PLANITHERM® XNLow-e double glazing So thermally efficient, it’s like double double glazing.
There’s double glazing. And then there’s double glazing with Viridian’s premium Planitherm® XN glass.
It’s a low-e glass with an invisible coating that reflects heat back into the room rather than letting it escape outside.
Planitherm® XN reduces heat loss by up to 59% compared to ordinary double glazing, so you’ll feel cosier and warmer on the coldest winter night.
So don’t think twice. Choose Viridian’s Planitherm® XN glass for your retrofit or new double and triple glazed windows.

The Big Event
Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000
the centre of activity
Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 was
built as a multi-purpose centre and it has
certainly delivered on that promise.
The economic impact of events held
at the facility has been calculated in
the tens of millions of dollars. With the
development of other facilities in the
region, the focus for the Stadium has
shifted to events and functions for more
than 700 people. Large-scale concerts
for more than 1000 people, trade events
and expos compliment a broad range of
sports tournaments held there each year.

SAYS
I guess I should start to care aboutrugby again.
It seems like a strange thing forthis die-hard South African rugbysupporter to say.
Perhaps it was the Springboksearly exit from the World Cup - byearly I mean they didn’t win.
The reason is more likely thatthe season is so long.
It doesn’t seem that long agothe All Blacks were raising theWebb Ellis trophy above theirheads, again.
And now the Super Rugbyseason is already in full swing.
I’m a huge Sharks fan, but Ihave honestly had to try veryhard to get enthused about whatthey or any other team are up to.
The new, and if you ask me,somewhat convoluted SuperRugby format, makes thetournament 17 weeks long.
I’m afraid it’s longer than myenthusiasm for one tournamentcan last.
Still, the Sharks are my teamand I had better get the sportschannel fired up, crack open a fewrefreshments and enjoy.

Autumnharvest of a salty variety
Salt is piled up in stacks after being washed in brine at the Dominion Salt site at Lake Grassmere. Operations manager
Euan McLeish says the company is about three weeks into harvest, a process which lasts six to eight weeks. The high
sunshine hours and strong winds mean the yield from this harvest is on track to exceed the average of around 65,000
tonnes, he says. The 1416-hectare site has 46 ponds, including 22 crystallising ponds, which the concentrated sea
water was put into last October. PHOTO: SCOTT HAMMOND/FAIRFAX NZ

With Poppy Day just a few daysaway, members of theMarlborough Returned andServices Association (RSA) arehoping for a few more names to beadded to the volunteer roster.
Each year, the women’ssection of the RSA receive a waveof ‘‘wonderful’’ support fromMarlburians who dedicate hoursof their time to selling poppiesand collecting donations on April15.
Women’s section presidentNoeleen Thomson says even
signing up for an hour ofcollecting makes all thedifference.
‘‘People can pick what timesthey go out, whether they justwant to do an hour or two, or theycan volunteer for longer,’’ shesays.
‘‘Last year we raised $30,000. Itwould be nice to break it or beatit. Every year it seems to go upand up and up. When I firststarted helping out $16,000 or$19,000 was great, but now we’regetting around $30,000.’’
People interested in helpingout can add their name to a
whiteboard in the Clubs ofMarlborough foyer.
Women’s section secretaryLynette Corfield says volunteerscome from all walks of life andthere are always new faces eachyear.
‘‘We have 20 or 30 peoplehelping out. Some people havebeen doing it for years and alwayswant to help, and this year wehave a few retired people whowant to lend a hand,’’ she says.
And Lynette says the RSA isalways looking for a few extrapairs of hands to help out with theplanning of Poppy Day collection
by becoming members.‘‘It’s a bit of work, we actually
start pinning the poppies about
two months before Poppy Day. It’salways good to have some helpand get some new members.

