The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion AFC name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Barkston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982/83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001/02 & 2003/04.

At the start of 2004/05, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident commit-tee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Nov 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008/09, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th.

In 2009/10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish in 2011/12 and 6th in 2012/13.

In the 2013/14 season Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of the season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In 2014/2015 the Brewers lead the NCEL Premier for most of the season, but a poor run of games in March led to them finally finishing in third.

An excellent run in the FA Vase saw them make history by making it through to the Quarter Final of the FA Vase where they drew a record breaking crowd of 1,307, but were narrowly beaten by Highworth Town.

The Brewers also broke many other records throughout the season – taking more than 200 fans away to Armthorpe Welfare on a cold Tuesday night where they went on to win 10-0.

At the end of the season, the club opted not to renew their contract with manager Paul Marshall, and two weeks later former Harrogate Railway boss Billy Miller was unveiled as the club’s new manager.

TAFC Directors’ Notes

Welcome to today’s NCEL Premier match against Worksop Town. It’s now more than two months since Tadcaster Albion played a home game, so we’re delighted to get back to hosting proceedings; even if it is at Selby Town! Our games against Worksop Town are always close affairs, so we’re very much looking forward to a competitive game. A big welcome to everyone who has made the long trip up from Nottinghamshire.

Top of the table Worksop have started the season very strongly and are once again one of our main rivals for promotion. The Tigers are unbeaten in six games and their away form is extremely impressive – having won nine, drawn two and lost only one this season. The three points up for grabs today are crucial for both sides’ promotion bid and we will be doing all we can to make sure we come away on top.

It’s been a difficult few weeks for the people of Tadcaster. The i2i Stadium was badly hit by the Boxing Day floods and estimates suggest that around £300,000 worth of damage has been caused to the site. It’s been a miserable time for everyone involved with the club, so we can’t even imagine what it must have been like to deal with the prospect of a flooded home. We hope that anyone who has been personally affected by the floods is starting to get back on their feet and receiving all the help and support they need.

Luckily we have been blessed with a team of magnificent volunteers who have given up their precious time to help us clear up the i2i Stadium, which at times was a grim task. The support we received from both far and wide has been extremely humbling. From those who turned up over the Christmas break to help with the clear-up to those on the other side of the world who kindly sent us messages of support. It’s all been very much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Unfortunately despite everyone’s best efforts, it is likely that the ground will remain out of action for another couple of weeks. All being well, we’re hoping that the pitch will be playable in time for the Liversedge game on Saturday February 13th, but it is unlikely that the clubhouse will be back in use this season. We are just waiting to hear from our insurance company as to how we proceed from here.

After six weeks of no football, it was great to get back to winning ways – with 3-1 wins over Brigg Town and Parkgate. Credit must be given to the players who have kept themselves fit and continued to train hard throughout this unexpected break. There are often calls for a winter break in professional football. We’ll let you know whether it served to be a help or a hindrance at the end of the season. This Wednesday we travel to Pontefract Collieries who were beaten 3-0 by Worksop Town last Saturday. Please keep an eye on our website and social media for travel information. It’s unlikely that we’ll be running a coach, but there are sure to be car-sharing opportunities.

And finally, a big thank you to everyone at Selby Town for enabling us to get this game on today. It’s vitally important that the team get back to playing regularly, so their generosity in allowing us to use the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium is hugely appreciated. Football is so often misrepresented as a sport of great rivalry, but here in the NCEL we are constantly astounded by the sense of community spirit and togetherness that exists between fellow clubs.

Enjoy this afternoon’s game and thanks again for all your support.

TAFC Manager’s Notes

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Selby Town FC. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our good friends at Selby Town for allowing us the use of their facility. It’s a real testament of just how close the non-footballing community is in a club’s hour of need.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mark Shaw, his staff and indeed his players. We wish them a pleasant stay and hope they have a safe journey back to Worksop after the game.

There has been a lot of talk about today’s game for all the right reasons. Mark has got his side playing well enough to warrant their position at the top of the league, whilst we have had to endure a number of cancellations for all the wrong reasons. That aside, I am sure today’s game is going to be a big test of character for both teams. Whilst neither team will win the league with a win today, it will mean a huge boost ahead of the second half of the season. There are a number of really big games yet to play and we are fortunate enough to face most of our rivals at home spread across the remaining months. If today’s game is as exciting as the previous two this season, we are in for a great game.

