YaHoo it’s summer … well nearly.

Spring racing has started, it’s great to welcome back our loyal sponsors; Cater Ma-rine as sponsor for the Wednesday night se-ries, Road Runner sponsoring the Rum Races every second Friday night and Anne of Crai-cor and Makana Confections sponsoring the Women’s Series alternative Fridays and our Two Handed Series sponsor Seapower; please do pop into these local businesses and show your appreciation, we really value their sup-port. There have been good fleets in these races with good tight racing and the club is buzzing afterward. Even if you are not rac-ing, come down to watch the start and have a drink (why not stay for the whole race, it’s your club there to be enjoyed!).

We can all be very proud of our club it is looking fantastic, new carpet, new paint, sails set above, thanks to all the helpers in par-ticular Derek and Beryl, hours and hours of painting. Kitchen has been pumping and lots of positive comments on the great new menu. Nice to see more locals at the club and the offshore cruisers are starting to arrive, remem-ber to sign your guests in and encourage your friends to join.

We are working on our club fleet of 420s they will be ready for the planned match racing and available for members to take out during sum-mer, they will also be used for our junior learn to sail and the upcoming women’s learn to sail weekend. Contact Boydie for more details on these centreboard events.

I’m really proud of our incredible commit-tee working hard to create a fantastic club. November will be a busy month with the All

As you may have noticed this year we have required your signature on our membership forms to give us permission to submit your email and postal addresses to Yachting New Zealand. This is because YNZ will be rolling out our Club Membership Cards themselves, together with a free smartphone app which will be posted directly to you together with a brochure outlying your Membership Benefits. Membership Benefits will be added regularly and the App will be a useful tool to keep you informed of developments. All YNZ Membership Benefits are available nationally, by phone or online.YNZ are doing this in an effort to provide more value to Clubs and their Members which will ultimately see savings for indi-vidual boaties and our club will be able to reduce our operating expenditure. All of this is offered to us free.So keep a look out in the post for your new YNZ Opua Cruising Club Membership Card in the post soon.Ruth Walley - Membership Officer

We have had a good start to the summer season with very good numbers in B divi-sion, A division is a bit skinny at times. We are working through the handicaps, so bear with us, we will get there in the end. We do have some boats racing with spinnakers now, where as they weren’t last season and some boats are being sailed a lot better than last summer. The ladies races have had a couple of drifters but we have ordered the wind for the next race... Rum races have had good numbers, must have been due to the prize at the end, thanks to the Roadie. We would also like to recruit more people to start and finish races. All it takes is a bit of commitment. And you will get a drink from the bar as payment. Tempted? Talk to Chris or Wayne. Well, we have moved the furniture in and out so many times this season I have lost count. At last I think we have done our last shift for awhile. Today the new carpet was laid, which looks very nice, this completes our winter interior make-over. Re-hanging the baffles and hanging sails were done to try and help deaden the noise. Walls were stopped and painted because they badly needed it, and the carpet was replaced for the same reason. Many many thanks must go to Derek and his band of helpers for many hours of hard work. Now we need to clean up the outside of the Club. WORKING BEE. Saturday November 7th is the day so come along with water blast-ers, rakes, brooms and enthusiasm. Some of the things that need doing are: *Clean underside of canopy*Clean walls on deck*Water blast deck*De-grease back shed area ( i have had one go already)*Pick up rubbish and tidy shrubs leading to the dock++Plenty more.If you have a spare hour or so, come along, please don’t leave it for the same old few. Andy Vanasche - House

It’s back!Match Racing at OCC – the hottest event on the OCC CalendarThose who remember Match Racing from previous years will know this is an extremely popular event, no doubt thanks to the intoxicating spectacle of these high-speed, white-knuckle sailing machines, piloted by some of the BOI’s ultimate sailing athletes in peak physical condition, battling it out for gold against friends and family members alike. There will be no prisoners. There will be no mercy. Just high-adrenaline, all-action Optimist sailing. And spectating. Lots of spectating. The OCC 420s are finely race-tuned for Saturday 28th, and Sunday 29th November, if we have a good turn out. This will be an all-comers 420 Match Racing event off the OCC dock, starting at 4pm . As a ‘One Class – No Handicap’ event, the result is entirely in the competitors’ hands. Anyone can enter – club members and supporters, men and women, kids and big kids, skippers and crew – anyone! Could you be the top Match Rac-ing sailor in Opua? Come along and find out.Entry is $5 per person (two people per boat and no swapping crew). This event will only take place if the weather is kind to us….

