The year ended with a grand celebration in Puerto Rico. The event took place in San Juan, where in addition to the 2007 vintage other outstanding and representative his-toric vintages of this Cabernet Sauvignon were presented. The tasting revealed the secret of Don Melchor, created from grapes originating in seven lots of the Puente Alto vineyard. The “Puerto Rico Show”, as wine-maker Enrique Tirado who led the tasting called it, was attended by around 100 peo-ple who had the opportunity of appreciat-ing how each of the seven lots contributes to the final 2009 blend of Concha y Toro’s icon wine.

Don Melchor, the Chilean wine industry’s first ultra premium wine, is the only one with 21 vintages to its name, all of them award-winners and distinguished by world wine critics. The wine has obtained some

of the highest scores awarded its category in Wine Spectator Magazine.

In recent years, Don Melchor has excelled in performance and quality worldwide, re-ceiving the highest distinctions in its histo-ry. In 2005, Don Melchor 2001 vintage was ranked fourth in the list of the Top 10 Wines of the World published by the above-men-tioned magazine. In 2006 – and for the sec-ond consecutive year – Don Melchor 2003 was again named the fourth wine of the year in Wine Spectator.

A true milestone in Chilean wine growing history, this red has become Chile’s biggest award-winning wine and is positioned as the great New World benchmark.

At Hotel W Santiago, a new icon Syrah was presented to the specialized press: Gravas del Maipo 2007. During the tasting Gravas del Maipo winemaker Enrique Ti-rado presented the characteristics of this wine. To demonstrate its great versatility, the tasting was followed by a lunch in Osaka restaurant in the same hotel whose specialty is “Nikkei” cuisine. Guests were able to experience the benefits of the wine during a food & wine pairing of six small dishes - Niku Tataki Maki, Inka-gyosa, Maguro Grill in Daikon sauce, Sautéed Sa Ho Fan, Lamb & Foie Gras in Umeboshi sauce and Manchego Tempura.

Located in the southern shore of the Maipo River, Quinta de Maipo Vine-yard is rooted in gravel soils found more than a meter (3 feet) under-ground. It is precisely this stony characteristic of alluvial soils of river basin terraces that impregnates this Syrah with rounded, complex and elegant tannins.

“The first vintage of Syrah Gravas del Maipo 2007 is very elegant and presents great aromatic expression, marked by fruit such as black-berries, raspberries and cassis which blend well with chocolate, ce-dar and dry fruit notes and give the wine complexity and a unique style,” commented Enrique Tirado.

THE BEST SYRAH IN CHILE Just a few months after its launching, Gravas del Maipo be-came Chile’s Best Syrah according to the country’s three most prestigious wine guides.

In “Descorchados 2011” wine guide, wine writer Patricio Tapia awarded the wine 95 points; the 2011 Wine Guide of La CAV Magazine, published by a panel of experts, gave the wine a 94-point score; and the “Women & Wine” guide by wine journalist Ana María Barahona awarded it 95 points.

The reviews won by Gravas del Maipo reflect the impor-tance of this project for the Company and the challenge of positioning Chile as a producer of top quality wines, as well as the constant and passionate search for those terroirs which faithfully express a wine’s character.

In the largest and most important interna-tional wine competition held in Asia, the Ja-pan Wine Challenge 2010 constest, Terrun-yo Carmenere 2007 was distinguished with a Gold Medal. “The 2007 vintage was ex-cellent. A very good year for Concha y Toro reds and Terrunyo Carmenere 2007 proves it. It is an elegant, classic wine from Peu-mo Vineyard, with abundant, intense fruit. It has wonderful quality tannins, smooth and firm. A powerful wine with great stor-age potential,” says Terrunyo winemaker Ignacio Recabarren. This important award

confirms Concha y Toro’s leading work with this variety for over more than a decade.

Throughout its history Terrunyo Carme-nere has received outstanding scores. In Wine Spectator’s annual ranking – Decem-ber 2009 – it was the first time a Carmenere wine was placed among the Top 100 Wines of World, marking the debut of this variety in this influential publication.

It is creamy and has intense aromas. There’s a captivating density of flavors. It is ripe without tiring and at the same time has delicious herbal notes as if to prove the Carmenere is there. It also is, given all the above, an ex-tremely elegant wine, a Carmenere in a tux, and of course, the best among all Carmenere wines in Descorchados this year.”

An excellent review for Marques de Casa Concha Cabernet Sauvi-gnon 2007: it scored 91 points and was ranked number 56 among the 2010 Top 100 in Wine Spectator Magazine. Marques de Casa Concha achieved the best position of all Chilean wines included in this ranking and scored higher than other New World wines from countries such as Argentina.

Each year the magazine editors select the best wines for their rank-ing from all wines reviewed in the past 12 months. The four evalu-ation criteria are quality, price, availability and a surprise factor (or “enthusiasm”). The Top 100 Wines of the World made its debut in 1988 and reflects the most important global wine industry trends.

This is the third time a wine from the Marques de Casa Concha line appears in this prestigious ranking, confirming it the brand’s con-sistency, quality, high scores and important reviews.

Concha y Toro presented in 2010 two new varieties of its Gran Reserva Serie Riberas wine line: Merlot 2008, originating in the Maule river shore and created by winemaker Hector Urzua, and Malbec 2009 form the southern river shore of the Tinguiririca riv-er and made by winemaker Mar-cio Ramírez.

