Associated Press September 3, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets cut ties with two high draft picks once considered future cornerstones of the franchise.

The team announced it waived/injured cornerback Dee Milliner and waived tight end Jace Amaro on Saturday as it reduced its roster to the NFL's mandatory 53-player limit.

The Jets cut 20 players, but made the unconventional choice kept all four quarterbacks — Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg — on their roster. Petty bruised his right shoulder in the preseason finale against Philadelphia, but coach Todd Bowles said Friday that the team wouldn't place him on injured reserve before final cuts.

Right tackle Breno Giacomini was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list with a back injury that sidelined him all of training camp. He will have to sit for at least the first six games of the regular season, leaving the position to either Ben Ijalana or Brent Qvale.

Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson was also officially moved to the reserve/suspended list to begin serving his one-game ban for violating the league's personal conduct policy last summer.

Milliner was the No. 9 overall pick in 2013, but injuries and inconsistency prevented him from living up to expectations. He has dealt with an ailing hamstring, and the waived/injured distinction means he would revert to the Jets' injured reserve list if he clears waivers.

Milliner appeared in just 21 games for the Jets with 68 tackles, three interceptions and 19 passes defensed after starring at Alabama. He was limited to three games in 2014 because of an Achilles injury and five last season because of a wrist injury.

The Jets declined his 2017 contract option, but still must pay him $2.1 million, which was guaranteed for this year. He will also count about $4 million against the salary cap.

Amaro was a second-rounder in 2014 who had 38 catches for 345 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie before missing all of last season with a shoulder injury.

He came to camp healthy and focused, appearing ready to become a valuable part of New York's offense. But, he struggled again at times and failed to impress the coaching staff in the preseason. He missed the third game with a groin injury and played extensively in the preseason finale at Philadelphia, typically when established players sit out.

Zach Sudfeld was also waived, leaving Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick as the only tight ends on the roster.

Fullback Tommy Bohanon, linebacker Trevor Reilly and wide receivers Jeremy Ross and Kenbrell Thompkins were among the Jets' other notable cuts earlier in the day.

Bohanon, a seventh-round pick in 2013, was a bit of a surprise. He had 20 carries for 67 yards and 17 catches for 155 yards in his three seasons. Julian Howsare, a converted linebacker in his second camp with the Jets, remained the only fullback on the roster.

Reilly, a seventh-rounder in 2014, was a key backup at linebacker and a core special teams player. He was waived/injured after getting hurt in the preseason finale against Philadelphia.

Ross was signed in the offseason and competed with undrafted rookie Jalin Marshall for the primary returner job.

It appears Thompkins was made expendable after the emergence this summer of undrafted rookie Robby Anderson, who led the Jets with 13 catches for 264 yards and three touchdowns.

Veteran running back Antone Smith was also released. Among others waived by the Jets were: tight end Wes Saxton, wide receiver Chandler Worthy, guards Mike Liedtke and Craig Watts, defensive linemen Tarow Barney and Claude Pelon, linebackers Freddie Bishop and Taiwan Jones, cornerbacks Bryson Keeton, Darryl Morris and Kevin Short, and safety Doug Middleton.

Jets cut 20 players including Jace Amaro, Dee Milliner (Kimberley Martin) Newsday September 3, 2016

http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/jets/jets-release-thomkins-ross-keep-3-rookie-receivers-1.12263139

Mike Maccagnan just gave up on two of John Idzik’s highest draft picks.

As part of their cutdown to a 53-man roster, the Jets released 2014 second-round draft pick Jace Amaro and waived/injured Dee Milliner, their 2013 first-round pick.

They were selected by Idzik, the Jets’ general manager from 2013-14. But his successor, Maccagnan, wasn’t interested in keeping either player around.

The Jets tried to trade Milliner, the ninth overall pick three years ago, in advance of Saturday’s 4 p.m. deadline but were unsuccessful. They ultimately decided that it was better to dump the disappointing defensive back — and pay his guaranteed $2.1-million salary — than keep him as a backup. Milliner has been bothered by a hamstring injury, and if the oft-injured cornerback goes unclaimed by another team, he’ll revert to the Jets’ injured-reserve list.

Hours before the deadline, the Jets cut 20 players and placed defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson on the suspended list. He’s eligible to return to the team after their Week 1 game against Cincinnati.

After making the Amaro and Milliner moves official, the Jets placed injured right tackle Breno Giacomini (back) on the reserve/PUP list. After spending all of training camp on the active/PUP list, Giacomini will miss the first six games of the regular season.

Fullback Tommy Bohanan, a 2013 seventh-round pick, was released along with veteran receivers Kenbrell Thompkins and Jeremy Ross.

Amaro never saw his release coming. Like another former second-round pick before him — receiver Stephen Hill — the third-year tight end was surprised by questions about his job security after playing in the fourth and final preseason game.

“I think I’ve done what they’ve asked me to do in the passing game,” Amaro said after the Jets’ 14-6 loss in Philadelphia on Thursday night.

“Obviously, catching the ball out here is different than practice — I haven’t played in so long. Getting the ball and handling it, it’s just getting that back and getting the feel of it. I felt better out there today. I’ve never really been concerned about making the roster.”

But instead of keeping him, the Jets chose to make Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick their current 1-2 punch at the position. They also released Zach Sudfeld and Wes Saxton.

Amaro, a former star at Texas Tech, set an FBS record for yardage by a tight end with 1,352 yards on 106 receptions in 2013. Shortly after being drafted 49th overall by the Jets, he made it known that he should have been the first tight end off the board — not Eric Ebron, who was the Lions’ pick at No. 10.