Message from the treasurer

If you have been to your Club recently, you will have seen that a lot has been achieved with voluntary labour and materials dona-tions but the significant cost of the carpet replacement needs donations of money. For this, your donations - however large or small will be tremendous help.Derek Edwards - Treasurer

The BBQ-Picnic Cruises seem to be very popular. Especially when we head to a desti-nation with road access. Donkey Bay was the destination and we all had a great time. Maya and Sophia even swam back to the boat and took several hours to warm up again... See YOU at our next outing! All photos by Vera Hausmann SV Libertee

Work currently in action is the plac-ing of the tie-back wall that is being

formed to support the outside seawall. This is being built with precast concrete panels that are embedded in the seafloor and then in turn supported by blue rock to gain strength before dredgings are then used to back fill the area. Once a portion of the tie-back wall is complete the outer seawall will also start to be built using similar concrete panels. These are then tied to the inner wall with huge steel rods. This is all a challenging part of the project and has thrown a couple of issues at us to resolve. This work continues for some time now with some dredging starting in mid to late November. Other tasks at present are locating services such as power, water and stormwater. The two trailer car parking areas have now been formed along Baffin Street and we would like to encourage boaties to start using these rather than the lower car park. Everyone has been great and we are try-ing to keep the inconvenience to a minimum. Thanks to everyone for their patience.

All Points Rally 2015 & BOI Marina Trade & Community Day2015 sees the seventh running of this FREE event. The Bay of Islands Marina All Points Rally is open to all sailors completing an ocean passage into New Zealand and is held mid-November, at Opua in New Zealand’s favourite Bay of Islands. The All Points Rally closes with the inaugural Bay of Islands Ma-rina Trade & Community Day on Saturday 21st November from 10am – 4pm. This will be held in the top car park along piers A-D. There will be something for everyone from showcasing the local trades that Opua has to offer, sausage sizzles, cake stalls, Rotary car boot sale, Caro’s Crazy Critter Petting Zoo and pony rides, bouncy castle and the Burn-sco kids’ fishing competition…Why don’t you come down (and bring some mates) to check out this fabulous day that Opua has planned!!! KNOW YOUR RULESThe Big Race North By Chris Hornell

COASTAL CLASSIC 2015 ABOARD KIA KAHA As the race draws closer, my iPad is monitored every time there may be a new weather forecast issued; hoping for the never to be seen, yet perfect condition for our boat. 10 to 15 knots southerlies, we believe would give us our best chance. This year we ended up with the opposite, 25 to 30 knots northwesterly. Not all bad, because we don’t go badly upwind. The normal southwesterly reach off, suits our opposition, the canting keelers (Kia Kaha is a fixed keel yacht). On the morning of the race, we tackle the nor-mal sort out of gear to go north by car and make sure we have the correct sails on board. Do we take the light jib or the jib top or the light down wind sails? All to make sure we don’t have too much weight on the boat. We are at the start line still with the normal excitement, but maybe not so much as we may face a 20-hour upwind slog. After a good, clean start, we set our gennaker for the short leg to North Head. Which didn’t go as antici-pated, a bit rusty, and we were passed by Team Beau Geste. By North Head we were second to only Team Beau Geste, once we rounded North Head, it was a tight reach to Tiri Pas-sage. We had V5 hot on our tail and with some local knowledge, they cut the corner at North and managed to get clean air above us and get a line to pass us. As you can expect, I was not so happy… we set our staysail and buckled in for a fast reach (12-13 knots) to Kawau Island. Our bow team of Nich, Greg & Bex did a great job. At Kauwau Island we cut the corner and managed to claw back some time on Team Beau Geste and V5. The wind was very free inshore and further off the coast you got it more on the nose. We stayed right inshore or as we say, on the beach. This really paid of as V5 were out wide and

By Wayne Limbrick

we passed them. Team Beau Geste were still ahead. As we closed in on Sail Rock, the wind was predicted to go further North. Team Beau Geste hit a light patch ahead of us and they decided to tack outside of the Hen & Chicks. We carried on up the beach (Bream Bay). As we listened to the Coast Guard’s Now-Casting , Tutukaka had a 40 degree wind difference to the North to what we had. When we finally got the change and tacked out past Whanga-rei Heads, Team Beau Geste passed two boat length ahead. Then started the 50 mile slog to Cape Brett in 20 to 30 knots. We changed down to number 4 jib and were doing 8.5 to 9 knots. This was the time for the big boys to step up and put their bellies over the rail (Andrew, Dave, Buda, Reece, Simon and me). And we did so for 8 hours… man it took for ever to get to that Cape Brett Light and when we did, Team Beau Geste were 30 minutes ahead and V5 hot on our heels. We cracked off for the reach across Red Head and hoisted a gennaker for the short leg to Russell from Tapeka. There was a lovely moon and we fin-ished at 2 am, V5 three minutes behind us. All in all, a good result, as Team Beau Geste is the latest, hotted up TP52 2015 model – we are 10 years older a 2005 model with mostly local Opua sailors. I would like to say thank you to our very loyal and capable crew, who help make sail like this a lot of fun and that’s why we do it. And thank to the delivery crew of Cees, Lesley, Andrew, Normy & Kevin.

