CATALOGUE

Garth Delbridge left school at the age of 14 to accept a saddlery apprenticeship with a local Toowoomba firm of James Rogers and Sons. After completion of a five-year apprenticeship, Garth left the saddlery industry to work as a plant operator with the Main Roads Department, and later as a fireman with the Toowoomba fire brigade.

This time away from the industry was not lost on Garth. He continued saddlery work at home after hours and on weekends. It soon became obvious to Garth and his wife Sandra that they would have to become involved in the industry on a full time basis.

Toowoomba Saddlery was founded in a small tool shed behind their home in Taylor Street, Toowoomba in 1968. In 1969, the business moved into small commercial premises on Anzac Avenue with a view to increasing their manufacturing output for both the wholesale and retail saddlery markets.

To support the growing business in 1973, Garth actively pursued two directions of growth; distributorships and export markets. Following a trip to Singapore in 1973 which proved to be very successful, Toowoomba Saddlery’s business had grown to the point where exclusive agents in 4 countries had been appointed and were now actively exporting to 12 countries on a regular basis.

As Toowoomba Saddlery grew, it became obvious that due to the vast distance of travel required to promote our products an aircraft was the answer. So, in 1979, Toowoomba Saddlery purchased a new Cessna aircraft, followed by Garth obtaining his pilots license, enabling Toowoomba Saddlery to service the outback. Later, this aircraft proved to be too small for the long hauls and a twin engine Beechcraft was purchased. The purchase of an aircraft proved to be an outstanding success in opening markets in remote parts of Australia.

After continued strong growth, Toowoomba Saddlery’s need for larger premises was never more apparent than in 1977, when a new 430 square metre warehouse and factory complex was built in Hill Street Toowoomba. 1991 saw the need for these premises to expand again, to 700 square metres. By 1994, after another period of rapid growth, our present 1500 square metre office and warehouse complex was purchased at 266-268 McDougall

Street, Toowoomba. 2008 Saw the addition of a 600 square metre mezzanine floor at their Toowoomba warehouse for increased storage area. The quest for new products and continuity of supply of established products in the early 1990’s saw Toowoomba Saddlery move into the direct importing of saddlery hardware and saddlery manufacturing products, predominantly from South East Asia. Leather is also imported from the USA, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Hermann Oak Leather Company of St. Louis in USA has appointed Toowoomba Saddlery as their sole distributor for Australia and New Zealand, proudly distributing their very high quality skirting, tooling, latigo and bridle leathers. Today, Toowoomba Saddlery is one of the largest manufacturers of Australian Made saddles and leather strapping, supplying over 1200 stores throughout Australia. We carry one of the largest range of saddlery hardware and saddlery leather in Australia with an annual multi-million dollar turnover.

The success of Toowoomba Saddlery is in no small part due to the progressive attitude, experience and loyalty of the management and staff. This experience is invaluable to the ongoing development of new products and the continuing high standard of products manufactured on a daily basis. Toowoomba Saddlery is now in its 47th year of business.

The Company is solely owned and operated by the Delbridge Family with Garth & Sandra’s son Robert being appointed Managing Director. Robert completed his apprenticeship as a motor mechanic with the local Ford dealership, then joined Toowoomba Saddlery in 1990 and completed a 4 year apprenticeship as a riding saddle maker and has been with the company ever since.

The increasing need for travel to remote locations has seen Robert obtain his pilot’s license to enable him to service customers in remote areas of Australia. Toowoomba Saddlery has distributors of their quality products as far out as Alice Springs, Katherine Kununurra, Derby and Broome.

WE USE AND RECOMMENDWe recommend that you oil your saddle on a regular basis. If the leather dries out you risk decreasing the life of the product. Never use hot water to clean off grime. Use tepid water, saddle soap and a soft cloth. Do regular gear checks on the girth, girth points, stirrup leathers and bridles. Only use a reputable saddler for repairs. We trust that you will have many years of trouble free riding with any of the Toowoomba Saddlery products.

