NEW HORIZON MUN -2019 is the fourth edition of MUN and is bigger and better

than ever. This year we have six committees and the first double delegation at NHMUN. The theme of this year’s conference is “Peace in our time", an evergreen dialogue of

Tony Stark which resonates with the nature of the committees – historic and futuristic.

“Spectacular achievement is always preceded by meticulous preparation.” On the 24thof July, 2019, PRE-MUN preparations commenced in full swing. The management, staff, logistics and selected delegates were able to carry forward the proceedings of each committee smoothly. The various schedules were set up, written material was organized and moderators were guided thoughtfully. Our ex-horizonites, Nidhi Nair, the Director General and Ariyamala Sivakumar, the Undersecretary General, briefed the delegates and logistics about their duties and designated committees. The main issues briefed by Ariyamala included the importance of teamwork with co-delegates, crises and ways of handling them, finalizing agendas and countries. Nidhi Nair stressed on foreign policies. She also directed the logistics and the moderators. As the day came to an end, the preparations instilled motivation in the minds of the young delegates who looked forward to the conference the following day.

The opening ceremony began with full vigor as the Chief Guest and the dignitaries were welcomed. The school choir sang a melodious prayer to invoke the blessings of the Almighty. The lamp was lit by the dignitaries. Mrs.Anupama Sethi, Principal, New Horizon Public School, welcomed all the delegates and spoke about the importance of MUN.

Dr. Rajdeep Manwani, a scholar, trainer and a motivational speaker inspired the gathering with his speech. He stressed on the importance of communication and how one’s content should match with one’s intent. Dr Rajdeep also highlighted the importance of being patient. He said, "One must speak from the heart to express and not to impress." He engaged the audience with funny anecdotes and heartbreaking truths.

The Historic Security Council of NHMUN 2019, is a double delegation, semi-crisis committee. Agenda: Korean War As a product of the Cold War between Soviet Union and the USA, a socialist state was established in the North, under the communist leadership of Kim Il-sung and a capitalist state in the South, under the anti-communist leadership of Syngman Rhee. They are now on the brink of a war.

Keeping this as their agenda, the delegates had to express their country’s point of view and their contributions to the situation. The commission started off with the General Speaker’s List where each country was given a time limit of 90 seconds to describe their country’s stance on the agenda being discussed. We had countries such as The United States of America, U.S.S.R, Vietnam, Ecuador, Republic of China and Democratic People’s Republic of Korea expressing their views.

The delegates resumed the session with a heated debate over yet another crisis update. The crisis update stated that the South Korean markets have been flooded with fake currencies leading to a situation of abnormal inflation. The delegates worked diligently towards solving the crisis and tried their best to work with the given information.

Agenda: Breakthrough in technology to attain sustainable development. In the age of growing technology, Artificial Intelligence has become one of the prominent aspects of discussion. It has several advantages and applications along with its own set of disadvantages-ethical or otherwise. The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development laid down the regulations for the advancement of the future of science and technology. The agenda of the session was the propagation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics and regulations. The discussion revolved around application of AI in developed countries like the USA. A number of advantages of the AI were highlighted during this period, for example, the delegate of Latvia explained that the economy could be boosted with the introduction of AI. This was followed by the commencement of the General Speaker’s List. The delegates of Iran, Ecuador, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Japan, Oman and Nigeria were recognized. This was followed by a press conference in which the delegates of The United States of America, UK, China, Nigeria, Germany and Iran were questioned about their state policies and international relations.

Drug trafficking is one of the most serious problems faced by nations all over the world. Historically speaking, illegal drug trade began around the 19th century. To curb this problem an International Summit on drugs and crime was established.

The International Summit on Drugs and Crime of the NHMUN-2019 is a crisis committee addressing the threat of transnational organized crime in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It also aims at curbing the manufacturing and distribution of fraudulent medicines or drugs. Agenda: Combating drug trafficking, money laundering and organized crime with special focus on Central and South America. The executive board consisted of Rishab Jain, Director, Dhanush Srinivas and Kripal Gowda as Assistant Directors and Prarthana Kini as moderator of ISDC. The existing crisis was updated and it became clear that the assassination attempt on Pablo Escobar failed and that he fled into the forest with his whereabouts unknown. At that point an anonymous source claimed that the fugitive Pablo had escaped to Cuba while another claimed that he was in the same forest. The delegates however remained skeptical about the authenticity of the sources. The delegates were given opportunities to discuss the crisis in depth. Cross-questioning and heated arguments made the event more interesting.

