THE DRAINAGE HUB While some confusion and upheaval has

surround the recent Private Sewer Transfer from individual ownership to Water Company control, a new Facebook-style website is helping drainage professionals connect on key issues.

Transfer of privately-owned drains and sewers is bringing previously disparate stakeholders into closer contact than ever. But drainage contractors, WaSCs (Water and Sewerage Companies), insurers, housing associations and local authorities share a problem; they are all uncertain about how they will work together to resolve issues under the new regime.

After Defra released its guidance on transfer, WaterUK created its own guidelines. Legal and policy advisor David Strang said: “Defra’s guidance is not user-friendly, and the Government has made it clear that, ‘there won’t be statutory guidance, basically ever’. WaterUK’s aim was, he said, to publish something more helpful.”

Ofwat has released its own guidance too, focused on its role, which is to determine appeals from affected parties.

Local authorities, meanwhile, face confusion around their roles and legal powers over WaSCs. A survey by UK Drainage Protocol found that 44% of EHPs believe they can serve statutory nuisance notices on transferred systems if a serious defect remains unresolved by WaSCs, but a further 30%disagree.

All of these professionals now have a new way to discuss drainage and sewerage issues with each other, during and beyond transfer. The Drainage Hub makes the most of online networking

technology, connecting professionals across WaSCs, councils, housing associations, contractors and insurers. Like Facebook and LinkedIn, the Hub is free to join and makes communication easy, through building connections, messaging, working groups and forums. Uniquely, its drainage indus-try-specific tools can help water industry users increase time and cost efficiency and improve cus-tomer satisfaction.

Sam Warren of Drainage Hub developer, UK Drainage Protocol, said: “It is crucial that these parties communicate effectively and establish effective ways of working, predominantly from a customer satisfaction perspective but also from a cost and time efficiencies point of view. Lack of communication and agreed processes could create significant issues, with homeowners going from pillar to post and WaSCs potentially having to fight off attempted legal cases from local authorities. ‘In addition, our research shows one in five defects could straddle what will be the new boundary between adopted and private ownership. If a defect identified by the WaSC contractor straddles the boundary, how will they handle it? Should WaSCs risk leaving site with the customer dissatisfied, or write off what could become a significant cost of completing repairs on private drains?”

Attempts to agree a protocol between insurers and WaSCs have apparently been unsuccessful. Sam explained: “Each WaSC may have a different approach. It proved very difficult to produce a detailed agreement that all parties would sign up to. We believe a formal protocol is not actually needed. It is a case of establishing a simple, effective process that WaSCs and their contractors can use as and when they require.”

The Drainage Hub’s solution is its ‘Claims Assistant’. A purpose-built insurance claim management tool for the WaSCs and their contractors, it facilitates recovery of costs and agreement of scope on repairs straddling the boundary between privately and WaSC-owned drains and sewers. Also, by registering claims on behalf of the homeowner, it removes the need for them to contact their insurer. “The Claims Assistant removes all administration from the WaSCs and their contrac-tors, presenting claims to insurance industry specifications, handling insurer liaison and obtaining approval for private sections of repair,” said Sam. “It enables them to repair private drains with insurer approval.” The site also features a ‘Market Place’ for new and used equipment and vehicles and a company directory listing subcontractors, suppliers and consultants.

Sam Warren said: “UKDP was established to resolve communication issues between the disparate groups involved in repairing private shared sewers. In the hub we combine this experience with the flexibility and functionality of online networking. Our focus is on not only customer satisfaction but also clarity of communication across all groups and, critically, control of repair scope and costs.”

The Drainage Hub also works in support of WaterAid and will donate 30 pence on behalf of each person who signs up. Website: www.thedrainagehub.co.uk

AKKERMAN REVEALS NEW CONVENTIONAL PRODUCTS AND MORE AT ICUEE

T he International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition

(ICUEE), known as The Demo Expo, allowed Akkerman to bring its machinery directly to exposition attendees. At the event the company unveiled two new products from its conventional product l ine of pipejacking equipment.

