stories from the reception centre
Abdullah, 35, fish farmer from Baghdad:
"I was tortured for 20 days. The torturers grinded my ear and the tattoo with my daughter's name was burned. But still I survived. My two cousins who were also captivated were not so lucky: one died and the other one is still missing. Later I was blackmailed when I refused to give money for carrying out illegal actions. Out of revenge my fish pond was filled. My daughters were frightened. Because of their fears they sleep with their trousers on.”
Jassim, 28, taxi driver from Baghdad: ”Militia has taken the power in their own hands. Lots of acts of terror happen and militia captures innocent people to get confessions. I met Abdullah in prison, where we were three years.”
”We are really afraid for our families. We want to bring them here”, men say. Abdullah has a wife and four daughters. Jassim has a wife, two sons and two daughters.
YES IN MY BACKYARD DINNER
THE question is not if you can do it, but how you can do it
It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission
