Results will vary depending upon the substrate material and the cleaner used. Acrylics, vinyls, and ABS plastics, for ex- ample, are more likely to be affected by stronger cleaners while metal, laminates, glass, and polyethylene are more durable substrates.
Worker Safety The chemical manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheet
(MSDS), based upon the cleaner’s chemical make-up, can be instrumental in determining a chemical’s impact on user health.
In addition to data on chemical ingredients, exposure limits, as well as toxicity, flammability, and reactivity levels on the haz- ard rating, this document also provides emergency first-aid in- formation and highlights special precautions necessary for the chemical’s handling, storage, and transportation.
In-Line Acceptance After approval on the basis of safety, the cleaner may be in-
troduced to those who will ultimately use it - the in-line pro- duction worker. Of vital concern to all is the issue of odor. In this age of increased concern for employee well-being, any prod- uct that disrupts productivity, lowers morale, or increases absenteeism will ultimately be dismi’ssed.
Process Requirements These refer to the outcome desired and the. equipment nec-
essary to achieve it. Some concerns include drying time, rinsing demands, flammability, and changes in equipment or process.
No substitute cleaner evaporates as quickly as those chemi- cals being banned; and most, including saponifiers, require a final rinse. A wet product can result in substrate erosion, com- ponent damage, rust, andlor over-cleaning.
Whenever a flammable substance is introduced to the cleaning process, closed-loop, explosion-proof equipment is recommended.
Cost: Time and Money Every company’s goal is to integrate a new cleaning solution
with the old cleaning system without modification. But finding a direct replacement that works outright is the exception, not the rule. More often than not, selecting and implementing a new clean- ing agent requires significant investment in both time and money.
