Behind the Scenes

We decided to radically change the norm of the NZ timber industry.

Being industry experts in visual, solid timber for over

20 years, ATS Timber saw an increasing demand for a

highly visual and structural, solid timber beam range.

Over 7 years ago we launched our unique range of

Kingfisher SG8 solid Pine, kiln dried beams. Producing

these Radiata Pine beams from the NZ timber resource

presented us with numerous on-going challenges.

There had to be a superior alternative. It had to be a

better visual grade, have superior structural properties

to Radiata Pine, meet or exceed all appropriate NZ

Standards, be more dimensionally stable, be price

competitive and be environmentally certified.

We would accept nothing less than the best in the world.

Twelve months of R&D has resulted in this launch of

Kingfisher Spruce™ “Making the unbelievable, affordable.”

Read on to see the benefits of choosing Kingfisher

Spruce™ in your next project.

Certificate of Conformance

NZS 3622:2004

Kingfisher Spruce™

This is to certify that the timber supplied as Kingfisher Spruce™ has beenproduced and verified in accordance with the following New Zealand Standard:

Kingfisher Spruce™ beams and framing display the following characteristics:

Stainless Steel xings must be used with Copper Quat (CQ) treatment

3602:2003NZS - GV108 -

Kingfisher Spruce™ Certificate of Conformance • NZS 3622: Verification of Timber Properties. Grade Right (NZ) Ltd has approved that Kingfisher Spruce has exceeded the

equivalent properties of SG8 and SG10 in kiln dried SG8 and SG10.

• NZS 3602: Timber & Wood-based products used in Building – “The table includes the most commonly used and

generally available species. They do not purport to be exhaustive , nor cover all the species that may be available from

time to time. Specifiers are advised to contact local suppliers to determine species availability.” Clause C104.1, page 11

• NZS 3604: Timber Frame Buildings – Specification and spans for SG8 & SG10 Kingfisher Spruce are to be determined

via the span tables in this Standard.

• NZBC Clause B2 Durability – As untreated, Kingfisher Spruce has a durability rating of 4 (perishable/non-durable)

which is the same as untreated Radiata Pine. ATS Timber recommends that SG8 & SG10 untreated timber is only used

in ‘low-risk designs’ and is signed off by appropriate authorities. We recommend that all Kingfisher Spruce used in its

untreated state has a surface coating applied to assist it in its longevity and protection against insect attack. H3.2CQ

can be used in exterior applications with no ground contact as covered in The Building Code.

• Alternative Solution: “An alternative solution is a building design, of all or part of a building, that demonstrates

compliance with the Building Code…The Building Code being a performance based code, allows for innovation and

uniqueness.”

• We recommend that Kingfisher Spruce SG8 & SG10 in UT is only used in ‘low-risk’ designs unless authorized by

appropriate authorities. Please note: Kingfisher Spruce is not marketed for use as a general internal framing timber.

F.A.Q.F.A.Q.

Q: This range of Kingfisher Spruce™ is far superior to the existing

Radiata Pine range, is it that much more expensive?

A: No. Even though it is a far superior product it is very similar in price to the

existing Radiata Pine range meaning you get a lot more value-for-money.

Q: Will it be available in a band sawn finish?

A: Not at this stage. All stock will be held in a dressed finish with a small

arris on each corner.

Q: Can I use Kingfisher Spruce™ where Radiata Pine, Douglas Fir or

Macrocarpa has been?

A: Yes, as an Alternative Solution. Kingfisher Spruce has proven structural

properties that are equivalent to, or exceed NZS requirements. Please

ensure the architect, engineer, council and appropriate authorities

authorise the change.

Q: Spruce is not mentioned in the NZ Building Code and NZ Standard,

is it compliant?

A: Yes, as an Alternative Solution. As you will see from this publication,

Kingfisher Spruce has undergone rigorous testing and is equivalent or

exceeds all NZ structural standards.

Q: Can you supply job-lot quantities in different sizes and lengths?

A: Yes. We can supply any of the standard size range in 4.8 and 6.0m lengths

in multiple-size, part-packet lots through any of our 300+ Approved

Resellers nationwide.

Q: Is there any defects that can occur with Kingfisher Spruce?

A: Yes. As with any solid natural timber product, it is subject to the bending,

splitting, twisting, bowing and cupping. The characteristics though

of Spruce make it far superior to Kingfisher SG8 Radiata Pine range. It

grows very slowly in cold climates, so has very tight growth rings and

hasn’t got the troublesome core wood that is characteristic of Radiata

Pine. This means it stays a lot more stable and is a lot stronger and stiffer.

The dry nature of Kingfisher Spruce (approx. 12-15%) means that surface

splitting is not uncommon but is unlikely to impact the structural

properties of the timber.

Q: Spruce is a European species. How will it perform in NZ conditions?

A: We have gone to great lengths in testing this product and getting

independent reviews on it by recognized timber industry engineers,

auditors, government agencies and local council authorities. We have

chosen it for its world-renowned structural performance and visual

features (small knots, tight grain and pale colour). It must only be used in

applications covered in the NZ Building Code in relation to its durability

and structural performance properties.

Q: What is the durability of Kingfisher Spruce?

A: In its untreated state it has a durability rating of Class 4 which is the same

as Radiata Pine. The H3.2CQ treated option meets the NZ Standards

for treatment performance for Hazard Class 3.2 for exterior use, above

ground. Untreated sapwood is susceptible to insect attack and this can

be minimized through applying a sealant or coating and making sure it

is kept in a dry atmosphere.

Q: Where can I learn more about the Spruce species?

NotesBest Practice Guides

Disclaimer:This information is a guide only. Professional advice from an industry expert regarding each specific application is recommended.

Please read the above in conjunction with the NZ Building Code and Branz publications.

ATS Timber Ltd will not take any responsibility for any product failure where the above

Best Practice Guidelines haven’t been fully adhered to.

General

• All products must be inspected as being fit for intended purpose

before installation. ATS Timber Ltd accepts no responsibility for

movement or splitting of the timber once received and/or installed.

• All products must be installed correctly in accordance with the New

Zealand Building Code.

• All fasteners and hardware used in conjunction with the timber must

comply with equivalent New Zealand Standards and best industry

practices. We recommend the use of stainless steel fasteners and

hardware for maximum performance, especially where the product is

treated with CCA, LOSP or ACQ.

• All timber should remain in its protective packaging until it is ready

for installation.

• Most timber will require some preparation before and/or after

installation to achieve a high quality finish.

• We recommend that all timber products should be installed and

securely fastened promptly upon receipt of the goods to minimise

any movement that may result from them being left loose or in

extreme conditions.

• These are natural products and may be subject to movement and

resin bleed especially in hot conditions.

• We do not recommend the use of dark paints or coatings as this

may accentuate movement and splitting of timber, especially if it is

exposed to the sun or hot temperatures.

• Must be protected from any moisture or weather.

• Should be used in a well ventilated, interior environment and

not subject to extreme or prolonged heat as this may accentuate

splitting, bowing and twisting.

• Untreated is not recommended to be used in any applications that

will be exposed to any weather or moisture.

• They are not sanded and sealed. Products will require work before

applying coatings.

Handling of treated timber

• Wear a dust mask and protective eye wear when cutting and sanding

treated timber.

• Wear gloves when handling treated timber.

• Thoroughly wash any skin that has been in contact with treated

timber.

• Dispose of treated timber by ordinary rubbish collection. Do not burn.

• Any cut ends must be end- sealed before installation.