The Schrade (Old Timer) name has been around for over 100 years. Over the years this brand has earned a reputation for toughness and reliability. In 2006 Taylor Cutlery USA purchased the rights to the name and models. The Old Timer knives are now manufactured with modern updated USA Machinery and upgraded components in their factory which is now located in South East Asia. The Steel used in the Old Timer knives is 440C High Carbon Stainless with a Rockwell hardness of 59-60. Taylor cutlery has gone to great extremes to maintain and improve on the quality of their knives. They have their own production control and the finished product is better than ever.

Tanami Tack - Cavesson Noseband

Tanami leather, cavesson with soft padded leather noseband and solid brass, nickel polished hardware.

NOSETANC1

The Tanami Tack® Cavesson not only improves the appearance of the horse’s head, it also offers support to the lower jaw. This allows the horse to relax its jaw as the noseband resists the downward pressure from the bit’s action. A Cavesson can be used to prevent the horse from evading the bit without causing harm.

It also proves valuable in sports such as Campdrafting as it allows for control and accuracy especially when quick movement changes are required. The Cavesson nosebands should be fitted with a margin of two fingers (3cm) between the band and jaw bone and be positioned half way between the mouth corners and projecting cheek bone.

NICKEL PLATED (NP)Nickel coating over malleable iron or zinc die casting for a smooth, finished look. Provides a blueish white finish.

CHROME PLATED (CP)Known for its durability, this finish has a dense, smooth, tough coating of shiny chrome plating (mirror-like) over a base metal.

BRASS PLATED (BP)A thin coating of brass over malleable iron or zinc die casting. Gives the casting a yellow-orange finish and helps reduce oxidation of the base metal. Brass plated hardware tend to be lacquer finished.

SOLID BRASS (SB)Durable, non-rust metal that’s an alloy of copper and zinc. Features a bright gold like appearance.

STAINLESS STEEL (SS)A popular choice because of its strength. Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. It features a grey-white shiny finish. All of our stainless steel hardware is polished.

The leather of your new saddle will need an initial oil in order to become soft & pliable. Rough-out and smooth-out leather can be oiled in exactly the same way. We recommend you oil your saddle regularly, using a liquid saddle dressing like Joseph Lyddy Neatsfoot Oil, or Oakwood Leather Oil. It can be poured onto the leather and squirted into all the hard to reach places. If the leather dries out, you risk decreasing the life of the product.

Scrub with warm (not boiling) soapy water and a brush. Rinse well with clean water. Wash the felt lining in the same way. Allow your saddle to dry in a well ventilated shaded area - NOT in direct sunlight - The sun will shrink and harden the leather. When dry, you can brush your rough-out saddle with a wire brush to give it new life. When completely dry, you can re-oil / dress your saddle.

Equi-Fit® Saddle Trees have been manufactured in the USA since 1848. The business is now in its 5th generation and is still 100% owned by the Steele family. Toowoomba Saddlery has an excellent business and personal relationship with the Steele family. We visit their plant in Nashville USA to discuss the ongoing development and the quality of the saddle trees for the Australian market. Not only does Toowoomba Saddlery sell the Equi-Fit® saddle trees, we put these saddle trees into our regular production of the Toowoomba Saddlery branded saddles which are sold in Australia and also exported internationally.


The correct cut pieces are then carefully placed in their corresponding pattern jig’s to ensure uniformity

The Apollo Plus series is the next generation in coated webbing available. This is a quality Australian Made Leatherite product. The core of this webbing is made from a tightly woven polyester and then coated with a satin finish Thermoplastic Elastomeric compound to produce this unique webbing. This webbing has a crease line down each side to provide that leather look. The Apollo Plus thickness is 3.0mm. This webbing retains its flexibility over a large temperature range and has increased abrasion resistance and is UV Stabilized and has increased crack & tear resistance while maintaining a leather like feel (not plastic).

Ideal for the manufacture of Stirrup leathers, Girth points, Dog collars, leads and much more. The double weave inner (which gives greater eye tear resistance), the increased abrasion resistance, the increased crack & tear resistance and the unique Leather like finish make this webbing suited for most applications where a heavy-duty web
