consideration to the proposal beinggiven by the Radio Merchants' Guild.the prospects are bright for makingCincinnati one of the outstanding citiesin the country with regard to coopera-tion between the various interests inradio. Sponsored by the Union Gas& Electric Co., the Electric Club hasavailable to the members of its variousdivisions a clerical force and industrialresearch department so efficient thata single organization would find diffi-cult to equal.

It is the intention of the Radio Divi-sion of the Electric Club to develop astrong distributor and strong dealerorganization in the Cincinnati field, withthe two groups meeting on commonground at intervals for the purpose ofsolving mutual problems which mayarise. The terms of consolidation pro-vide that each branch, the retail andwholesale, maintains the individualidentity now held, together with itsofficers and governing body. The affilia-tion with the Electric Club, it is be-lieved, would make the separate organi-zations more powerful, locally andwould provide means for a betterknowledge of radio conditions through-out the country, as this information isgathered by the Electric club office per-sonnel.

Faced with the probability of dis-solving as a corporation, in order toenter the proposed merger, the RadioMerchants' Guild has not reached a de-cision on the matter. It is the desireof all concerned to overcome this barrierin order that the combined forces maystart operation at once. Whether someother means of affiliation may be work-ed out, or whether the Guild, while re-taining its identity, will relinquish itsarticles of corporation, probably willbe decided within the next week.

Urging an optimistic attitude on thepart of radio distributors and dealersthroughout the country. The impression secured from a re-view of the radio industry in KansasCity is one of uncertainty. Businessitself is generally quiet but speculationas to the rapidly changing conditionswhich face the industry in general isnot. It is the opinion that the industrywill show a very different face to theworld at this time next year.

The weather, which only recently roseto zero and above, has had a slowing -up effect on radio turnover. Few shop-pers have been out and only the mosthardy have made purchases. This con-dition, however, no longer exists, andwith February, retailers should beginto show a nice increase in sales.

The Kimball company, retailing Ma-jestic, Philco and the new Kimballradio, has experienced a rather quietJanuary, although it has comparedfavorably with the same period lastyear.

The largest sale on records for theyear so far for Paul's has been on thehits from "Sunny Side Up," accordingto Mrs. Mary McMurray. The twonumbers, "I'm a Dreamer" and "If IHad a Talking Picture of You," aredoing excellently. Paul Whiteman'sdance arrangement on the Columbia,and Johnny Marvin's Victor recordingsare both moving well.

The "Love Parade" numbers are sell-ing quite well, stimulated by the factthat the show now is playing here. Al-ready there is a demand for the re-leases of the song hits from the show"Sally" which will open here withinthe week. Mrs. McMurray expects thenumbers from this show to go oververy well.

Brunswick's recent release, "The Wo-man in the Shoe," which is similar inmusic to "The Painted Doll," Mrs. Mc-Murray expects to be as popular as thelast named. Each instrument is soloedin the number which is played by JessStafford's orchestra.

The minor chords of "Crying for theCarolines," Ruth Etting and Guy Lom-bardo renditions, contain a lot of possi-bilities for the next few months, ac-cording to Mrs. McMurray.

One quite good dance record is Bruns-wick's "My Little Honey and Me." ThePaul shop is unable to keep the recordin stock, so great is the demand. Thenumber is played by the Irving Mill'sorchestra.

Johnny Johnson's first release forsome time, "That's Why I Am Jealousof You" and "Kiss Me My Sweetheart,"the last number of which is written byPhil Baxter of Kansas City, are sellingnicely. According to T. H. Condon, of theBrunswick branch here, the radio busi-ness during January, while quiet, hasbeen satisfactory. The record businesscompares favorably with last year, ac-cording to H. H. Dickson.

The biggest week the Fada branchhere has had during the past sixmonths was the week ending January25, according to W. E. Woods, mana-ger. This record was in number ofsets moved. Business following andpreviously has been highly satisfactory.Six $700 combinations were sold dur-ing that one week alone, Mr. Woodsreported. Long distance and telegraphorders remind Mr. Woods of four yearsago, when the radio business was the"cream" industry. Two new dealerswere signed recently in Kansas City,making 14 in all, with about 100 in theterritory.

Sterling Radio Co., headed by H. C.Bonfig, vice-president and general man-ager; C. M. Willis, sales manager; J.M. Scales, manager of the service de-partment; and H. E. Dreier, treasurerand promotion manager, just completedthe most successful series of dealermeetings in the history of the company.These were held in St. Joseph, Mo.,Wichita, Dodge City, Kan., Manhattan,Kansas City and Joplin. Hays McFar-land, head of McFarland AdvertisingAgency, was the principal speaker atthe Kansas City meeting. In spite ofthe sub -zero weather-it was as lowas 20 degrees below at some points-the attendance in every instance waspractically 100 per cent. In Wichitatwo of the men drove in with frozenfingers. The series was held so thatdealers would not have to come to Kan-sas City in the severe weather. Thefull line of Majesties, 6 models, weredescribed, interest being centered in thenew chassis and power pack one unitfeature.

