Design work has been completed on the college’s new website and the project has moved into a development phase that is on pace for a go-live date in May.
As the go-live date approaches, @Cypress will present an ongoing series of updates focusing on various aspects of the website. The website is being developed by Datatel along with a campus committee under the direction of Rick Rams, Dean of Student Support Services, the division that heads Cypress College’s outreach efforts.
This week, we look at how the site fits into the campus’ overall use of Internet technology. Special thanks go to Jessica Puma, a member of the Campus Technology Committee subcommittee that is working on the project, for authoring the following descriptions and purposes.
The overhaul of the campus website, along with the recent intro-duction of the “mygateway” portal and the growth of the Blackboard course management system in recent years, presents the need to define each site’s purpose.
Cypress College faculty and staff have access to three web-based tools that enable them to communicate and distribute materials online. The effective use of these systems depends on matching the right tool to specific communication and learning goals. Each of these tools ben-efits the Cypress College community in different, yet complementary ways:
❖ The course management system: Blackboard serves as the vir-tual classroom for web enhanced, online, and hybrid courses.
❖ The district portal: mygateway facilitates communication for staff and enrolled students, and can also be used to web enhance on-campus courses.
❖ The campus website: Active Campus is the public face of the college, available to anyone with an internet connection. The website is the place to publish information and documents available to anyone without a password.
Website Purpose:The Cypress College website is a marketing and information tool.
It has been designed to increase enrollment and provide easy access to campus information and services. While the primary goal of the site is to recruit prospective students, it also serves the campus community

and the general public. The purpose of the main web-site and all its sub-sites is to promote Cypress College general information, services, and programs.
Content Management: Active Campus:The Datatel Active Campus content management
system has been adopted to produce the campus web-site. A content management system (CMS) is a system used to create, deliver, and manage a website. In a CMS, web administrators maintain the site database, structure, and template-based design
Website Design & Content Ownership:The Cypress College website is designed to cre-
ate an integrated and consistent web experience for prospective and current students, faculty, staff, and the general public. To achieve this goal, the main website
and all sub-sites must preserve the designated site styles, navigation, and conform to content guidelines. The essential structure and design of the website is under the control of Academic Computing. Individual page or sub-site content is created and maintained by content authors. Such content is added to the site after review through an approval process.
System Administration: Site Design, Structure, & Navigation:
Cypress College has chosen a template-based design to ensure site consistency in visual presentation, navigation, content structure, and accessibility compli-ance. The essential features that define this design are controlled by the Active Campus system and are not available for individual user customization.
Next issue: Populating the website with content for the launch and ongoing.

Congratulations to the Cypress College’s Flying Chargers who took home the highly coveted Sportsmanship Award on Feb. 14-18 at the Region II Safecon Competition in Prescott, Arizona, at Love Field hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The competition brought competitors from across the region to compete, including San Jose State University, Mt. San Antonio College, San Diego Christian College, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and many cadets of the prestigious United States Air Force Academy. Students compete in events covering the skills of piloting, navigation, situational awareness, and meteorology, and aircraft identification and safety.
Among Cypress competitors, team captain Alex Culp ranked as second for top female competitor and placed sec-ond in message drop. Placing in other events, Culp and Brad Sprayberry, a returning team member, came close to placing in the top ten for multiple events.
For the first time, Cypress tested the possibility of adding a new component to the Flying Chargers which included the par-ticipation of Cypress College Airline and Travel Careers Program. As the first students testing this new component, Guadalupe Hernandez, Ashley Kelso, and Sonya Demczuk participated as members of the flying team helping to move aircraft, lend sup-port, and learn about aviation from a pilot standpoint. It was such a success that Kelso and Demczuk will be working with Culp and faculty advisor Daniel Wotring to make this a permanent and integral component of the team for years to come.
The Sportsmanship Award was presented to Cypress for the second time ever; the college was previously honored with the award in 1973 under the leadership of past faculty advisor Chuck Gifford. Gifford originally brought the aviation program to Cypress in 1967 and started the school’s flying team in March of 1968. This year is the school’s 41st year of continuous compe-tition at the Safecon.
Try-outs for the competitive team are held late in the fall semester, but participation with the team is open year round for volunteering in the community, restoring vintage aircraft, attend-ing or assisting with airshows, and participating in fly-ins, regular trainings, and practices. For information on the team, visit or e-mail Department Chair Kathleen Reiland.
The opening of Cypress College’s new Student Center has been pushed back from mid April to early May — with some possibility of an opening in late April for the
Bookstore. The delay comes because of an unanticipated issue
with underground utilities that is holding up site work.

It has become obvious that many young painters have shifted their concerns from
traditional discourses within painting toward discussions that extend the medium toward
new trajectories. Recent art school graduates—along with many emerging artists—have
gained inspiration from the graphic languages of the commercial world. The return to the
handmade and the hand drawn within the commercial fields of graphic design and
illustration, are a reaction to the prevailing influence of computer technology in those
fields.
While there is no doubt the artists being surveyed in Intersections are painters who work
within the support structure of the art world, the influences one can see from the world of
the larger visual culture is nothing but evident. Intersections bring to light these
dichotomies, attempting to provide a platform for discussions on this new intersection
within painting.
Intersections will be held in the new Cypress College Art Gallery. The new CCAG is
located in the heart of the Cypress College campus. Intersections will open on
Wednesday, March 12th and run thru April 10th. The show will feature 13-15 artists in
the main gallery and a installation by Alvin Gregorio in the Project Space.
