The Centres for Research-based InnovationThe Centres for Research-based Innovation are to develop expertise in fields of importance for innovation and value creation.

Through long-term research conducted in close collaboration between research-performing companies and prominent research groups, the SFI centres are to enhance technology transfer, internationalisationand researcher training.

The scientific merit of the research must be of high international caliber. The SFI centres may receive support for a total of eight years (5+3 years)

Industrial biotechnologyentails the industrial application of modern biotechnological methods, enzymes andmicroorganisms for the production of a diverse range of commodities, includingchemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and feed ingredients, detergents, textiles, energy andmaterials.

"Industrial biotechnology is globally anticipated to become a major driver for establishing a sorely needed sustainable bioeconomy"

A sustainable value creation can be obtained by :• Improved processes

• Energy, efficacy, reduced waste, reduced use of chemicals

• Improved toolbox (e.genzymes)

• Upgrading/tailoring of products

• Novel (high value) products
