SERIES RECAP The Giants and Redskins have played each
other 158 times since 1932 and the Giants lead the regular
season series, 91‐61‐4. The postseason series is tied, 1‐1.
In 2010, the Giants beat the Redskins twice in late‐season
matchups. The first came at home in Week 13, when the Giants
won, 31‐7. In the final game of the 2010 regular season, the
Giants won at Washington, 17‐14.
THE LAST TIME vs. REDSKINS The Giants took care of their own business and never trailed in a 17‐14 victory over the Redskins at FedEx Field to end the 2010 season.
Despite a 10‐6 record (the same as the Packers, who made the playoffs, and the Buccaneers, who did not), the Giants finished out of the playoffs for the second consecutive season for the first time since 2003‐04.
The only points of the first quarter came when Lawrence Tynes capped a 10‐play, 78‐yard drive with a 20‐yard field goal.
Brandon Jacobs scored on a two‐yard run with 3:06 remaining in the second quarter to give the Giants a 10‐0 lead. The score was set up by Kevin Boss’ one‐handed catch of Eli Manning’s 24‐yard pass on the previous play, which was the longest gain of the nine‐play, 69‐yard drive.
The Redskins scored their first points of the game when Fred Davis cut across the end zone on second‐and‐goal and caught Rex Grossman’s pass, making the score 10‐7 at half.
Early in the third quarter, Mario Manningham got behind D’Angelo Hall and caught Manning’s pass for a 92‐yard touchdown, the third‐longest in Giants history. Manningham took the ball in at the Giants’ 35‐yard line and sprinted to the end zone, putting the Giants up by 10.
It was the second week in a row Manning threw the longest touchdown pass of his career (both to Manningham). The previous was an 85‐yarder at Green Bay.
In the fourth quarter, the Giants twice stopped Washington on fourth down, and Osi Umenyiora and Kenny Phillips recovered fumbles to help preserve the win.
Washington scored on Grossman’s 64‐yard pass to Anthony Armstrong. On the first play following a Giant punt, Armstrong got behind Giants safety Antrel Rolle, caught Grossman’s pass and won a footrace to the end zone, making the score 17‐14 with 5:52 to play.
The Giants held the ball for almost four minutes before punting and although Washington moved the ball to the Giants’ 36‐yard line, the Giants’ defense forced a turnover on downs, effectively ending the game.

GIANTS AND JETS TO CALL METLIFE STADIUM HOME
On Aug. 23, MetLife, the Giants and the Jets announced the signing of a 25‐year agreement to name the venue, previously
known as New Meadowlands Stadium, MetLife Stadium.
“With our status as one of the world's leading life insurers, we wanted to partner with a world‐class venue that would extend
the reach of our brand to levels unmatched in the industry,” said Steven A. Kandarian, president and chief executive officer of
MetLife.
MetLife Stadium is one of the highest‐profile stadiums in the country with more than two million fans attending events every
year, and it will host Super Bowl XLVIII in February 2014. As home to the Giants and Jets, it is the only stadium that houses two NFL
teams, both of which are ranked among the top‐five most valuable franchises in the league and have substantial national fan bases.
“MetLife was one of the stadium’s early supporters, having signed on as the first cornerstone sponsor,” said John Mara,
president and chief executive officer of the New York Giants. “We are thrilled to expand the relationship, and look forward to
kicking off the first of many exciting seasons at MetLife Stadium.”
“In the coming days and all throughout the seasons ahead, MetLife’s influence in the home of the Giants and Jets will be
impossible to overlook,” added Steve Tisch, chairman and executive vice president of the New York Giants. “We are pleased to
partner with such a well‐respected company, and be closely associated with the signature MetLife assets.”
The MetLife Stadium agreement makes MetLife the official insurance company of the Giants, Jets and the stadium complex,
and includes high‐profile interior and exterior branding on the venue. Specific elements of the agreement include: naming rights to
the stadium; 120,000 square feet of branded space at the main west entrance; for illuminated signs on the exterior of the building;
four inner‐bowl signs; and TV, radio, print and online media opportunities.

GIANTS ASK FANS TO HELP CREATE
ONLINE MOSAIC IN HONOR OF 9‐11 VICTIMS AND HEREOS
Tweet Thoughts & Memories to #NYGNEVERFORGET ▪ Mosaic Will Be Presented to Tuesday’s Children Upon Completion
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – As the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks approach, the New York Giants are asking
their fans to help create a mosaic honoring the memory of those who lost their lives and made us proud a decade ago.
The Giants have partnered with Hashtagart, whose patent pending technology will allow Giants fan to share their memories of
9‐11 and be a part of the creation of the mosaic. To contribute, Big Blue fans must visit Giants.com and click “add me” on the
mosaic page. Fans will then have the option of joining the mosaic via Twitter or Facebook, and their message and profile photo will
be added instantly to help create the mosaic. The profile photos from each fan account will be resized and color corrected to form a
tile of the mosaic and each sent message can be read by rolling your mouse over the respective tile. As fans begin to send in their
messages, the photo behind the mosaic will be revealed tile by tile.
Upon its completion, the team will present the finished artwork to Tuesday’s Children, a non‐profit organization providing
support and services for the children of 9‐11 and others impacted by global terrorism. The Giants have been working closely with
the Tuesday’s Children for the past 10 years.

GIANTS CONNECTIONS Offensive line coach Pat Flaherty was the tight
ends coach for the Redskins in 2000. Defensive line coach Robert Nunn held
the same position with the Redskins in 2003. Tight ends coach Michael
Pope worked with Washington’s tight ends from 1997‐99. Wide receiver
Devin Thomas was a second‐round draft choice of the Redskins in 2008 and
played in 34 games with Washington. Thomas caught 40 passes for 445
yards (12.7‐yard average) and three touchdowns. Thomas also returned 35
kicks for 838 yards.
ROOKIE WATCH The New York Giants welcome 10 rookies to the 53‐
man roster in the 2011 season. Along with the Giants first round pick
defensive back Prince Amukamara, safety Tyler Sash and four linebackers
are looking to make an impact on the defensive side of the ball this season
(LB Mark Herzlich , LB Jacquian Williams, LB Greg Jones, LB Spencer
Paysinger). Rookie Henry Hynoski earned the starting full back job, while
tackle James Brewer, running back Da’Rel Scott, and wide receiver Jerrel
Jernigan look to a depth to the offensive side of the ball.
PROTECTION IS THE KEY Eli Manning was not sacked in seven games in
the 2010 season. The Giants allowed only 16 sacks all season, including four
in the last nine games. That shattered the previous team record in a 16‐
game schedule of 24 set in 2002.
ENDS MEET Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck tied for the team‐lead with
11.5 sacks apiece in 2010, the first time the Giants had two players with at
least that many sacks since 2005, when Umenyiora had 14.5 and Michael
Strahan finished with 11.5. Umenyiora also led the league with 10 forced
fumbles, tying Jason Taylor’s record set in 2006 with Miami. The stat has
been kept since 1994.
LOSSES TO THE SECONDARY The Giants placed CB Terrell Thomas on
injured reserve on Aug 23, one day after tearing his ACL against the Bears.
Thomas was the Giants leader in tackles and interceptions for the past two
years. Another cornerback who tore an ACL in the game against the Bears,
Brian Witherspoon, was waived/injured.
ELI DOES IT AGAIN Eli Manning finished the 2010 season with 4,002
passing yards to become the first Giants quarterback with two 4,000‐yard
seasons. He threw for 4,021 yards in 2009. Kerry Collins (4,073 in 2002) and
Phil Simms (4,044 in 1984) are the only other Giants to pass for more than
4,000 yards in a season.
PRESEASON GAMEBALL
Greg Jones, Jacquian Williams,
Spencer Paysinger, and Mark Herzlich.
The four rookie LBs (Jones and Williams drafted in the sixth
round, Paysinger and Herzlich undrafted) made the Giants 53‐
man roster as a result of their preseason play.

