SUMMIT VIEWS MARCH 2021 A MESSAGE FROM BRIAN March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers. Spring is right around the corner and we are all looking forward to warmer weather. Thank YOU to all of our new members through the month of February. There has been a buzz in the gym over the past few weeks and I love the energy and enthusiasm that our members bring to the Club. Please continue to be respectful of our community and members by wiping down your equipment, wearing a mask covering your nose and mouth while in the facility, and maintaining physical distance whenever possible. Remember, there are 5 main components of personal health: physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual. These dimensions of health and wellness are all equally important but sometimes in the gym we tend to focus solely on physical health (diet and exercise). You may have noticed a number of new nutrition products available for purchase at the front desk. We hope these products serve as a cleaner alternative to help fuel your gym activities and help you achieve the results you desire. In March, we will be partnering with NAU’s Behavioral Health program to offer additional resources and education for improving the emotional, social, and intellectual dimensions of health. At Summit, we are focused on fitness but serious about ALL aspects of your health. Every Monday at 8 AM in March, we will be covering a different topic: 3/8: Myths of Aging (Part 1), 3/15: Myths of Aging (Part 2), 3/22: Scams - Identification and Prevention, and 3/29: Coping with the Challenges of COVID. In addition, we will be offering Wednesday evening courses at 6 PM: 3/3 Body Image Matters, 3/10: Coping with Anxiety, and 3/24: Power of Positive Thinking. These classes will be both in-person and on Zoom so please check out our new wellness offerings. Remember, these resources are available to members of Summit Fitness FREE OF CHARGE! In other BIG NEWS, Summit Fitness will be re-opening our Kids Zone beginning Monday, April 5 th . FUSD will begin phased return to in-person learning in March and we look forward to serving your childcare needs beginning in April. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we determine the safest way to deliver our childcare services. We look forward to the entire family returning to the Summit and will provide additional details as we get closer to April! EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Hi! I’m Wendy, the yoga teacher for the Monday/Wednesday 9am All Levels class. I started practicing yoga over 20 years ago on a rainy Sunday afternoon and I was hooked immediately. Becoming a registered yoga teacher was always part of the plan. As a (now retired) nurse practitioner, I know how yoga benefits strength, mobility and balance as we age. I’ve been at Summit since the summer of 2016 when I retired from Campus Health Services at NAU.

I’ve lived in Flagstaff for over 25 years, and this is truly home. It’s the place (and home) I’ve lived in the longest in my entire life. A Wisconsin girl by birth, I’ve lived in the Philippines, Washington and California before moving here in 1995.

In my non-yoga time, I’m the team leader for the Flagstaff Team of Days for Girls International. We make and distribute menstrual hygiene products to girls and women around the work and our team has sent over 1000 kits into the world since we started. I’m also an avid quilter and quilting teacher. And the light of my life is being the grandmother of 7-year-old twins who live in Ogden UT. I visit as often as I can!

NOTE FROM MAYALA

There are plenty of complicated and confusing ways to get healthy and more diet plans and programs out there than stars in the sky and what most of them boil down to is a pretty simple idea that we need to take care of our bodies by paying attention to what we put in them. There are three key factors to consider for optimizing your health: sleep, hydration, and nutrition. I’ll start with the simplest and easiest one, hydration.

Hydration is one of the low hanging fruits of a healthy foundation and yet a casual statistic states that 99% of Americans are dehydrated. Yet, when I mention drinking enough water to clients, they immediately ask if it is possible to over-hydrate (hyperhydration) because overhydration gets far more press than proper hydration and yet the dehydration statistic still stands. You tell me if you think drinking too much water is common. I can think of 2 people I know who drink enough water while working out besides me, that’s pretty darn sad considering the benefits of proper hydration. Your body requires you to replace fluid for every metabolic process and supports detoxification through sweating, breathing, and elimination. If you have a cold, you can bet your system will recover faster if you are fully hydrated! Proper fluid balance throughout your fascia, blood, muscles, spinal column, joints, ligaments, tendons, digestion, and more are reliant on having enough fluid to do the job. Simply put, your body functions very poorly when you don’t drink enough water. For instance, dehydration inhibits the delivery of testosterone and HGH (human growth hormone) to the cell, so even if you’re lifting weights and exercising to boost your testosterone, you’re cancelling out much of the benefit due to dehydration. Testosterone is essential in maintaining muscle mass and energy levels in both men and women, while HGH supports healthy cellular growth and turnover. We want to keep our HGH high as we get older because it helps to maintain, build, and repair healthy tissue and the simplest, cheapest, easiest way to do that is by drinking your water!

One half ounce of filtered water per pound of body weight is a good start. Invest in a filtration system and a stainless-steel water bottle. Do not let that water bottle out of your sight all day, every day! Remember that "Drinking Water" you buy in plastic bottles from the grocery store is actually tap water. Unless specifically stated as "Spring Water" that bottle of water you purchased is just tap water, resplendent with all the pollutants and goodies your garden hose water contains. Not only that but the BPA/BPS bottle itself contains a healthy dose of hormone manipulating xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are synthetic estrogen molecules that confuse your body's hormone balance and cause everything from weight gain and mental health issues to cancer and gynecomastia (man boobs). A filtration system is worth it when you consider the long-term impact of xenoestrogens and tap water contaminants. Get a multistage filter and do some research or invest in some 5-gallon jugs and fill up with RO (reverse osmosis) water at the grocery store. Just like any new habit, it will take a bit of effort initially but the pay-off will last a lifetime and ideally a long healthy lifetime at that!

Zesty Fennel Salad Despite being one of the most overlooked vegetables, fennel is delicious cooked or raw! I make this salad at least once a week and serve it with anything and everything from burgers and smoked meats to seafood and roasted veggies. Fennel has a very mild, sweet flavor and also happens to be a digestive aid. The crunchy texture of this dish lends a bright and punchy note to whatever it accompanies.

INGREDIENTS: 2 bulbs Fennel 1 orange 1/2 lemon 1/8 teaspoon cayenne 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil Option for green olives, halved and/or toasted almond slivers. DIRECTIONS:

Slice fennel as thinly as possible. Use a mandolin for this if you prefer but please remember to use the guard if you do! Zest the orange and half the lemon with a Micro-plane zester. Combine the fennel, zest, juice of the orange and half lemon in a medium mixing bowl and toss with the cayenne, salt, and olive oil. Kneed with your hands to break down the fennel bulbs a bit.

Serve chilled as a side, in a salad, or with pork or fish.
