Presidents Report

Bayside Mayor, Councillor Laurie Evans joined us last week and provided an interesting insight into Local Government. It is Laurie’s second time in the Mayor’s Chair albeit last time when it was the City of Sandringham in 1990 – 1991.

Laurie has been a local resident for many years and is well known to a number of our members. He certainly is a busy man, for as Chairman David mentioned on Thursday, Laurie is a founding member of the Sandringham Aged Care Associ-ation Inc (SACA), a committee member of Bayside Early Years Community Education and Care (BEYCEC), a commit-tee member of the Sandringham Foreshore Association (SFA), a member of the Advisory Group to Kids Like Us (KLU), a member of the Brighton Bathing Box Association (BBBA) and an advisory member to Marine Environment Sci-ence and Community Centre (MESAC).

Despite all Laurie’s commitments he still had time to play at Royal Melbourne on Monday.

In regard to the Bayside Mayoral Golf Day (consistently our biggest fundraiser each year), John McMillan and Sandring-ham Rotary, together with Jim O’Brien, Peter Flude and Rob Fenton have done a magnificent job in filling the field this year and together with some new sponsors, 2014 could be a rec-ord.

Peter Flude has confirmed that both Lexus and Red Hill win-ery T’Gallant have signed on for the next two years as major sponsors.

year’s District Governor of District 9600 and sent our do-nation towards the floods in the Solomon Islands.

Kathy Every and Jean Stringer attended the meeting on Thursday evening and John Manks introduced another prospective member Tim Atkins. Tim is a local physio-therapist who established Physiofirst Bayside in Keys Street Beaumaris in 1997.

Roy Seager had received a call from Suzy Thorpe who indicated she would like to attend Thursday night’s meet-ing until guests arrived at her place at the last minute. Suzy rang Roy to apologise for her late withdrawal and mentioned that she is keen to be involved with a Rotary Club after providing a venue for a club’s meeting in a previous business venture. Hopefully Suzy will be at a meeting soon.

Well done to Megan who has booked a stall at the Moth-er’s Day Stall at the church in Park Road Cheltenham on Saturday, March 10 to sell jewellery. The stall is adver-tised on the billboard at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. This is another opportunity to not only promote Rotary but add to the increasing amount of funds generated by the sale of jewellery. Charmaine, Louise, Penny Culshaw, Heather D’Arcy, Rewa and Megan will provide the neces-sary stall staffing. Thank you all.

This week Fred and the International Team will bring us up to date on all things Sabu and it appears there will be a few visitors including Ken and Joan Dugan and Mal-colm and Rhonda Cosgriff. Malcolm is well known to most members, having operated the pharmacy in East Concourse for many years.

See you there,

Robert

Thank You for Jewellery Making Day

Just wanted to say thank you to Heather for her wonder-ful teaching and hospitality. What a great day we had not only making beautiful earrings and bracelets but hav-ing a great chat and get together. We made 20 earrings and 12 bracelets! All beautiful and different. This is fantastic given I had only a few earrings for next week sale at Sandy Hospital.

Thanks for helping finalise pricing as well. I really do appreciate your input. Once again a special thank you to our teacher Heather who is so patient and encouraging. Susan

This Week’s Speaker; Bayside Mayor, Councillor Laurie Evans Topic; On Being Mayor Cr Laurence Evans was elected to Council in No-vember 2012. He was a councillor with the former City of Sandringham in 1984-1991 and Mayor of Sandringham in 1990-1991. Cr Evans has lived in Bay-side all his life, as has his parents , grandparents and great grandparents. Cr Evans is married to Jenny (pictured below right at the Golf Day) with 3 children and 5 grandchildren. He has a strong passion for the foreshore and the natural and built environment and a deep commit-ment to the community of Bayside in all age groups. Cr Evans is a founding member of the Sandringham Aged Care Association Inc (SACA), a committee charged with running Fairway Hostel, a ‘Not for Profit’ 62 bed hostel for the Aged, a Committee Member of Bayside Early Years Community Educa-tion and Care (BEYCEC), a committee member of the Sandringham Foreshore Association (SFA), a member of the Advisory Group to Kids Like Us (KLU), a member of the Brighton Bathing Box Asso-ciation (BBBA) and an advisory member to Marine Environment Science and Community Centre (MESAC). For the financial year 2012/13 Cr Evans represent-ed Bayside City Council on the following commit-tees: Association of Bayside Municipalities MAV Environment Committee Chairman of the Recreation and Open Space Community Engagement Forum Laurie spoke about what drove his interest in Local Government, a passion for the interests of the young and the aged, community and the foreshore. It was the Council decision to get out of the first two areas which so upset him that he decided to have a second go at local politics. He views himself as non-political and will only swap preferences with those he regards as serious candi-

dates not so-called “dummies”. Similarly, he does not believe in a vote swapping approach to deciding the issues before Council preferring to take his own stand on each issue on its merits. It is clear that he regards the establishment of the Fairway Hostel, in association with Cr. Leslie Falloon, as one of the standouts of his community career; from virtually no money to a 62 bed facility with $11 million in assets and $20 million in bonds. Laurie credo as Mayor is to try and ensure that at all times the Councillors respect each other, their staff and the public in their dealings with each other. While being passionate about community is im-portant this does not need to lead to a lack of re-spect. Communication is another of Laurie’s key priorities. He understands that Council often is involved in complex decisions involving many parties and it will be difficult to please everyone. The State Govern-ment’s sale of the Willis Street land near Hampton Station was a Case Study where not all the interest groups believed they were properly involved. How-ever, communication can also be a two way street. No matter how hard you try you cannot get every-thing right. Laurie’s talk and his attendance at the Golf Day re-inforced the ongoing strong links between BCC and RCOB.

2014 Bayside Mayoral Charity Golf Day

The 32nd Bayside Mayoral Charity Golf Day was a re-sounding success . The weather was kind, the attend-ance excellent and the hospitality of the Royal Mel-bourne Golf Club up to its usual high standards. Clearly some of the participants struggled with the high standard of the course as many rolled back to the club house in the twilight! However, all seemed delighted with their experience. As usual the well organised teams from the RCOB and RCOS made sure everything ran as smoothly as possi-ble as they processed about 160 golfers out on to the course. The success did not only end there as Heather Chisolm won the Ladies Longest Drive and Joan Dugan the La-dies Overall in the Afternoon session. In the evening a number of the workers from both Rotary clubs adjoined to a Malaysian restaurant in Black Rock for some well earned Fellowship. All that we await now is to find out the final tally of the audited accounts but all the portents are that it will be highly successful on that scorecard as well.