2011 RULE CHANGES
1. Unnecessary Roughness: Three adjustments were made to the unnecessary roughness rule in the interests of player safety and competitive fairness:
Existing unnecessary roughness rules have been standardized and protection for defenseless players has been expanded, including additional safeguards for defenseless receivers, players who receive “blindside” blocks and quarterback, kickers and punters on changes of possession. All unnecessary roughness violations result in a 15‐yard penalty.
Illegal “ launching,” which has been defined as a player leaving both feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into an opponent and delivering blow with any part of the helmet, has been prohibited. “ Our intent with launching was trying to make a uniform rule that applied everywhere on the field to every player,” says NFL Competition Committee Chair and Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay.
Roughing the passer rules have been clarified so hits to the head of a passer by an opponent’s hand, arms, or other parts of the body will not result in fouls unless they are forcible blows.
2. Kickoffs: Due to an increasing number of injuries on kickoffs, several rules have been changed to make those plays safer for both the kicking and receiving teams. The kicking team’s restraining line has been moved to its own 35‐yard line. The kicking team formation for kickoffs has also been adjusted so all players other than the kicker must be lined up no more than five yards behind their restraining line. Illegal formation violations result in a five‐yard penalty.
3. Instant Replay: Two adjustments were made to instant replay procedures in the interest of competitive fairness: The replay official will now initiate reviews of all scoring plays throughout the game from the booth, allowing confirmation of
all scoring plays providing more flexibility to coaches in the use of their challenges. “This proposal is what I would call a modernization of instant replay,” says McKay.
Teams will now be penalized 15 yards for initiating a challenge after a foul prevents the next snap. This prevents a team from challenging the previous play if it commits a pre‐snap foul.
4. Dead Ball Personal Fouls: Dead ball personal fouls by either team at the end of a half will now be enforced on the ensuing kickoff of the third quarter, eliminating the extension of a half after a five‐ or 15‐yard penalty enforcement that includes a dead ball personal foul against the defense. This ensures consistent enforcement for all dead‐ball personal fouls on both the offense and defense in these situations.
5. Playing Field Color: Absent prior approval from NFL, the surface of the entire field must be a league‐approved shade of green, preserving the uniform appearance of all NFL games.

Tom Coughlin NFL Record: 141‐114 (Overall)
NFL Head Coach: 16th year
College: Syracuse
Long regarded as one of the NFL’s premier head
coaches, Tom Coughlin is one of the most successful in the
86‐year history of the New York Football Giants. He
reached the pinnacle of his profession during the 2007
season when he led the Giants to victory in Super Bowl
XLII. The Giants, big underdogs entering the game, scored
two fourth quarter touchdowns to defeat the previously
undefeated New England Patriots 17‐14.
Last year, the Giants were 10‐6, following marks of
8‐8, 12‐4, 10‐6, 8‐8, and 11‐5 the previous five seasons.
Their six‐year streak without a losing record is the Giants’
longest since they had 10 in a row from 1954‐63. In 2008,
Coughlin led the Giants to the NFC East championship and
their twelve victories were their highest total since the
2000 NFC champions won 12 games. The division title was
the Giants’ seventh since the 1970 merger. It was the
eighth time in franchise history and the sixth time since the
1970 merger that the Giants finished a season with at least
12 victories. The Giants advanced to postseason play for
the fourth consecutive season, the first time they
accomplished that feat in their history.
Coughlin also led the Jacksonville Jaguars to four
consecutive postseason berths (1996‐99) and is one of only
three coaches in NFL history to accomplish that feat with
two different teams.
Under Coughlin, the Giants routinely establish
franchise statistical milestones. In 2009, the Giants scored
402 points after scoring 425 in 2008. It is the first time in
franchise history that the Giants scored at least 400 points
in consecutive seasons.
From Sept. 20 to Oct. 4 of 2009, the Giants won
consecutive road games in Dallas, Tampa Bay, and Kansas
City. They were just the eighth team of the 108 that have
played at least three consecutive road games since 1990 to
win every game.
Mike ShanahanNFL Record: 160‐113 (Overall)
NFL Head Coach: 18th year
College: Eastern Illinois
Mike Shanahan became the 28th coach in Redskins
franchise history when he replaced Jim Zorn on January 6,
2010. Mike Shanahan joined the Redskins after spending 14
seasons as head coach of the Denver Broncos (1995‐2008).
Shanahan led the Broncos to back‐to‐back Super Bowl
championships in 1997 and 1998, becoming just the fifth
head coach to accomplish that feat, and is the only coach to
win seven consecutive postseason games in a two‐year
period. During his NFL career, Shanahan has been a part of
teams that have played in nine conference championship
games and six Super Bowls.
In 31 seasons as a pro and college coach, Shanahan’s
teams have participated in postseason or bowl games 22
times. Under Shanahan’s guidance, Denver set then‐NFL
records by posting the most victories in both a two‐year (33,
1997‐98) and three‐year (46, 1996‐98) span. In 17 years (14
with Denver and three as offensive coordinator with the San
Francisco 49ers), Shanahan’s offenses have finished number
one in the NFL four times, second three times, and third
twice.
Shanahan was an assistant with Denver (1984‐87, 1989‐
91) and San Francisco (1992‐94). He returned to Denver as
quarterbacks coach on October 6, 1989, after posting 8‐12
record as the Los Angeles Raiders’ head coach.