Saturday saw us return to action for the first time in over thirty days and earn a very good victory against a much improved Brigg Town side; Jimmy Beadle earning the press with a brilliant hat trick. On Tuesday night away at Parkgate, our bogey team this year, we fired ourselves into the next round with three different scorers. Both victories were a welcome relief after not playing for such a long period of time.

The lads have trained hard over the unwelcome break. We go into the game with no injuries, no pending suspensions and a very strong squad. Competition for places is very good and players will need to be patient and await their opportunity. Will we strengthen again? If the right players are available and they fit in with what we want, then the answer is yes. Competition for places is essential in keeping players hungry and committed. We have a great group of players who are committed to what we are doing. Are we brave enough? Only time will tell.

Enjoy the game, the vocal support is essential in what I am sure will be one of the games of the season.

Yours in Sport, Billy #tadallover

12

The club was formed well over 150 years ago in 1861, but the first recorded items referring to its existence were dated 1873 at a time when home fixtures were played on a pitch at Netherton Road – the area presently occupied by the Holy Family RC School and the Outwood Portland school. Playing in green and white striped shirts the team was a mix-ture of professional and amateur players, administered by a 15 strong committee.

In 1886 William Allen of the Worksop and Retford Brewery Company was the President and it was his influence which guided the club, especially through the Great War period. Games were played against teams from the Sheffield area, and with the formation of the Sheffield Association League it became clear that a new ground of a more central situation was a priority.

This was resolved in 1891 when the Lord of the Manor, by this time the Duke of Newcastle, decided to sell the Worksop Manor Estate to Mr John Robinson who later became Sir John of Daybrook and Home Brewery fame. William Allen and his committee intervened and obtained the lease on land in the centre of the town which was bounded by Hardy Street, Allen Street, King Street and the River Ryton.

Known as Bridge Meadow, the ground was enclosed by a wooden fence with the River Ryton as its northern boundary. Football matches were played on the eastern side, the western portion was reserved for cricket and there was also a quarter mile cycle track, which led to Whit Monday becoming Worksop’s annual sport day.

In granting a lease to Worksop FC the Duke of Newcastle also gave the club £50 to assist in developing the ground. As a result, the pavilions which had been on Netherton Road were transferred onto the new site and they considered the only ground to better it in Nottinghamshire was Trent Bridge itself. Worksop’s playing strip was now black and white stripes, while the Queens Head and the old Cattle Market Hotel were used for changing.

The proximity of the River Ryton prompted fears of flooding, but this never happened until 1931, by which time the land between the River Ryton and the Chesterfield Canal had been acquired by William Josiah Moore of the Dragons Brewery, Bridge Street with the help of a sizeable mortgage. However, the ink had hardly dried on the conveyance when Mr Moore died at Carlton-in-Lindrick on 28th February 1891, leaving his widow and teen-age son to cope with the mortgage repayments.

Worksop FC’s president had built his house at Creswell Holme and his brewery was established on the banks of the Canal, so upon hearing that the Bridge Meadow lease was ending he agreed to purchase the freehold rights of the Moore’s land, exchanging the lease on the neighbouring Allen Street site and guaranteeing to build a wooden bridge that would give access to Central Avenue.

The Moore family continued to lease the old ground for grazing until the housing developers got to work by building the present pattern of streets. Mortgage payments on Central Avenue were taken over by Mr Allen, with a result that the Worksop FC finally had a permanent home, albeit as a tenant, as the owner was now President of Worksop Cricket and Sports Club. The same allocation of use was in operation and the first job for Worksop FC’s committee was the building of dressing rooms, which they did in the north-east corner where the Tigers Club, later called the Riverside Pub, stood until 2007. The changing facilities were basic and included a very large communal bath.