The company is working with deal-ers on the "American School of theAir" movement which starts February4, according to H. C. Dreier.

Bill and Herb, Philco's Lowboyand Highboy were the principal enter-tainers at the show. They broadcastfrom the front windows of the show-rooms in which they had set up theirown studio. Radio and talking machine stores re-port good activity for the entire week.The record and phonograph business,however, suffered slightly from the coldweather. Wholesalers are planning bigactivities as soon as the weather con-ditions and minor floods subside in thelocal area. These do not appear tobe serious but cover to a slight deptha good many acres in the lower alluvialsections. The snows and other factorspredicate a good year for the farmers.Some lines of trade were helped by thecold weather, the coal trade especially,which had been rather dull of late.

Melody Music Shop, 13 S. Main, ofwhich Saul Bluestein is manager andBen Bluestein, assistant, reports briskmid -winter business. Victor machinesand Columbia, Brunswick, Victor andOkeh records are carried. Stringed in-struments are displayed on tables. Thebooths and wall cases are elaboratewith potted plants and suitable deco-rations.

Vesey Piano Co., 102 S. Main, showthe Kimball lines of phonographs andpianos. They have several concertrooms on the main floor and balcony.Mr. Vesey is director of the ApolloClub, a vocal organization with eightymembers.

Mr. Rosenthal, at the New Bry's, re-ports a busy week in phonographs, rec-ords and radio. He has several assist-ants. The department is now againlocated upstairs.

B. F. Wiley, 156 Union avenue, oppo-site the Peabody Hotel, maintains anattractive retail establishment. He re-ports trade as being fair. Good win-dows, carpeted floors, seats and goodsigns show the mark of an experiencedmerchant. Mr. Wiley was long withthe Goldsmith radio department andopened his own store a few months ago.

J. Warren Butler, at Jas. K. Polk,Inc., in the McCall building, is develop-ing a good trade in a wide territoryon the lines of that firm. Phonographs,radio and accessories are carried.

Chattanooga Majestic dealers havehad a busy January despite the wintryweather that has prevailed in the shad-ow of old Lookout Mountain. The newmodels of Majestic are featured atSterchi Bros.; Fowler; Gottschalk Na-tional Furniture Store; Glenn YoungFurniture Co.; Osborn's FurnitureStore and other uptown stores in thatcity.

L. E. Carroll has been appointedmanager of the radio department ofHaverty Furniture Co., Little Rock,Ark., E. V. Markham, general mana-ger, announces. This is Mr. Carroll'sthird promotion since he came with thestore.

The New Albany, Ind., Radio Deal-ers' Association had a dinner -meetingat the Tavern last Wednesday. It wasattended by practically all the mem-bers. Ed. Leaf, president of the organ-ization, was in the chair. There wereseveral informal talks on radio -dealerproblems, a business session followingthe dinner. MILWAUKEE MARKETMILWAUKEE, WIS., Friday.

Although there is still some distressmerchandise on the market here, indi-cations are that it soon will be dis-posed of, and radio sales as a resultare expected to increase. Within thecourse of the next three months, manyof the local stores no doubt will take onthe sale of sets for installation in auto-mobiles.

The Badger Radio Corp., Majestic dis-tributors, is actively engaged in pro-moting "The American School of theAir," whose sessions will be broad-cast every Tuesday and Thursday at1:30 p. m., Central Standard Time,starting Tuesday, February 4. TheTuesday program is to deal with Amer-ican history, while that on Thursdaywill cover a multitude of subjects. Thisis being carried out in an effort to dis-cover more fully the possibilities of theradio method of disseminating educa-tion. It will be watched with interestby local educators, and may be theforerunner of developments, which willput radio in a position of great andfar-reaching significance, which far ex-ceeds that which it occupies today. Theprograms are to be broadcasted overthe Columbia chain and will be of half-hour duration.

The "Daily" Portable Timer-thelatest in coin collectors-designed foruse with Majestic sets, is proving popu-lar in this territory, and is earningconsiderable income for dealers em-ploying its use. These sets are beingplaced in confectionery stores, cigarstores, drug stores, pool rooms, dancehalls, or wherever people congregate.They are either being sold to the ownersof establishments in which they areplaced, or the earnings are shared. Alocal merchant reports that $51.60 wasthe earning of one machine betweenDecember 24 and January 6. The timerpermits the radio to be used five min-utes for a nickel. Any number of nickelsup to twenty may be inserted at onetime.