Like Hill, though, Amaro failed to live up to the hype in the NFL. After catching 38 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games as a rookie, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the 2015 preseason opener.

In the spring, he cut out drinking and late nights and reported for the team’s offseason program expecting to be a major contributor. But his progress in training camp was hampered by a recent groin injury and he failed to impress the coaching staff enough.

After Idzik traded away star cornerback Darrelle Revis days before the 2013 draft, he took Milliner as his first-ever pick. Now, three years later, Milliner is gone — and only seven of the 19 draft selections from the Idzik era currently are on the Jets’ roster.

Milliner, 24, has dealt with an assortment of ailments since making it to the NFL, including a wrist injury that required surgery and a torn Achilles tendon last year. And his offseason progress was slowed by biceps and hamstring injuries.

He ends his Jets career with three interceptions, 19 passes defensed and 68 tackles in 21 games.

Trio of rookie receivers survive Jets’ cutdown (Kimberley Martin) Newsday September 3, 2016

The youth movement is alive and well in Florham Park, New Jersey.

Rookie receivers Robby Anderson, Jalin Marshall and seventh-round pick Charone Peake made the Jets’ 53-man roster — a somewhat surprising move considering their collective lack of experience. But the trio showed considerable promise in practice and during the preseason, giving the front office reason to believe in their potential.

Anderson, who went undrafted, led the Jets with 13 catches for 264 yards and three touchdowns in the preseason.

In keeping the three youngsters, the Jets chose to release veteran receivers Kenbrell Thompkins and Jeremy Ross.

A crowd at quarterback

The quarterbacks room will be crowded for the foreseeable future. As expected, injured Bryce Petty made the cut Saturday, meaning the Jets will open the season with four quarterbacks. For now, Petty will remain the third-stringer on a depth chart that includes starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, No. 2 Geno Smith and rookie Christian Hackenberg. Petty injured his right (throwing) shoulder in the Jets’ loss in Philadelphia in the preseason finale, but coach Todd Bowles said the team wouldn’t place him on injured reserve before final cuts.

Bohanan also waived

The Jets cut 20 players: fullback Tommy Bohanan; tight ends Jace Amaro, Zach Sudfeld and Wes Saxton; cornerbacks Darryl Morris, Kevin Short and Bryson Keeton; linebackers Freddie Bishop and Taiwan Jones; wide receivers Thompkins, Ross and Chand ler Worthy; safety Doug Middleton; running back Antone

Smith; defensive linemen Tarow Barney and Claude Pelon, and offensive linemen Mike Liedtke and Craig Watts . . . Cornerback Dee Milliner and linebacker Trevor Reilly were waived with an injury designation, so there’s a chance they could end up on the Jets’ injured-reserve list.

Jets cut Milliner, Amaro (Andy Vasquez) The Record September 3, 2016

http://www.northjersey.com/sports/jets-cut-milliner-amaro-1.1654387

The Jets didn’t have room on their roster for two once-promising prospects.

But they managed to fit in four quarterbacks.

The Jets cut cornerback Dee Milliner and tight end Jace Amaro Saturday as they trimmed their roster to the regular-season, 53-player limit.

The team also put starting tackle Breno Giacomini on the physically unable to perform list, meaning that he’ll miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season.

And they took the unusual step of keeping four quarterbacks on their roster: starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, backup Geno Smith, and two unproven talents in Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg.

But the biggest moves of the day, by far, were parting ways with Milliner and Amaro — two high-profile draft picks that never gained traction with the Jets.

Milliner was picked ninth overall in 2013, but his play never approached expectations that came with that lofty selection.

Milliner has been dogged by injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon that cost him most of the 2014 and ’15 seasons. He’s played only 21 of a possible 48 games in his three seasons, and failed to flash his talent during that time.

The Jets reportedly had been trying to trade Milliner for weeks, but couldn’t get another team to take on his $4.028 million salary cap hit.

Milliner was waived/injured by the Jets; he missed the preseason finale with an injured hamstring. If Milliner clears waivers, he would revert to the Jets’ injured reserve list.

The Jets took Amaro in the second round in 2014. He caught 38 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, but suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in the 2015 preseason.

Amaro missed the third preseason game with a groin injury, and didn’t impress in the other games. But less than 48 hours before being cut, Amaro said he wasn’t worried about his job status.

“I think I’ve done what they’ve asked me to do in the passing game,” Amaro said after the Jets’ preseason finale Thursday in Philadelphia. “I’ve never really been concerned about making the roster.”

Apparently, he should have been.

Saturday’s other notable cuts for the Jets included fullback Tommy Bohanon, receivers Jeremy Ross and Kenbrell Thompkins, linebacker Trevor Reilly and tight end Zach Sudfeld.

The Jets elected to keep three rookie wide receivers: the undrafted Jalin Marshall and Robby Anderson, and seventh-round pick Charone Peake. Marshall likely will handle kick/punt return duties.

The Jets’ other cuts were: defensive linemen Tarrow Barney and Claude Pelon; linebackers Trevor Reilly (waived/injured), Freddie Bishop and Taiwan Jones; cornerbacks Bryson Keeton, Darryl Morris and Kevin

Short; guards Mike Liedtke and Craig Watts; safety Doug Middleton, wide receiver Chandler Worthy, running back Antone Smith and tight end Wes Saxton.

