For so many of us the annus novus represents a clean slate — a fresh opportunity to improve ourselves and to enrich our lives. But while millions of people take part in the annual resolution ritual, it doesn’t take long for these solemn pledges to fall by the wayside. Whatever the nature of your goals, it’s never that easy to achieve them in reality. One reason that we abandon our resolutions so easily is that, in this world of instant gratifica- tion, we don’t reap results as quickly as we want. Resolutions such as los- ing weight, getting fit and getting a new job do not happen over night — no matter how much we would like them to. Another reason is that many people find that they actually become unhappier as a result of giving something up or changing part of their lives. Working harder, giving up smoking, cutting out cake or drinking less alco- hol may be better for you in the long run — but many people soon get fed up with their new regime of abstention. But help is at hand — and here are a few tips to help you stick to your New Year’s resolutions, whatev- er they may be. First of all, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Making resolutions on New Year’s Eve may seem a great idea at the time but they will be hard promises to keep. The thing to do is to aim to make little changes to your lifestyle throughout the coming year, and to build on them as time pro- gresses. Give yourself a realistic date by which to have achieved your main resolu- tion. It can be helpful to write down your resolution and put it on display some- where you will see it every day to remind you of your goal. Ask someone you know to encourage you and then, if you feel like quitting, you can call on them for sup- port. Better still, find someone who is trying to accomplish the same thing as you and support one other. Write down a list of bene- fits which you’ll reap once you achieve your goal and look at it regularly to remind yourself why you are doing it. Finally, plan a reward for yourself once you accom- plish your resolution, even if it just a small achieve- ment as part of a larger goal. change your wayof life foreverOld habits die hard: Can you commit to quitting in 2009?

A burning desire to quit smoking?RECORD numbers ofsmokers are predictedto quit in January 2009,according to an onlinestore supplying nico-tine patches and gum.

Simon Driscoll from StopSmoking Shop said: “Wehave seen an unprecedent-ed interest in our website inthe run up to the New Year. We’ve seen record numbersof people using our onlinetools to work out how muchtime and money they usesmoking cigarettes – as wellas finding out more aboutthe impact their habit ishaving on their health.

“It takes just a minute onStop Smoking Shop to cal-culate the details of howmuch your personal smok-ing habit costs you, howmuch time it takes up, andthe real impact on yourhealth.

“Many smokers are alsocatching on to the fact thatlike the banks, the tobaccoindustry is lining its pocketsat their expense – and no-one wants to be taken for amug.”

Mr Driscoll thinks the cur-rent interest in stop smok-ing products is attributableto two things – the tradi-tional New Year’s resolu-tions and the current eco-nomic situation.

He said: “As usual we areseeing a seasonal uplift inpeople wanting to quit inearly January when they

are looking for a freshstart. But we also believeinterest in quitting hasbeen boosted by the UKrecession, which hasmeant people are watch-ing every penny theyspend.

“One of our key mes-sages to smokers thinkingabout stopping is thatthey will save an awful lotof money. Smoking is sim-ply money going up insmoke – a 20-a-day habitis equivalent to buying adecent MP3 player eachmonth and setting fire toit.

“Once people get a han-

dle on the cost of theirsmoking, they start to seespending a few pounds onquitting as an invest-ment.”

The public health chari-ty ASH has the followingtips for smokers wishing tostub out the habit: Make a resolution to

quit on or before NoSmoking Day (March 8).Setting a date to quit helpsin mental preparation. Telephone the profes-

sionals: Your chances ofsucceeding are greatlyimproved with qualifiedhelp. Know what to expect:

Many people find the firstfew days very difficult.Nicotine withdrawal maymake you restless, irrita-ble, frustrated and sleep-less. These feelings willpass and you will soonstart to feel the benefits ofstopping. Deal with nicotine

withdrawal: Options incl -ude the use of nicotinereplacement therapiessuch as gums and patchesor prescribed medication.Make an appointmentwith your doctor to discussthe treatment that willwork best for you.

Advertiser’s Announcement

Quit and get fit –3 services one result!!

IF YOU’D LOVE TO GIVE UP SMOKINGWITHOUT GAINING WEIGHT YOU CAN……….

That’s the message that the Barnsley NHS Stop SmokingService is keen to get to everyone and they havelaunched a unique and totally different approach toquitting.

Barnsley has a significantly higher number ofsmokers than the UK average which leads to shortenedlife expectancy and early deaths from heart disease andcancer which could all sound like doom and gloom butthe service really wants to help people make positiveand committed decisions to stop smoking.

The service has helped over 2,200 people to stop overthe last year and it’s a fact that people are 4 times morelikely to quit with help from the stop smoking service

The service opened its new drop in premises on

Eldon Street in February last year and from there co-ordinate a Barnsley-wide programme.

The service offers confidential 1 to 1 support with allsorts of tips and advice on how to quit for good.

John Auty from Birdwell says

“Best service I’ve ever used. There’s always someoneto talk to and I’ve saved a fortune.”

“I went to my local sessions and they really helped. The sense of achievement you get when you knowyou’ve done it is fantastic. People said I couldn’t do itand I did.”

Sadie, Darfield

If you visit during January the service is offering 4 free

weekly vouchers for nicotine replacement when youregister and attend weekly sessions PLUS free SlimmingWorld vouchers up to 12 weeks or Premier Leisure gymmembership for every week you stay smoke free.

So with the support of the UK’s largest and mostsuccessful slimming organisation with over 35 groupsin Barnsley at times to suit everyone plus the chance tomake use of the fantastic gym facilities at PremierLeisure sites how can you fail!!!

Make you sure you put the QuitShop on your list thenext time you are in town and drop in to take advantageof these great offers and bag yourself a health bargain, alonger healthier life and save yourself pounds into thedeal!!!!

IF YOU’VE over-indulged atChristmas, you’re probablykeen to shake off those extrapounds.

The best way to do this, according toThe Food Standards Agency, is to eata balanced diet and get physicallyactive.

The key to a healthy diet is to eat avariety of foods. Fruit and veg shouldmake up a third of the food you eat.

Aim to eat at least five portions everyday, and these can be tinned, frozen, dried, cooked or raw, and a glass offruit juice can also make up one ofyour portions each day.

As a guide, a portion means oneapple or banana, or two smaller fruitsuch as plums, or two to three table-spoonfuls of frozen vegetables.

Starchy foods should also make upabout a third of your diet.

These include bread, breakfast cere-als, pasta, rice, potatoes, beans andlentils.

You might think that starchy foodsare particularly fattening – but thisisn’t true, although they can becomefattening if they’re cooked or servedwith added fat.

It’s the margarine or butter wespread on bread, the cream or cheesesauce we add to pasta or the oil we use

for frying that makes them fattening. And there’s no escaping the fact

that, now Christmas is over, youshould keep cakes, biscuits, crisps, pas-tries and ice cream to a minimum.

Physical activity is a good way ofusing up extra calories, and helps usto maintain our body weight.

It’s a good idea to get active eachday, but you don’t need to join a gymif you don’t want to.

Other suggestions include going fora walk after lunch, take the stairsinstead of the lift, walk (or even jog)some of your shorter journeys, orcatch the bus one or two stops furtherdown the road.

If you have a medical condition youshould be careful when taking exer-cise and always consult your GP beforestarting a new exercise programme orincreasing your levels of activity.
