Early New Orleans
• Louisiana was first discovered by Spanish explorers Alvárez Piñeda in 1519, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca in 1528, and once again by Hernando de Soto in 1541.
• New Orleans was founded by the French in 1718 as Nouvelle-Orléans and Louisiana became a French Colony.
• In 1763, Louisiana was returned to Spanish Rule.
History continued.
• Under Spanish rule, New Orleans suffered two disastrous fires.
• The first, the great New Orleans fire of 1788, destroyed 856 buildings on good Friday, March 21.
• The second destroyed 212 buildings in 1794.
Napoleon sold Louisiana to the United States in 1803 for 15 million dollars.