Meanwhile, defensive end Sheldon Richardson’s one-game suspension went into effect Saturday at 4 p.m.

Jets' philosophy: Out with the underachievers, in with the quarterbacks (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York September 3, 2016

http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/62807/jets-philosophy-out-with-the-underachievers-in-with-the-quarterbacks

The New York Jets cut 20 players on Saturday, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. They also placed defensive end Sheldon Richardson on the reserve/suspended list and right tackle Breno Giacomini (back) on reserve/PUP, removing them from the roster. Here’s a closer look at the final cuts:

Most significant move: The decision to waive cornerback Dee Milliner (first round, 2013) and tight end Jace Amaro (second round, 2014) sends a loud message: No free passes, regardless of draft status. Milliner and Amaro were drafted by the previous regime, which didn't help their job security. They could've overcome that with strong preseasons, but that didn't happen. Milliner struggled in two games, lacking proper ball and field awareness. He missed the finale because of an injury -- hardly a surprise, as he missed 27 of 48 games over three years. The Jets wanted him gone so badly they were willing to eat his guaranteed $2.1 million, meaning there's no cap savings. They're high on rookie Juston Burris and prefer him as the No. 4 corner. Amaro has talent, but the organization lost patience with his drops and lack of mental toughness. The Jets opted to keep two journeymen at tight end, Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick, which tells you what they think of Amaro.

Most significant non-move: After weeks of speculation, they decided to keep all four quarterbacks. Yeah, it's unorthodox, but it's the right call. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith are their short-term quarterbacks, with Bryce Petty (injured) and rookie Christian Hackenberg the long-term options. Barring an unexpected move, they'll be the first team in three years and only the seventh in the past 11 years to open with four quarterbacks. Chances are, Petty and Hackenberg won't see the field, but they're the only two under contract for 2017. Petty didn't do enough to overtake Smith at the No. 2, but he showed signs of progress. Hackenberg is on scholarship. The downside to keeping four: It hurts the team's depth at another position. You might say the Jets kept Petty over Amaro.

Not the same "old" Jets: The Jets have 10 rookies on the roster -- seven draft picks and three undrafted free agents. You might say there's a generation gap on the team, which is built largely around their older players -- nine starters at least 30 years old. Because of poor drafting from 2008 to 2014, there's a lack of talent in the middle-aged category. That will change in time, as long as general manager Mike Maccagnan's newbies develop into productive players. The youth is most evident at wide receiver, which includes three rookies -- Charone Peake, Robby Anderson and Jalin Marshall, the favorites to return punts and kickoffs. The Jets opted for them over Kenbrell Thompkins and Jeremy Ross.

Extreme makeover: The backfield is virtually unrecognizable compared to last season. The only holdover is Bilal Powell. Gone are Chris Ivory and fullback Tommy Bohanon, who surprisingly got a pink slip. The newcomers are Matt Forte and Khiry Robinson (y0u knew about them), along with former practice-squad fullback Julian Howsare and Dominique Williams. Anybody have them on their roster projection? Didn't

Page 10: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/09-Septem… · Saturday as it reduced its roster to the NFL's mandatory 53-player limit. The Jets

think so. We're talking about a couple of first-year free agents from Clarion and Wagner, respectively. Stay tuned -- there could be more moves coming -- but this position will have a new look.

Lingering questions: Without Giacomini, the Jets are prepared to start Ben Qvale or Ben Ijalana at right tackle. They're scouring the waiver wire, but finding a starting-caliber player on the final cut down is virtually impossible (unless they swing a significant trade). Don't be surprised if there's some movement at tight end. Davis is strictly a blocker and Bostick has only nine career catches. They have only four healthy corners.

Jets' moves: Waived FB Tommy Bohanon, WR Kenbrell Thompkins, WR/KR Jeremy Ross, WR Chandler Worthy, TE Jace Amaro, TE Zach Sudfeld, TE Wes Saxton, RB Antone Smith, Craig Watts, G Mike Liedtke, DE Claude Pelon, DE Tarow Barney, LB Trevor Reilly, LB Freddie Bishop, LB Taiwan Jones, CB Darryl Morris, CB Dee Milliner, CB Kevin Short, CB Bryson Keeton, S Doug Middleton.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/17456671/new-york-jets-roster-cuts-include-cornerback-dee-milliner-tight-end-jace-amaro

Clearing the way to keep four quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, the New York Jets waived two high draft picks from the previous regime -- cornerback Dee Milliner and tight end Jace Amaro -- league sources said Saturday.

The oft-injured Milliner, the ninth overall pick in 2013, struggled in the preseason and missed the last game because of a hamstring injury. Sources said the Jets tried to trade Milliner, who began training camp as the No. 4 cornerback but lost his spot to rookie Juston Burris.

Amaro was a second-round pick in 2014 but never lived up to expectations. Determined to rebound after missing 2015 due to shoulder surgery, Amaro got off to a fast start in training camp but he fizzled in the preseason games, failing to capitalize on a wide-open competition at his position.

Currently, Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick are the only tight ends on the roster.

The Jets faced tough roster decisions on cut-down day, starting with the quarterback position. They will go into the season with starter Ryan Fitzpatrick, plus backups Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg.

Petty bruised his throwing shoulder in the final preseason game, but it wasn't serious enough to warrant injured reserve.

Fitzpatrick and Smith will be the only two quarterbacks to dress on game day.

The last time a team began the season with four quarterbacks was 2013, when the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings both did it. It has happened only six times over the past decade, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The Jets' decision came as no surprise, as coach Todd Bowles indicated Friday that Petty would remain on the 53-man roster through the weekend.