Sheffield Association and Midland League football attracted the fans and success in the latter was frequent both before and after the Great War. The 1908 season in the Midland League saw the Club, affectionately known as the Donovans, after the Duke of Portland’s racehorse, drawn away against Chelsea in the FA Cup Sixth Round. Worksop lost, but he gates were closed with 70,184 fans inside the ground – the

largest crowd ever to watch Worksop FC.

In 1911 the club celebrated its 50th birthday making the year of founda-tion 1861. Worksop’s 1921-22 season was the most successful since the war and the team included Hodthorpe born goalkeeper, Jack Brown, who became the club’s first England international. Signed from Worksop Wesley in 1919, Brown served Worksop brilliantly until his transfer to Sheffield Wednesday in 1923, after which he played for the English League against the Scottish League at Leicester in March 1927. At Wembley on 2nd April 1927 Brown kept goal for the full England side in a victory against Scotland and a reporter in Athletic News said; “Brown kept a splendid goal and in my opinion is in Sam Hardy’s class”. In a brief eight year career he had progressed from junior football to international class and always wore a brown jersey.

The 1921 season is also remembered for national recognition and disaster, because Worksop became one of the famous FA Cup minnows by holding Tottenham Hotspur to a 0-0 draw at the at White Hart Lane. The directors held a hasty meeting, and very conscious of the remaining unpaid mortgage and other hefty debts they agreed to reply the match at White Hart Lane and Worksop lost 9-0. It was a decision which knocked the stuffing out of Worksop supporters for decades. All the supporters had expected the replay to take place at Central Avenue and they showed their disappointment by staying away from matches with a result that the clubs debts mounted.

A stand had been built on the Nether-holme side of the ground but the roof blew off several times in storms, while the changing rooms became unusable and the teams prepared for matches at several town centre inns. Before and after the Second World War Worksop was run by a committee of the Cricket Club, chaired by George Raynes, but without the help of a most active sup-porters club could never have continued as a non-league professional club.

In the mid-1960s Worksop won the Midland League and became founder members of the Northern Premier League. Sadly after one season Worksop were relegated back to the Midland League. The arrival of Fred Horne as Chairman in the late 1970s gave a newly re-formed football club some stability again, culminating in re-entry into the Northern Premier League. The highlight of the seventies came when Worksop reached the FA Cup First Round and were drawn away to Barnsley on Saturday 25 November 1978. Although the Tigers lost by a 5-1 margin with the goal being scored by Kevin Woods, other famous names in that game included Alan Clarke (player manager), Peter Springett (goalkeeper), Graham Pugh, John Saunders (later to become Worksop’s centre half) and Mick McCarthy the current manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mr Horne saw the need for permanent headquarters and modern changing rooms, and with three-quarters of the popular stand once again missing it was arranged for these facilities to be built on the halfway line, where it remained until the club left Central Avenue. The derelict changing rooms made way for a Tigers Club, floodlights were acquired for the playing area and a licence to sell drink was obtained, although with conditions typical of similar private clubs in the sporting arena.

In the mid-1980s Worksop managed a couple seventh place finishes in the Northern Premier League before two contrasting seasons brought the decade to a close. 1987/8 saw a best ever 6th place attained, but 1988/89 found the Tigers bottom and relegated to the newly formed Division One. To pile on the agony the club also lost the Central Avenue ground, sold to extend the Shoppers car park.

The then Supporters Club, led by Mel Bradley, took over the ailing club and guided it through three difficult sea-sons, ground-sharing 20 miles away at Gainsborough Trinity. Tommy Spencer came for a second spell as manager and almost, but for the lack of its own

ground, guided the club back into the Premier Division at his second attempt.

The club moved to its next home of Sandy Lane in 1992 which was a former sand quarry, landfill site, and Council recreation ground. Because of the site’s history nearly two years of ground work were necessary before the grandstand and clubhouse could be erected and the new pitch laid. The 1990s on the playing front were dominated by one Kenny Clark, top scorer of no less than six seasons, and latterly the arrival of a new management team, Paul Mitchell and Danny Hague, who in 1997/8 regained for the club the Premier Division place lost 10 years earlier.

The very first season back in the top flight brought a best ever runners-up place, while the first season of the new century saw a Quarter-final place in the FA Trophy Cup competition against Forest Green Rovers which the Tigers lost by a 2-1 margin, the goal-scorer being Gary Townsend.