For the first time, customers had access to the 5000 Series II Pump Unit, the heart of Akkerman’s all-in-one pipejacking system. The 5000 Series II Pump Unit features streamlined operation and functions and is compatible with all Akkerman yokes, skids and haul units.

The original 5000 Series Pump Unit, the flagship product for Akkerman, and the heart of our all-in-one 5000 Series pipejacking system, has been a powerful companion on an vast number of pipejacking jobs over the last 30 years. The completely revamped and enhanced 5000 Series II Pump Unit features streamlined operation and functions, an incorporated dual-feed pump to power all TBM sizes, a raised operator’s station with ergonomic controls, many safety provisions and improved maintenance accessibility.

The 5000 Series II Pump Unit requires less pit height than its predecessor due to an integrated dual pump feed. The two, low-pressure, 100 HP (74 kW) Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) electric motors provide low-pressure power for the TBM and conveyor at 3,000 psi (207 bar) and up to 120 gpm (454 l/min). The operator can select various configurations of 30, 60 and 90 gpm (114 to 341 l/min) flow requirements to match the boring head cutter bit drive demands and conveyor and auxiliary operations. The low pressure motors share a 160 gal (606 l) oil reservoir. The 5000 Series II Pump Unit can generate a combined 400 ton (363 tonne) of jacking force through the unit’s two hydraulic cylinders.

A high-pressure 50 hp (37 kW) TEFC electric motor supplies 5,500 psi (379 bar) at up to 26 gpm (98 l/min) for jacking and auxiliary functions. The jacking function oil supply reservoir has a100 gal (379lL) capacity. A required 400 amp, 480 volt, 3-phase connection will provide power to the pipejacking system's electrical needs.

The 5000 Series II Pump Unit offers many ergonomic and safety provisions along with maintenance ease. The operator's platform features eye and hand level indicators and controls while positioned above the pit floor, and away from jacking hydraulics while offering protection on two sides.

The load sense controlled piston pumps make for the most efficient use of the equipment’s hy-draulics at decreased noise levels. Indicators for the oil temperature, oil level and filter replacement alert the operator of maintenance requirements with easy single panel access to filters, pumps and motors. A phase error indicator detects incorrect phase hook-up and inadequate voltage. The pump unit features an emergency TBM power shut-off e-stop and skid lock and unlock indicator to keep crew members safe during operation. The main power cable is included with the package along with a removable power cable storage bracket with locking mechanism.

In-shaft, the system stands a mere 110 in (2.8 m), making the 5000 Series II Pump Unit ideal for clearance when used with most pit shoring configurations. Since it is compatible with all Akkerman standard yokes, skids and haul units, customers with existing Akkerman equipment will be ready for pipejacking with the acquisition of this unit.

Also launched at the event, our most popular sized TBM has experienced a fundamental re-design. The 720 Series II TBM, now capable of rock and soft ground excavation and bi-directional rotation, offers increased torque and drive reliability with simplified hydraulics.

For almost four decades, Akkerman has manufactured distinctive microtunnelling, pipejacking, tunnelling and guided boring equipment. Website: www.akkerman.com

TT-UK IN SAUDI ARABIA

T T-UK in co-operation with its Saudi Arabian agent has recently carried out product training in the correct

use and operational aspects of the Grundomat Soil Displacement technique for installing service pipes and cables throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The major city expansions both in Jeddah and Riyadh will require the increased use of Trenchless Technologies (currently known in the region as No Dig Road Crossing – NDRC) as the industrial and commercial demand increases for fibre optic cable networks and increased water and sanitation capacities.

The operational training consisted of trial bores using Grundomat 45 mm and 75 mm diameter model impact hammers for under road and property service connections to install 32 mm and 63 mm diameter PE pipes. The hot, dusty and mixed ballast (sandy, with rock inclusions) ground conditions were easily dealt with by the Grundomat units due to their proven moving head design.