PRESEASON GAME 4: GIANTS 18, PATRIOTS 17 SEPTEMBER 1, 2011
By Michael Eisen
FOXBORO, Mass. – The only similarity between the Giants who won
the preseason finale Thursday night to New England and the team that
will open the regular season in Washington on Sept. 11 is the uniforms.
Tom Coughlin did not play any of his 22 starters, as well as some key
reserves, as the Giants overcame a 14‐point deficit at the end of the
third quarter to defeat the Patriots, 18‐17, in Gillette Stadium. The
Giants finished the preseason 2‐2.
The coach would liked to have given his most important players some
work – “Our offensive team could have used a good solid quarter,” he
said – but he did not want them on the field just 72 hours after they
played the majority of the game against the Jets in MetLife Stadium.
That game was postponed 48 hours because of Hurricane Irene. So
stalwarts like Eli Manning, Ahmad Bradshaw, Hakeem Nicks, Chris
Snee, Justin Tuck, Chris Canty, Jonathan Goff, Corey Webster and
Antrel Rolle were part of a 28‐man contingent that either didn’t make
the trip (Lawrence Tynes, Mathias Kiwanuka) or never left the sideline.
Fifty‐seven Giants participated in the pregame warm‐ups. Those who
did not play watched from the Giants bench area in full uniform, sans
shoulder pads.
“Under the circumstances where we just played Monday night and the
first group got in a bunch of plays, I understood the situation,”
Manning said. “We have to rest the body and get focused for
Washington. We rooted on the guys out there, tried to help them and
talked with them on the sideline. Make sure everyone is performing at
their best. This is where the fun starts. The preseason is over and the
offense is healthy and ready to go. It should be a great atmosphere.
They (Washington) are a talented team and we have a lot of
preparation to do.”
The starting offense Thursday included quarterback David Carr, Andre
Brown at running back and Stacy Andrews, Chris White, Kevin Boothe,
Mitch Petrus and Jamon Meredith left to right along the line.
The first‐team defense included Ayanga Okpokowuruk, Gabe Watson,
Jimmy Kennedy and Alex Hall up front, Clint Sintim, Phillip Dillard and
Spencer Paysinger at linebacker and Michael Coe, Brian Williams, Deon
Grant and Tyler Sash in the secondary.
The Giants scored fourth‐quarter touchdowns on a 65‐yard run on a
fake punt by rookie Da’Rel Scott, an 11‐yard fumble return by safety
Derrick Martin (and a two‐point conversion pass from Ryan Perrilloux
to Jerrel Jernigan). Rhys Lloyd kicked a 48‐yard field goal and missed
49‐ and 48‐yard attempts.
“I thought these young guys played hard,” Coughlin said. “They did
make a lot of errors, particularly in the first half, with the obvious
turnovers, but they kept playing. They played hard. We talked about that
at the half and I was glad to see us finish – finish – the game.”
New England scored on a pair of one‐yard touchdown runs by BenJarvus
Green‐Ellis and a Steve Gostkwoski field goal.
The Giants pulled the game out with two big plays in the final quarter.
Trailing 17‐3, the Giants closed their deficit with a little trickery on the
first play of the fourth quarter. They faced a fourth‐and‐two from their
35 when Matt Dodge came on to punt. But Zak DeOssie snapped the ball
to Scott, the upback on the right side. Scott started running right before
cutting back across the field. He reached the end zone without being
touched.
The Giants talked about using the fake during the break between
quarters. Scott made the final call when he lined up for the play.
“It was in the game plan to see how they were playing it,” said Scott, who
rushed for a game‐high 114 yards on only 12 carries. “They had been
playing six up, so we hadn't had a chance to do it. I told coach (special
teams coordinator Tom Quinn), ‘Let’s do it.’ I felt it would definitely work
because of my speed. Before DeOssie snapped it, I knew it would be a big
play.”
Scott knew he was in the clear when he looked up at the stadium’s huge
end zone television screen and saw he was ahead of the field.
Coughlin does not often authorize gadget plays. Asked when he last used
a fake punt, Coughlin said, “1971 or something like that. At RIT, out in the
pasture, with 37 fans watching.”
So why now?
“We practiced it and were ready to use it and it’s always good to get
something on film in preseason,” he said. “You’d have to go back a ways
to find me fake a punt, but I’m glad we did it, obviously.”
The touchdown was the second of the preseason for Scott, the seventh‐
round draft choice from Maryland. But it wasn’t Scott’s longest run of the
summer. He scored on a 97‐yarder in a victory over the Bears on Aug. 22.
Later in the quarter, the Patriots took possession at their own 13
following a Giants punt. But on their first play, Brian Jackson forced
rookie running back Richard Medlin to fumble. Martin scooped up the
ball and made his way into the end zone for a defensive touchdown.
Coughlin elected to go for two and the Giants got the points – and the
lead – when Perrilloux threw a pass to Jernigan.
The game began so poorly for the Giants, Devin Thomas returned three
kickoffs in the first five minutes, due largely to two turnovers on their