Darlene Purdie will take over from Nancy Sherwood as Synergy Youth Mentoring co-ordinator. PHOTO: ASHLEIGH MONK/FAIRFAX NZ
After retiring from her position asSynergy Youth Mentoring co-ordinator, Nancy Sherwood hasbeen searching for someone to fillher boots.
And she has found the perfectfit in former Primary HealthOrganisation (PHO) ActiveFamilies co-ordinator DarlenePurdie.
Nancy says she picked Darlenefor her experience and skills inworking with families.
‘‘I’m confident that she will doa great job when she takes over.’’
Darlene says her work at thePHO and experience as abehavioural training consultantwill be put to good use at Synergy, and she is looking forward totaking over.
‘‘It’s probably the first youththing that I’ve done, but it’s rightup my alley with connectingpeople,’’ she says.
‘‘The whole mentoring thing isreally exciting, to be able to getthe kids together with someonewho will potentially be a rolemodel so they can strive to be thebest they can be is amazing.’’
Darlene says she has threeboys aged nine, 11 and 13, so sheunderstands youth to a certainextent.
‘‘I’m not the perfect parent butI do realise that kids do needpositive role models, and justsomeone to talk to and listen tothem.’’
She says she isn’t feelingnervous about taking over theposition, but she has been spend-ing plenty of time with Nancy tomake sure she is well-prepared.
‘‘The more time I can spendwith Nancy the better. I’m justpicking her brains and I’m notNancy, but hopefully I can do as
good a job as she has done.’’‘‘It’s a challenge and it’s
exciting. I think I’ve got theability to do it well, so I’m not
nervous about that. It’s one ofthose things that you learn on thejob.
‘‘Marlborough is full of good
people, people who have probablynever thought about mentoring, but the work is nothing and it’s sorewarding to be a mentor.’’

Drummer digs Blenheim beatASHLEIGH MONK
Alaskan drummer Jim Husek. PHOTO: ASHLEIGH MONK/FAIRFAX NZ
When Jim Husek moved to NewZealand from his home in Alaskawith his Kiwi wife, he was afraidhe wouldn’t find his place in themusic scene.
But when he stepped foot inBlenheim, he discovered he waswrong.
Jim, who plays the drums andtakes pride in his 12-piece drumkit, says the talent of themusicians he has met inBlenheim has been ‘‘incredible’’.
‘‘The talent here is just as good
as anywhere else I’ve been. Themusicians I have met andbefriended are truly in love withmusic as much as I am,’’ he says.
‘‘A lot of these guys playmultiple instruments whichmakes their musicality even moreintense. I’m lucky to have movedto a place with the talent andkindness these people have shownme and I very much appreciateit.’’
Jim says he started playing thedrums when he was 15, and hisonly regret is not starting earlier.
‘‘All my life I knew I was going
to do something musically, but Ididn’t know what. So I bought apair of sticks and I just startedhitting everything with them.
‘‘My grandparents bought me adrum kit for Christmas. I put ittogether like the picture and thenext day my friends showed upwith their instruments and a six-pack of beer, and they got all setup, put their amps on my dresser, tuned their guitars and looked atme. I said ‘OK, what do I do?’’’

HERB HEAVENGetting out and about in the garden is a nice way to spend time with your
child, and the school holidays give you a good chance to really get stuck
in. Whether it’s planting a vegetable garden or growing fl owers from
seed, gardening provides kids with many valuable lessons. If the idea of
planting a vegetable garden seems a little ambitious, try making a herb
garden instead. Herb plants are obviously available from garden centres,
but most supermarkets also have a selection of herb plants and they only
cost a few dollars. Everyday
herbs like parsley, chives,
and mint are easy to grow,
and your child can start
enjoying them instantly.
Like vegetables, herbs
can be grown in pots as
well as gardens, so no
matter where you live a
herb garden is defi nitely
attainable.
MAKE A MOVIEHave your children make their own movie either
on a video / DVD recorder, or on the computer.
They will have to come up with a storyline fi rst,
and then spend time putting it together. Of
course there will also be the grand showing
at the end.
Make invitations to attend the offi cial
premiere, and send them to your
children’s friends with details of date,
time and occasion. If you want, ask
everyone to dress in fancy clothes
so that the premiere can be extra
special.
Set your lounge or theatre room
up with rows of chairs, cushions
or beanbags, and roll out a red
carpet for your guests. Make
a pathway with garden stakes
up to your door, and tie on lots of red
balloons. Make sure the curtains are
closed, so the room is dark like a real
theatre.
As your children’s guests arrive, greet
them with a bag of popcorn or a
ice-cream, and usher them to their
seat with a torch. The premiere will be
the talk of tinsel town!
• Decorate a plain cork notice board to make a great
message centre for school notices, photographs,
certificates and notes.
• Glue photographs and embellishments onto old CDs.
Drill a hole in the top of each one, and loop them
together with a ribbon or metal ring to make a truly
unique photo album.
• Mosaic over rocks or old gumboots to make great
looking garden art.
• Have your favourite photographs printed onto material,
then stitch them together to make a pillow, quilt, or bag.
Most copy centres can copy photographs onto canvas
while you wait.
• Make a great mobile by stringing together a whole heap
of old CD’s. It looks particularly good hanging in the sun.

