I am so honored to take on the role of PTA President at FAMS for the upcoming year! We are fortunate to have an AMAZING team of volunteers who rely upon each other to help enrich our children’s school experience and we contribute to a successful and rewarding environment throughout the year in so many ways.

Your new PTA board is: Swa Bhutada, Vice President; Lina Foster, Treasurer; Geri Oppler, Secretary; Lisa Graff, Recording Secretary. We are all excited to work with you!

Much of the PTA planning for next year is underway and there are some wonderful programs already in place that we sponsor. However, we are s ll in need of some volunteers to chair commi ees for 2012‐2013. There are opportuni es in ½ day Bagel sales, Eighth grade Dance Chaperones, Field Day Coordinator, Back to School Coordinator and Newsle er, just to name a few, so if you are interested in helping out, please email Swa Bhutada at swa [email protected] .

The PTA is proud to offer school supplies for the first me to our FAMS students. Mr. Keiser and Mrs. Prunk worked with the teachers to provide parents with a list of “basics” for each grade so you should not need to spend hours purchasing school supplies the first week of school. Of course, there may be some special requests from individual teachers, however they should be minimal. The school supplies will be available on the first day of school at FAMS. We are using Schoolkidz which is part of Staples and there is an ONLINE ORDERING SYSTEM that will only be available from MAY 30th through June 13th. about summer days, relaxing and enjoying a break from the rou nes of homework, tests

It seems like just yesterday we were ringing in a new school year in September. The end of the school year at FAMS is filled with ac vi es and prepara ons for the next school year. Please help your child remain diligent in comple ng the school year strong and preparing for the many end of the year tests, quizzes, projects, and exams. Here are a few of the important upcoming events:

Final Exams will be held on June 6‐12 for 8th grade students and June 11‐12 for 7th and 8th grade students. Exams will be held during the morning and students will then con nue to every period in a special shortened schedule. Ques ons and specific concerns or details about Final Exams should be directed to the appropriate teacher.

June 6th – Language Arts (Grade 8 Only)

June 7th – Science (Grade 8 Only)

June 8th – Social Studies (Grade 8 Only)

June 11th – Math (Grade 8), Language Arts (Grade 7), Wri ng (Grade 6)

June 12th – World Language (Grades 7/8), Reading (Grade 6)

June 13th – Math (Grade 7 Algebra Students Only)

Report cards will be posted for Parent Access on Monday, June 25, 2012. If you have any individual ques‐ons, our guidance counselors will be available to answer any ques ons. Please leave them a detailed message

and they will do the best they can to answer your concerns.

2012‐2013 Student Math Placement will be posted for Parent Access in early to mid July. Each year, every student is evaluated based on mul ple criteria consis ng of both subjec ve and objec ve items including local and standardized assessments, work habits, and overall performance. According to these scores, students will be placed in the appropriate level for math for the 2012‐2013 school year.

NJASK 2012 Test results are es mated to be delivered some me in mid to late August.

2012‐2013 Student Homeroom and Locker Assignments will be mailed home in the middle of August invi ng parents and students to Locker Day on August 30th and will provide specific informa on about lockers and home‐room.

Looking Back….

The Living Lessons Walk‐a‐Thon was a huge success as all students walked and ran during their gym classes on Monday May 7th. Students then raised money based on their lap totals and the students at FAMS raised over $10,000 to support the Eric LeGrand BELieve Founda on. Thank you to all the students and parents that support‐ed this cause.

Mrs. Milano took her 8th grade ACES classes to this year's Mini Model Congress in Trenton, NJ. While most students won awards for excellence in bill wri ng, Derek Mahler, Jack Kerin, Brendan Horng, Anthony Valvano, Savannah Su on, Emily McMichael and Alon Millet also won awards for Excellence in Debate. In addi on, Bobby Bailey, Jack Kerin and Anthony Ruggiero not only had their bills pass out of separate commi ees, but full Congressional passage at the end of the day.

While this year has been both exci ng and challenging, I am proud of all that we have accomplished and how much our students have matured. From par cipa ng in the many extra curricular ac vi es to raising funds for various charitable organiza ons, our students con nue to get involved at FAMS. Not only are they involved in things that they enjoy, but also look to help others as evidence in the amount of charitable work they have done. I con nue to look forward to seeing our students as they grow into young adults and work towards a bright future. FAMS is truly an amazing and unique place.

Please accept my best wishes for a safe and enjoyable summer. Enjoy these months, as they always seem to slip by a bit faster than those experienced in the middle of winter! Best wishes to all of our eighth grade students who are gradua ng from FAMS on Thursday, June 21, 2012. Enjoy your high school days, as you will remember them for the rest of your lives. Accept the challenge and exert your best efforts in all that you do. Success will come as a product of your work ethic. I look forward to seeing all of our students who are returning to FAMS in September.

8th Grade ACE Program - Bergen County Brain Busters Tournament


Mrs. Milano would like to extend a huge congratulations to her 8th grade ACE students Nina Arcot, Emily McMichael, Bobby Bailey and Alon Millet for coming in 1st place in the Bergen County Brain Busters Tournament. As a result of their outstanding performance, Franklin Lakes placed first out of 39 highly competitive teams from 20 schools throughout the county!

Also qualifying to participate in the tournament and doing a wonderful job representing our district were Jared Pomerantz, Jack Kerin, Michael Gerber and Samantha Mariani.

This year, the 2011-2012 PTA has been a collaborative effort with parents, teachers, and administrators. It has been one of the most exciting years for our students which has allowed them to participate in sponsored events that were offered by our Parent Teacher Association. It included the Camfel Assembly, Rachel's Challenge, Jeff Jost Dogs Assembly, and the Matt Bellace Assembly which inspired and provided social awareness and challenges for our students of today.

This year's Week of Respect, Dads' Volunteer Week, Red Ribbon Week and the Book Fair encouraged students to actively participate in improving their awareness in the areas of character education, volunteerism, and inspiring them to be their best. With our ad-ministrators overseeing the Student and Patriot of the Month Breakfast and attending the sixth grade dances, they have seen the growth of our students' character at FAMS.

Lastly, the teachers would like to thank the PTA for providing the delicious welcome back staff luncheon, holiday luncheon and improvements to the Teacher's Room. In order for all these wonderful events and exhibits of generosity to take place the PTA, which includes parents, teachers, staff and administrators, has to financially support our organization.

We want to thank all those who have donated the $10.00 each year and welcome all newcomers to support this organization. Have a wonderful 2012 New Year!