first six offensive plays. Those miscues resulted in early 10‐0 deficit.
On the game’s first play, Carr threw to the left side to Domenik Hixon,
who was hit by linebacker Ron Ninkovich and fumbled after a 12‐yard
gain. The ball was recovered by Patrick Chung and returned 18 yards to
the Giants’ one. Coughlin challenged the ruling of a fumble, but referee
Jeff Triplette upheld the call after a lengthy review. Green‐Ellis ran to
the left side and into the end zone on the Patriots’ first snap. Twenty
seconds into the game, the Giants trailed, 7‐0.
Brown ran four times in a row to start the next drive. When Carr
passed on the fifth play, he underthrew Hixon and the ball was picked
off at the New England 49 by Devin McCourty, who returned it 16
yards to the Giants’ 33.
The Patriots picked up 20 yards, but Tom Brady’s third‐down pass to
Deion Branch fell incomplete and Gostkowksi kicked a 31‐yard field
goal that increased the lead to 10‐0.
Later in the quarter, Jernigan’s 42‐yard punt return enabled the Giants
to take possession at the New England 46. Carr quickly found Hixon for
a 21‐yard gain. After Brown gained four yards, Carr was sacked for a
nine‐yard loss by Gary Guyton. Lloyd then put the Giants on the
scoreboard with a 48‐yard field goal.
The Patriots immediately embarked on a five‐play, 90‐yard drive that
ended with Green‐Ellis’ one‐yard touchdown run on the first play of
the second quarter. The big play on the series was Brady’s 64‐yard
completion to Matthew Slater, who caught the ball near the right
sideline and cut back across the center of the field before he was
stopped at the Giants’ four. Green‐Ellis scored two plays later.
Those were the only points of the quarter, though the Giants had two
good scoring chances on which they failed to capitalize.
On the possession after the touchdown, the Giants drove from their
own 16 to the Patriots’ one in 13 plays, the longest Carr’s 20‐yard pass
to Devin Thomas. But on second‐and‐goal from the one, Carr
mishandled a snap from center Kevin Boothe. The ball was recovered
by New England’s Andre Carter.
The Giants again moved the ball after a Patriots punt. But Carr was
sacked for a seven‐yard loss on third down and Lloyd was wide left on
a 49‐yard field goal attempt.
*Sintim suffered his second major injury to his right knee in as many
seasons while tackling Will Yeatman on the first play of the third
quarter.
“It’s bad … a ruptured patella tendon to start with,” Coughlin said. “It is most unfortunate. I mean, you've got to feel badly for a guy who is coming back off a serious knee, works his tail off, really didn’t say a word the whole preseason, did what he had to do, worked on the field, and then to see that happen tonight, it was devastating. I mean, he’ll bounce back; he’ll be back out there. But to have to go through what
he’s got to go through in terms of the rehab, we feel real bad for Clint.” Sintim, near tears, spoke briefly with reporters in the Giants locker room. Last Dec. 13, he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee when the Giants beat the Vikings in Detroit. “I knew – as soon as I hit, I knew,” Sintim said. “It’s unfortunate. I worked really hard to get back and … it’s just unfortunate. But that’s the way football is. I’m going to give myself a couple of days and I’m going to get back on the grind.” *Rookie Jerrel Jernigan dropped a punt (which was nullified by a penalty), but he also ran back five punts for 80 yards, including a 42‐yarder, and caught a 14‐yard pass. Jernigan also suffered a wrist injury of undetermined severity. He has had trouble holding onto the ball, but Coughlin said the third‐round draft choice could still be the opening day punt returner. “He’ll be one of them, for sure,” Coughlin said. “You leave him out there long enough, he learns. And he did some good things, as well as some bad things. He’s going to be in the mix. “He’s young and I’m going to give him a little bit of credit for that, but it’s now time that there can’t be any mistakes like that…so, we’ll just keep working with him. He’s a completely honest young man, never blames anyone except himself, so I like that part about him.” *Carr completed 13 of 21 passes for 116 yards and an interception. “He had some moments when he played very well and he had some moments when he didn’t,” Coughlin said. “I thought he picked us up after a real poor start. (He) threw the ball into coverage, gave you one of those, ‘Oh my, here we go’ type of deals, but then I thought he went and did some really good things. We got the ball on the one‐inch line and I would say the fumble, you are going to give it to the two of them but it was more of the center than it was the quarterback. But he came back and missed a couple to wide open guys, so there was an accuracy issue there and we’re looking for consistency, obviously. But, the one good thing (is) he played himself into a better performance and got a chance to play a lot of snaps.” “I can’t remember the last time I have played that long,” Carr said. “I
think it has been multiple years. It was great to dust some of the rust off
and it was good to get out there and get banged around a little bit and
get your ribs beat up and feel like a football player.”
*Brown played the entire first half and had 21 carries for 68 yards, with a
long run of 11. The 21 carries were his highest total since Aug. 28, 2008,
when he rushed for 101 yards on 21 attempts for North Carolina State at
South Carolina.
*The Giants had eight sacks – seven of them by rookies. Their two sixth‐
round draft choices, linebacker Jacquian Williams (3.0) and safety Tyler
Sash (2.0) combined for five of them. Linebackers Greg Jones and Mark
Herzlich had one apiece. Dwayne Hendricks had the other sack.
“I hustled and the opportunity came, and I just ran with it,” Williams said.
“The quarterback (rookie Ryan Mallett) was not looking and I had good
pressure along with the defensive line. He stepped to my side and I was
just running hard and that is how I got the sack.”

PRESEASON GAME 3: JETS 17, GIANTS 3 AUGUST 29, 2011
By Michael Eisen
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants’ preseason game against the Jets
Monday night serves as a perfect example of why football statistics can
be misleading.
The Giants had 94 more total yards and six more first downs than their
opponents. They had the game’s leading rusher and leading receiver
and their starting quarterback completed two more passes than the
three Jets signal‐callers combined.
Yet the Giants lost, 17‐3, to the Jets in the inaugural MetLife Bowl in
MetLife Stadium because they made too many mistakes and
squandered too many opportunities, including two second‐half drives
inside the Jets’ 20‐yard line that yielded no points.
“We did a lot of good things tonight,” quarterback Eli Manning said. “I
thought me moved the ball well. I thought guys made some plays.
There are just enough things that are keeping us from finishing drives
and putting points on the board. It’s just little things, but those things
can add up. That’s what we have to continue to work on and get better
on. That’s what preseason is for, to learn those. You have new guys in
there, but we can work all of that out.”
They have little time to do that this week. Because Hurricane Irene
forced a 48‐hour postponement of the Jets game, the Giants will have
only two days before putting on their game uniforms again for the
preseason‐finale Thursday in New England.
Manning perhaps best personified the Giants’ evening. He completed
15 of 30 passes for 200 yards, but didn’t throw a touchdown pass and
led just one scoring drive, which ended with Rhys Lloyd’s second‐
quarter field goal. Brandon Jacobs started ahead of Ahmad Bradshaw
and rushed for a game‐high 51 yards, but he was thrown out of the
game for throwing a punch at Muhammad Wilkerson. Had he been in
the game, perhaps he would have scored on the Giants’ ill‐fated fourth
down from the Jets’ one‐yard line in the second quarter. Instead, D.J.
Ware was stopped short.
The special teams allowed a long kickoff return that set up the Jets’
first touchdown. Rookie punt returner Jerrel Jernigan fumbled four
times, though he didn’t lose any of them.
“We did some decent things in the first half,” Coach Tom Coughlin said.
“The two interceptions and the long kickoff return (hurt), but our
defense played solid football. The turnover thing hurt us and the kick
returns hurt us. We mishandled some punts tonight, which we really
haven’t been doing and that’s unfortunate. We got stopped on the
goal line and obviously that was very, very unfortunate.”
The game’s storyline was written in the first two quarters, when the
Giants dominated statistically with advantages of 224‐73 in total yards
and 13‐4 in first downs – but went into locker their room at halftime
trailing, 7‐3.
The Giants’ first possession ended when Manning, under a fierce rush,
threw a pass to Victor Cruz that was intercepted by Jim Leonhard at the
Jets’ 18. In the second quarter, Manning’s pass to Bradshaw was picked
off by David Harris.
“The first one was a blitz and we didn’t get a sight adjustment by either
the tight end or the Z (wide receiver),” Coughlin said. “Unfortunately,
there was no time for him to do anything about it and he threw the ball
and it was picked off. The second one, I don’t think he saw the linebacker
at all.”
Neither interception resulted in a Jets score. Four plays after the second
one, Clint Sintim recovered Mark Sanchez’s fumble at the Giants’ 39‐yard
line. That led to the game’s first score, Lloyd’s 34‐yard field goal with five
minutes remaining in the quarter. Prior to the kick, the Giants drove 45
yards in eight plays, the longest Manning’s short pass to Bradshaw that
saw the running back sidestep Bart Scott’s tackle attempt and run down
the left sideline for a 29‐yard gain to the Jets’ 29.
After a five‐yard penalty for an illegal shift, Manning fired a bullet down
the middle to Hakeem Nicks for a 16‐yard gain to the 18. Nicks led all
receivers with five catches for 71 yards. The Giants got as far as the 13
before Bradshaw lost three yards and Manning’s pass to Travis Beckum
fell incomplete. Lloyd then came on to kick the field goal.
On the ensuing kickoff, Antonio Cromartie mishandled and then picked
up the ball and raced through the Giants’ coverage team for 68 yards
before Lloyd managed to push him out of bounds at the 35‐yard line. On
the next five plays, the Jets gained, in order, six, three, zero, one and
eight yards leading to the two‐minute warning. When play resumed,
Sanchez threw to the center of the end zone for Holmes, who got a step
ahead of cornerback Corey Webster for the touchdown that gave the Jets
a 7‐3 halftime lead.
“They did get field position on their first score,” middle linebacker
Jonathan Goff said. “But our job is to stop them and get the ball back and
not allow any points. Even though it is preseason you want to go out
there and put your best foot forward. We had some good plays and some
bad plays but you still want to go out there and be as constructive as
possible.”
“I was happy with the way the defense played, to be honest with you,”
Coughlin said. “Again, the field position was ours pretty much all of the
first quarter. I’ll bet we had field position far away in the first quarter;
didn’t have anything to show for it. We got down there, and then ran out
of gas, made a play here or there, missed a throw, so that hurt.”
35 Timex Performance Center • 1925 Giants Drive • East Rutherford, NJ • 07073 (201) 935-8111 • Giants.com
Their first foray saw them move from their own 15 all the way to the
Jets’ one‐yard line. But on fourth‐and‐goal from the one, D.J. Ware
tried to dive over the right side of the line but was stonewalled by
Brodney Poole and Josh Mauga.
“I don’t know if I should have left my feet or not,” Ware said. “I could
have sworn I was going to get in there, but it closed up at the end. I
tried to jump over people, but I didn’t get up high enough. You’d rather
stay on the ground and slice though, but it looked so clogged up and I
thought I could get over the top.”
On the drive, Jacobs ran for 25 yards and the Giants picked up 29 more
when Manning threw a 14‐yard pass to Nicks and Emanuel Cook was
penalized 15 yards for grabbing the receiver’s facemask.
Two plays later, Manning’s pass to Mario Manningham gave the Giants
a first‐and‐goal at the seven. Cruz’s five‐yard reception on third down
put the ball on the one, but Ware was unable to punch the ball in on
fourth down.
“It’s frustrating to move the ball like that and not score,” guard David
Diehl said. “We had so many good things going on – first downs and
running the ball well – to not put the ball in the end zone is
disappointing.”
The defense forced the Jets to go three‐and‐out and punt from the
seven‐yard line. The Giants took possession at their own 48 and with
David Carr at quarterback. Carr quickly hit Cruz for nine yards and got
another 15‐yard boost from the Jets when Donald Strickland was
penalized for unnecessary roughness – on Andre Brown’s two‐yard run.
The Giants had a second‐and‐eight at the 13. But Brown was stopped for
no gain before Carr was sacked by quick‐blitzing linebacker Nick Bellore
for an 11‐yard loss to the 24.
Lloyd attempted a field goal that could have pulled the Giants to within a
single point, but the ball was blocked by Jarron Gilbert, and another
opportunity was squandered.
When the reserves were competing in the fourth quarter, the Jets scored
on Bilal Powell’s one‐yard run and Nick Folk’s 33‐yard field goal.
“We didn’t play very well with our twos at all,” Coughlin said. “I didn’t
think they played well at all and they are getting as many reps as
everybody else. There has to be some improvement there no doubt. I
thought we had some real chances and didn’t finish anything obviously
offensively but we have some work to do no doubt. There were some
positives in the first half and a lot of yards but no points.”
And that was pretty much the story of the night