Due to the location of our Opua Racing courses, I thought this was an opportunity to cover Rule 20: Room to Tack at an Obstruction

20.1 Hailing

When approaching an obstruction , a boat may hail for room to tack and avoid a

boat on the same tack . However, she shall not hail if

(a) she can avoid the obstruction safely without making a substantial course change,

(b) she is sailing below closehauled, or

(c) the obstruction is a mark and a boat that is fetching it would be required to

respond and change course.

20.2 Responding

(a) After a boat hails, she shall give the hailed boat time to respond.

(b) The hailed boat shall respond even if the hail breaks rule 20.1.

(c) The hailed boat shall respond either by tacking as soon as possible, or by

immediately replying ‘You tack’ and then giving the hailing boat room to tack and

avoid her.

(d) When the hailed boat responds, the hailing boat shall tack as soon as possible.

(e) From the time a boat hails until she has tacked and avoided the hailed boat, rule

18.2 does not apply between them.

20.3 Passing On a Hail to an Additional Boat

When a boat has been hailed for room to tack and she intends to respond by

tacking, she may hail another boat on the same tack for room to tack and avoid

her. She may hail even if her hail does not meet the conditions of rule 20.1. Rule

20.2 applies between her and the boat she hails.

We have listened and we hope you like it. The committee of the OCC wants to offer to our members and the surrounding commu-nity food that is fresh and varied.

We have been working hard with the Galley caterers to provide meals that reflect your feedback and have really spruced the club up with new carpet and re-decorating.

As well as the club favourites we now have lovely fresh Salads, these can be served with fresh Salmon or Falafels. Tortellini and Asian inspired dishes and a ‘cheap and cheerful’ selection of generously portioned, tasty, rea-sonably priced favourites like Fish & Chips, Pork chops or Steaks.

A Race menu for sailors arriving in the club a little later is proving popular, the concept of this is, warm, quick, tasty, easy to eat and reasonably priced.

Regular specials will be offered to keep it interesting and gauge feedback for inclusion to the main menu.

The kids and dessert menu round off a selec-tion that we are sure will provide something for everyone.

We very much listened and are working hard to continue to improve and be innovative and genuinely reflect the tastes of our community.

A DAY IN THE BAY

This email arrived in September: Members of the Opua Cruising ClubI am looking for some help from a fellow Boat owner.I am currently sponsoring a young family in Dargaville the purpose to allow them to enjoy opportunities otherwise not available to themI have arranged Paihia Accommodation for the family from the 29th September till the 4th October (School Holidays ) the 1st real holiday they have had together outside of their frequent trips to Star ship hospital in Auckland.I was hoping the club may have a member or no somebody who could make their Boat available and assist by Hosting a trip around the inner BOI the owner to decide when and to where. Stuart Sterling Joseph and Sophia’s Blazing Shadz adven-ture

We were really excited to go on the yacht so we got ready early and said to Mum “lets go”. When we arrived at the marina we weren’t really sure where to go but then Mum said I think that’s the yacht.

We unloaded our car of all the stuff we needed and we met Julie. She helped lift us onto the boat because I use a wheelchair and Sophia didn’t want to step over the water.

When we were on board Julie told us things we needed to know like how to flush the toi-let and to be careful not to step on the ropes in case we slipped on them. Pretty soon Julie started the yacht engine because it wasn’t windy enough for sailing.

The water got a lot deeper as we went out and we saw the car ferry crossing and lots of

other boats.

Julie said to keep an eye out for dolphins but we didn’t get to see any that day.

We chugged out to a little cove for lunch and there were other boats there too. Julie made some toasted sandwiches and we had bottles of water. We waved to all the other boats and then we sailed back to the marina because there was enough wind. Julie moved around the yacht really fast to get all the sails up. Julie was really cool and we hope to go on her yacht again.

Thank you from Joseph and Sophia Tebbutt, 9 year old twins