Mr. Zinke, of the Interstate SalesCo., attended the Auto Show at Chi-cago Sunday for the express purposeof viewing the new Bosch Car Radiodisplayed there. The set, which re-tals at $140.00, is standard equipmenton Reo cars. The installation of thistype of set is extremely simple. Thechassis itself is mounted on the dashyet well out of sight: No drilling ormutilation of the instrument panel isnecessary in its installation. The tun-ing control dial has large and easily

figures, and tuning is further simplifiedby the use of Bosch Line -O -Lightmethod of tuning. A six-inch cone typemagnetic speaker is used, which repro-duces voice and music with surprisingfidelity. This speaker is permanentlymounted to the set chassis itself andcompletely housed to protect all internalparts from damage. The antennaused is fastened to the car chassis.Power is supplied by four blocks of dryB batteries and from the A batterywhich is standard equipment on thecar itself. The set uses less currentthan one headlight, it is said.

W. G. Horton, formerly in charge ofradio sales for the Marachowsky Co.,Majestic dealers at Mauston, Portageand Reedsburg, is now in the employ ofthe O'Connor -Lazar Co., which operatesa store at the corner of Broadway andMason.

C. C. Hicks, Minneapolis, presidentof the North Central Distributors, Vic-tor wholesalers, was in town this weekand called at the local offices. Messrs.Hicks and Nolan, of the Milwaukeedivision have left for the Victor fac-tory in Camden, N. J.

The Wurlitzer store, on Broadwaynear Wisconsin, is conducting a saleon pianos this week. The Lyric radiois being featured in its window. at thepresent time.

Mr. Colman, of Minneapolis, vice-president of the George C. BeckwithCo., called at the local offices of thefirm. He left shortly after for Cincin-nati. During the past week the com-pany has conducted a sales drive on theCrosley set.

"Sound public policy has always for-bidden, and sound public policy mustalways forbid such contracts.

"The fundamental principle uponwhich business is founded, and on whichit has attained its present state of un-precedented development, is the systemof open and fair competition.

"An effort is made to present the billunder the cloak as being aimed at thechain store. The 'effort is to capitalizethe opposition to the chain store sys-tem. In truth, the bill has no bearingwhatever upon the chain -store problem.

"The larger producers and packerssupport this bill. It will increase theirprofits and make them more secure.Numerous retailers have also been in-duced to support the bill by the propa-ganda that it will relieve them from'price -cutting' and other competition.They do not realize that they are tobe the ultimate victims of the measure.More and more the retailer will becomea mere 'agent' and his store a meredepot through which advertising pro-ducers distribute their products. Moreand more he will be driven toward theposition of servant for the large pro-ducer master, and the good will whichhe may strive to build will belong tothe latter. The retailer can get no per-manent benefit from this bill. To re-tain his independence, he must face inthe opposite direction, refuse to handleadvertised specialties, and assert hisright to handle goods under his ownlabels, upon merit and price, accordingto old-time competition.

"The foregoing is confined to the gen-eral principles applicable to the bill.Its objectionable details, of which thereare a number, are obvious," Representa-tive Huddleston stated.

With Creditors Body In United States in 1929Fort Wayne, Ind., Friday.

Reports that creditors were consider-ing asking a receiver for the SteiniteRadio Co., this city, have resulted ina statement from the company's presi-dent J. Abelson, who, in an interviewhere today, stated that his officials hadmet with creditors both in Chicago andNew York, and arranged an agreement.A final meeting was held here recentlyin an attempt to formulate a closerworking arrangement. Mr. Abelsonsaid the company is operating as usual,and making deliveries.

BANKRUPTCY PETITIONFILED BY EFFANEL RADIOA petition in bankruptcy has been

filed by the Effanel Radio Electric Co.,retailer at 3625 Broadway, New York.

More than 22 per cent. of the moneyspent by the American public for theirradio needs during 1929 went into thepurchase of radio tubes, C. R. King,vice-president and assistant generalmanager of E. T. Cunningham, Inc.,New York radio tube manufacturingfirm, said last week. Mr. King madethis assertion after a study of salesfigures of radio products.

From these figures, Mr. King alsocomputed that tube demands and salesequal 37 per cent. of the total amountspent specifically for radio sets. Incomparison to other accessories, includ-ing cabinets, the sale of tubes showeda superior volume exceeding the form-er's mark by about 25 per cent.

Mr. Schneiderhahn further amplifiedhis remark by saying that "right now,when the farmer is more isolated thanat any other time, when the snow isdeep and the roads bad-now is thetime when he especially realizes hisneed for a radio. Right now is thetime when he can be sold a radio easierthan at any other time of the year.He has the time and the inclination totalk about it. Between January 1 andApril 1, the farmer has more leisuretime than any other period.

"In addition," he declared, "the great-est portion of the farmer's income isreceived during the months of Janu-ary, February and March. Many ofthe farmers are now receiving theirmoney for hogs, cattle, etc. Anotherfactor that acts to the advantage ofthe radio salesman is the fact thatthere are fewer people making an ef-fort to sell him. The automobile sales-man and the farmer implement sales-man are not calling on him now."
