Nebraska’s 2015 roster consists of 19 players, making it the third-largest roster in school history and the largest since 2009.

Eight of NU’s 19 players are newcomers (6 freshmen and 2 transfers), tying for the most newcomers under Head Coach Rhonda Revelle (1993-present).

The Husker roster features eight Nebraska natives, tying for the most in-state players since softball became an NCAA sport in 1982.

Rhonda Revelle last carried a roster with eight Nebraska natives in 2009, while the 1990 and 1992 Huskers also featured eight in-state products.

Thirteen players on the NU roster were either a high school or travel ball teammate with at least one fellow Husker.

Six Huskers were named their state’s high school player of the year, representing four different states.

The Huskers who earned state high school player-of-the-year honors include: Alicia Armstrong (Nebraska); Mattie Fowler (Arizona); Kaylan Jablonski (Nebraska); Emily Lockman (California); Cassie McClure (Texas); and Madi Unzicker (Nebraska).

Three of Nebraska’s four pitchers were their state’s high school player of the year, including Jablonski, Lockman and McClure.

Nebraska features four pitchers on its roster, marking the first time since 2009 that NU has four pitchers.

The NU roster features five players who have earned all-conference honors in their careers, with all five gaining recognition every season of their careers.

Those players include three-time All-Atlantic 10 honoree Steph Pasquale (at Temple), two-time All-Big Ten selections Alicia Armstrong and Emily Lockman and 2014 freshmen honorees MJ Knighten (All-Big Ten) and Cassie McClure (All-Big 12 at Texas Tech).

NEBRASKA NOTES3 2015 NEBRASKA SOFTBALL

OFFENSIVE COMPARISON: 2014 TO 2015Nebraska set school records for home runs, total bases, extra-base hits, RBIs and slugging percentage in 2014, while also ranking second all-time in runs and doubles, third in on-base percentage and fourth in batting average.

The Huskers lost their top three statistical hitters from the 2014 lineup, a group that included a pair of two-time All-Americans and Nebraska’s only three all-region hitters. Despite the losses, the Husker offense is enjoying a better start to the season than last year’s decorated group.

• Nebraska’s batting average is .074 higher this season than it was through 15 games last season.

• The Huskers have scored 32 more runs through 15 games this season than they did a year ago.

• The 2014 offense set a school record for RBIs. That offense produced 48 RBIs in its first 15 games, while this year’s lineup has totaled 86 RBIs in its 15 games.

• The 2014 offense set a school record for extra-base hits. Nebraska had 23 extra-base hits through the first 15 games last season, while NU has 33 extra-base hits through the first 15 games this season.

PITCHING POSITIVESWith three new pitchers, the Husker pitching staff has gotten off to a slow start this spring. But the group has been working hard to improve, and some of that improvement could be seen the last time the Huskers took the field at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic two weeks ago.

Nebraska faced five tough opponents at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, a group that entered the weekend with a combined 44-7 record entering the tournament and featured three top-15 teams. Despite the strong opponents, the Huskers’ weekend ERA was its lowest of the first month (5.37). NU’s ERA was 1.51 lower in five games than it was in the first 10 games of the season.

• NU allowed two runs or fewer twice at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic after holding only one of its first 10 opponents to two runs.

• The Huskers faced three top-15 teams at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, and NU held those opponents scoreless in 13 of 17 innings.

• Nebraska shut out San Diego State, marking the first time the Aztecs were shut out in 21 games.

• Nebraska recorded a season-high seven strikeouts vs. No. 10 Tennessee, while holding the Vols to two runs, their second-fewest runs in 18 games this season.

• The Huskers surrendered 15 walks in five games (3.0 per game) after allowing 45 walks in their first 10 games (4.5 per game).

• Nebraska allowed seven extra-base hits in five games (1.4 per game), after giving up 34 extra-base hits over the first 10 games (3.4 per game).

• NU held three of its five opponents to five or fewer hits.

• Emily Lockman posted Nebraska’s first shutout of the season against San Diego State, then earned a victory over No. 10 Tennessee the next day.

• Cassie McClure was outstanding in two relief outings against No. 14 LSU and No. 10 Tennessee on Feb. 21. McClure threw 4.1 perfect innings against the Tigers, then tossed 2.2 scoreless innings while earning the save in the Huskers’ upset of Tennessee. On the day, McClure tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and one walk while facing one batter over the minimum.

• On the weekend, McClure posted a 1.40 ERA in 10.0 innings, registering six strikeouts and holding opposing hitters to a .143 average.

HUSKERS BEAT FIRST RANKED TEAMNebraska earned its first victory over a ranked opponent this season when the Huskers upset No. 10 Tennessee, 5-2, on Feb. 21. Junior Kiki Stokes homered twice and drove in three runs in the victory, with junior Emily Lockman earning the win and sophomore Cassie McClure picking up the save.

• Nebraska defeated a top-10 opponent in February for the third time in five seasons.

• Lockman earned her fourth career victory over a top-10 team and her sixth career win vs. a ranked opponent.

• NU is 1-4 vs. ranked teams and 1-2 vs. top-10 teams.

KNIGHTEN POSTS BIG WEEKENDSophomore MJ Knighten enjoyed a strong homecoming two weeks ago at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in her home state of California.