The highlight of the 2002/03 season was Worksop’s 2-1 away victory against Chester City in the FA Trophy com-petition who at the time were lying in second place in the Conference League. Worksop’s scorers on that day were Gary Townsend and Gavin Smith with a late winner. In mid April 2003 Paul Mitchell and his assistant Peter Rinkcavage were dismissed after a successful six and a half year spell and the Board appointed new Manager, Steve Ludlam, with whom they put their trust to gain promotion to the Nationwide Conference North League. The Tigers completed the 2002/03 season after winning the Sheffield Senior Cup by a 2-1 margin against Doncaster Rovers at Hillsborough. The scorers were Mark Barnard and Ryan Ludlam, son of manager Steve, who scored a winning penalty just two minutes from time to secure the silverware.

After gaining entry to the Conference North league by virtue of a seventh place finish, financial difficulties off the field forced the club into a Creditors Voluntary Agreement. But despite a 10

point deduction the club just managed to stave off relegation down to the UniBond Premier League. Manager Steve Ludlam left the club and the former Barnsley and Celtic favourite Ronnie Glavin was installed in May 2004 along with his assistant Peter Price. The club reached the quarter finals of the FA Trophy in 2005/06, after victories over Conference opposition in Burton Albion and Accrington Stanley along the way.

In September 2006 Ronnie Glavin left the club and caretaker boss Ian Bowling was installed as temporary manager, winning the Manager of the Month award for October. Ex-Chairman Keith Ilett was given the position of Life President of the club after many years involvement. John Hepworth became chairman of the Club.

Unfortunately, after such a promising start to Ian Bowling’s tenure, results faded and Worksop were relegated to the Premier Division of the UniBond League at the end of 2006/07. Peter Rinkcavage returned to Worksop in June 2007 (where he has been player, coach and assistant manager in the past) to take the club forward on the playing side. Together with his assistant manager Jason Maybury, Peter managed to achieve a complete turnaround on the field which culminated in an excellent ninth place finish in the league.

At the end of the 2007-08 season, Worksop Town was locked out of its Sandy Lane ground by the leaseholder, who later was to sell the ground to Parramore FC from Sheffield. 2008-09 was spent at Hucknall Town FC and after a difficult first half of the season whilst the club were reeling from losing the ground, manager Peter Rinkcavage turned the fortunes of the club around and results were much improved after the New Year, maintaining the club’s Premier League status.

2009-10 saw the Tigers play their home games at Ilkeston Town which became a turbulent season for the tigers. It started with promise and ended almost in disaster, players coming and going because of financial problems. John Hepworth [chairman] decided that he

had done all he could do and handed the club over to Jason Clark.

2010-11 saw Jason at the helm and under his guidance we had a good season, playing at Retford United. He appointed Martin McIntosh as first team manager part way through the season and only just failed to get a playoff place.

2011-12 The Tigers were back in town after three years on the road, back at Sandy Lane, sharing with the new owners Parramore Sports and hoping to do well. A Sheffield Senior Cup victory over Frickley at Hillsborough augured well for the future.

2012-13 brought another new manager in Simon Clark looking to improve on recent performances, but after looking good for a play-off place the team faded away to finish 9th and he departed. Last season was the first for new Manager Mark Shaw who performed miracles on a reduced budget getting the team into the promotion play off places by finishing fourth. A defeat at AFC Fylde saw the hopes fade but just a short time later news broke that club backer Jason Clark was leaving and that the Board had resigned from the Northern Premier League.

2014-15 saw the formation of the brand

new TEAM500 membership scheme, with the support of this, Mark Shaw was able to put a squad together that competed at the sharp end of NCEL Premier Division all season, only to finish just short in second place. We also saw the ground-breaking introduction of our new academy, featuring college and under 19’s teams, and the formation of our ladies side.

With all these things in place, the future is looking very bright indeed, and we shall be looking to push on in the 2015-16 with sights firmly set on finishing one place higher than the last campaign.

TAFC Match Preview

Tadcaster Albion v Worksop Town30th January 2016.