NOTES, ANCEDOTES, AND STATISTICS By Michael Eisen
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Aaron Ross is five inches shorter than Plaxico
Burress, but the Giants’ cornerback stood tall against his former
teammate Monday night.
Ross, the Giants’ new starting right cornerback, helped limit Burress to
zero receptions in the Giants’ 17‐3 preseason loss to the Jets in MetLife
Stadium.
“Myself and Corey (Webster, the other starting corner) are really good
friends with Plaxico,” Ross said, “but when we get on the field it’s time
to go to business.”
Mark Sanchez threw two passes to Burress in the first quarter and one
each in the second and third quarters. But the Giants’ defense held
Burress, who played for the team from 2005‐08, without a reception.
“Well, that’s a good thing, especially for us,” defensive end Justin Tuck
said. “You know Plaxico, he’s going to have a big year for them and I’m
just glad to have our corners go up and get some work against a guy
like that. (He’s a) 6‐5 guy, you don’t get a lot of work in practice against
a guy like that and they were up for the challenge.”
“He didn’t get too many balls thrown his way this time, but I am pretty
sure that as the season goes on he and Sanchez will get on the same
page and start to make plays together,” Ross said. “I mean, he’s just a
great player. I know he still has it in him, he showed it in his first
preseason game. Our coaches did a great job in calling the right
defense for us to keep the ball out of his hands.”
*Safety Antrel Rolle, who also had a hand in Burress going without a
catch, played in the slot in the nickel defense, a position he assumed
when Terrell Thomas suffered a season‐ending knee injury last week.
“It’s going to take a little while to get comfortable at it,” Rolle said.
“Nickel is nothing new to my game. I’ve been playing it pretty much my
entire career. Just to get back in the groove and the feel of things and
understand my assignments and adjustments and make sure I’m on
the same page as my team. I’ll be good.”
*Eli Manning threw his first two interceptions of the preseason. He has
yet to throw a touchdown pass, though that is hardly causing him to
lose sleep.
“No one ever counts how many touchdown passes you’ve thrown in
preseason,” Manning said. “It’s one of those where you’re on limited
scouting time and you’re out there running plays. We had some
opportunities, there were some big plays out there ‐ a fade to Mario
(Manningham), a go‐route to Mario that we missed on. We just have to
get sharp on those things and the touchdowns will come.”
Coach Tom Coughlin was asked if he is concerned about Manning’s play.
“I’m not concerned,” Coughlin said. “Would I have liked to have done
better? Yeah. I’d like to think that we would have put some points on the
board. Until tonight, he’s been very good with the ball; very conservative
with the ball.”
*Justin Tuck left the game in the third quarter with what was called a
stinger, then downplayed the injury after the game.
“(Vice President of Medical Services) Ronnie Barnes didn’t want me to
break another fingernail, so he pulled me out,” Tuck said.
Tuck also said he was “good to go.”
*Linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka suffered a groin injury in the first quarter
and did not return. He was replaced on the strong side by Clint Sintim,
who later recovered a Mark Sanchez fumble. Sintim tied for the team
high with six tackles (three solo).
*Coughlin lost two replay challenges.
The first was in the opening quarter. On fourth‐and‐one from the Jets’
28, Shonn Green ran over right guard for a short gain. The Giants thought
they had stopped Green short of the first down, but the officials ruled the
play a two‐yard gain. Coughlin challenged the spot of the ball, but after
review, referee Walt Coleman upheld the call on the field and the Jets
had a first down at the 30. They punted four plays later.
In the fourth quarter, Jets quarterback Greg McElroy ran three yards
around right end and fumbled. The ball was recovered by running back
Joe McKnight, who gained four more yards. Coughlin challenged the
loose ball recovery ruling, but Coleman again upheld the original call. The
Jets ended that drive with Nick Folk’s 33‐yard field goal.
*The Giants’ game captains were Rolle, Dave Tollefson and Chris Snee.
*The following Giants did not play due to injury: kicker Lawrence Tynes
(quad), quarterback Sage Rosenfels (illness/back), cornerback Prince
Amukamara (foot), defensive end Osi Umenyiora (knee), safety Brian
Jackson (hip) and wide receiver Duke Calhoun (hamstring).
*The Giants now trail in the preseason series, 23‐19‐1. The two teams
will meet again in the regular season on Dec. 24. The Giants will be the
visiting team. They lead the regular season series, 7‐4.
*Due to logistical complications presented by the schedule change in the
aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the Giants today announced that they have
canceled their annual Kickoff Luncheon.
The luncheon was scheduled to be held Wednesday in MetLife Stadium.

