Edition Peters, with its three of fices in Leipzig, London and New York, has always had a truly international approach to music. Continuing the tradition, 2018 sees the company launch many projects sourced from a richly diverse range of cultures and countries.

We begin with the launch of The Silk Road Series, a groundbreaking co-publication with our partners in China, the Central Conservatoire of Music Press in Beijing. Eight of China’s leading contemporary composers have contributed major works to the series, inspired by the Silk Road. And fittingly, Leipzig – where the Peters story began in 1800 – is now on the New Silk Road (“Belt and Road”).

Leipzig provides the powerful music included in our Peters East German Library 1949 – 1990. The years in which Germany, and the publishing house itself, were divided between East and West form an important chapter in the company’s story. The output of composers from the East German firm – then known as VEB Edition Peters, Leipzig – forms a unique and valuable part of the company’s identity and, more widely, of European cultural history, making this repertoire well worth rediscovering. Additionally, as a city inextricably associated with J.S. Bach, Leipzig links to The Orgelbüchlein Project: a 21st-century completion of Bach’s Orgelbüchlein.

From the New Silk Road we travel to South America with La Voz Latina – a project eagerly awaited by choral directors around the world. This landmark project has been years in development, and will provide an amazingly rich new of fering of previously unavailable music for choirs. Our Latin theme continues with Tango Canción. Tango is surely one of the most passionate and popular musical forms, and this new collection brings together some of the most famous tunes in new arrangements for voice and piano.

Back in Europe we continue our commitment to new Urtext editions, renewing and extending some of the most important sections of the Edition Peters catalogue. Highlights this year include the release of the next volumes in The Complete Chopin – A New Critical Edition, and new editions of the keyboard music of J.S. Bach and Liszt. 2018 also brings the completion of our award-winning Fauré Songs edition: the first ever serious critical assessment and Urtext edition of this inspirational and essential repertoire for singers.

Finally, with more than the score… we explore the exciting link between print and digital products from a truly global perspective. This series uses exclusive content available in the Piano Masterworks collection on the Tido Music platform. This rapidly growing library of video performances, masterclasses and digital editions, enhanced with audio recordings and enlightening contextual articles on the composers and their music, now boasts over 100 Edition Peters volumes of essential piano music – a truly amazing resource for all pianists. Edition Peters is without doubt the vocal music publisher of choice for singers around the world, and has now released vocal digital editions on the two latest collections on the Tido platform: Vocal Masterworks and Educational Vocal. The first titles released in digitally-enhanced editions with audio include the iconic Arie Antiche and Vaccai’s Metodo Pratico, together with hundreds of Lieder and chansons. A great start for singers of all levels.

We hope you find something to enjoy from the music of our world tour!

PIANO SOLO

The first important set of J.S. Bach’s mature keyboard suites, the six English Suites demonstrate his mastery of dance forms and rhythmic impetus within a highly decorative texture.

This new Urtext edition by Ulrich Bartels is based on all relevant sources and contains a detailed critical commentary.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Sonata for Piano in A major K331 (300i) | Urtext Edition New edition based on the recently-discovered autograph manuscriptBy Klaus BurmeisterEP 11506 | ISMN 979-0-014-12701-5 | £5.95 | €6.95

This new Urtext edition of Mozart’s Piano Sonata in A major K331 (300i), with the famous final Rondo “Alla turca”, draws on a recently-discovered autograph source to create a version which has substantial differences – particularly in the six variations and the Menuetto – to earlier editions.

In the preface, the editor, Klaus Burmeister, considers this new edition within the history (dating back to 1784) of printed editions of the sonata, specifically at Edition Peters. Burmeister also pays particular attention to Mozart’s typical use of articulation marks, passed down to him by his father Leopold.

Johann Sebastian Bach

French Suites BWV 812 – 817 and French Overture BWV 831 | New Urtext EditionBy Ulrich BartelsEP 11443 | ISMN 979-0-014-11977-5 | £17.95 | €19.95

The French Suites represent Bach at his most elegantly decorative, composed with a lightness of touch and quiet nobility. For the first time this new edition of Bach’s French Suites (BWV 812 – 817) pairs these works with the large-scale French Overture in B minor (BWV 831) from the second part of the Clavier-Übung.

The player is provided with as clear and comprehensible a score as possible, which makes it easier to practise the work. Performers wishing to take a more academic approach can refer to the Editorial Report for a documentation of sources, editorial additions and ornaments, of a comprehensiveness normally found only in critical complete editions.

A new edition of this masterwork of 19th-century Romantic piano music, edited by Dr Leslie Howard as part of his ongoing series of new editions of the piano music of Liszt.