Welcome to the players, fans and officials of Worksop Town to our first ‘home’ league game of 2016. On Wednesday evening, The Tigers had a big 8-1 win at home against Garforth Town, The Miners consolation goal coming from George Conway who scored his second goal for them in 2 games. This puts Worksop Town 4 points clear at the top of the NCEL Premier League table. They are 8 points ahead of The Brewers having played 4 games more. They are the league’s leading scorers with 89 goals from their 26 games played. In 2016, they have taken 13 points from 5 games played, scoring 20 goals in those games.

Worksop Town this season have taken 29 points from 12 away games. Their leading goalscorer is Kyle Jordan with 27 goals in all competition, although

Matthew Booth is in great form with 2 hat tricks in the last 2 league games. Back in October, the reverse game at Worksop Town was won 2-1 by Tadcaster Albion with the goals coming from Nick Black and Jason Mycoe in front of a crowd of 879.

Elsewhere in the NCEL Premier League today, Bridlington Town are at home to Staveley Miners Welfare, Handsworth Parramore are at home to Pontefract Collieries, whilst Cleethorpes Town are at home in FA Vase action. I predict a cracking game today between Tadcaster and Worksop with The Brewers just coming out on top 3-2 . Thank you for your attendance today in the special circumstances. Finally, a big Thank You to all at Selby Town for agreeing to host the game today and all their hard work in getting the game played today.

Head-2-Head Worksop Town FC By Ian Tyssen

Although the Brewers have only met Worksop Town on three occasions in the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL), there has been no shortage of drama.

All three encounters have come in the last 14 months and honours have been shared - each team winning one game since a draw in the first game.

November 2014’s meeting at Sandy Lane exploded into life after just three minutes, when former Premier League midfielder Jonathan Greening was shown a controversial red card. The Tigers then opened up a 2-0 lead, which they held beyond half time. The Brewers dominated the second half, with Josh Greening pulling one goal back on the hour. Following delays, due to

disturbances in the 540 strong crowd, Andy Milne clinched an equaliser deep into added time and the game finished 2-2.

The final game of last season saw the clubs meet at the i2i Stadium in a game to decide who would finish second in the NCEL Premier Division, behind champions Shaw Lane Aquaforce. The majority of the 551 crowd were feeling optimistic after 32 minutes, when Calum Ward converted a penalty for the hosts. Worksop equalised through a Connor Sellars penalty just before half time and the same player went on to score the winning goal early in the second half. So, after a 2-1 victory, it was the Tigers who lifted the runners up trophy.

Last October, the Brewers picked up

an impressive 2-1 victory at Sandy Lane, helped by Nick Black and Jason Mycoe goals in the first half. Worksop’s Julian Lawrence was sent off during the second half but Albion were unable to take advantage and extend their lead. In fact, it was the Tigers’ Steve Woolley who scored a late goal and set up a nervous last few minutes. Again, there were unsavoury scenes, after the final whistle, from some sections of the crowd of 879.

In the last game to be played at the i2i Stadium before the recent floods, Worksop Town were beaten 4-1 in an FA Vase second round tie. A crowd of 307 saw Josh Barrett, Adam Baker (2) and Nick Black give the Brewers a 4-0 lead before Steve Woolley again scored a consolation.

NCEL 2015-16 Brigg Town FC v TAFC

Brilliant Beadle Hat-Trick Sees Off Brigg Tadcaster Albion returned to action after 33 days without a match due to the horrendous weather with a 3-1 victory over Brigg Town courtesy of a hat-trick from Captain Fantastic Jimmy Beadle. Boss Billy Miller made four changes to the side that drew with Parkgate all the way back on the 19th December. Conor Sellars, George Conway, Andy Milne and Carl Stewart dropped out for Matt Heath, Adam Baker, Josh Greening and the new signing Jonathan Greening.

It took just five minutes for The Brewers to create a serious goal scoring opportunity as Josh Greening picked up a loose ball in his own half, carried the ball over 40 yards and played it through to Jimmy Beadle who struck left-footed from inside the penalty area but off target.

