FROM THE PRINCIPAL The start of Term 3 sees us welcome several new staff members. Mrs Kate
Taylor joins us in the Drama area to replace Mr Soszynski who retired at the
end of Term 2. Mr Aaron Cairns will be teaching a .2 load of HPE each Tues-
day. Mr Rory Campbell will be teaching Music and Social Science for the re-
mainder of 2016 to replace Mr Sweeney who is on 12 months leave to take up
a teaching position in Vietnam. We also welcome Ms Anna Fitzgerald who will
be covering Mr Sheppard in HPE.. Ms Jill Burrill has been appointed as Assis-
tant Principal, and will work as our Literacy Support leader and with the Grade 7
Team. And finally Ms Jill Alexander has been appointed Assistant Principal of
Literacy at Ogilvie High School, beginning next week. Our school community would
like to acknowledge Jill’s high level of professionalism as Acting Assistant Principal
for significant periods of time, teacher of Social Sciences and as an outstanding
Grade Supervisor. We wish Jill the very best in her new role and feel sure she will
be highly successful.
Term 3 is very much the start of the business end of the year with a number of
significant events in place which set students up for a successful conclusion to the
year in Term 4. Our Parent Teacher Evening on Monday of this week saw a very
large number of parents take the opportunity to discuss progress to date, and to
look at the all-important future focus areas for the next two terms. The Parent
Information session which followed, attracted a smaller number of parents seeking
additional detail with regards to courses on offer for 2017, some of which are
being offered for the first time. Other key events which are on the radar for Term
3 include preliminary enrolments for Year 11 at EC (17 and 18 August), Grade
10 Exam Week starting on Friday 26 August, Peer Support Training for Grade 9
(1 and 2 September) and the RYDA Road Safety excursion (9 September) for
Grade 10’s. As always this term promises to be a busy one.
This week our school also hosted the launch of White Ribbon Day by the Premier,
The Honourable Will Hodgman MP and the Commissioner of Police, Mr Darren
Hine. Our Prefect Board as usual played a key role in welcoming our guests and
hosting the event. Today saw the completion of our whole school Swimming Car-
nival with the results announced at the end of today, technology permitting.
Finally, I would like to welcome Mr Szczerbanik back to
our school after an extended absence for the last ten
weeks while he has filled the position of Principal Network
Leader.

GRADE 7 NEWS Welcome back to Term 3! This term the Grade 7’s
are busy deciding on their optional subjects for Grade
8. Boys have all now had a taste of many of the dif-
ferent subjects we offer at New Town High, and next
year they have the opportunity to choose a number
of optional subjects which cater to their interests.
Students have three weeks to decide and we encour-
age parents to talk about the options with their sons.
Every day we are delighted by how very well present-
ed our Grade is. New Town High boys always wear
their uniforms with pride and the Grade 7’s have very
quickly taken this on board. The weather continues
to be cool and windy, and we encourage all boys to
rug up by wearing their blue woollen jumper and
spray jacket on formal days, and their rugby jumper
and spray jacket on sports days. Today our boys had
their first real taste of a New Town High Swimming
Carnival. It was a fantastic day of competition, PB’s
and House spirit!

Welcome Back to Term 3
This term will be a busy one for the Grade 9 boys.
We start off with the Grade 8/9 Social to be held
on 4 August, 2016. This Social is an invitation only
event. Your son/student will be issued a ticket if he
has earnt the privilege of participating in this reward
evening.
The Swimming Carnival was held today. Mr New-
bold and Ms Alexander are pleased to see the Grade
9 boys dominate in every race on the day. All boys
were encouraged to enter in competitive and wading
races. This grade has always had a strong tradition
and a long standing philosophy that all boys either
compete or support their Grade 9 peers and House
colleagues on the day.
All Grade 9 boys will participate in the Peer Support
Training Days on 1 & 2 September, 2016. The
boys are already asking about how they can contin-
ue to improve their selection candidacy for the
2017 leadership roles.

ly a worthy and important program for the community.
We congratulate Nicholas Baker, 10D

recent U15 National Australian Rules

While Term 3 traditionally has cold weather and with
few breaks in the calendar, it is an extremely important
term for all Grade 10 students. Boys will be seriously
considering important issues for their future regarding

9/10 WRITERS’ WORKSHOP
CLASS REPORT On Tuesday 26 July, the Writers’ Workshop class
had our school page published in the Mercury. The
page promoted New Town High by featuring articles
on our school’s Athlete Development Program sub-
jects and the recent administration area redevelop-
ment.
The ADP article was written by Ruben Carlsson,
10D2, and the accompanying vox pop was conduct-
ed by Jack Rose, 10E1. The article about our new
office area was written collaboratively by Bradley
Cobern, 10J2 and Zeke Kendrick, 10E1. The be-
hind the scenes work was also done by our advertis-
ing team: salesman Ruben Carlsson, 10D2 and
graphic designer Jack Rose, 10E1.
The class would like to thank all of the businesses
who purchased an advert on the page: The Hobart
Book Shop, Iris Computing, Bay Physio, Total Turf
Care, New Town Plaza, MSP Photography, Van Die-
man Diamond and Coder College. Without the sup-
port of these businesses, our Mercury school page
would not have been possible.
We urge all members of the NTHS school commu-
nity to return the favour and support these busi-
nesses wherever possible. Even a gesture such as
visiting their website and/or ‘liking’ their Facebook
pages would help to indicate our school communi-
ty’s appreciation of their support.
If you missed this edition of the newspaper, all
school pages are accessible online at the
‘Newspapers in Education’ section of the Mercury’s
website: www.mercurynie.com.au.
I look forward to sharing more success from the
wonderful student authors, poets and journalists in
the 9/10 Writers’ Workshop class in future newslet-
ters over the remainder of the year.