NOTES, ANCEDOTES, AND STATISTICS Because of the hurricane, the Giants will play games both Monday and
Thursday this week, severely limiting their practice time in the final
week of the preseason. In addition, they travel to New England on
Wednesday.
The Giants will schedule an event in the future to benefit the
Touchdown Fund at Hackensack University Medical Center.

PRESEASON GAME 2: GIANTS 41, BEARS 13
AUGUST 22, 2011 By Michael Eisen
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – If Tom Coughlin handed out game balls for
preseason victories, he’d need to place a special order to award
everyone who made big plays or significant contributions in the Giants’
41‐13 preseason demolition of the Chicago Bears Monday night in New
Meadowlands Stadium.
In no special order, the Giants got touchdown runs from Brandon
Jacobs, D.J. Ware and rookie Da’Rel Scott (a 97‐yarder that would have
been the longest in franchise history had it occurred in the regular
season); terrific catches by Domenik Hixon for a touchdown and Victor
Cruz on a fourth down to keep a scoring drive alive; two touchdown
passes by David Carr; a blocked punt by rookie linebacker Greg Jones
that set up a touchdown; Devin Thomas returning three kickoffs for a
46.0‐yard average, including a 73‐yarder; two goal line stands that
helped keep the Bears out of the end zone until 24 seconds remained;
an interception by rookie linebacker Mark Herzlich; and no sacks
allowed on 27 pass attempts.
Oh, we failed to mention that Jacobs averaged 8.0 yards a carry, tight
end Daniel Coats also caught a touchdown pass (he has none in 57
career regular season games), new kicker Rhys Lloyd kicked two field
goals and five extra points, rookie linebacker Spencer Paysinger led the
team with seven tackles (four solo) and cornerback Michael Coe had a
team‐high six unassisted stops).
It would have been a near‐perfect night had starting cornerback Terrell
Thomas not torn a knee ligament late in the first half. But it was
certainly a more energetic – and entertaining – performance than their
opening loss in Carolina.
“We played better and we improved tonight,” Coach Tom Coughlin
said. “We had a lot of big plays in the game. I was glad to see so many
guys make strong contributions.”
Perhaps more important than the gaudy numbers was the
performance of the starting units. The first‐team offense played five
series, gained 132 yards and scored 13 points. Eli Manning completed
eight of 16 passes for 78 yards.
“I definitely think there was improvement, which was a goal coming in,
to sustain a couple of drives and put some points on the board,” guard
Chris Snee said. “We did that somewhat. Obviously, we like to start the
game faster, which is an area I’m sure we’ll address next week.
Defensively, the Giants’ starters held the Bears to four punts, two field
goals and a missed field goal attempt on seven first‐half possessions.
“We were effective on both sides,” safety Antrel Rolle said. “We came
out and played well as a team. We have a lot of things to work on, but
it’s the second preseason game and that’s to be expected. Special teams
did a good job and the offense did a good job as well as the defense.”
The victory improved the Giants to 1‐1 this preseason. They host the Jets
on Saturday.
Cruz made the Giants’ first big play of the night late in the first quarter.
On fourth‐and‐four from the Chicago 32, he made a leaping catch of a
Manning pass over cornerback D.J. Moore to advance the ball to the
Chicago 11‐yard line. But the drive stalled and Lloyd came on to kick his
first field goal in a Giants uniform.
The Giants took control of the game by outscoring Chicago in the second
quarter, 17‐3. Jacobs gave the Giants the lead for good on the first play of
the quarter when he scored on an 18‐yard run. On first down, Jacobs
took a handoff from Manning and made a nifty move generally used by
smaller backs when he juked his way past safety Major Wright. The score
capped a short 31‐yard drive that was set up by Thomas’ 73‐yard kickoff
return – 31 yards longer than the Giants’ best return in 2010.
After the defense forced Chicago to go three‐and‐out, the Giants bled
4:29 of the clock on a 32‐yard drive that ended with Lloyd’s 37‐yard field
goal, which extended the Giants’ lead to 13‐3. The longest play on the
series was Manning’s 20‐yard pass to Mario Manningham.
“Those guys are all working,” Manning said of his receivers. “They’re all
great competitors. It’s fun to be in practice with them. They want to do
the right things, they want to learn, they’re all smart, they get things. So
we’re coaching them up, but they’re making plays and doing a good job.”
Chicago countered with Robbie Gould’s second field goal, a 42‐yarder
that was set up by Jay Cutler’s deep pass to the right to wide receiver Earl
Bennett.
Carr relieved Manning and on his second series, threw a six‐yard
touchdown pass to Hixon. But a big assist goes to Jones, who ran through
a huge hole in the Bears’ protection and blocked Spencer Lanning’s punt.
The ball was recovered and then fumbled by Jones. Jacquain Williams
picked it up and advanced it to the Chicago one‐yard line. But because
the play occurred inside the final two minutes of the half, it was returned
to the spot of the fumble, which was the six.
“The whole time I was struggling blocking my man and I told coach that
he was getting out to cover the punts really fast,” Jones said. “I said,
‘Coach, I can get in there if you let me blitz. If you let me go get it.’ I said
it like I was going to go get him. I just ran in there and Lord willing, I got in
there and I blocked it. I’ve just got to scoop it and score. I missed my
opportunity, but I’m going to try to get another one back.”

