This Thanksgiving weekend, millions will hit our nation's roads, eager to spend time with family and friends. It’s one of the busiest travel times of the year, and unfortunately more people on the roadways means the potential for more vehicle crashes. During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend in 2015 (6 pm on Wednesday, November 25, to 5:59 am on Monday, November 30), there were 301 passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes across the nation. Want To Reduce Crime and Crashes in Your Community?

Ask Me About DDACTS

(Data Driven Approach to Crime and Traffic Safety)

Data-Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety is a law enforcement model that integrates community-based collaboration with analysis of location-based crime and traffic crash data to determine how to effectively deploy law enforcement and other resources.

Drawing on the deterrent value of highly visible traffic enforcement and the knowledge that crimes often involve motor vehicles, the goal of DDACTS is to reduce crime, crashes, and traffic violations, improving the quality of life in every community.

Using geo-mapping to identify “hot spots” – areas of high incidence of crimes and crashes – DDACTS uses targeted traffic enforcement strategies that play dual roles by simultaneously fighting crime and reducing crashes and traffic violations.

The DDACTS Operational Guidelines describe seven guiding principles for successful implementation. The DDACTS Implementation Workshop, a 16-hour intensive workshop designed for law enforcement agencies interested in adopting the DDACTS model, provides focused technical assistance by guiding participants on the theories and applications behind each of the seven DDACTS guiding principles, identifying key roles within their agency and neighborhoods, and developing a DDACTS Implementation Action Plan to achieve outcomes. To inquire about participating in a free Workshop near you, please contact NHTSA Region 2 Law Enforcement Liaison Michael Morris ([email protected]) or New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety Law Enforcement Liaison Paul Kaminsky ([email protected]).

Are Your Tires Ready for Winter?

Because safety is our top priority, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Department of Transportation want to make sure you have the tools to avoid being in one of those 11,000 crashes. TireWise is your resource to help you make smart decisions to keep you and your family safe, whether you’re in the market to buy new tires or want to extend the life and safety of the ones on your car or truck.

To help you in buying tires, NHTSA has rated more than 2,400 tire lines, including most used on passenger cars, minivans, SUVs and light pickup trucks. The Uniform Tire Quality Grading System (UTQGS) lets you compare tire treadwear, traction performance, and temperature resistance. To get started, choose a tire brand from the drop-down menu below. And be sure to check out NHTSA's TireWise site for more important information.

Ice & Snow – Clean It Before You Go!

Remember to remind your residents to remove all ice and snow from their vehicle before driving, especially from the hood, windows and roof. It’s the law in New Jersey! Motorists who fail to do so face fines of $25 to $75 for each offense, regardless of whether the ice and snow is dislodged from the vehicle. If flying ice or snow causes property damage or injury to others, motorists face fines of $200 to $1,000 for each offense. There are approximately 500 fatalities in the United States per year due to icy road conditions.

Simple Winter Car Care Tips

Clean any corrosion from battery posts and cable connections and wash all surfaces with battery terminal cleaner or a solution of baking soda and water. Have the battery checked by a professional to ensure it is strong enough to face cold weather.

Replace worn windshield-wiper blades. Use cold-weather windshield washer solvent and carry an ice-scraper.

Inspect all lights and bulbs and replace burned out bulbs. Clean road grime or clouding from all lenses.

Check tire pressures once a month when tires are cold, before driving for any distance. In extreme climates, a set of winter snow tires may be a wise investment.

Fatalities Jump 5.6% in 2016

The numbers are in and NHTSA reports 37,461 people lost their lives on U.S. roadways in 2016. This represents an increase of 5.6% from 2015, after an 8.4% spike from 2014 to 2015 .The perennial problems of booze, belts and speed still top the list of factors contributing to traffic deaths.

Drunk driving and speeding were involved in 28% and 27% of fatalities, respectively. And almost half (48%) of the passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2016 with known restraint use were not buckled up.

Pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities are at their highest numbers since 1990 and 1991, respectively. Pedestrian fatalities increased by 492, a 9% increase and one that GHSA predicted in its March 2017 spotlight publication.

Looking at trends over time, the biggest change in the past decade has been the growth in the proportion of non vehicle occupant fatalities (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.), which now represent nearly one in five traffic deaths, compared to 13% in 2007.

2018 NHTSA Region 2 Child Passenger Safety Technical Conference

March 19- 21, 2018 The Region 2 CPS Conference is the largest training, education and advocacy event in the United States dedicated solely to protecting children in vehicles. As you know, technical training and outreach are key elements in sustaining an active, vibrant CPS network. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and Instructors (CPST/CPST-I) receive continuing education credits through the Region 2 Conference, and gain knowledge of current best practices in reaching multicultural populations, analyze data to best focus media efforts, and convey crash dynamics to educate key local leaders.