At the heart of the Romantic movement was the connexion of art and nature, and it is these works by Liszt that perhaps most epitomize this aim. As Liszt himself wrote:

Having recently travelled to many new countries, through different settings and places consecrated by history and poetry; having felt that the phenomena of nature and their attendant sights did not pass before my eyes as pointless images but stirred deep emotions in my soul, and that between us a vague but immediate relationship had established itself, an undefined but real rapport, an inexplicable but undeniable communication, I have tried to portray in music a few of my strongest sensations and most lively impressions.

Chopin’s Rondos – which include his first ever published work – date from his youth and formative years, but already show many of the distinctive traits of the composer’s mature style that transcend mere virtuosity. The Rondo in

C, better known in the version for piano duet, is presented here in the autograph scoring for piano solo. This critically revised new edition invites performers to rediscover and re-evaluate these often underrated works.

EDVARD GRIEGA N D H I S P U B L I S H E R

As we celebrate this Grieg anniversary year, it seems fitting to reflect upon the unique and defining relationship that the composer had with the owners of the Leipzig publishing house of C.F. Peters throughout his life. This remarkable story is documented in over 400 letters between Grieg and Max Abraham and Henri Hinrichsen, the family owners of C.F. Peters, written between 1863 and the composer’s death in 1907. Max Abraham spotted the prodigious talent of Grieg very early on, when the composer had only just graduated from the Leipzig conservatoire, and published Grieg’s Opus 1 and 2 in 1863. From that point on, a lasting friendship was nurtured and developed. Grieg of ten referred to Max Abraham as his “adoptive father” and he was certainly a guiding and supportive friend to Grieg throughout his life.

Every year Grieg would visit the owners of C.F. Peters in their wonderful commercial and residential building in Talstrasse 10, Leipzig. In his own special quiet room at the top of this magnificent house – designed by Otto Brückwald, the architect of the Bayreuth Festspielhaus – Grieg loved to compose. Some of his most famous music was written in these quiet and supportive conditions, including his popular Peer Gynt Suite No. 1.

Grieg brought immense success to C.F. Peters, although the company also worked very hard to promote Grieg’s music. Grieg wrote to Max Abraham in 1884:

What on earth are you doing with my compositions … to make them so popular! Not a week passes without my receiving so many letters … that I can hardly answer them all. Delightful, but too much of a good thing!

To mark this anniversary year, we are releasing a new Urtext edition of the Piano Concerto, Opus 16. Sales of the work on its release can only be described as stratospheric and to this day it remains one of the most performed concertos.

The Peters Germany company is now back home in Leipzig in Talstrasse 10, and the family dining room on the first floor has been fully restored as it was in Grieg’s time. It is open to the public as the Grieg Museum. You are warmly welcome to visit us at Talstrasse 10 and experience just a little taste of Grieg’s time in Leipzig with C.F. Peters.

ORGAN

The Orgelbüchlein Projec t is a collec tive composition project aiming to complete Bach’s unfinished manuscript known as “Orgelbüchlein”. In this “Little Organ Book”, Bach laid out a complete hymnal of short organ chorales, 164 in all, but only completed 46 of them. Why the remaining 118 were left as blank pages, with only a title at the head, remains a mystery, but they inspired organist William Whitehead to found The Orgelbüchlein

Project, in which contemporary composers are invited to contribute a piece to complete the book. The resulting collection, to be published in six volumes, represents a cross-section of the most interesting composers at work today across Europe and beyond.

More information about the project is available at www.orgelbuechlein.com.

Sight-reading is one of the most important yet neglected skills for any musician, and an important component of Associated Board and other music exams. Right@Sight for violin contains a carefully graded sequence of around 60 pieces, helping students master the art of sight-reading. The

mnemonic TRaK (Time-signature, Rhythm and Key) system and student/teacher duets encourage a disciplined approach and confident playing. Right@Sight contains everything a violinist needs to develop sight-reading skills both during and between lessons.

J.S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin have been regarded as a pinnacle of the violin repertory virtually since they were composed. During the 19th century they were introduced to a larger concert public by Joseph Joachim. Now they are regarded as everything that a set of works is capable of being: superb concert repertory, superb

material for students to work at, and, not least, superb examples of compositional techniques. The aim of this edition is to encourage viola players to become more familiar with these great works, and at the same time help them interpret Bach’s ambiguous performance markings as a string player of the period would have done.

A Grand Tour of Cello Technique A practice guide for the modern cellist EP68550 | ISMN 979-0-3007-5978-4 | £21.95 | €24.95

This is a scale book of unprecedented scope. Simon Fischer has developed an entirely new method in which, using the traditional ways of practising scales only as a point of departure, he focuses on numerous often-neglected aspects of the violist’s technique. For every element he has designed exercises that sensitize the ear, stimulate the mind and build the playing apparatus of the violist.