Community Law Marlborough caseworkerTracey Hewitt discusses health and safety laws.
Everyone from employees to chief executives need to be aware of health and safety laws. PHOTO: FILE
New laws helpnot hinder
After much ado, it is finally here,a new regime for health and safetyin the workplace.
The Health and Safety at WorkAct 2015 came into effect on April4. Prior to it coming into effect theact in its various stages received alot of media attention; often thisattention created fear anduncertainty about what it willmean for workplaces and workersalike.
With that in mind it is timelyto consider what motivated thegovernment to introduce the act.
Following the Pike River Minedisaster in 2010, the Governmentestablished the RoyalCommission on the Pike RiverCoal Mine Tragedy. Thecommission report made 16recommendations, which theGovernment accepted.
As a result work place healthand safety was put under thespotlight and the governmentproposed an overhaul of NewZealand’s workplace health andsafety laws. The overall aim wasto improve health and safety inthe workplace.
By 2020 the Government, through WorkSafe New Zealand
reforms, aims to have a 25 percent reduction in New Zealand’sworkplace injury and death toll.
A review of the legislation atthe time of the commission’sreport considered it prescriptivewith a focus on particular hazardsin particular industries.
The legislation was 20 yearsold; it lacked capacity to recogniseevolving working relationshipsand complex work arrangements.
This made it difficult forworkers and businesses toidentify and understand who hadwhat duty.
The new laws are modelled onthe Australian Model law. For ahealth and safety regime to beeffective Australian Model lawrecognised this requiresparticipation, leadership andaccountability by Government, businesses and workers.
Regulations and guidance needto be easily understood andcomplied with, enforcementregimes must be effective andobligations are on those in workenvironments who create risk andare therefore best able to managethis. Legislation must be flexible, not impose unnecessary
compliance costs, and encourageincreased worker participation, knowledge and accountability.
In furthering the purpose of theact section 3 (2) says workers andother persons should be given thehighest level of protection againstharm to their health, safety, andwelfare from hazards and risksarising from work as isreasonably practicable.
Importantly the act does not setout to eliminate risk, rather itaims to ensure risks are identifiedand managed, as much as isreasonably practicable.
To achieve its purpose the actintroduces some new concepts
and changes the language inwhich work place health andsafety matters are referred to,making it more about risks andless about hazards.
The act also establishes a morecollaborative approach to dealingwith health and safety in the workplace. It identifies principleswhich can be applied to a varietyof situations.
To ensure its relevance todiverse and ever evolving workplaces and employers, thelegislation creates PCBU’s. APCBU is a person conducting abusiness or undertaking, so it hasa much broader meaning than
employer and covers alternativeworking relationships.
It will also apply to board ofgovernance members.
The legislation also refers toand defines ‘‘workers’’, ratherthan ‘‘employees’’, and clarifiesduty holders and duties. It hasnew compliance and enforcementprovisions with stronger penaltiesand enhanced court powers withscope to recover costs forprosecutions.
If you have concerns aboutyour health and safety in theworkplace, Community LawMarlborough can assist on0800 266 529 or 03 577 9919.

Shop beats peers through local support

ASHLEIGH MONK ‘‘To hear that we aredoing so well is verygood. It is a verypersonal industrybecause it’s a hobby,it’s your craft, it’swhat you do.’’
After five years of hard work anddedication, owners of a Blenheimstore have sewed and stitchedtheir way to the top.
The Sewing Store, on High St,has beaten out 27 other Berninasewing machine suppliers toclaim the Bernina Dealer of theYear Award.
Co-owner Lars Hamann sayschanging the location of the storefrom its previous location inCentrepoint Mall to their spot inHigh St has made a big differencefor business.
‘‘It’s nice to get that pat on theback and to be acknowledged, especially if you come from asmaller town,’’ he says.
‘‘To hear that we are doing sowell is very good. It is a very per-sonal industry because it’s ahobby, it’s your craft, it’s whatyou do.’’
Bernina New Zealand manag-ing director Glyn Singleton sayshe believes the shop has done sowell to stay afloat when othersmall businesses have gone underbecause of the support from thecommunity.
‘‘There’s something that anindependent operator can offerthat chain stores just can’tmatch,’’ he says.
‘‘The people in a local shopplay an important part in whatyou’re buying. They have good
advice, the have experience andknow what they’re doing, and youcan’t put a price on that.’’
The rise in internet sales hasaffected smaller businesses, hesays, but there has been a notice-able drift back into shoppinglocally.
‘‘We’re hoping that’s startingto turn as people are realising thatif they don’t look after their localstore, it won’t be there. If they justwant a reel of thread or some but-tons, it won’t be there.
‘‘They’ll all be selling the samemachine at roughly the sameprice, but that shop that gives thecustomer a bit more is the onethat is genuinely adding value totheir product.’’
The award is determined overa number of factors includingstore presentation, tuition offeredin store, involvement in localcraft groups, customer and techni-cal service, and business growth.