Precise target accuracy is the main reason for Grundomat’s international success which is achieved with the unique two-stroke impact moving head method.

An environmentally-friendly tool, using the Grundomat soil displacement hammer means: • No Disturbance to gardens, flora and fauna • No objections from the general public • Minimal excavation • Less construction plant equipment • Prevention of traffic jams and diversions • Low noise emissions • Reduced dust particles and CO2 outputs

Should a buried obstacle be encountered and forward propulsion hindered, the chisel/multi-cutter cone in the reciprocating head will continue ‘chiselling’ independently until the obstruction is fragmented and displaced. Website: www.tt-uk.com

FOUR NEW HDD MODELS FROM VERMEER

V ermeer Corpo ra t ion r ecen t l y introduced four new horizontal

directional drill (HDD) models engineered for the unique demands of mixed ground conditions, including rock. These new drills include designs from the drawing table of the popular D36x50 Series II Navigator® HDD, but have been modified to accommodate the distinct rock drilling technologies.

“Each system offers unique advantages to help contractors be more productive in rock drilling applications,” said Tony Briggs, director of underground sales for Vermeer Corporation. “We have conducted exhaustive testing and product development, which has culminated with a line-up that simply provides more options for contractors.

The D36x50R Series II is equipped with the rock-focused MAGnum drilling system. Using rapidly rotating magnets of alternating polarity within the carriage assembly, a high frequency percussive action is generated to fracture and effectively bore through tough formations, including solid rock. This hammer technology was developed in collaboration with FlexiDRILL, a New Zealand-based engineering company, and is licensed for exclusive distribution by Vermeer.

Not a dedicated rock drill, the MAGnum system can be disengaged with the flip of the switch and the D36x50R Series II will perform as a conventional HDD drill. This versatility qualifies the drill for a range of ground conditions to help boost overall utilisation.

The MAGnum drilling system does not require any specialty drill rod, as it utilises standard Firestick®, or any auxiliary support equipment such as an air compressor.

The D36x50DR Series II features a rod-in-rod design with dual threaded makeup. With a rated rotational torque of 1500 ftlb (2,033.7 Nm), the inner rod powers the downhole tri-cone as the outer rod provides steering and backreaming rotation. The dual threaded rod design also enables a drilling fluid course between the inner and outer rod, as well as through the inner rod, to help meet the volume requirements needed for efficient removal of the cuttings.

An automated rod makeup and breakout system can be utilised to reduce manual operator interface, though it is equipped with a manual override for operators who prefer it. The D36x50DR Series II also employs an onboard rod carrying capacity up to 500 ft (152.4 m) of Firestick drill rod.

For downhole performance throughout the entire bore, the 140 hp (104.4 kW) D36x50R Series II and D36x50DR Series II Navigator HDDs feature the same rated 38,000 lb (17,236.5 kg) of thrust/pullback and 5000 ftlb (6,779.1 Nm) of rotational torque as the conventional model. All configurations are available with a rated 70 gpm (265 l/min) drilling fluid pump.

Vermeer Corporation has also introduced the D60x90 Navigator® horizontal directional drill (HDD), providing impressive power in a small footprint; it’s the cost-effective choice for tackling

difficult trenchless installations in challenging ground conditions.

The D60x90 is powered by a 185 hp (138 kW) John Deere Tier4i (Stage IIIB) diesel engine, which delivers 9000 ftlb (12,202 Nm) of rotational torque and 60,000 lb (267 kN) of thrust/pullback. Combined with a compact design and modest footprint, the power of the D60x90 rivals some physically larger drills.

Contractors can customise the D60x90 with add-on features to fit their specific needs. An optional climate-controlled cab enhances operator comfort and offers protection from the weather. The optional front-mounted stakedown system can reduce the amount of time and materials needed to set up the drill, enhancing jobsite efficiency. In addition, customers can choose either 10 ft (3 m) configurations of 2.875 in (73 mm) diameter Firestick® drill rods to minimise the operational footprint or maximise onboard drill rod carrying capacity by selecting 15 ft (4.6 m) rod lengths at 2.875 in (73 mm) diameter. A 3½ in (90 mm) rod option will be available soon.

