Fort Vancouver Pipe Band was founded in 2000 by Charlie Anderson, who served as the first pipe major, and Bob Pauley. The name pays tribute not only to the band’s host city, but incorporates the entire Pacific Northwest as origi-nally represented by the Hudson Bay Company’s Fort Vancouver. The band, which wears the Washing-ton State tartan, is the official pipe band of “America’s Vancouver”. The “fort” portion of the band’s logo is copied, with permission, from the logo of the City of Vancouver. The band strives to serve the region, especially mili-tary organizations, and regularly appears at civic and memorial functions, parades, Celtic activities, highland

A non-competitive band, FVPB members play for enjoy-ment and camaraderie. Membership is open to anyone who can play one of the instruments or is willing to learn (the band can provide instruction).

The Band is led by Pipe Major Warren D. McAlpine and Drum Sergeant Pete Woodall.

Gillies, Lentz and Clan Macleay Featured at January Gathering

Drum Major Geordie Patterson opened the January OPS gathering by announcing the guest ensemble of the month, the Clan MacLeay Pipe Band. Led by Pipe Major Michael Hubbard and Drum Corporal Skip Ad-ams, the band marched in with the 4/4 march “At Long Last”. The recital then shifted to an educational focus. Michael gave a brief talk about time signatures and then the band played a 3/4 march “Ariogan”. An example of “idiom” or phrasing in mu-sic was presented after the audience was given an explanation about this musical factor. The band played “Star of the County Down”, first as a slow air in 4/4 time and then again in 6/8 time. The band finished with the hornpipe “Donald MacLeod” set in a march tempo.

Tom Peralta, announcer for the evening, intro-duced Colin Lentz as the OPS “Local Hero of the Month”. Colin came in playing the 6/4 march “Farewell to Nigg”. Pio-baireachd fans then had the opportunity to hear Colin play the ground and first variation of “The Battle of the Pass of Crief”. He finished his perfor-mance with an MSR. The featured soloist was Richard Gillies, who filled in as a substitute for Jori Chisholm. Richard played an entire piobaireachd, “MacLeod’s Salute”, interspersing light music in between the variations in a unique per-formance. Following this opening act, Richard played a variety of light music and closed with his mother’s favorite tune “Flower of Scotland”.

Dan DelMain began learning the highland bagpipe at age 13 in Portland, Ore. After three years of master-ing the basic movements and learning the beginner bagpipe tunes, he joined the Sir James McDonald Pipe Band in 1997. During his four years with the band, he won numerous top prizes in both band and solo competitions. After moving to San Francisco for college in 2001, he joined Grade III Prince Charles Pipe Band. In 2003, the band won the Grade III World Championship Pipe Band competition in Glasgow, Scotland. Currently, Dan is a member of Portland Metro Pipe Band, a band he helped create in 2006. In addition to playing with the band, Dan com-petes in Grade II solo competitions both in Portland and abroad. When he is not piping for prizes, he performs all over Oregon and Southwest Washington for weddings, wakes and parties.
