MOJO MOJO is a text-based service. The church office wanted a more efficient way to share information that didn’t rely on checking your email. When we need to dispense information quickly, we can send a single text that every person, who has signed up, will receive. This will help when we have last-minute changes in worship, or if we have time-sensitive updates that need to be shared. If you would like to be added to this system, you must request to be a part of it. There are cards in our foyer or you can call the church office.

From the Preacher’s Desk
“Partiality?”
A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco.
“Mom and Dad, I’m coming home, but I’ve a favor to ask. I have a friend I’d like to bring home with me.”
“Sure,” they replied. “We’d love to meet him.”
“There’s something you should know,” the son continued. “He was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us.”
“I’m sorry to hear that, Son. Maybe we can help find him somewhere to live.”
“No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us.”
“Son,” said the father, “you don’t know what you’re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden to us. We have our own lives to live, and we can’t let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come on home and forget about this guy. He’ll find a way to live on his own.”
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son died after falling from a building, they were told. The police
believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they did not know, their son had only one arm and one leg.
The parents in this story are not unlike many of us. We like to deal with people that make us comfortable and ignore those who look like they might be an inconvenience. It’s not uncommon for us to see someone of a particular race or wealth status and selfishly ignore them. What we
are doing is showing partiality, something that God does not like. Acts 10:34-35 says, “Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.”
Have you ever ignored someone or chosen not to help someone just because of what they looked like? Why do we sometimes show partiality? I will be the first to admit that I have been guilty of this sin; however, I know I’m not alone. We are a society of people who like convenience. Often, we make decisions based on what is most convenient for us at that exact moment. We choose to show partiality because certain people are just easier to deal with. The problem? This selfish attitude has caused many to ignore those who are really in need.
What is our duty as Christians? 1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in
the Lord.” We are commanded to “abound in the work of the Lord,” in other words we are commanded to do the Will of God. Throughout the scriptures, we see the importance in preaching and teaching God’s Truth. It is our command, our great commission to take the Word of God and share it with the world. What we are NOT commanded to do is to show partiality for whatever reason. Everyone deserves the Word of God regardless of who they are, what they look like, or what lives they live. The saddest thing I’ve ever seen is a Christian who refused to teach the Bible because they “assumed” the other person wouldn’t accept it. Our job is not to predetermine who will obey the Word or not. Our job is to teach the truth to all people and let God work on their hearts. 1 Corinthians 3:6, “I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.” David Olmos
Prepare for a scare! On Friday, October 29, we will be having our Spooky Night youth event, where some other local area churches will be bringing their youth groups for a
time of fun, fellowship, and frights! The party starts at 6:30 p.m. and goes until 9:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Please come speak with me if you would like to be one of our hosts for the progressive dinner this year. It will take place on Friday, December 17. Thank you in advance.