Taddy got off to a positive start, however with only seven minutes gone; they were enraged to not be awarded a penalty kick. First Jordan Armstrong was bundled down but all in the ground agreed it wasn’t a foul but following this Josh Greening poked the ball away and looked to be impeded, it looked fairly obvious however the referee wasn’t convinced.

If Beadle’s first chance in the opening minutes was a good chance, his opportunity in the 17th minute was a glorious chance. Jonathan Greening took a quick corner to Liam Ormsby who set himself and curled in a deep cross to which Matt Heath stretched his neck muscles and headed across goal where Beadle was waiting five yards out. The keeper was now out of action as he went for the cross, all Beadle had to do was hit the target but he leathered it on the volley with his left-foot and somehow sent his shot into the side-netting. The home side had their first real attempt on goal after 23 minutes as Paul Grimes tried his luck with a curler from 19 yards to which Stevens comfortably pushed

over his goal. From the resulting corner The Zebras came close once more as the set-piece was cleared back out to Captain Anthony Bowsley who smashed low and hard from an acute angle but Jordan Armstrong stayed attached to his post and was able to hook clear.

Central defender Gregg Anderson was the next man to come close as he glanced over from close range but moments later The Brewers squandered another big chance to take the lead. Beadle cleverly flicked the ball in behind the Brigg defence to the on rushing Josh Greening whose goal bound shot was terrifically saved by stopper Jody Barford.

There was a fear that the recent lack of match time would affect Taddy’s performance however this didn’t appear to be the case as it was fast and as flowing as ever. With half-time approaching, The Brewers were pushing hard to break the deadlock and had another super chance to do so. Jason Mycoe played it to Josh Greening who naughtily let it run through his legs to Adam Baker whose cross was cut out, a shot direct at goal may have been the best bet in hindsight.

Into the 45th minute and Taddy did take the lead as left-back Dan Clayton whipped in an absolute beauty of a cross to Jimmy Beadle who headed into the top corner expertly, it must have been the freshly shaven head.

Half-Time: Brigg Town 0-1 Tadcaster Albion

The home side came out in the second half and attacked Taddy from the off. All in attendance must have thought the match was about to be levelled up as a couple of ricochets fell kindly for Paul Grimes inside the area but Matt Heath put in an exceptional last ditch tackle to deny the striker a shot at goal.

Substitute Connor Sellars came close to scoring his first for the club with a powerful strike which whistled inches wide of the mark however, The Brewers did double their lead in the 62nd minute and it was that man again, Jimmy Beadle. Jordan Armstrong had the ball at his feet on the right-hand side, looked up and floated it into the box and Jimmy Beadle glanced it

into the far corner. Believe it or not that is two goals inside the penalty area for Jimmy, unusual for him.

Just two minutes later and Jimmy Beadle completed his hat-trick and he certainly saved the best till last. The Tadcaster skipper couldn’t quite control a cute flick from Greening but Beadle quickly turned and contested Oliver Fisher for the ball. Beadle of course outmuscled the Brigg full-back and then hit an absolutely stunning strike from 23 yards which dipped into the far corner, an outstanding goal.

The home side rallied and did in fact pull a consolation goal back with 10 minutes remaining. Elliott Broughton slotted in substitute David Dean who rolled the ball through Gary Stevens’ legs and into the back of the net.

Into the last 10 minutes and Taddy nearly netted a fourth as Jonathan pulled it back to brother Josh Greening but the attacker struck narrowly over the target.

The Brewers sat deep in the final stages which allowed Brigg to push hard to score a second but Gregg Anderson and Matt Heath were defending terrifically and that was how it ended.

With all the problems Tadcaster and Tadcaster Albion have had from the floods over Christmas, the three points put a few smiles back on the faces of Taddy fans.

Full-Time: Brigg Town 1-3 Tadcaster Albion

NCEL 2015-16 Parkgate FC v TAFC

Sellars shines as Taddy advance in League Cup Two goals in the first 13 minutes from Conor Sellars and Adam Baker made it look like it was going to be a long night for Parkgate however they bit back at the start of the second half with Jake Ashton heading past Gary Stevens. The Steelmen pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half but it was The Brewers who netted the fourth and final goal of the tie as Jonathan Greening rounded off a sublime counter attack. Manager Billy Miller made just the one change to Saturday’s victory at Brigg Town with Conor Sellars replacing the wounded Jason Mycoe.