Get2Fit Fitness Studio instructor Tracy Adams,of Blenheim, shares her insight on theimportance of keeping active.

LOOK WHO’STALKING
Tracy Adamson keeping fit
Personally I thinkdiet is moreimportant, especially if you arewanting to loseweight. Fitness is,however, crucial foryour mind andgeneral well being. The fitter you arethe better you willfeel.
Did you always want to be afitness instructor?
No, growing up I alwayswanted to be a school teacher. Ispent hours as a child sitting infront of my dolls being theteacher, however once I had mychildren I decided to change mydirection and started teaching theimportance of healthy living, through diet and exercise to asmany people as I could throughmy business Get2it Fitness. What is the best part of yourjob?
My clients. When they succeedit gives me the greatest buzz. AlsoI love the fact that I get to talkabout and teach something that Iam super passionate about – Ithink that’s the greatest thing youshould be able to say about yourjob, doing something you believein.
What words or phrases do youlive by?
‘‘There is no such word ascan’t’’.
‘‘No excuses, get to it’’.The biggest one though that
has changed my life would have tobe, ‘‘Feel the fear and do it’’.
I try to live by, ‘‘If it scares youthen you should do it’’.
Within reason that is.
Why is it important that peoplekeep active?
I had the most amazing tutor atOtago University who told me thatyou need to keep active so that
you build the most importantmuscle in your body, your heart.Doing this effectively means wewill reduce our resting heart rate.
If we all reduce our restingheart rate and sleep for seven toeight hours a day then that’s agood thing.
Is fitness a key part to a healthylifestyle?
No, fitness is just one of thethings you need.
Personally I think diet is moreimportant, especially if you arewanting to lose weight. Fitness is,however, crucial for your mindand general well being. The fitteryou are the better you will feel.
Being fit means so many
things; you will be able to keep upwith your kids, have more energy, sleep better – the list goes on.
Most importantly it really isthe best anti-depressant there is.
What is your best tip or trick tokeeping fit?
Metafit – short and effective isbest.
People think they need toexercise for hours to get benefits. Ilove to go for long runs or bikerides but if you don’t, then stopspending hours at the gym, running or walking when you canget the same benefits in just 30minutes, if done correctly.
What advice would you offer topeople who might feel self-
conscious about working out inpublic?
Don’t. If you feel self consciousand it’s holding you back thendon’t do it.
Make exercise something thatmakes you feel happy andcomfortable. We are so lucky herein Blenheim that there are manyplaces you can sneak away to andexercise like the hills or the river.
You could also join me andcome along to my cycling classwhere the lighting is dimmed andyou can sit back relax and bike tothe tune of the music. Anotheroption I make available is onlinetraining, as not everyone can orwants to get out and about.

Hunt out this hilarious, heart-warming taleHunt for theWilderpeople (PG)
Directed by:TaikaWaititi
Starring: SamNeill, JulianDennison,
Rima TeWiata
101 mins★★★★★
Sam Neill and Julian Dennison create a believable bond as an odd couple on the lam in Hunt for the Wilderpeople.
STEVE NEWALL
On paper, the idea of releasing afilm in 2016 about a smartarse kidand his taciturn caregiver on thelam in the New Zealand bushseems foolhardy.
Let alone one based on a BarryCrump novel, the author seemingrepresentative of an even morebygone age than when he was stilla cultural fixture. After watchinga quarter-hour or so of dry, lowkey, Taika Waititi humour –charmingly funny as it may be –amid Hunt for the Wilderpeople’srural setting, you may bewondering if the pic has moregoing for it. In four words: itbloody well does.
After establishing the film’scharacters and their unhurriedpace of life, Waititi begins to leanon the accelerator. Before youknow it, you’ll find yourself andthe rest of the audience beingswept up in an unlikely underdogadventure that continues to layeron emotional resonance even as itdials up the hysterics. Yes, this isas funny as you’d expect, andperhaps even more so, with gagsall over the scale fromconversational quips to outrightabsurdity.
At Wilderpeople’s core is theever-strengthening odd couplerelationship between JulianDennison and Sam Neill, born ofcircumstance, fuelled byfrustration, yet building a
believable bond that the filmcrucially entices one to invest in.Individually, they’re as strong asthey are together, especially wheninteracting with the supportingodd bods who drift in and out oftheir orbit, but Waititi still coaxessomething special from theirpairing.
Yes, the film successfullychannels the anarchic anti-establishment New Zealand on-screen outlook of decades past, and references it too, but don’tworry about missing a gag here, location there, even a prominentprop.
That won’t detract from ahilarious, heart-warming tale thatharnesses script, direction andperformances and takes plenty ofcreative risks on its way todelivering movie magic.