Milliner, a former Alabama standout, became the latest in a long line of first-round disappointments for the Jets. He showed promised as a rookie, but he missed 27 out of 48 games in his first three seasons.

He suffered a myriad of injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon and a torn wrist ligament. Counting college, he has undergone at least seven surgeries.

The Jets declined to exercise their fifth-year option in the spring, claiming Milliner would be given an opportunity to play and increase his value before free agency. Happy with their other corners, the team started shopping him in camp, finding no takers.

Milliner's $2.1 million salary is guaranteed, so the Jets don't save any cap room by releasing him.

FB Tommy Bohanon, WR Kenbrell Thompkins among Jets' cuts (Rich Cimini) ESPN New York September 3, 2016

http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/62809/fb-tommy-bohanon-wr-kenbrell-thompkins-among-jets-cuts

Fullback Tommy Bohanon was the only surprise among the first 18 players released Saturday by the New York Jets.

They slashed the roster to 56 players, also placing defensive end Sheldon Richardson on the reserve/suspended list, as expected. They have to get down to 53 players by 4 p.m.

Bohanon was thought to be a sure thing, as his name didn't surface in any pre-cutdown speculation. The fullback position is an afterthought in Chan Gailey's offense, but Bohanon still played in 24 percent of the offensive snaps in 2015, eighth among NFL fullbacks. He also was a core special-teamer; he logged 234 special-teams snaps, fourth on the Jets.

The only fullback on the roster is Julian Howsare, a former college linebacker who was converted to fullback a year ago. It wasn't immediately clear if he has made the team.

Bohanon, a seventh-round pick in 2013, was entering the final year of his contract.

Looking at the other cuts, only a few catch the eye: Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins, receiver/returner Jeremy Ross, tight end Zach Sudfeld and linebacker Trevor Reilly.

Thompkins began training camp at the No. 4 receiver, but he got hurt and was leap-frogged by three rookies -- Charone Peake, Jalin Marshall and Robby Anderson. Right now, they have six receivers on the roster, including the three rookies. That likely won't change.

By cutting Thompkins, the Jets save $1.7 million on the cap. They began the final cutdown with only $1.1 million in cap room, so every little bit helps.

Other cuts: Guards Craig Watts and Mike Liedtke; tight end Wes Saxton; wide receiver Chandler Worthy; running back Antone Smith; defensive linemen Claude Pelon and Tarow Barney; linebacker Freddie Bishop; cornerbacks Darryl Morris, Kevin Short and Bryson Keeton; and safety Doug Middleton.

Jets drop ax on mega-busts Dee Milliner and Jace Amaro (Brian Costello) New York Post September 3, 2016

Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan wielded the ax on two disappointing high draft picks Saturday.

The Jets waived both cornerback Dee Milliner, a first-round pick in 2013, and tight end Jace Amaro, a second-round pick in 2014, as they trimmed their roster to 53 players. Milliner was waived with an injury designation because he has a hamstring injury and could revert to the team’s injured reserve list if he clears waivers. The more likely outcome is an injury settlement and they part ways.

Both players had injury issues as Jets and never lived up to their draft status. The cuts lop two more mistakes of former GM John Idzik off the roster. Just seven of the 19 players he drafted in 2013-14 remain on the roster.

Maccagnan kept all four quarterbacks on the roster as he said consistently since May that he might. The Jets are the first team since the 2013 Redskins and Vikings to carry four quarterbacks on their roster.

Though the initial cuts are over, there could be more Sunday as the Jets claim players off waivers. But it appears now the team is going with a youth movement at wide receiver, keeping three rookies — Jalin Marshall, Robby Anderson and Charone Peake — while dumping veterans Jeremy Ross and Kenbrell Thompkins.

The biggest news out of the cuts, though, was the decision to dump Milliner and Amaro. The Milliner move was particularly surprising because his $2.1 million salary is guaranteed for this year. He will count $4 million against the salary cap this season even though he is gone. Rookie Juston Burris appeared to pass him on the depth chart recently, taking over the No. 4 cornerback role.

Amaro’s status began to look shaky late in training camp as his place in the tight end rotation slipped and he suffered a groin injury that cost him the preseason game against the Giants. He returned this week for the final preseason game, but was underwhelming.

Milliner was the first pick of Idzik, who hoped he could fill the hole left by the trade of Darrelle Revis.

Milliner’s career never got off the ground with the Jets. He had a disappointing rookie season that included being benched several times by the coaches. He made three interceptions in the final two games of the 2013 season, giving the coaches hope for him moving forward. But it never translated.

Milliner had injury issues in training camp in 2014 then played three games before suffering an Achilles tendon tear that ended his season. Last year, he underwent wrist surgery in training camp. When he returned at midseason, new coach Todd Bowles did not use him for one defensive snap, limiting him to only special teams.

The 24-year-old returned this season hoping to win the trust of the coaches. He had a disappointing training camp that included another injury, this time a hamstring, that led to him getting cut Saturday.

Idzik selected Amaro in the second round of the 2014 draft out of Texas Tech, where he had 106 catches as a junior. Amaro had a shaky rookie year that was plagued by drops. He had 38 catches for 345 yards and two touchdowns. He missed the 2015 season with a shoulder injury.

Amaro returned this year, hoping for a breakout season. He had a strong start to training camp, but then fizzled.