• Knighten batted .500 (7-for-14) at the tournament with a pair of triples and six RBIs.

• Knighten set a career high with four hits as part of a 4-for-4 effort against Oregon State on Feb. 22.

• Her four-hit game was the 50th four-hit game in the history of Nebraska softball.

• Knighten matched her career total with two triples in five games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

• Knighten matched her career high of three RBIs against both San Diego State and Oregon State. She also tied her career high by scoring two runs vs. the Beavers.

NU TOSSES COMBINED NO-HITTERA pair of newcomers teamed up to throw just the second combined no-hitter in Nebraska history on Feb. 7 against Montana. Freshman Kaylan Jablonski made her first career start and threw the first 3.0 innings of the six-inning no-hitter, while sophomore Cassie McClure closed out the final 3.0 innings and earned the win.

• The no-hitter was the 37th in program history.

• The no-hitter occurred in the third game of the season, making it the second-earliest no-hitter in school history.

• It was only the second combined no-hitter in Nebraska history and the first since All-Americans Leigh Ann Walker and Jenny Voss combined on a seven-inning no-hitter against Kansas on May 13, 1999.

• Despite throwing a no-hitter, Nebraska allowed four runs (two earned). The Grizzlies scored twice on RBI ground outs and twice on wild pitches.

• Although not a solo effort, Jablonski became just the sixth Husker freshman pitcher to be involved in a no-hitter.

ARMSTRONG ‘BACK’ IN ACTIONFollowing offseason back surgery, junior Alicia Armstrong missed Nebraska’s fall exhibition season. She has returned this season, showing no ill effects from her offseason surgery.

• Armstrong hit .625 (10-for-16) in the opening weekend with three home runs and nine RBIs. She is batting .435 through the first month of the season with three home runs, 12 RBIs, a .674 slugging percentage and .527 on-base percentage.

• Armstrong ranks eighth in the Big Ten in average.

• Armstrong produced her second career two-homer game against New Mexico State in the second game of the year.

HUSKERS HOPE FOR POTENT BATTERYNebraska has featured an All-America battery each of the last two seasons, highlighted by two-time All-America pitcher Tatum Edwards and her twin sister Taylor, the 2014 Division I Catcher of the Year and a two-time All-American.

On paper, NU will again boast one of the nation’s top batteries entering this season. Junior right-hander Emily Lockman returns after earning first-team all-region honors in 2013 and 2014. Senior Steph Pasquale was a third-team All-America catcher at Temple in 2013, and she is also a two-time, first-team all-region performer.

RETURNING ALL-AMERICA CATCHERS• Annie Aldrete, So., Tennessee• Lexie Elkins, Jr., Louisiana• Amber Freeman, Sr., Arizona State• Steph Pasquale, Sr., Nebraska

LOCKMAN LOOKS TO BUILD ON SUCCESSJunior right-hander Emily Lockman, Nebraska’s lone returning pitcher, has been one of the nation’s top pitchers the past two seasons. Although she has struggled this season, Lockman has proven ability in the circle.

• Lockman owns seven victories over ranked opponents in her career, including a victory over No. 10 Tennessee this season. As a freshman, Lockman earned a complete-game victory at No. 3 Oregon in the NCAA Super Regional championship game. As a sophomore, she earned the win at No. 14 Missouri in the 2014 NCAA Regional final.

• Lockman is one of only four pitchers nationally who earned first-team all-region recognition in both 2013 and 2014. Lockman joins James Madison’s Jailyn Ford as the only juniors among that quartet.

• Lockman is also the first Husker to earn first-team all-region recognition as both a freshman and a sophomore.

• Lockman is the fourth NU pitcher to enter her junior year as a two-time all-conference honoree, and the previous three all ended their careers as All-Americans.

• Lockman’s 1.93 career ERA entering 2015 ranked 22nd nationally among all 2015 pitchers who had thrown at least 200.0 innings. Among pitchers from a Power Five conference (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC), Lockman’s ERA was the fourth-lowest.

PASQUALE AMONG NATION’S TOP HITTERSSenior Steph Pasquale has been one of the nation’s most productive hitters in her career. Pasquale starred at Temple from 2011 to 2015, missing all but 12 games last season. She earned a medical hardship for the 2014 season and was granted a fifth year of eligibility. Pasquale transferred to Nebraska after Temple cut softball.

• At Temple, Pasquale was a three-time all-conference performer, a two-time all-region selection and a 2013 third-team All-American.

• Pasquale was named to both the 2014 and 2015 USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List. She was one of 12 players nationally named to both the 2014 and 2015 watch lists.

• In her last full season in 2013, Pasquale batted .465 with 21 doubles, 15 homers and 80 RBIs. She led the nation in RBIs per game and was also the nation’s toughest player to strike out, fanning only three times in 209 plate appearances (187 at bats).

PASQUALE AMONG ALL ACTIVE DIVISION I HITTERS• Doubles: 8th (47)• RBIs: 13th (155)

BIG INNINGS FOR BIG REDNebraska has been prone to big offensive innings this season, scoring multiple runs in an inning 21 times in 15 games.

• The Huskers have scored in a total of 35 innings this season. When NU scores in an inning, 60 percent of the time it scores at least one more run in that inning.
