Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading Wis 1:13-15; 2:23-24

God did not make death, nor does he rejoice in the destruction of the living. For he fashioned all things that they might have being; and the creatures of the world are wholesome, and there is not a destructive drug among them nor any domain of the netherworld on earth, for justice is undying. For God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him. But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who belong to his company experience it.

Brothers and sisters: As you excel in every respect, in faith, discourse, knowledge, all earnestness, and in the love we have for you, may you excel in this gracious act also. For you know the gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. Not that others should have relief while you are burdened, but that as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their needs, so that their abundance may also supply your needs, that there may be equality. As it is written: Whoever had much did not have more, and whoever had little did not have less.

Gospel Mk 5:21-43 or 5:21-24, 35b-43

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea. One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him, saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him. There was a woman afflicted with hemorrhages for twelve years. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. She had heard about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak. She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” Immediately her flow of blood dried up. She felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. Jesus, aware at once that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who has touched my clothes?” But his disciples said to Jesus, “You see how the crowd is pressing upon you, and yet you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it. The woman, realizing what had happened to her, approached in fear and trembling. She fell down before Jesus and told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction.” While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue offi-cial, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. So he went in and said to them, “Why this commo-tion and weeping? The child is not dead but asleep.” And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At that they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.

Pensamientos/Reflexiones sobre el Evangelio de esta semana

El Evangelio de hoy relata dos historias de sanación. Una historia nos habla del

gran amor de un padre por su hija moribunda. La otra historia nos habla de una

mujer desesperada que arriesga mucho mientras busca la curación de Jesús.

En cada historia, la petición de curación es en sí misma un valiente acto de fe y, sin

embargo, la vida de cada persona que sufre representa circunstancias muy diferen-

tes. Se describe a Jairo como un funcionario de la sinagoga, un hombre de conside-

rable prestigio en la comunidad judía. Angustiado por la mala salud de su hija, se

acerca a Jesús y le pide que la cure. Aunque Mark no brinda muchos detalles, podemos imaginar que su hija ha

estado enferma durante algún tiempo y que su estado se está deteriorando. Cuando Jesús se va con Jairo, Marcos

describe a una segunda persona que busca la curación de Jesús, una mujer con una hemorragia. Esta mujer toca

Thoughts/Reflections about this week’s Gospel Reading

Today’s Gospel reports two stories of healing. One story tells us about a father’s great love for his dying daughter. The other story tells us about a desperate woman who risks much as she seeks healing from Jesus. In each story, the request for healing is itself a courageous act of faith, and yet very different circumstances are represented by the lives of each suffering person. Jairus is described as a synagogue official, a man of considerable

standing in the Jewish community. Distraught over his daughter’s poor health, he approaches Jesus and asks him to heal her. Although Mark doesn’t provide many details, we can imagine that his daughter has been ill for some time and that her condition is deteriorating. As Jesus leaves with Jairus, Mark describes a second person who seeks healing from Jesus, a woman with a hemorrhage. This woman secretly touches Jesus from behind and is immediately cured. In response, Jesus turns and asks who touched him. Jesus’ disciples, always a little clueless in Mark’s Gospel, help us envision the scene. The crowds are pushing in on Jesus, and yet he, knowing that power has gone out of him, asks who touched him. The woman could have remained anonymous, yet at Jesus’ question she steps forward and acknowledges what she has done. Jesus responds by acknowledging her as a model of faith and sends her away in peace. At this point, we can imagine Jairus’s impatience with Jesus; his daughter is dying and Jesus hasn’t helped him yet. As if to build a sense of urgency, messengers suddenly arrive and confirm Jairus’s worst fear: his daughter has died. Jesus curiously ignores their message and reassures Jairus. When they arrive at Jairus’s home, they find family and friends mourning the girl’s death. Jesus enters the room of the dead girl, takes her by the hand, and instructs her to arise. Jairus’s faith in Jesus has not been in vain; his daughter is restored to life. The contrasts between Jairus and the wom-an with the hemorrhage are stark and revealing. One is a man, the other is a woman. One is a public official, an important person in the community. The other is a woman who has lost everything to find a cure to a condition that separated her from the community. One approaches Jesus publicly. The other approaches Jesus secretly. Yet in each case, faith leads them to seek out Jesus in their time of need. The Gospel concludes with Jesus’ instructions to remain silent about this miracle. This is typical of Mark’s Gospel and is sometimes referred to as the mes-sianic secret. Repeatedly, those who witness Jesus’ power and authority are in-structed to not speak of what they have witnessed. These instructions appear im-possible to obey, and it is difficult to understand the purpose of these instructions. But in each case, they seem to emphasize the fact that each individual, including the reader of Mark’s Gospel, must, in the end, make his or her own judgment about Jesus’ identity. Each individual must make his or her own act of faith in affirming Jesus as God’s Son.