“When crises and deadlock occur, they force us to think”

Agenda: Third Arab-Israeli war. The Executive Board consisted of Akarshan Majumdar as the Director and Ariyamala Sivakumar as the Co-Director. All the delegates were extremely interactive once it was announced that they will have executive powers and will be the heads of their countries. Executive Board asked the delegates not to be intimidated by them but to enjoy themselves. Akarshan Majumdar said that the CCC is like a game of diplomacy rather than a committee. The questions asked by Manasa Reddy, Akshath Bhatia and Vaania Kapoor at the press conference revolved around the future president of The United States of America. A controversial topic surrounding the country of Libya was introduced into the committee. The delegates consistently submitted directives to the Executive Board regarding the same. The crisis ended with delegates giving satisfactory solutions with considerations.

Microsoft Board 2025 is a futuristic committee, where board members of Microsoft were given the task of tackling a loss faced by Microsoft. Agenda: Strategizing for current growth and future sustainability.

The Executive Board consisted of Nidhi Nair, the Chairperson, Anish Cherekar, Vice Chairperson and Soundarya Venkateshan, the moderator. The committee consisted of prominent personalities who work in Microsoft. The first session of the committee started with the General Speaker’s List where many board members got a chance to express their ideas clearly to tackle the situation.

The Executive Board emphasized that they value creativity with logic. A gripping crisis was announced and the delegates started discussing plausible solutions for the crisis .The delegation displayed their analytical skills through logical reasoning. Though the delegates were reluctant to speak, in the beginning, by the end of the session every delegate participated enthusiastically.

Agenda: Achieve gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls in various spheres of life. Women empowerment means emancipation of women from the vicious grips of social, economical, political, caste and gender based discrimination. It means granting women the freedom to make life choices. Education is the basic right of every individual, yet 49.6% of the world’s population is denied this basic right. The agenda of this committee was sustainable development, achieving gender equality and empowering women in all areas of life. The Executive Board consisted of Vaania Kapoor, Director , Punya Sathyanarayan ,Assistant Director and Madhumita Jayashankar , Moderator. The Executive Board requested the delegates to make their directives along with the presidential statements on behalf of the committee they were representing. The presidential statements were hilarious, as the delegates could imitate the accent of their country’s President. The delegates raised questions regarding the updates read out by the Executive Board. There was an interactive session between the delegates and the Executive Board.

Delegates were interviewed by the in-house press members and here are some excerpts from the interviews:

1) “Are you participating in MUN for the first time? What did you learn from the experience?”

➢ “No, it is not my first time but the learning process continues with a lot of new facts and procedures.”

➢ “Yes, it has helped improve my public speaking skills and I feel more confident now.”

➢ “It is my third time in MUN but it is the first time I’m participating in NHMUN and I am not as nervous now when compared to the first time I participated. ”

2) “How did you feel before the MUN took place? How do you feel about it now?”

➢ “I was excited because it was the first Crisis Committee I was representing. I’m not very satisfied with my performance but I hope to win.”

➢ “I was nervous in the beginning, but gradually I gathered courage to speak.”

➢ “I was slightly confused about the situation provided. But I’m satisfied with my performance.”

➢ “I was excited before, but now I think I could have done better.” 3) “Would you like to give your feedback on NHMUN?”

➢ “I liked the way it was organized by the school. Everything went on smoothly.”

➢ “I don’t think there were any flaws. Overall, it was an amazing experience.”

Kripal Gowda, Vice-chairperson of ISDC, was asked a few questions: 1) “How many times have you participated in MUN? Is this the first time you are a member

of the Executive Board?”

➢ “I have participated in seven MUNs and this is my third NHMUN. Yes, this is the first time I am an Executive Board member.”

2) “Were you dissatisfied with anything related to the committee or the organisation?”

➢ “No, the committees were in harmony and the event was well organized.”

We questioned the logistics members as well: 1) How was your experience participating in NHMUN?”

➢ “It was my first time in MUN. It was exciting to see how it was conducted. I learnt many things.”

➢ “It was very interesting to be a part of a Crisis Committee which does not follow procedures strictly. It helped me to learn how to be a diplomat.”

➢ “The director was really efficient.” 2) “How was the temperament of the delegates?”

➢ “I didn’t encounter any rude delegates. Most of them knew what they were speaking about and were able to defend their country well.”