The many outstanding features of this book include:

• how to structure intonation around perfect intervals and leading notes

• a new approach to learning how to time shif ts

• extensive notation for preparing and holding down fingers

• one-, two-, three- and four-octave scales and arpeggios

• two-octave scales and arpeggios on one string

• new sequences for single-finger scales

Many well-known Fischer classics are also incorporated, including practice methods for intonation, smooth bowing, string crossing, fast fingers, fourth-finger extensions and placing fingers in blocks. The innovative and wide-ranging material in Scales keeps the player turning the pages, discovering yet more exciting ways to approach scales. The wealth of thought-provoking exercises encourages violists to re-evaluate their practice – developing their playing skills at all levels from intermediate to professional.

A Grand Tour of Cello Technique is a thought-provoking practice guide, enabling cellists at all levels to develop their own style through an exploration of different ways of fingering and bowing. The book not only helps cellists improve their playing, but also promotes an understanding of musical art, through nine stimulating chapters:

• Introducing Twelve Tones

• Triads and Seventh Chords

• Circle of Fif ths

• Scales

• Metronome Games

• Harmonics and Open Strings

• Lateral Motion

• Extended Techniques and a Discussion of the Bow

• Practicing Together

With a particular emphasis on music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and its connections with earlier music, Fred Sherry takes the reader on a voyage of discovery of the art and science of cello technique, informed by music ranging from Bach all the way through to Berio.

Fred Sherry (b. 1948) is an American cellist who is particularly admired for his work as a chamber musician and concert soloist. He studied with Leonard Rose at the Juilliard School before winning the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1968. He has appeared as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New Japan Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. He currently serves on the faculty at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, and Mannes College The New School for Music.

Despite its enduring popularit y in the 18th century, this beautiful and majestic work was never published but survives through more than 50 manuscript copies scattered across Europe. It is a remarkable work which can justly be described as one of the most important orchestral Requiem settings of the 18th century.

Edited by Stephen Darlington, Director of Music at Christ Church, Oxford, who has recorded the work with Christ Church Cathedral Choir, soloists from The Sixteen, and Oxford Baroque.

A 10 minute setting of Rabindranath Tagore’s famous love poem for SSAATTBB choir with optional parts for Carnatic singer, Indian violin,

sitar, veena & Indian percussion. Commissioned by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and premiered in 2017.

Cantus Maris, for mezzo-soprano soloist, chorus and orchestra, is conceived as a kind of Sea Requiem, setting texts from the psalms and from ancient Irish and Celtic texts. As the composer

states: “The music and words articulate some existential, metaphorical journey across the sea of life and through the dangers attending our human passage on its ever-changing face”.

CHORAL

A Time to Dance, a cantata for SATB soloists, choir and orchestra, celebrates the “times” and “seasons” of human existence. The words are drawn from a wide range of sources including Aphra Behn, William Blake, Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson, John Donne, Ernest Dowson, Christopher Marlowe, Christina Rossetti, and Edward Thomas. The

music uses the same orchestral forces as J.S. Bach’s Magnificat, and is composed so that it can be played on period instruments or on modern instruments. The work is recorded by Ex Cathedra, conducted by Jeffrey Skidmore, and is available on CD and as a digital download on the album “A Time to Dance” on the Hyperion label (CDA68144).

OPERA

Höstsonaten – Autumn Sonata is a multilayered and powerful relationship drama. Its protagonists meet up in the dark hours of the night and end up having to question the choices they’ve made and their consequences. Underlying the drama, we have the eternal themes of forgiveness and the ability to accept other people as they are. – Sebastian Fagerlund

This major new operatic work was premiered in September 2017 by Finnish National Opera in Helsinki with Anne Sofie von Otter (mezzo soprano), Erika Sunnegårdh (soprano), Helena Juntunen (soprano), Tommi Hakala (baritone), Nicholas Söderlund (bass) and the Finnish National Opera Orchestra and Choir conducted by John Storgårds. Future performances are planned in Stockhom and Malmö during the year.

This long-awaited revised edition of the bestselling book The Art of Auditioning is essential reading for every aspiring and professional singer and contains:

• authoritative advice on how to approach and prepare for your auditions

• a directory of more than 200 recommended audition arias

• an extensive index of operatic arias, listed by composer and voice-type

• information about what to expect af ter your first successful audition and how to prepare for professional engagements.

Anthony Legge has worked regularly with the principal British opera companies, Opera Australia, many European opera companies and at Bayreuth, for The Ring Cycle and Die Meistersinger. He spends much time on audition and competition panels. His experience as a conductor, accompanist and vocal coach has given him a broad overview of the profession.

