PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE- Les Boyd

January is here and it’s time for the much discussed grill renovation. We know that the construction will disrupt a few routines but there is no way to do renovation work without disruption. When the work is complete we’ll enjoy the renovated space for decades and decades. Please be patient and remember that the Club’s main entrance and driveway will be used as the construction entrance and will be closed to traffic. The driveway in front of the grill will also be full of construction materials and construction equipment in motion. You will not be able to safely walk from the Grill parking lot to the golf shop along the driveway. Keep that in

mind as you choose where to park.

I’m excited about getting this project started, getting it complete, and then enjoying the benefit for many, many years.

MANAGER’S MESSAGE- Anthony Chelena

The Grill renovation is underway and I’m thinking about how fortunate we are to have two clubhouses. Champion Hills is renovating again- everything is closed. Cummings Cove is renovating- everything is closed. Two years ago Greenville Country Club renovated (tore everything down) and everything was closed for 18 months. It’s good to be Hendersonville Country Club!

The Grill employees who cooked and served you breakfast and lunch in December will be cooking and serving you breakfast and lunch in January in the Main Clubhouse. It’ll be the same food (a smaller menu) at the same prices, but at a different table and on a different plate, and the server will have walked a longer walk from the kitchen. Prime Rib will be featured at the Main Clubhouse every Thursday night. It’ll be the same quality beef, cooked by the same grill employee and at the same price charged at the Grill.

Members often ask what we do with leftover food from buffets. We are pretty good at preventing food waste, but naturally there is some. A great deal of leftover food becomes an employee meal served later in the week. But the holiday season is different. There is just so much food in motion in the Club’s kitchen. For instance on one Friday in December we served lunch to 500 people in the Main Clubhouse and followed that with dinner for 150 people. And that was just one day in a month of busy days.

In late November, Chef Steve and I took a tour of the Hendersonville Rescue Mission to learn about their feeding program. We visited with Anthony McMinn and Tim Jones (fantastic people!) as we toured the dormitories, dining area and kitchen. When Steve and I returned to the Club we purchased color coded food storage containers which we now use to transport leftover food to the Rescue Mission. We are still going to be very careful to avoid waste. But from now on, some food which formerly ended up wasted, will feed hungry people at the Rescue Mission.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who contributed to the Club’s Employee Holiday Fund. I wish each of you could see our employees’ faces on the day I hand out these checks. Our employees are grateful for their jobs and for the meaningful holiday gift.

Remember when you used to be able to mail a letter or a bill and expect it to be delivered across town in one or two days? Those days are gone. If we mail Club statements on the 3rd and they don’t get to your mailbox until the 10th, you don’t have much time to get your payment back to us by the due date on the 15th. Did you know that you can pay your Club bill through ACH auto-draft? We’ll still mail you a statement and you have until the 15th to review your charges before the auto-draft pays your statement. This is particularly popular to our Members who travel during the month. Call Rita at 692-2261 extension 114 to set it up.

MAIN CLUBHOUSE- Dayna Kelsey

The Clubhouse Team and I would to start this year with a special thank you to everyone who contributed to the Employee Holiday Fund. Your generosity is

very much appreciated. We had a wonderful 2018 and are looking forward to an even better 2019!

Did you know 2019 is the Year of the Pig? Last year Chef Steve and I attended Las Vegas for a conference during the Chinese New Year. We were overwhelmed by the beautiful decorations in every casino paying tribute to the holiday and were inspired to create our own party this year at the club! We hope you will join us for a delicious Chinese buffet, music and festive decorations while we celebrate the Year of the Pig on Saturday, February 2nd.

WINE OF THE MONTHI’m sure many have you noticed that California wines have gone up in price dramatically recently. Unfortunately, due to the droughts and numerous fires in California the last several years I don’t think we will be finding as many great “value wines” from California for awhile. With that being said this year the Clubhouse will be focusing on a wine from a different country each month, allowing us to explore different regions and discover great new wines!