The only other familiar names to Jets fans who were cut were fullback Tommy Bohanon, tight end Zach Sudfeld and linebacker Trevor Reilly.

The team placed right tackle Breno Giacomini on Reserve/PUP, meaning he will miss at least the first six games of the season. Giacomini has a back issue.

Jets’ roster cuts signal youth at wideout, mystery at fullback (Brian Costello) New York Post September 3, 2016

http://nypost.com/2016/09/03/jets-roster-cuts-signal-youth-at-wideout-mystery-at-fullback/

It looks as if the Jets are going with a youth movement at wide receiver.

The team began reducing its roster to 53 players on Saturday, and so far all three rookie wide receivers remain on the roster. The team cut both Kenbrell Thompkins and Jeremy Ross, veterans who were fighting for spots with the kids.

Rookies Jalin Marshall, Robby Anderson and Charone Peake have had strong training camps, and they are in position to make the team. Things can change, though, later Saturday or Sunday when the Jets can make waiver claims.

The Jets have cut 18 players and defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson will move to the suspended list at 4 p.m., leaving their roster at 56. The Jets still have three moves to make by 4 p.m.

One of those may be moving tackle Breno Giacomini to the Reserve/PUP list, which would keep him from counting against the 53. He would be out until at least Week 7 if they do that. Giacomini missed training camp with a back injury.

Of the cuts, the biggest surprise was fullback Tommy Bohanon. The 2013 seventh-round pick has been the team’s primary fullback since his rookie season. He played in all 16 games last year with four starts. Julian Howsare, a converted linebacker, is the only other fullback on the roster. He was seen as a long shot to make the roster.

The only other semi-big names cut were tight end Zach Sudfeld, who has been with the team since 2013, and linebacker Trevor Reilly, a 2014 seventh-round pick. Reilly was waived with an injury designation, so he could revert to the team’s injured reserve list.

NJ ADVANCE

After cutdown, why Jets still aren't done with Dee Milliner and his contract (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media September 4, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/why_dee_milliners_contract_wont_disappear_from_jet.html#incart_river_index

The Jets on Saturday waived oft-injured cornerback Dee Milliner, the No. 9 overall draft pick in 2013.

He was their highest-profile cut of Saturday. He also was, unquestionably, a bust for the Jets.

But that doesn't mean he is gone. And that definitely doesn't mean his contract is off the Jets' books. Far from it.

The Jets waived Milliner — who has a hamstring injury — with an injury designation. So what does that mean, exactly?

Well, if Milliner goes unclaimed on waivers (and he probably will), then he would revert to the Jets' injured reserve list. So he'd be back with the team. (Teams can begin making waiver claims at noon Sunday.)

Even with Milliner on IR, his 2016 salary cap figure would not change — $4.028 million. The Jets would have to eat that cap hit. Milliner's rookie contract is fully guaranteed. He is entering the final year of the deal.

The Jets technically could release Milliner off IR with an injury settlement, but there really wouldn't be a settlement, because he has a fully guaranteed deal.

What about short-term IR, so the Jets can get some value out of Milliner's cap hit this year? After all, his hamstring injury probably isn't a season-ending thing. Short-term IR is a possibility, if the Jets decide they want some corner depth.

Among a team's IR players, it can select one for short-term IR. As long as the player spends at least six weeks on IR, he can then practice. After two additional weeks, he can participate in a game. So Milliner would have to miss the Jets' first eight games, if he winds up being their short-term IR guy.

The Jets wanted to trade Milliner on Saturday, but they couldn't find a willing partner, in terms of compensation, etc. Which casts serious doubts on whether a team would claim him on waivers.

Let's say, for argument's sake, that a team claims Milliner. That team would absorb a $675,000 salary cap hit for Milliner — his fully guaranteed base salary in 2016. The Jets would still be on the hook for Milliner's prorated signing bonus and also his 2016 roster bonus — a total cap hit of about $3.353 million.

Page 15: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/09-Septem… · Saturday as it reduced its roster to the NFL's mandatory 53-player limit. The Jets

So even if Milliner is totally gone, via an unlikely waiver claim, the Jets would still have to eat a $3.353 million cap hit for him this year, rather than the full $4.028 million. They'll probably end up having to eat the entire amount, though.

(If Milliner was healthy and the Jets had released him and he cleared waivers, they still would have to absorb the full $4.028 million, in that case.)

And remember, Milliner technically could still wind up playing for the Jets this season, if they need him, because of the short-term IR option.

Regardless of what happens, Milliner is going to collect every penny of his $12.661 million rookie contract. And the Jets will still have to absorb a sizable cap hit for him in 2016. Milliner being waived Saturday didn't change any of that.

Why players who made Jets' 53-man roster aren't safe yet (Connor Hughes) NJ Advance Media September 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/why_players_who_made_jets_53-man_roster_arent_safe.html#incart_river_index

The Jets may have released their 53-man roster Saturday afternoon, but that doesn't mean these players will take the field against the Bengals Week 1.

Is it a good sign for those still on the roster? Absolutely. But they aren't out of the woods yet. Things are about to get funky. Real funky.

Here's why:

The NFL set a deadline for all of its 32 teams to drop their rosters from 75 players, to 53, before 4 p.m. Saturday. And all teams did. Players were waived, released, waived/injured, placed on the injured reserve or on the physically unable to perform list. At the conclusion, this is what the Jets' initial roster looks like.

Keyword: Initial.

As is the case every year, some quality players are let go in this massive wave of roster trimming. For example, the Ravens cut running back Justin Forsett, who just two years ago ran for 1,266 yards. The Packers cut three-time Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton.

