used to apply electrical measurement techniquesto the measurement of mechanical quantities. As their name indicates, they areused for the measurement of strain. As a technical term, strain is comprisedof tensile and compressive strain, distinguished by a positive or negative sign.Thus, strain gauges can be used to detect expansion as well as contraction.

The strain of a body is caused by an external influence or an internal effect.Strain can be caused by forces, pressures, moments, heat, structural changesof the material and the like. If certain conditions are fulfilled, the amount or thevalue of the influencing quantity can be derived from the measured strain value.In experimental stress analysis, this feature is widely exploited. Experimentalstress analysis uses the strain values measured on the surface of a specimenor structural part to determine the stress in the material and also to predict itssafety and endurance. Special transducers can be designed for themeasurement of forces or other derived quantities, e.g., moments, pressures,accelerations, displacements, vibrations and others. The transducer generallycontains a pressure-sensitive diaphragm with strain gauges bonded to it.

STRAIN GAUGEDIMENSIONSThe active grid length, in the case of foilgauges, is the net grid length without thetabs, and includes the return loops ofthe wire gauges.

Carrier dimensions are designed byOMEGA for optimum function of thestrain gauge.

STRAIN GAUGERESISTANCEThe resistance of a strain gauge isdefined as the electrical resistancemeasured between the two metalribbons or contact areas intended forthe connection of measurement cables.The range covers strain gauges withnominal resistances of 120, 350, 600and 700 ohms.

GAUGE FACTOR(STRAIN SENSITIVITY)The strain sensitivity k of a strain gaugeis the proportionality factor between therelative change of the resistance.

Strain sensitivity is a figure withoutdimension and is generally calledgauge factor.

The gauge factor of each production lotis determined by sample measurementand is given on each package as thenominal value with its tolerance.

REFERENCE TEMPERATUREThe reference temperature is theambient temperature for which thetechnical data concerning a straingauge are valid, unless temperatureranges are given.

The technical data quoted for strain

gauges are based on a referencetemperature of 23C.

TEMPERATURECHARACTERISTICSTemperature-dependent changes inspecific strain gauge grid resistanceoccur in the applied gauge owing to thelinear thermal expansion of the grid andspecimen materials. These resistancechanges appear to be mechanical strainin the specimen. The representation ofapparent strain as a function of

temperature is called the temperaturecharacteristic of the strain gaugeapplication.

In order to keep apparent strain throughtemperature changes as small aspossible, each strain gauge is matchedduring production to a certain linearthermal expansion coefficient. OMEGAoffers strain gauges with temperaturecharacteristics matched to ferritic steeland aluminium.

SERVICE TEMPERATURE

RANGEThe service temperature range is therange of ambient temperature whereinthe use of a strain gauge is possiblewithout permanent change in themeasurement properties. Servicetemperature ranges are different,whether static or dynamic values areto be sensed.

MAXIMUM PERMITTEDRMS BRIDGE ENERGISINGVOLTAGEThe maximum values quoted arepermitted only for appropriateapplication on materials with goodconduction (e.g., steel of sufficientthickness) if room temperature is notexceeded. In other cases, temperaturerise in the measuring grid area may leadto measurement error. Measurement onplastics and other materials with badthermal conduction requires reductionof the energising voltage or of the dutycycle (pulsed operation).