The D60x90 is available with additional, quick-change rod boxes containing up to 300 ft (91.4 m) of drill rod each. The new rod box design is removable by releasing two pins and a single latch, the quick-change rod box reduces the need to manually load drill rod.

The D60x90 is equipped with a 7 in (178 mm) TFT-LCD colour monitor that offers visibility to key drilling function parameters, as well as DCI locator information. Secondary screens provide visibility to engine information and self diagnostics, such as fault and advisory codes at the touch of a button. A multifunction steering system, designed for use in hard ground conditions, helps improve drilling accuracy by reducing manual operator input.

Vermeer Corporation has also introduced the all new D100x140 Navigator® horizontal directional drill (HDD), designed for the needs of the water, sewer and gas pipeline market, among other installation applications. A number of design considerations have been incorporated to provide enhanced drilling performance and productivity in challenging soil conditions.

The D100x140 is powered by a 275 hp (205.1 kW) CAT diesel engine that meets EPA interim Tier 4 and EU Stage IIIB emissions certification and produces 100,000 lb (445 kN) of thrust/pullback force. The unit is rated at a maximum of 14,000 ftlb (18,981.5 Nm) of rotational torque or maximum rotational speeds up to 200 rpm. Increased torque and speed transfers more power downhole to improve productivity.

Vermeer has further introduced a new user interface to offer the operator the enhanced ability to monitor drill performance during operation. The D100x140 features two large colour digital displays positioned near the drill operator’s line of sight down the bore path. The first is the integrated multifunction display (MFD) locator remote.

The second displays machine performance data including rotational speed and torque, thrust/pullback pressure, drilling fluid pump pressure and diagnostics, as well as the engine after-treatment functionality.

The standard, climate-controlled cab is larger than previous models in this class, featuring improved drilling operation visibility, ergonomic controls and operator comfort. A wireline platform and local lockout button suspends drilling operations when activated. This is intended to enhance safety and access in wireline applications.

The D100x140 offers two Firestick® drill rod options including 15 ft (4.5 m) or 20 ft (6 m) to meet contractor preferences. The 15 ft (4.5 m) rod option is applicable for jobsites that may require a smaller footprint. Those looking for maximum onboard rod footage may consider the 20 ft (6 m) rod. Firestick drill rods have a one-piece construction for exceptional strength and bend radius. Stackable rod boxes with a single pin design and patent-pending auto-lock allow an additional rod to be loaded from an upper rod box. An optional onboard knuckle boom crane provides the ability to add additional rod boxes and reduces the need for additional support equipment on the jobsite.

Drilling fluid pump on the D100x140 includes a rated maximum of 230 gpm (870.6 l/min) at 1,100 psi (75.8 bar). These rates of pressure and volume help improve drill performance, particularly when backreaming and in mud motor applications. A channelled rack design and dump valve/port contributes to easy cleanup and a cleaner jobsite environment.

Service and maintenance accessibility was also a factor in the design. A pivoting swing-out door provides access to hydraulic components where the pump and filters can be easily reached. A flip-up panel provides access to the engine bay, and a separate enclosure contains the battery, fuses and controller. The D100x140 is also equipped with steel tracks for increased wear life. NEW RECYCLER FOR WALSH WASTE

W alsh Waste of Galway, Ireland has been involved in the implementation

of sustainable waste management solutions since 1972. A Galway-based family owned and managed company offering both solid and liquid waste services to the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors, Walsh Waste has a staff of 35 and operations in three Galway locations. Today its state-of-the-art fleet of over 30 trucks operates across Ireland. Ten of these are dedicated to the collection of a variety of liquid waste types. Walsh Waste is deeply committed to continuous investment in its people, technology, fleet and facilities to ensure service levels meet and even exceed customer expectations. “Our goal is to remain at the forefront of change and we will continue to adapt within a fast changing environment to ensure we provide efficient customer solutions.” said Gerard Walsh, Director of Walsh Waste.