For veterans like Sitton and Forsett, they are free to sign with any team of their choosing. But players that have been in the league less than three years can't be released. Instead, they are waived and placed on the waiver wire. At 12 p.m. Sunday, teams can put in claims for waived players. Whichever team puts in the highest claim is awarded that player.

The waiver wire order, right now, is the same as the NFL Draft. So the Jets are slotted 20th. If the Jets (20th claim) and Broncos (32nd claim) both put a claim in on a player, that player would be awarded to the Jets. They have a higher claim. If the Jets and Giants (10th claim) both put a claim in on a player, the player would be awarded to the Giants, because the Giants have a higher claim than the Jets.

Now, once a team signs or is awarded a player off the waiver wire, they must release/waive a player to make room. And that's where the Jets' present 53-man roster can change.

See, while the Jets released their 53-man roster Saturday evening, they won't know their actual 53 man roster until Sunday following the waiver wire.

Jets place Breno Giacomini on PUP list. Who will play right tackle? (Darryl Slater) NJ Advanced Media September 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/jets_breno_giacomini_pup_list.html#incart_river_mobileshort_index

The Jets on Saturday placed right tackle Breno Giacomini, who is dealing with a lingering lower back strain, on the regular season PUP list.

So he will have to miss at least the season's first six games. Giacomini began training camp on the PUP list. His placement on the regular season PUP list came as no surprise, since he didn't appear close to returning.

Giacomini has been injured since mid-June. It is not clear when he'll be able to practice again, let alone play.

So who will play right tackle for the Jets in Week 1 against the Bengals? The Jets' opener is just a week from Sunday, remember.

Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale — both very inexperienced — have been competing for the job. But the Jets could always make a waiver claim Sunday and acquire a right tackle. Teams can begin making waiver claims at noon Sunday.

How quickly would a waiver-claimed right tackle be ready to start for the Jets, though?

Jets coach Todd Bowles said Friday that Ijalana and Qvale are even in their competition. Bowles said the players will alternate practice reps next week, and that a decision on who starts probably will "go right up until game day."

Because the Jets kept Giacomini on their PUP list, they didn't need to make a 21st cut Saturday. They cut 20 players. Their other two roster moves involved Giacomini and defensive end Sheldon Richardson. On Saturday, the Jets officially placed Richardson (one-week suspension) on the suspended list.

Wide receiver Devin Smith (ACL) was already on the regular season PUP list. He and Giacomini are the Jets' only PUP list guys to begin the regular season.

Now the Jets are at 53 players on their active roster, as they continue to seek a starting right tackle for at least the first six games.

Jets keep 4 quarterbacks (seriously) on 53-man roster | Is it the right move? (Connor Hughes) NJ Advance Media September 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/jets_keep_4_quarterbacks_on_53-man_roster.html#incart_river_mobileshort_index

Way back in April, right after selecting Christian Hackenberg in the second round of the NFL Draft, Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan was asked about keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.

"If the best thing for the team, at the end of training camp, is that we carry four quarterbacks," Maccagnan said, "we'll carry four quarterbacks."

Well, the Jets just finished trimming their roster and, apparently, the best thing for the team is keeping four quarterbacks. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Hackenberg are all on the roster.

Page 17: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/09-Septem… · Saturday as it reduced its roster to the NFL's mandatory 53-player limit. The Jets

17 | P a g e

Yes really.

In a world where teams keep just two quarterbacks — three is considered pushing it — the Jets' unorthodox roster structure is more out of necessity than anything else. It's highly unlikely head coach Todd Bowles and Maccagnan want to keep four signal callers. They have to.

Fitzpatrick is the team's starter, which locks him in place. Hackenberg is the presumed future, which locks him in. Smith is the only player outside of Fitzpatrick with NFL game experience, so that locks him in. Petty, on paper, seems like the logical choice to be waived, but outside of Hackenberg, he's the only quarterback under contract entering next season— Smith is on the final year of his rookie contract, and Fitzpatrick's contract is structured so that he will be a free agent in March.

Ideal or not, the Jets can't afford not to carry four quarterbacks.

Now, there is still a chance the team makes a change at quarterback in the coming days. In the Jets' preseason finale Thursday night, Petty bruised his shoulder. It's not dislocated, nor is there any structural damage. But the Jets haven't set a recovery timetable.

The NFL changed its rules regarding the injured reserve this year. Gone is the designation to return, and requirement to pre-label a player. Now, any one player can be activated off the injured reserve after a stay of six weeks.

Which means, theoretically, the Jets could place Petty on the injured reserve, free a roster spot, and use it for depth at another position. If Smith or Fitzpatrick were to get hurt, the Jets could activate Petty after six weeks. Whether Petty is activated, or were to remain on IR the entire season, he will still be under contract going into 2017.

Speaking via conference call on Friday, Bowles didn't rule out the idea of placing Petty on the injured reserve. He said the team would evaluate him this week, and see how he responds to treatment.

Which means, at least right now, the Jets are going to carry four quarterbacks on the roster into the regular season.

It's inconvenient, but not the wrong move.

Here is Jets' initial 53-man roster, after final cuts (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media September 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/here_is_jets_initial_53-man_roster_after_final_cut.html#incart_river_mobileshort_index

The Jets have made their final cuts, from 75 players on their roster, to 53.

The deadline for them to cut to 53 was 4 p.m. Saturday.