As Taddy got the cup tie underway, the exuberant home fans let off a smoke bomb, yes really, but unfortunately for them it was Tadcaster who flew out of the blocks. Adam Baker’s reverse through ball to Conor Sellars was cutely flicked around goalkeeper Spink by the former Worksop man but the shot rolled agonizingly wide of the mark.

The Brewers came close once again to taking the lead in the opening minutes as Sellars’ deep corner was met by Gregg Anderson whose header was deflected narrowly over the crossbar.

Taddy did however break the deadlock in the 10th minute with Conor Sellars scoring his first goal for the club.

One half of the goal was fortunate and the other half was utter brilliance. John Lufubu played it back to his goalkeeper who back tracked and passed it to Andy Higgins who was facing the other way and already jogging out. The ball comically cannoned off the defender’s ankles and fell to the lurking Sellars and there was nothing lucky about the finish. The dinky attacker cryuff turned past the unfortunate Higgins and perfectly chipped over the Parkgate stopper with his weaker left-foot.

Taddy were in full flow and they doubled their lead just three minutes later.

Full-back Jordan Armstrong clipped it in to Josh Greening who pulled off one of his clever flicks to the in-sync Jimmy Beadle who shifted it straight back to Greening before unleashing a shot from 23 yards which was the right height for Spink and he comfortably palmed the strike away. However Conor Sellars was quickest to react to the loose ball on the right hand side and he pulled back to Adam Baker who smashed in from six yards.

Parkgate were struggling to cope with the potent Taddy attackers and with 15 minutes gone it was very nearly 3-0 and game over.

Jordan Armstrong marauded down the right-hand side and curled a cross in to Josh Greening who brilliantly flicked goal wards but Spink stopped well.

Taddy somewhat relented and Parkgate did then work their way back into the cup tie and had their first half chance after 27 minutes. A cross from the left travelled all the way through to right-back John Lufubu who was standing out for the home side and he wriggled past Dan Clayton and squeezed a cross in towards Jake Ashton but the striker’s scrappy effort couldn’t get past a mixture of Anderson and Stevens.

The Brewers were still looking dangerous when surging forward as Armstrong played it down the line for Sellars, who were both working brilliantly together, got to the by-line and dug out a cross to the back post where Jimmy Beadle waited but Andy Higgins flicked away before the Tadcaster captain could attack it.

Taddy were looking to wrap up the cup tie in the first half and had another brilliant chance to do so just before half-time as Liam Ormsby threaded an eye of a needle through ball in behind to Adam Baker who struck a low shot into the side netting.

Half-Time: Parkgate 0-2 Tadcaster Albion

Into the second half and the home side got off to the perfect possible start as they pulled a goal back just

five minutes into the half. Alex Lill stretched his legs down the left-hand side and whipped in a cross to Jake Ashton who flicked a header downwards which crept underneath Gary Stevens in the Taddy goal.

The second half wasn’t a classic by any means as both sides were misplacing passes left, right and centre and chances were few and far between.

Credit to Parkgate though, they were giving it a real good go to level the tie and did come close on a number of occasions. The best chance for the home side came with 15 left on the watch as a low driven cross down the corridor of uncertainty was almost met by a diving in attacker who just couldn’t stretch enough to tap into the gaping net.

The Brewers could not replicate their superb first half performance but they did create half a chance in the 82nd minute. Jimmy Beadle sprayed a terrific ball out to substitute Nick Black who pulled back to the unmarked Josh Greening on the edge of the box but the striker’s shot was tame and easy for Richard Spink to hold onto.

Into the final few minutes and Tadcaster Albion wrapped up the tie in exceptional fashion.

The goal actually came from a Parkgate corner and as it got cleared Nick Black broke out from the back and powered through midfield carrying the ball over 40 yards before shifting it to Josh Greening who kept it moving by finding Beadle. The Taddy skipper waited and waited for the bursting run of Jonathan Greening and timed his square pass to perfection as Greening took it in his stride and coolly stroked it past the Parkgate goalkeeper to send Taddy through to Round 4 of the NCEL League Cup.

