“The White Man’s Burden” The term “White Man’s Burden” is used to describe the supposed duty of the White race to bring education and Western culture to the non-White inhabitants of other places by means of colonization. It came from the poem “The White Man’s Burden” by Rudyard Kipling. Take a look at the document below: In an interview with a visiting church delegation published in 1903, President William McKinley defends his decision to support the annexation of the Philippines in the wake of the U.S. war in that country. He said the following... When I next realized that the Philippines had dropped into our laps I confess I did not know what to do with them. . . And one night late it came to me this way. . .1) That we could not give them back to Spain- that would be cowardly and dishonorable; 2) that we could not turn them over to France and Germany-our commercial rivals in the Orient- that would be bad business and discreditable; 3) that we not leave them to themselves- they are unfit for self-government-and they would soon have anarchy and misrule over there worse than Spain's wars; and 4) that there was nothing left for us to do but to take them all, and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them, and by God's grace do the very best we could by them, as our fellow-men for whom Christ also died. With your group, think about the following:

What countries appear to have the most influence?

What does the area that a country controls say about it’s power?

Is the United States in a position of power or at a disadvantage?

Raw Materials

Rubber is used to make many materials including tires. As cars became easier and cheaper to manufacture, companies like Ford began outsourcing rubber from countries in which rubber naturally grew. Those countries are highlighted below in green. Henry Ford created a rubber plant in South America called “Fordlandia” to bring the raw materials from rubber trees back to the United States to expand his tire and car production.

However, rubber was not the only natural resource that was desirable to the United States. The US and Europe looked to South America and Africa for their raw materials, since those lands naturally had more raw materials such as oil, metals, silk, and spices.

With your group, think about the following:

Review: What is manifest destiny?

How did the US obtain the Louisiana Purchase?

After accomplishing westward expansion, is the United States’ opportunity for imperialism over? Where else could the US imperialize?

Democracy

The chalkboard reads:"The consent of the governed is a good thing in theory, but very rare in fact... the U.S. must govern its new territories with or without their consent until they can govern themselves."

With your group, think about the following:

How is the United States governed? Will this help the other countries?

What are some potential disadvantages of the United States spreading democracy to other countries?

Does the United States have a duty to spread democracy? Why or why not?