PRESEASON GAME 2: GIANTS 41, BEARS 13
NOTES, ANCEDOTES, AND STATISTICS By Michael Eisen
On second down, Carr lofted a fade pass to the right side for Hixon,
who leaped higher than cornerback Corey Graham to secure the ball
for the five‐yard touchdown that gave the Giants a 20‐6 lead with 35
seconds left in the half.
“Carr did an awesome job,” Hixon said. “He checked to the play. He got
us out of a bad play and got us into a good one. It was a great ball. We
practiced that. We missed a couple in practice but we hit it in the game
tonight.”
The onslaught continued in the third quarter, thanks in part to
Coughlin’s second successful replay challenge of the game. The Giants
had a second‐and‐five from the Chicago seven when Ware ran for six
yards before losing the ball, which was recovered by linebacker Chris
Johnson at the one. Coughlin challenged the ruling, saying Ware was
down before he fumbled. After review, referee Ron Winter agreed and
the call was reversed. The Giants got a first down at the one and Ware
scored on the next play by using a second effort to force the ball over
the goal line.
The Giants still led, 27‐6, when the Bears had an opportunity to stay in
the game with a first‐and‐goal at the eight. Marion Barber gained six
yards on second down and another yard on the next snap, setting up
and four‐and‐goal. Barber ran off right tackle but was stopped by Deon
Grant and Ayanga Okpokowuruk for no gain.
Early in the fourth quarter, Carr’s 17‐yard scramble helped set up his
17‐yard touchdown pass to Coats, which increased the Giants’ lead to
34‐6. The Bears again traveled deep into Giants territory, reaching the
six‐yard line on a second‐and‐four. But again the Giants defense stood
tall and on fourth down, Herzlich, the free agent from Boston College,
picked off Caleb Hanie’s pass down the middle for Dane Sanzenbacher
“It was a zone coverage,” said Herzlich, who was holding the ball in the
locker room after the game. “I tried to knock him off his route a little
bit. I saw the quarterback rise up with the ball. He threw it above me. I
believe I tipped it and brought it down and caught it. I was about to go
down and I didn’t feel anyone tackle me, so I tried to run a little bit.”
The takeaway gave the Giants the ball at the Chicago five. An illegal
formation penalty pushed the Giants back two yards. It didn’t matter
to Scott, the seventh‐round draft choice from Maryland. He took a
handoff from Ryan Perrilloux, slipped and almost fell to the ground
before regaining his balance and scampering through the defense the
length of the field for an improbable 97‐yard score.
“My line just opened it up for me, it was a 35 zone,” Scott said. “I tried
to bounce it out and the linebackers kept flowing. I just followed
Charles Scott and I think it was (James) Brewer and I cut off of them and
it just opened up for me. I was thinking just don’t get caught, just score.
“I’m very excited about it. It showed that I can break long runs.
Scott was one of many Giants who showed Monday night what they can
do for the team.
*Coughlin won two replay challenges. The first, in the opening quarter,
negated a Chicago 16‐yard completion and a first down. The second, in
the third quarter, kept alive a Giants touchdown drive.
On third‐and‐10 from the Bears’ 17, Jay Cutler threw for an apparent 16‐
yard gain to Roy Williams. Replays showed he never had possession of
the ball before hitting the ground. Coughlin challenged and after review,
referee Ron Winter reversed the call on the field, forcing Chicago to punt.
In the third quarter, the Giants had a second‐and‐five from the Chicago
seven. Ware ran for six yards before losing the ball, which was recovered
by linebacker Chris Johnson at the one. But Coughlin challenged the
ruling, saying Ware was down before he fumbled. After review, Winter
agreed and the call was reversed. The Giants got a first down at the one
and Ware scored on the next play.
*The Giants game captains were David Diehl and Chris Canty.
*The following Giants did not play vs. Chicago: kicker Lawrence Tynes
(quad), quarterback Sage Rosenfels (illness/back), defensive end Osi
Umenyiora (knee), cornerback Prince Amukamara (foot), wide receiver
Darius Reynaud (hamstring) and safety Brian Jackson (hip).
*In addition to Thomas’s ACL injury, CB Brian Witherspoon (sprained
knee) and DE Alex Hall (groin) also left the game due to injury.

PRESEASON GAME 1: PANTHERS 20, GIANTS 10 AUGUST 13, 2011
By Michael Eisen
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Giants’ performance in the opening preseason
game elicited a midseason reaction from Tom Coughlin. The head coach
didn’t care that he’d conducted only 11 practices since the end of last
season, his starters played about a quarter and much of the second
half featured players who likely won’t be wearing a Giants uniform a
month from now. No, for Coughlin the evening’s salient truth was a 20‐
10 defeat to the Carolina Panthers in Bank of America Stadium.
Meaningless preseason game? Not to Coughlin.
“It’s a disappointing loss,” Coughlin said. “Anytime you lose it’s
disappointing … we would have liked to have seen everybody play
better, but it didn’t happen.” Although the players said it was great to
play a game after the long, locked‐out offseason, they seemed to lack a
spark for much of the evening. The Giants did not score an offensive
touchdown, gave up critical big plays on defense and missed three field
goal attempts (one a 56‐yarder and the last a 44‐yard try that was
blocked and left Lawrence Tynes with a thigh contusion).
“We just didn’t have a lot of energy out there,” said Ahmad Bradshaw,
who rushed for 21 yards on five carries. “I can see where (Coughlin) is
coming from. Then again, it is the first game.”
“He just wants to get the best out of us,” cornerback Corey Webster
said. “We could have been a little more crisp, could have paid a little
more attention to detail. This week, we have to watch the tape, learn
from it and get better.”
The Giants’ lone touchdown was scored by linebacker Michael Boley,
who returned an interception 56 yards for a touchdown on the game’s
first series. The irony is that the Giants led the NFL with 39 takeaways
in 2010, but were one of just four teams not to score a defensive
touchdown. Tynes’ 37‐yard field goal late in the second quarter was
the only other score for the Giants, who were shutout in the second
half.
Carolina scored on a pair of touchdown passes – an 18‐yarder from
Jimmy Clausen to Greg Olsen in the first quarter and a 35‐yarder from
Derek Anderson to Kealoha Pilares in the fourth – and two Olindo Mare
field goals. Including Boley’s touchdown, the starting defense played
four series in the first quarter and surrendered 90 yards, four first
downs and a touchdown on an 18‐yard pass from Clausen to Olsen.
The first unit prevented Carolina from converting any of its four third
down opportunities in the quarter. The Eli Manning‐led starting
offense played the first five series for a total of 18 plays. The unit
gained 79 yards, but its possessions ended with Tynes’ slightly short
56‐yard try and four punts.
“We didn't get off to a great start,” said Manning, who completed four
of nine passes for 36 yards. “We didn't make any critical mistakes, didn't
turn the ball over, so those are positives. But we were never able to get
into a great rhythm. We missed a few opportunities and made a couple
mental mistakes. Those are the things that kept us from keeping drives
alive.”
The Giants do have plenty of positives to take into their next week of
practice (they don’t play again until Aug. 22 at home against Chicago).
Jason Pierre‐Paul had two sacks. Domenik Hixon, in his first game action
since the end of the 2009 season, had team‐high totals of four receptions
for 49 yards. Backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels completed 13 of 19
passes, including three for 23 yards to Devin Thomas. Punters Matt
Dodge and Steve Weatherford had combined averages of 48.1 yards
(gross) and 39.4 yards (net).
The Giants started well. On the fourth play from scrimmage, Boley, the
weakside linebacker, picked off a Clausen pass intended for DeAngelo
Williams and was well ahead of the field on his entire 56‐yard sprint to
the end zone. The Giants led, 7‐0, just 2:03 into the game and before
their offense had taken a snap.
“I really just dropped into zone coverage,” Boley said. “I saw the whole
thing. The quarterback really zoned in on the running back. The ball was
thrown and the running back hadn't turned around yet. He threw it in my
zone, he really threw it right to me. It was a great way to start the
preseason for the defense by putting some points on the board.”
But instead of using Boley’s big play to generate momentum, the Giants
fizzled. They did force the Panthers to go three‐and‐out on the ensuing
possession – thanks in part to Pierre‐Paul’s nine‐yard sack on third down
– but their first offensive series ended when Tynes’ long field attempt fell
short.
The Panthers needed only three plays and 58 seconds to travel 54 yards.
Clausen connected with Williams for 16 yards, Williams ran for 20 up the
middle and Olsen scored when he caught the ball in the end zone despite
safety Tyler Sash being in very close proximity. That evened the score at
7‐7 with 7:42 remaining in the first quarter. The Giants never held the
ball for more than four plays on any of their next four series.
“We had the interception for the score,” Coughlin said. “It’s the same old
thing – you can make something very good happen for our team by
scoring again right there and we didn’t do it. It’s disappointing.”
“We got a big interception return from Boley and that should have gotten
us going in all three phases of the game,” Bradshaw said. “We just didn’t
put it together. It was a very enthusiastic play and it should have had
everybody ready to go after that. It just didn’t happen.”
Two field goals by Mare and one by Tynes left the Giants with a 13‐10
42 Timex Performance Center • 1925 Giants Drive • East Rutherford, NJ • 07073 (201) 935-8111 • Giants.com
halftime deficit. The only score in the second half was Anderson’s
touchdown pass to Pilares with
7:15 remaining in the game, a time when third‐stringers from both
sides were on the field.
A more significant play might have occurred four minutes earlier, when
Tynes’ 44‐yard try to tie the game was blocked by Sean Ware, whose
helmet then collided with the kicker’s leg.
“Hopefully, Lawrence will be – they say it’s a thigh contusion and I’m
hoping that’s basically what it is,” Coughlin said. “Hopefully he gets over
that as fast as he possibly can and gets back out there.”
In the meantime, the Giants have both the room and the time to get
better. “We’ll improve from this,” Coughlin said. “We’ll definitely
improve from this. There are some people who are upset with the way
they played and how it looks once they look at the tape. There’s a lot of
pride in that room.” They can put it to good use beginning Monday at
practice.