XIII Domingo Ordinario Primera Lectura Sb 1, 13-15; 2, 23-24 Dios no hizo la muerte, ni se recrea en la destrucción de los vivientes. Todo lo creó para que subsistiera. Las creaturas del mundo son saluda-bles; no hay en ellas veneno mortal. Dios creó al hombre para que nunca muriera, porque lo hizo a imagen y semejanza de sí mismo; mas por en-vidia del diablo entró la muerte en el mundo y la experimentan quienes le pertenecen.

Segunda Lectura 2 Cor 8, 7. 9. 13-1

Hermanos: Ya que ustedes se distinguen en todo: en fe, en palabra, en sabi-duría, en diligencia para todo y en amor hacia nosotros, distínganse también ahora por su generosidad. Bien saben lo generoso que ha sido nuestro Señor Jesucristo, que, siendo rico, se hizo pobre por ustedes, para que ustedes se hicieran ricos con su pobreza. No se trata de que los demás vivan tranquilos, mientras ustedes están sufriendo. Se trata, más bien, de aplicar durante nuestra vida una medida justa; porque entonces la abundancia de ustedes remediará las carencias de ellos, y ellos, por su parte, los socorrerán a uste-des en sus necesidades. En esa forma habrá un justo medio, como dice la Escritura: Al que recogía mucho, nada le sobraba; al que recogía poco, na-da le faltaba. Evangelio Mc 5, 21-43 En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús regresó en la barca al otro lado del lago, se quedó en la orilla y ahí se le reunió mucha gente. Entonces se acercó uno de los jefes de la sinagoga, llamado Jairo. Al ver a Jesús, se echó a sus pies y le suplicaba con insistencia: “Mi hija está agonizando. Ven a imponerle las manos para que se cure y viva”. Jesús se fue con él, y mucha gente lo seguía y lo apretujaba. Entre la gente había una mujer que padecía flujo de sangre desde hacía doce años. Había sufrido mucho a manos de los médicos y ha-bía gastado en eso toda su fortuna, pero en vez de mejorar, había empeora-do. Oyó hablar de Jesús, vino y se le acercó por detrás entre la gente y le tocó el manto, pensando que, con sólo tocarle el vestido, se curaría. Inme-diatamente se le secó la fuente de su hemorragia y sintió en su cuerpo que estaba curada. Jesús notó al instante que una fuerza curativa había salido de él, se volvió hacia la gente y les preguntó: “¿Quién ha tocado mi manto?” Sus discípulos le contestaron: “Estás viendo cómo te empuja la gente y to-davía preguntas: ‘¿Quién me ha tocado?’ ” Pero él seguía mirando alrede-dor, para descubrir quién había sido. Entonces se acercó la mujer, asustada y temblorosa, al comprender lo que había pasado; se postró a sus pies y le confesó la verdad. Jesús la tranquilizó, diciendo: “Hija, tu fe te ha curado. Vete en paz y queda sana de tu enfermedad”. Todavía estaba hablando Je-sús, cuando unos criados llegaron de casa del jefe de la sinagoga para decir-le a éste: “Ya se murió tu hija. ¿Para qué sigues molestando al Maestro?” Jesús alcanzó a oír lo que hablaban y le dijo al jefe de la sinagoga: “No te-mas, basta que tengas fe”. No permitió que lo acompañaran más que Pedro, Santiago y Juan, el hermano de Santiago. Al llegar a la casa del jefe de la sinagoga, vio Jesús el alboroto de la gente y oyó los llantos y los alaridos que daban. Entró y les dijo: “¿Qué significa tanto llanto y alboroto? La niña no está muerta, está dormida”. Y se reían de él. Entonces Jesús echó fuera a la gente, y con los padres de la niña y sus acompañantes, entró a donde esta-ba la niña. La tomó de la mano y le dijo: “¡Talitá, kum!”, que significa: “¡Óyeme, niña, levántate!” La niña, que tenía doce años, se levantó inme-diatamente y se puso a caminar. Todos se quedaron asombrados. Jesús les ordenó severamente que no lo dijeran a nadie y les mandó que le dieran de comer a la niña.