Full-Time: Parkgate 1-3 Tadcaster Albion

TEAM: Stevens, Armstrong, Clayton, Heath, Anderson, Ormsby, Sellars (Barrett 77), Jonathan Greening, Beadle (Stewart 86), Josh Greening, Baker (Black 73). Unused Subs: Milne

For the 2008/09 season, the membership of the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL) increased from 37 to 39 clubs.

At the end of the 2007/08 season, Glapwell had been promoted to the Northern Premier League (NPL) Division One South, with Bridlington Town moving in the opposite direction from the NPL.

South Normanton Athletic (folded) Borrowash Victoria and Gedling Town (both to the East Midlands Counties League) left the NCEL but there were five new members of the league - Askern Villa, Appleby Frodingham, Grimsby Borough (all from the Central Midlands League), Brighouse Town and Hemsworth Miners Welfare (both from the West Riding County Amateur League).

Within the NCEL, Dinnington Town and Hall Road Rangers were promoted to the Premier Division, whilst Glasshoughton Welfare were relegated to Division One.

The Brewers hosted a strong York City team in the first game of pre season and lost 0-6 in front of a crowd of 450. Recent Tadcaster Albion player, David Brown scored two goals, as a trialist.

Tadcaster Albion’s opening 10 NCEL games saw them pick up only four points, with a 1-0 win at Yorkshire Amateur and a 0-0 draw against Brighouse Town. The heaviest defeat of the season came in those opening fixtures - 0-7 at champions Scarborough Athletic.

Back to back victories against bottom club Glasshoughton Welfare in early November helped to restore some pride - winning 4-0 at home and 1-0 away.

The next 10 fixtures brought a mixed set of results, including four wins and one draw. It looked like the season may improve.

Unfortunately, only two draws and one victory were forthcoming in the final 13 games of the season. Barton Town Old Boys, who would finish fifth,

were beaten 3-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Darren Wilson.

The Brewers conceded seven goals for the second time, when defeated 2-7 at second place Rainworth Miners Welfare and the season concluded with a 0-6 home loss against Rossington Main.

Tadcaster Albion, who collected 31 points from 36 games, finished the season in 17th place in the league.

The average NCEL attendance at Ings Lane was 64, with the crowds at 17 games being below average and just one above - 340 for the visit of Scarborough Athletic in January.

In the season’s FA competitions, the Brewers encountered three teams from the north east. Dunston Federation were 4-0 winners at home in the FA Cup extra preliminary round tie. The FA Vase brought a little more success for Albion, with a 2-1 victory at Hebburn Town in the second qualifying round. However, Spennymoor Town proved too strong in the first round proper - winning 5-1 in Tadcaster.

NCEL newcomers Hemsworth Miners Welfare knocked the Brewers out of the League Cup - 4-3 in a penalty shootout, after a 1-1 draw.

In the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, AFC Emley were beaten 2-0 in the first round before a 3-4 home defeat against Staveley Miners Welfare in the second round.

A Jimmy Gore goal was not enough for the Brewers.

Ossett Albion, from the NPL Division One North, romped to an 8-3 triumph in the West Riding County Cup first round tie. The home side were 6-3 ahead at half time.

Our U21s play in the West Riding County FA Floodlit League (Central). During the 2014/15 season, they also made it to the Semi Final of the West Riding Floodlit League Cup. The players, who are aged 16 and over, train between 1 and 10 hours a week and also compete in regular development friendlies. Many of these friendlies are against youth teams from local professional clubs such as Leeds United and York City – giving each of our players a unique insight into the UK’s football system. Our U21 coaches Mike Mor-ton and Simon Collins not only have their FA Level 3 (UEFA B) qualification, but they also have experience of coaching with professional clubs such as Man-chester City and Leeds United. For more information on our U21 set up, please email [email protected].

Our Under 19 team is a newly formed side, which has been set up to help local talented players develop and hopefully progress into the Under 21s and the Tadcaster Albion first team. Players are all aged 16 and over. Coach Rich Taylor has coached in the USA and has also had a spell at Leeds United.

For more information on our U19 set up, please email [email protected].