PRESEASON GAME 1: CAROLINA 20, GIANTS 10
NOTES, ANCEDOTES, AND STATISTICS By Michael Eisen
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – So this is what the Giants saw in Jason Pierre‐Paul
when they drafted the defensive end from South Florida on the first
round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
It’s safe to say Jimmy Clausen wishes the Giants had made a different
choice. The Carolina quarterback was sacked twice by Pierre‐Paul in the
first quarter of the Panthers’ 20‐10 victory over the Giants in a preseason
game Saturday night in Bank of America Stadium. Pierre‐Paul, who
started at right end, had four tackles (three solo) in his short stint on the
field.
“I thought I played pretty good,” Pierre‐Paul said. “I knew what I was
supposed to do and I was just out there executing. I came out, and I
wasn't nervous. I knew the play calls, and I caught on very well. I just felt
good. It felt very good. I knew what I was doing. (The first real contact)
felt real good. Just to see where our conditioning was. Probably need to
work on a little more running.”
Pierre‐Paul’s performance certainly was one of the few positives Coach
Tom Coughlin found in his initial evaluation of the game.
“Jason did a heck of a job,” Coughlin said. “He was very physical. He had
the two sacks and just missed on another one. (He) was a penetrator, he
was a force. He really enjoyed playing and I thought he gave us a real
spark.”
As a rookie, Pierre‐Paul played in all 16 games as a reserve and on special
teams and finished the season with 4.5 sacks, the most by a Giants
rookie since Cornelius Griffin had 5.0 in 2000. He had two sacks vs.
Jacksonville on Nov. 28 and two against Washington the following week
to become the first rookie in Giants history with at least two sacks in
consecutive games.
Those are impressive achievements for a player with just one year of
major college football experience after stops at two junior colleges.
Pierre‐Paul’s first NFL season was one of intense learning of both the
Giants’ defense and what is required to succeed in the NFL.
“It was a major thing for him,” Coughlin said, “because of the newness of
the language, the fact that he hadn’t had a great deal of experience – it
was all new to him last year.”
Pierre‐Paul has worked with the first team in training camp. On Monday,
Osi Umenyiora, the two‐time Pro Bowler who started every game at right
end last season, will reportedly practice for the first time. If so, what
does that mean for Pierre‐Paul?
“I don’t know,” he said. “It’s up to the coaches. I’m going out there and
(doing) whatever the coaches want. If they want me to be on the second
team, I’m going to do it for the team.
“I’d love for Osi to come back. That’s more defensive line pressure.”
*Coughlin said the new‐look offensive line, with center David Baas, has
work to do to achieve the communication and consistency the coach
craves.
“We had some errors, there isn’t any doubt,” Coughlin said. “One play we
checked to a draw and no one blocked the inside backer. We’re fighting our
way through some things in terms of communication. We have a new
center in there and he has a way to go.”
The linemen are convinced they’ll have the kinks eliminated in a short time.
“In the first one, you really want to communicate,” guard David Diehl said.
“You want to get on the same page. It's good to get some short yardage
situations. You want to have scoring drives and get some first downs.
Unfortunately, we didn't do that (Saturday). We've got a lot to learn, but
we've got some good film now to study to really see the things we need to
improve on going into next week.”
*Although the result was disappointing, many of the players were thrilled
just to be in uniform and playing a game. They missed the on‐field work
and interaction with their teammates in the spring because of the lockout.
“It felt great to be back out there,” said linebacker Michael Boley, who
scored the Giants’ lone touchdown on an early interception return. “It's
been a long offseason. We've been beating up on ourselves for two weeks,
so it was actually good to go out and hit someone else and experience the
live action.”
“It was good to get back out here and get into a game situation,” Diehl said.
“We've been butting heads with our own team for the last couple weeks.
Even though you practice hard, and we've had some great practices, you
can't ever simulate the speed of the game. It's great to get out here and get
the pads hitting, getting some plays in. It's great to get the first game out of
the way.”
*The Giants’ starting lineups:

Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, TE Jake Ballard, LT Will Beatty, LG
