FOR CHILDREN IN

SANTA MONICA, OCUILAN STATE OF MEXICO

PROBLEM

The earthquake that took place on September 19th has left a lot of buildings affected and many structures unrepairable.

In rural communities of the State of Mexico schools will be demolished.

Many of these communities do not have sufficient resources to recover all the damage caused.

This has become a natural disaster and a social problem that stops educational and community development.

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

After evaluation of the damages there is a need to rebuild educational spaces to accommodate the children.

This will help aid the community to recover from the natural disaster and offer children a safe, environmentally friendly and low-cost space that will allow them to continue their education.

According to UNICEF the lack of education creates a higher chance, after only a few months, of children dropping out of school. This has recently increased significantly.

The student

community consists of

448 students. The

school provides

educational services

during the morning

and evening.

THERE IS A NEED OF 15 CLASSROOMS FOR MORNING AND EVENING USE.

unsafe. It will have

to be demolished.

Authorities of SEIEM

the City Hall agreed

that the provisional

school should be at

the Santa Monica

Sports located 1km

from the current

school.

The facilities of the

Santa Monica Sports

Unit have bathrooms

for girls and boys,

sports courts, parking,

lighting by means of

solar cells, water and

electricity.

EDUCATIONAL COMMUNITIES ARE IN A PROCESS OF SOCIAL RECONSTRUCTION

Due to the damaged infrastructure both schools have declared themselves in a state of demolition.

The response of school authorities and government is unclear, they do not know how long it will take for the relocation and reconstruction of these schools. It is said to be estimated at least three years.

We are trying to create awareness around this terrible environmental tragedy that has misplaced communities and destroyed these children’s lives. We want to help rebuild these schools and communities through strength, care and unity.

To enable the project to build classrooms for the

school of Lic. Benito Juárez in Santa Monica Ocuilan

the estimated cost is:

Number of classrooms: 15

Cost per class 9,500 EUR (approx)

Total cost of classrooms: 135,000 EUR

Freight: 4,500 EUR

Other expenses: 4,500 EUR

Total cost: 144,000 EUR

We are currently evaluating different models of classrooms while working with communities to implement social reconstruction processes.

Once SEPs and state governments reconstruct the primary school, these classrooms may be devoted to other uses such as community education or a non-profit organisation.