The Jets on Saturday cut 20 players, and also placed right tackle Breno Giacomini (back) on the physically unable to perform list and defensive end Sheldon Richardson (one-week suspension) on the suspended list.

There probably will be changes to this "final" 53-man roster, due to waiver claims, which teams can begin making at noon Sunday.

But for now, here's a position-by-position look at who made it and who didn't:

Jets waive/injured cornerback Dee Milliner, who has played 8 games last 2 years? (Connor Hughes) NJ Advance Media September 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/jets_release_cornerback_dee_milliner_report_says.html#incart_river_mobileshort_index

Dee Milliner's time with the Jets has come to a close.

The Jets waived/injured Milliner on Saturday, the team announced in a press release. If Milliner goes unclaimed on the waiver wire, he will be placed on the injured reserve. Milliner is dealing with a minor hamstring injury.

Milliner, 24, had an up-and-down summer with the Jets. While Darrelle Revis rehabbed from offseason wrist surgery, Milliner got first-team reps in organized team activities, minicamp and the first few training camp practices. He looked quite good, too, and earned rave reviews from the coaching staff.

"He's making a lot of big plays," defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers said in early August. "We'll be running kind of like a ball disruption drill, and he is right in there every time you look up. He's stripping a ball, tipping one, making an interception."

That, of course, was in practice. In the preseason, Milliner struggled mightily. He let up two long completions against the Jaguars, and a long touchdown against the Giants. He missed a significant portion of the Washington game with a bicep injury, and the entire Eagles game with a hamstring issue.

The Jets' attempt to trade Milliner first, as opposed to waiving him instantly, was likely a salary cap tactic. By cutting Milliner, the Jets still need to pay him $4.028 million this season. If they had succeeded in trading him, the Jets would have only had to pay $1.897 million, and would have freed $2.131 million.

The Jets selected Milliner with the No. 9 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Since that point in time, it has been one injury after another. Milliner suffered a high ankle sprain as a rookie, ruptured his Achilles' tendon in Year 2, and began last season on the short-term injured reserve with a wrist injury.

Of a potential 48 career games, Milliner has played in 21, including just eight the last two seasons.

With Milliner gone, the Jets have five cornerbacks on the 53-man roster— Darrelle Revis, Buster Skrine, Marcus Williams, Dexter McDougle and rookie Juston Burris.

Jets cut Jace Amaro, just 2 years after drafting him in Round 2 (Darryl Slater) NJ Advance Media September 3, 2016

http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/09/jets_cut_jace_amaro.html#incart_river_mobileshort_index

The Jets on Saturday cut tight end Jace Amaro, a league source confirmed to NJ Advance Media.

Amaro was drafted by the Jets in Round 2 in 2014. He sputtered at times during his rookie season, but showed potential, too. He missed all of last season with a shoulder injury.

Page 20: NEW YORK JETS DAILY CLIPSprod.static.jets.clubs.nfl.com/assets/docs/clippings/2016/09-Septem… · Saturday as it reduced its roster to the NFL's mandatory 53-player limit. The Jets

20 | P a g e

Early in training camp this year, Amaro looked improved. But he failed to impress during preseason games. And he missed the Week 3 preseason game against the Giants due to a groin injury.

Amaro played extensively in the preseason finale at the Eagles — never a good sign for a player's roster spot security. After the game, he seemed surprised that reporters were quizzing him about perhaps being cut.

Earlier Saturday, the Jets cut tight end Zach Sudfeld and Wes Saxton. Amaro was the Jets' third tight end cut Saturday. Kellen Davis was ahead of Amaro on the depth chart. Brandon Bostick also still remains.

By cutting Amaro, the Jets created about $810,000 in 2016 salary cap space. Amaro was due to count $1.17 million against the Jets' 2016 cap.

These were Amaro's stats in three preseason games: five catches (on 11 targets) for 35 yards. In the preseason finale, Amaro had three catches (on four targets) for 24 yards.

Amaro's release, first reported by Newsday, continues the Jets' struggles recently with second-round draft picks.

The release also brings to mind wide receiver Stephen Hill, the Jets' second-round pick in 2012. They cut him after just two seasons.

Amaro didn't even get two full seasons with the Jets, since he was injured last year. But just like Hill, Amaro is gone, two years after being drafted in Round 2.

Here is the Jets' mostly grim ledger of second-round picks since they drafted middle linebacker David Harris in Round 2 in 2007: offensive lineman Vlad Ducasse (2010), Hill (2012), quarterback Geno Smith (2013), Amaro (2014), receiver Devin Smith (2015), and quarterback Christian Hackenberg (2016).

Jets cut-down day 2016: A running list of Gang Green’s final roster cuts (Peter Botte) New York Daily News September 3, 2016

Jets dump former 1st-round pick Dee Milliner, also send TE Jace Amaro packing to get down to 53-man roster (Manish Mehta/Peter Botte) New York Daily News September 3, 2016

Tight end Jace Amaro and cornerback Dee Milliner — two draft busts of the John Idzik regime — officially have had their wings clipped by the Jets.

There were few surprises among the Jets’ latest round of cuts and other moves for much of Saturday, until the two former high-end picks were waived in the final hours before the 4 p.m. deadline to help pare down the roster to 53 players.

The Jets notably also still have four quarterbacks on the active roster: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Geno Smith, Bryce Petty — who currently is nursing a shoulder injury — and rookie second-round pick Christian Hackenberg.