2017 COURSE SELECTION It is time for students and families to discuss course
options for 2017.
Where do I find the information: Visit the school
intranet and under the link for Parents or Students you
can access the course selection booklets for Grade 8,
Grades 9 & 10. There is also a link under the Student
menu for “Course Selection 2017” which will take you
to the online system that we use for students to enter
in their preferences.
Why do I need a password? Each student has a
unique access code and password and there are includ-
ed in a letter given to students this week.
How many subjects do I need to choose? Students
can select year long courses, ½ year courses or a blend
of year and ½ year. We request students also choose
additional courses as a back-up should your chosen
course(s) not be available due to over/under subscribed
or timetable clashes.
What next? Print off the subject selection receipt
form and ensure the receipt has a parent/guardian
signature.
Return the receipt to school office by:
Grade 8 16 August 2016
Grades 9 &10 23 August 2016

rent students at the university who connect really well
with young people.

mencing on 26 August and concluding at 3pm Friday
2 September. Parents and students can view the Ex-
amination Timetable on the school intranet under the

ARTS LEARNING AREA
AS AN OPTION FOR YOUR SON IN
2017 – SOME THOUGHTS As I briefly discussed in the last newsletter, it is time
for your son to make choices for his subjects in 2017.
When boys choose subjects they need to consider
not only the practical nature of the choices they
make as it relates to their skill sets, but also how
those subjects relate to their continued enjoyment of
education at New Town High. It is essential that
your son feels happy to come to school and feel posi-
tive about his learning. In this way he can cope with
aspects of his education that at times, he may find
challenging. Remember “Learning” is what we send
our children to school for!
The positive aspects in your son’s attitude to learning
are driven by his genuine enjoyment of a learning area
and his relationships with teachers he feels comforta-
ble with and can relate to. Arts learning areas of Mu-
sic, Speech and Drama and Visual Art are not only a
great way to balance out your sons’ timetable against
more academic subjects with their highly regulated
and prescribed curriculums, but also a genuinely great
way of developing original and creative thinking. For
example, it is a well-known fact that studying Music
improves Mathematical understandings and that stud-
ying Arts subjects helps the right brain hemisphere to
develop empathy. The right brain hemisphere is re-
sponsible for humane qualities such as being able to
appreciate other people’s feelings (including your
own and animals!) and therefore being able to live
with, work with and or manage people with love, un-
derstanding, respect and consideration. Very im-
portant life relationship skills, indeed! Enough of the
popular psychology!
Sometimes students are afraid to participate in Arts sub-
jects because they see themselves as ‘not talented”. Every-
one makes Art. Young children make Visual Art, act out
dramas, dance and make music without feeling self-
conscious. Small children simply “do it”! Art is directly
part of what makes us human. All boys can make Art and
participate in all Arts learning areas, provided they are will-
ing to genuinely involve themselves in Arts programs, how-
ever, learning skills takes time and those boys who follow
Arts subjects through from junior to senior high school
tend to generally perform at a higher achievement level
and become more confident with processes.
Arts at New Town High have been developed and taught
by a skilled and dedicated staff for many years. We are
proud of our achievements and continue to look at ways
of improving our Arts programs in order to continue to
provide your son with a great education. We would like
you to seriously consider an Arts subject as an option for
your son in 2017.
Please note that Design in Graphic Art and Design
Graphics are not the same subject and sometimes boys
and parents get the two subject areas mixed up. Be aware
that Design Graphics is an MDT subject that uses com-
puter Aided Design (CAD) to make images of a technical
nature – like Technical Drawing (car and engine parts,
house designs etc…), but in 3D. Design in Graphic Art
is an Arts subject where boys use Photoshop to create
Graphic Designs. Graphic Designers make advertise-
ments, illustrate comics and children’s books, design cata-
logues and magazines, billboard posters, CD covers and
Fashion Products etc…
Finally, please feel free to contact our Arts team if you re-
quire further information about an Arts subject, thank you
and good luck with your son’s subject choices for 2017.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Students from the Law School, University of Tasmania,
have designed a leadership and law awareness session for
young people and New Town High has been selected as
the school to pilot this initiative. Our Year 10 student
leadership team thoroughly enjoyed the interactive and
informative session recently and in early August some of
our Year 9 students will be offered the opportunity to fur-
ther develop and hone their leadership skills.
NEWS FROM FOOD STUDIES
Welcome to Ms Mary Williams and Ms Kellie-
Anne Anderson who will be taking Mrs Weitnau-
er’s Food Studies classes whilst she is on Long Ser-
vice Leave, travelling in Korea and Japan for the next
five weeks. Welcome back to Mrs Julie Creed who
has returned from a short holiday and thanks goes to
Ms Kate Taylor for teaching her classes. The team
in Food Studies are looking forward to a busy Term
3.
The senior students are busy preparing for their ex-
ams in Food Studies and taking extra care in the pro-
duction and presentation of their recipes. A practical
exam will be held following the theory exam schedule
upon Mrs Weitnauer’s return to school and the prac-
tical exam will be held in the second week of Septem-
ber. This term the theme for the Senior Food Studies
is “Bush Tucker”. Last week the boys had the oppor-
tunity to crack fresh macadamia nuts and show their
skill as master nutcrackers!!! We had a lot of fun in
the class with this challenge!
The Grade 8 classes are focussing on creating food
design challenges, making a Parfait in the coming
weeks. We welcome the second group of Grade 7
classes to their first Semester in this optional class of
Food Studies. Grade 71, 72 73 and 74 have made a
great start, making a tasty Fruit Salad this week. As
the students grow in confidence more detailed reci-
pes will be taught. All school recipes are available on
the Fronter site. Please ask your son what he has
been up to in Food Studies.