Schroeder Family Vineyards, Sarus Select, Pinot Noir, Patagonia Argentina $6 Glass

The vineyards of Familia Schroeder sit in the San Patricio del Chanar valley, a new region in Patagonia. Light stony soils, generous streams of pure melt-water, intense sunlight and a substantial diurnal temperature difference all contribute to make this the next important wine region to emerge from Argentina.

The winery of Familia Schroeder is very unique; it is the home of an excavation site that found the Neuquén Province’s first fossils of the Titanosaur known as the Aeolosaurus. Beyond providing a tourist attraction and an eponym for the Saurus wines, it is a testament to the length of time the soil that these vines call home have been untouched and pure.

GRILL-Eve Miller

Thank you for bearing with us as we transition from the Grill as we have known it, to the Grill at the Clubhouse and then finally our new building this spring. As with all things in life, some changes come easily and others are harder to for us to adjust to as they ask us to bend more and change routines and rituals that are ingrained parts of our daily living. Those of us both at the Grill and Clubhouse are practicing the virtues of patience, flexibility and communication to do our best to ensure that we offer the best experience we can to you, our members, as we move into this time of change.

As you aware, the Grill will not be offering a dinner service Monday and Tuesday nights, but we will not lose Prime Rib Night altogether because it is moving up to the Clubhouse to be the Thursday Night Dinner Special. Also, in honor of Harry Barnjum, we will be offering Brunswick Stew for the entire month of January, Monday-Saturday from 11:00am-3:00pm on the Grill Menu. It will be a great way to memorialize Harry and the 23 years he shared with the Club.

We invite you to come enjoy your Grill favorites for breakfast and lunch up at the Clubhouse, Monday-Saturday and thank you for your patience as the Grill transitions in 2019.

GOLF NEWS- Ben Balentine

Now that the holiday season is over and we are counting the pounds we put on over the past five or six weeks, it’s time to turn our attention to getting into shape for golf in the spring! The best way to do this is not to randomly exercise, but rather to employ the best specific exercises.

Stretching has been proven to produce great results for golf fitness. As we get older we lose the ability to make a full shoulder turning motion, which in turn causes a loss in distance and a creeping up of the handicap. If you would like more information on some effective stretching exercises please give me a call or come by the golf shop.

The golf staff would like to thank the members for your support over the past year. We had a good year in merchandise sales and with your continued support we can make 2019 even better. Please remember that the club gives you a 20% discount on all merchandise. This allows us to sell quality merchandise at a fair and reasonable price. We encourage you to compare our prices on clubs and golf balls before shopping elsewhere. Don’t forget! Your gift certificates must be used by April 30, 2019.

We also would like to thank our members for their generous gifts to the employee Christmas fund. You have enabled us to give our families a much bigger and better Christmas. Happy New Year to all! Please check out the 2019 Tournament Schedule and mark your calendar for the upcoming events you plan to play in.

GOLF TIPS- Jay King

Playing during the winter months can be difficult due to the cold weather. A great way to still get out there and work on your golf game is to make sure you are dressed properly. If you wear too many layers your swing might feel constricted. I believe the best way to stay warm and be able to swing properly is to wear a thermal base layer shirt. Footjoy makes a wonderful thermal base layer shirt which can be worn underneath your outer layer. It is lightweight but snug to your body, allowing your body heat to keep you warm and also allowing you to swing freely.

TENNIS-Pam Cloer

December has closed out 2018 with some cold weather and almost 20 inches of snow. On December 8 and 9, we here in the tennis department did not see much play on our courts. Let’s hope January is bit better, weather-wise, for tennis.

January and February are great times to tune up your equipment. Have your racquet restrung and re-gripped to be ready for the 2019 tennis season. It is recommended to have your racquet strung as many times in a year as you play in a week. If you play 3 times a week it is

recommended that you restring 1-3 times a year. You will be able to tell the difference with fresh strings.

MEMBERSHIP-Sarah Cioffi

I cannot thank the Membership enough for making my transition to HCC this year so wonderful. I can’t say enough good things about everyone here and the generosity that was shown through your contributions to the Holiday Employee Fund. It certainly made our holiday a little brighter this year.

I’m looking forward to more good times spent with friends and family, memories being made in the Clubhouse, on the golf course and on the tennis courts as well as successful growth in 2019.