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan attempted to but was unable to trade Milliner, so they waived (with a hamstring injury designation) the ninth overall pick in the 2013 draft. He carries a $4.028 million salary-cap hit and will be assigned to injured reserve if unclaimed on waivers.

The first draft pick of Idzik’s failed front-office tenure, Milliner had three interceptions as a rookie out of Alabama in 2013 — but none in just eight appearances over the past two years due to ankle, Achilles tendon and wrist injuries. Barring other moves, Juston Burris and Dexter McDougle have made the squad over the 24-year-old Milliner as the fourth and fifth cornerbacks.

Milliner infamously referred to himself in 2014 as “the best corner in the league,” but he admittedly backed off that label last month and said he just wanted “to go out and all-around try to have a great year, whatever it may be.

“It was no comparison saying I’m the best cornerback in the league,” Milliner told the Daily News on Aug. 18. “Of course, the Richard Shermans, the Patrick Petersons, the Joe Hadens, the Darrelle Revises are on a whole different pedestal. The cornerstone of DBs. So they got their own thing going. Those are the great guys of today’s game and will go down in history as great guys.

“So I’m not saying none of that. I was just saying that I’m confident in what I can do and I believe in what I can do.”

Amaro was the Jets’ second-round pick out of Texas Tech in 2014 — also by Idzik — but he missed all of last season with a shoulder injury after making 38 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie. There are only four members of Idzik’s 12-man 2014 draft left on the roster: Calvin Prior, Quincy Enunwa, McDougle and Dakota Dozier.

Tight end Zach Sudfeld also was among those waived, leaving Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick as the only tight ends presently on coach Todd Bowles’ roster.

Wide receivers Jeremy Ross, Kenbrell Thompkins (formerly Patriots/Raiders) and Chandler Worthy also were cut, which means three rookie wideouts — Robby Anderson, undrafted Ohio State free agent Jalin Marhsall and seventh-round pick Charone Peake — currently are on the roster.

The Jets, who open the season next Sunday against Cincinnati, also no longer have a true fullback after waiving Tommy Bohanon, a 2013 seventh-round pick. Converted linebacker Julian Howsare is the only fullback listed on the roster.

Defensive tackle Tarow Barney (undrafted, Penn State), former Bears and Falcons running back Antone Smith and defensive end Claude Pelon also were waived, with Pelon’s agency DEC Management tweeting “with the intentions of adding him to their practice squad if he isn’t claimed.”

Agent Brett Tessler also tweeted that his client, released offensive guard Mike Liedtke, is “a definite candidate for the (Jets’) practice squad.”

Gang Green also cut tight end Wes Saxton, guard Craig Watts, linebackers Freddie Bishop, Taiwan Jones and (waived/injured) Trevor Reilly (seventh-round pick, 2014), as well as cornerbacks Darryl Morris, Bryson Keeton and Kevin Short and safety Doug Middleton, another reported practice-squad candidate.

Defensive end Sheldon Richardson’s one-game suspension — for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy due to a 2015 offseason arrest — also went into effect at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Jets’ final move was to shift right tackle Breno Giacomini, who started every game the past two seasons, to the Reserve/PUP list after he missed training camp with a back injury. That will keep him out for at least the first six weeks of the season.

The Jets Cut Dee Milliner, Jace Amaro and Keep Four Quarterbacks (Jim Chairusmi) Wall Street Journal September 3, 2016

The Jets trimmed their roster to 53 players on Saturday, cutting cornerback Dee Milliner, a 2013 first-round pick, and tight end Jace Amaro, a second-round pick in 2014.

Milliner missed the team’s final preseason game against the Eagles due to a hamstring injury and was waived/injured. He could revert to injured reserve if unclaimed, but an injury settlement is the likelier scenario. The former Alabama star has had difficulty staying healthy, missing 27 of 48 games during his three-year NFL career.

Milliner appeared to have been passed on the depth chart this summer by rookie Juston Burris, who will begin the season as the team’s No. 4 corner, behind Darrelle Revis, Buster Skrine and Marcus Williams.

After catching 38 balls for 345 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games during his rookie season, Amaro missed the entire 2015 season due to a torn shoulder labrum.

Amaro sat out the third preseason game due to a groin injury, but had three catches for 24 yards against the Eagles on Thursday. Kellen Davis and Brandon Bostick are currently the only tight ends on the roster, after the Jets also released Zach Sudfeld and Wes Saxton on Saturday.

Speaking with the media on Friday, coach Todd Bowles had indicated that defensive back, tight end and wide receiver were among the positions with the toughest decisions to make. “There’s going to be some tough cuts,” Bowles said.

At wide receiver, the team kept a trio of rookies—seventh-round pick Charone Peake and free agents Robby Anderson and Jalin Marshall, while releasing veterans Kenbrell Thompkins and Jeremy Ross.

In the end, the Jets opted to keep four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Ryan Fitzpatrick is the starter, with Geno Smith as the No. 2 guy. It’s unlikely that Bryce Petty, who suffered a bruised right shoulder in the final preseason game, or Christian Hackenberg, will see much action this season but they are the only two under contract for 2017.

To help reach the 53-player limit, the Jets placed right tackle Breno Giacomini on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Giacomini is dealing with a back injury and won’t be eligible to return until after Week 6. Ben Ijalana and Brent Qvale have been alternating at right tackle in the preseason.

Defensive end Sheldon Richardson will serve a one-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy and was placed on the suspended list. He’ll miss the Sept. 11 opener against the Bengals and return for the Week 2 game in Buffalo on Sept. 15.
