This layout has a fixed format, but with a variable length. The length depends on the number of questions for each record generated and how many responses each question has. Each question is separated by an end of question character, which is a dash (-).

 This section depends on the test, how many questions there are and how many possible responses a student can bubble in. For example the 2011 Grade 3 ELA test has 35 Multiple Choice questions for Book 1, Page 1 each with 4 possible responses (1 – 4). So for record number 1 for a student, that would be a total of 35 * 5 (plus the end of question character) = 175 characters. Book 2, Page 3 has 8 Multiple Choice questions each with 4 possible responses (1 – 4) (8 * 5 = 40). Book 2 Page 4 has 3 Constructed Responses with 4 possible responses (0 – 2, A) (3 * 5 = 15). Book 3 Page 4 has 4 Constructed Responses with 4 possible responses (0 – 2, A) (4 * 5 = 20) & 1 more CR with 5 possible responses (0 – 3, A) (1 * 6 = 6). Record number 2 would be a total of = 81 characters.

47 ## ? Response Bubble Read Level Alphanumeric 3 – 9, A – F

Question #, Response # or alpha Minimum Read Level = 3Maximum Light Mark Level = 10Maximum Dark Mark Level = F A Read Level of 0, 1 or 2 is considered as ‘paper’ and is ignored. Scantools, CNYRIC: For the NYS 3-8 tests, a Read Level of 3 & 4 is ignored by default. This can be changed by adjusting the Read Level Threshold at scan time on the Scanner Options window, for the OMR Bubbles setting under the Read Parameters section. Options: Light=Read Level of 3 or higher; Normal=5+ and Dark=7+. Teleforms: Bubble is Blank = 0 Bubble Erased/Crossed out = 8 Bubble is a Dark Mark = F (This would include questions that are considered as a multiple response. All bubbles that are filled in would be considered a Dark Mark = F)