Out the Back
The lowdownThe lowdownWho: Glen and Richard Herkt
What: 1969 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV
What else is in the garage? 56 James Captain motor bike,
54 VW Beetle, Honda 50, Imperell race car.
What was your fi rst car? VW variant which I restored.
Road rage – what makes you see red? People driving at 95km/hr
and not using their mirrors.
Your best driving memory: When I owned my VW, we blew the motor
up on the West Coast. I left the car at the motor camp for a week then we
did a midnight run in a friends Escort station wagon to pick the car up.
Unfortunately just a week later the friends Escort blew up as well!
History of the Vehicle: The car was bought in Canberra Australia and
spent the first year of its life there, until the owner decided to shift to
New Zealand, he bought the Alfa with him. The car was taken off the road
in 1987 by the same owner due to motor problems. He parked it up until
we purchased it in 1995.
Tell us about the Project: After my father and I bought the car in 1995
we stripped it completely right down to the last nut and bolt. We then did
a ground up restoration, this included doing up the motor, the gearbox
and also the differential. We redid the upholstery as well. The car was
drivable in 2000 but it took us another couple of years to get it fi nally
registered and on the road in 2002.
Why an Alfa Romeo 1750: because it looks nice, drives really well and
it’s a whole lot of fun on the road.
Would you sell it? Not really, no.

Big Makos names ready for the new seasonMARTYN VERCOETasman Makos teammanager
Joe Wheeler is among a raft of Tasman Makos players who has resigned with the team. PHOTO: FILE
Also added to themix this season isex-New Zealandunder 20 first five-eighth and fullbackMitchell Hunt whohas been signedfrom Auckland.
One thing I get asked a lot in myjob is, ‘‘How are those Makos look-ing this year?’’
It is really cool to see thepassion first hand that there is inour community for our localteam.
I thought I might give a bit ofan update about how plans areprogressing for the upcomingMakos season which starts inAugust.
Obviously one of the biggestchanges to the Makos this year isa change in head coach.
With Kieran Keane moving tothe Chiefs, it is time for Leon Mac-Donald to take the reins. Leonwas KK’s assistant for six seasonsat the Makos, so it is a perfecttime for him to take over the helmand so far he seems to be reallyenjoying the challenge and will doa great job.
This time of year is all abouthelping our local club playersdevelop into potential Makos laterin the year.
Since January, Leon and hisnew skills coach Andrew Good-man have been running a Makoswider training squad made up of18 club players from across Nel-son and Marlborough.
Realistically there are up toseven or eight positions up forgrabs in the Makos squad, onceour Super Rugby players come
back into the region in August. Our Makos philosophy is to try
and promote local club playersinto the Makos through our widertraining group and club rugbyform, but at the same time we donot want to set local players up tofail.
So, we have to be sure they canhandle Mitre 10 Cup rugby beforethey are selected.
This season our local playerswill have plenty of chances to per-form in front of the Makosselectors at a level above theirlocal competition.
They have an inter-squad trialin May, a game against a Countiesinvitational team in June, and apre-season game against Welling-ton before the Makos squad isnamed on August 4, for our firstMitre 10 game against Waikato onAugust 21.
In terms of key players, theMakos look handy again in 2016with the likes of Marty Banks,James Lowe, Joe Wheeler, Alex
Ainley, Pete Samu, ShaneChristie, Liam Squire, Tim Perry,Billy Guyton and David Havili allsigned on for another campaign.
Also added to the mix thisseason is ex-New Zealand under20 first five-eighth and fullbackMitchell Hunt who has beensigned from Auckland.
I am not going to be arrogantenough to predict how the Makosmay go this season, but I canguarantee the lads will be verymotivated to play well.
Whilst I am hugely passionateabout Makos rugby it is also vitalto look after grassroots footy aswell and I endorse Tasman Rugby
who have a real focus on lookingafter and helping run communityrugby in Marlborough, includingMarlborough junior teams andclub rugby.
Like most businesses we arealways looking to improve inthese areas and provide a goodservice.