Wiedemann & Reichhardt has been a leader in the field of water recycling sewer cleaning vehicles since it launched the first recycler in 1977 and has continually led the industry with innovation after innovation. Water recycling has many benefits but the main ones are the environmental savings in relation to saving drinking water and also the huge increase in production of the machine compared to standard sewer cleaning machines.

At a time when there are drinking water shortages, and contractor’s working rates are at very low levels, these advantages become increasingly important. Water needs to be conserved and contractors need to be in a position to operate vehicles at maximum production and maximum fuel efficiency in order to maintain a healthy business.

“Using potable water from fire hydrants to clean drains makes no sense. Drinking water is much too valuable for cleaning sewers. With commercial water charges already in place drain cleaning with water recycling is the only sustainable solution to maintaining storm and sewer pipe networks.” said Walsh.

The new Wiedemann & Reichhardt Super 1000 unit is mounted on a 435 hp Mercedes Actros 6x2 chassis with sleeper Cab. The superstructure was carefully designed and constructed to meet the requirements of Walsh Waste and includes some very innovative features:

The KW4000 liquid ring vacuum pump has an impressive suction capacity of 4000 m3/hr, the low noise pump has an incredibly low power requirement of just 106 kW; this will save on fuel costs when operating the machine. The KW4000 can use the recycled water in the liquid ring; this offers a great payload advantage over many other vehicles because there is no need for a service water tank and cooler.

The URACA high pressure pump is driven by the Wiedemann patented double-drive pump system. This allows the pump to be driven at the most efficient RPM depending on the type of work being carried out, thus offering further significant fuel savings.

The Wiedemann & Reichhardt Continuous and Automatic water Recycling system has proven itself in the field since the 1970’s and ensures reliable operation. The 7 stage process includes the following main processes, self cleaning filter, sedimentation and cyclones.

Winter operation system – this system prevents the water in hoses, tanks and pumps from freezing while travelling to jobsites in sub-zero temperatures without the need to drain the system completely

between jobs; this allows for quicker response times. The combined boom can rotate by 180o around the rear of the truck and is telescopic by 1.2 m giving an extended boom reach around the rear of the truck of 3.7 m; this allows for fast and safe positioning of the jetting and suction hoses. “The Wiedemann will allow us to further improve the safety of working conditions particularly for

VERMEER ADDS NEW MUD PUMP

T he new Vermeer® SA400 mud pump provides a continuous

flow of drilling fluid at any pump speed during drilling operations. Powered by a 350 hp (261 kW) CAT Tier 4 Interim (EU Stage IIIB) engine, the SA400 joins the Vermeer line-up of ‘Maxi’ horizontal directional drills and reclaimers serving the pipeline installation market.

“With the addition of the SA400, Vermeer offers pipeline contractors a one-stop shop for major components of drilling operations,” said Jon Heinen, manager for the Vermeer pipeline business segment.

The SA400 features a triplex piston pump system and has a pump capacity up to 435.3 gpm (1647.8 l/min). The pump features a clutch with a continuous duty throw-out bearing to allow extended idle while in neutral, and a suction inlet valve to suspend charged flow during drill rod makeup/breakout. The electrical centrifugal pump for the liner wash keeps the fluid end of the pump cool and lubricated. This allows the pump to run cleanly, providing a longer life for both the piston and liner.

The onboard open control station and a tethered control box allow the operator to move the control to a different location near the machine. This gives the operator the ability to monitor mud flow rate at any point around the unit, keeping an eye on pump performance wherever it is most convenient.

Jobsite efficiency is a key benefit with the SA400 mud pump. A liner wash tank is integrated into the pump design so that extra water containers or electricity are not needed for machine operation. This also allows for the pump to handle more jobsite debris. Website: www.vermeer.com
