Dear Parents / Caregivers
Tēnā koutou, kia ora koutou katoa.
Welcome back to Term 2! Hopefully you were able to enjoy some good whānau time together
over the Easter break and school holidays. While the students have been away teachers have
been preparing plans for the new term and we have an exciting ten weeks of learning ahead.
Last term finished with a bang with our annual
Arts Week and the Great Shave Off. Thank you
to all those who supported our school team and
Leukaemia & Blood Cancer NZ.
It was fantastic to surpass our $1000 target
($1564 total raised!) and have a lot of fun along
the way. Well done to Ollie Nelson and Malachy
Cleland for initiating and leading this effort.
Across the school students and teachers are exploring the important topic of ‘Keeping Ourselves
Safe (KOS)’ during the first three weeks of this term. Constable Maire Proud joined us on Monday
night to answer questions and outline the programme for parents at the information evening.
Remember to talk to your child about what they are learning as we work our way through this
subject.
Coming up...
Following yesterday’s amazing short free performance from the Zirka Circus acrobats, we are
really looking forward to ‘Puss in Boots: Pet Detective’ by the NZ Playhouse actors.
After KOS, student learning will move onto a Science focus including topics such as Magnetism and
the Respiratory System alongside classroom literacy and numeracy programmes.
Please join us if you can on May 15 for the Tackling Technology Parent Evening (see inside) . This
will be a really worthwhile discussion / presentation on an important topic.
Have a great week!

Zirka Circus
Yesterday we were lucky enough to have an amazing free
performance from three of the Zirka Circus acrobats. Aged
11, 12, and 13 the three young Chinese acrobats performed
incredible feats of dexterity, balance and strength.
Coming home with this week’s Newsletter is a flier for the
circus including a discount voucher for tickets. If you are
looking for something special to do with the family this
weekend, check out this fantastic show.
Keeping Ourselves Safe
During the first three weeks of Term 2, all classes in the
school are studying the topic of “Keeping Ourselves Safe”.
This is a Health Curriculum personal safety unit designed
to enable children to learn and apply a range of safety skills
they can use when interacting with others.
The programme, taught by your child’s teacher with help from our local Police Education Officer,
aims to develop and strengthen children’s skills to keep themselves safe
with other people, support and encourage abused children to get help
from caring adults, make teachers and parents more aware of the need to
keep children safe from abuse by adults or other children.
Parents are encouraged to talk with their children about what they have
been learning. This will help reinforce the messages the school is giving,
and support your child to use their new skills with confidence.
Tackling Technology
Parent Information Evening Monday 15th May (7pm in
Hall). Mark this date in your diary. Please join us for a
highly topical, informative, and interesting evening
presentation for parents is about the new skills we need
to help guide our young people as they navigate their
digital world.
Attitude – the youth education division of The Parenting Place – is dedicated to equipping tweens
and teens with the information and skills they need to negotiate adolescence and build meaningful
lives. This presentation will assist parents to get the confidence and skills they need to be
proactive when tackling technology with their children, tweens and teenagers. Topics such as text
bullying, gadget addiction, sexting and online safety will be covered.
Mark the night in your diary and make sure you don’t miss this excellent informative discussion /
presentation. Entry by gold coin / donation.

Dealing with concerns
From time to time you may have a concern or questions that you would like answers to about your child’s learning or
wellbeing. Please don't hesitate to make contact at the earliest point of concern. For classroom concerns or questions, please
speak to your child’s teacher in the first instance. If it is something that they are unable to answer, the teacher will tell you
who is best to ask. If it is something of a more general or serious nature, the Team Leader, Deputy Principal or Principal may
be able to provide the answers.