Having won many competitions and survived many auditions – and now singing all over the world, including 250 performances of the role of Violetta, and having had the thrill of singing with Placido Domingo – I can recommend this book as an invaluable guide for achieving success. – Ermonela Jaho, International Soprano

EAST GERMAN LIBRARY

Throughout its long and eventful history, Edition Peters has consistently sought to support contemporary music, making it accessible in high-quality scores. The years in which Germany, and the publishing house itself, were divided between East and

West form an important chapter in the company’s story.

The output of composers from the East German firm – then known as VEB Edition Peters, Leipzig – forms a unique and valuable part of the company’s identity and, more widely, of European cultural history. Their works are compositionally and aesthetically diverse, while sharing a communicative creative drive. The artistic independence of the music created in East Germany between

1949 and 1990 makes this repertoire well worth rediscovering.

SILK ROAD LIBRARY

From its very beginnings (c. BC 130) during the Han Dynasty of China to its closure in the mid-15th century, the original Silk Road defined the shape of the commercial and cultural landscape of the ancient and medieval world.

The rich array of goods traded between East and West was diverse and not just limited to the Chinese silk so beloved by the Romans, as the term “Silk Road” – first coined by German cartographer and traveller, Ferdinand von Richthofen, in 1877 – might seem to suggest. In fact, the goods traded to the West included tea, dyes, precious stones, porcelain, medicine, perfumes, ivory, rice, paper and gunpowder. In return, demand in the East was predominantly for horses, grapevines, animal furs and skins, honey, fruits, glassware, woollen blankets and other textiles, as well as weapons and armour.

However, just as important as the commercial trade of the Silk Road was the exchange of ideas in the areas of philosophy, art, science, language, technology, and of course music, which played such a pivotal role for the development of the world as we know it today.

Working with our partners at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China, Edition Peters is delighted to announce a new landmark project: the Edition Peters Silk Road Library. A select group of China’s leading contemporary composers has been commissioned to compose a range of orchestral works inspired by the cultural exchange and rich legacy of the Silk Road, looking forward to the new “Belt and Road” project of the 21st century that will once again link East and West. Leipzig, the historic home of Edition Peters, sits proudly on this New Silk Road. The project will launch in July 2018, with the release of the first eight orchestral scores.

transcriptions, very much in the tradition of Kreisler.

In this CD release, we hear a master musician at work, bringing a freshness and vitality to these challenging and rewarding works by Brahms.

Daniel Grimwood is one of the most original musicians of his generation. With a repertoire ranging from Elizabethan virginal music to composers of the modern day, he is a pianist of rare versatility, whose exceptional talent is internationally renowned.

Grimwood relishes the liquid harmonic movement and rich textural elaborations of Fauré’s ruminative, often dark pieces with poise and refinement; even when things get busy, the sound colours are beautiful.– Stephen Pettitt, Sunday Times

Gabriel Fauré found per fect inspiration for his own intensely emotional and often highly charged compositional style in Paul Verlaine’s perfumed poetry, producing some 17 songs over seven years that both enchanted and perplexed his friends and colleagues. The five “Venice” songs (Op 58) led some to suggest that Fauré should find another source, but he ignored them and,

spurred by his devotion to the soprano Emma Bardac, created the ecstatically romantic cycle La Bonne Chanson (Op 61). Both sets are sung herewith an exhilarating, passionate urgency by the American tenor Tony Boutté, expertly supported by pianists Emily Kilpatrick and Roy Howat, editors of a new edition of these classic art songs. – The Guardian

Daniel Grimwood shines a light on the music of Adolph von Henselt, one of the most admired Romantic composers and piano virtuosi of the 19th century, whom Schumann called the “hero of the pianoforte”, whose works have nevertheless been largely forgotten in the last 100 years. The album presents a rare collection of pieces, recorded in Schwabach in Germany, Henselt’s birthplace.

Pianist Daniel Grimwood is a performer of international renown, combining an exceptional talent, rare versatility and refinement of technique, with an inquisitive and creative personality.

Titanic variations, lilting waltzes, thundering impromptus and reflective nocturnes send the senses reeling in a blizzard of dazzling pianism.– Stephen Pritchard, The Observer

The Choir of Royal Holloway is one of the finest mixed-voice collegiate choirs in Britain. Its first recording on Edition Peters Sounds brings together the music, atmosphere and ethos of Christmas at Royal Holloway in the Chapel, celebrating with both sacred and secular music.

The album presents a broad mix of old and new, complete with contemporary arrangements of familiar carols and pieces from the Baltic states. Several pieces have not been recorded before, including an upper voice setting of William Blake’s

The Lamb by American composer George Whitefield Chadwick. New contemporary arrangements include Away in a manger by the Norwegian-born composer Ola Gjeilo. There are three arrangements by Royal Holloway musicians: O little one sweet (by a Royal Holloway choral scholar), Silent Night (by Rupert Gough) and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (by a former choral scholar). Also previously unrecorded are original compositions by James Burton and Rihards Dubra.