In addition to these new wines, Gran Reserva Serie Riberas launched a publicity campaign

in Chile, achieving excellent brand awareness. The campaign included exhibits in points of sale, magazines and newspapers and communicated the slogan “Discover Concha y Toro’s Great Reserve Wine”, inviting the con-sumer to experience the charac-teristic freshness of these wines, a special selection or premium wines originating in vineyards planted near river shores.

Concha y Toro seals partnership with Manchester United

In a ceremony held at legendary Old Trafford stadium, Manches-ter United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson and Sales Director Richard Arnold met with Concha y Toro President Alfonso Larraín and the company’s Global Brands Marketing Director, Giancarlo Bianch-etti, accompanied by emblematic football players and commu-nications media from every continent.

Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his enthusiasm over the official seal-ing of this alliance, given the similarities between wine and foot-ball. “In football we seek the best young players to develop and form them from their beginnings to make them outstanding Manchester United players. And I have seen a similarity with Con-cha y Toro, which seeks to harvest the best grapes, produce the best wines and have the patience and intelligence to ensure that the end result is perfect,” said Sir Ferguson, who also stressed the tradition of excellence and the values shared by both brands.

Alfonso Larraín said, “This partnership gives us a visibility and unique reach for a wine brand and this is why today is a landmark in our history. At this time when Chile is celebrating its bicente-

nary, we are depositaries as a company of the global recognition that our brand of wines has achieved, reflecting the history of Chilean winemaking throughout our life and capitalizing on the positioning achieved.”

Another activity was the investiture at a gala dinner of some of the British team’s executives and personalities, such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Richard Arnold, as new members of the Casillero del Diablo Brotherhood.

The celebration of Chile’s bicentennial anniversary could not be left out of this important day. Manchester United executives sur-prised the press and winery executives by singing the Chilean National Anthem and flying the Chilean flag from the back of the field.

To put the final seal on this agreement, on September 19 at Old Trafford Concha y Toro was formally introduced as the team’s of-ficial winery to the more than 75,000 spectators present at the Manchester vs. Liverpool match.

The brand posted a growth rate above 15% in 2010 compared to 2009 and was able to consolidate its positioning in major markets while also significantly increasing sales in emerging markets.

This sales growth reflects global interest in the brand as a result of its quality, prestige and excellent distribution throughout the world.

New lighter bottles

Casillero del Diablo is committed to environmental pro-tection and collaborates by implementing the use of new lightweight bottles. These are 13% lighter than normal ones and present no visible changes in format and style. This initiative aims at using less glass to manufacture bot-tles and decreases by more than 2,200 tons per year the use of glass, which in turn translates into less en-ergy use for transport of the Casillero del Diablo line. The initiative will help reduce Casillero del Diablo’s carbon footprint and also that of Concha y Toro.

Following the strategic alliance with British football club Manchester United, Casillero del Diablo launched in Chile a revolutionary, modern publicity spot produced with cut-ting edge technology and a script linking medieval knights to football.

The spot was produced using Motion Capture, a technique that records human actors’ motions and then translates those movements onto a digital model, such as 3D charac-ter animations.

In Chile it is the first spot created with this technology, mak-ing this video a milestone in the history of Chile’s advertis-ing industry.

After its release in Chile’s prime time national television, the new advertisement has been praised and reviewed by the most prestigious internet digital media specialists. The plan is to launch the spot in the 130 countries where Casillero del Diablo is present.

The chosen wine for a “Bicentenary Toast”

Don Melchor TourIn 2010 Don Melchor’s twentieth anniversary was celebrated in differ-ent spots across the world such as Dubai, Moscow and Tel Aviv, where the 2007 vintage as well as other representative vintages of this iconic wine were presented.

Renowned local and international sommeliers participated with guests in the impeccable tastings organized by the Company’s dis-tributors in each region. Gabriel Salas, Concha y Toro sommelier, led the tastings, each held in luxurious hotels.

Casillero del Diablo was the official wine of HSBC Champions Golf tournament which took place on November 4-7, 2010 in Shen-zhen, Shanghai. For the 4th year in a row Casillero del Diablo sponsored the presti-gious golf championship in China, and this year the winner was Francesco Molinari. Casil-lero del Diablo was of course present at all the HSBC Champion’s official events and the new Sparkling Brut was served during a spec-tacular moment in the gala dinner.

Marcelo Papa, Concha y Toro winemaker, had the honor of serving a glass of this wine to the President of Chile, Sebastian Pi-ñera, in the “Bicentenary Toast”, an event attended by more than 200 guests including ambassa-dors and government authori-ties. The Bicentenary Toast com-memorated the event hosted by former President of Chile Emil-iano Figueroa in 1910, when he and about twenty diplomats of that time celebrated the 100th anniversary of republican Chile. “The fact that Marques de Casa Concha was chosen as the em-blematic wine for this event has a

very special meaning for Concha y Toro. This wine fully reflects our Company’s tradition, as since its foundation in 1883 Concha y To-ro has been linked to the coun-try’s history. Marques is wine line which has won over 90-point scores for all its varieties confirm-ing its quality and consistency,” stated Cristián Canevaro, Gener-al Manager of Comercial Peumo.

The event had a symbolic char-acter and the idea was to com-pliment the diplomatic corps for their contribution to the country and its bicentennial celebrations.

Concha y Toro in “Wine for Asia 2010”

In November a wine tasting for clients in Vladivostok, Russia was attended by dis-tributors, restaurant owners and managers of the most important retail chains, as well as by the Chilean Consul in Vladivostok, Na-talia G. Prisekina. The activity for more than 80 guests took place in Orlinoe Gnezdo res-taurant, where they tasted Concha y Toro wines such as Casillero del Diablo, Terrun-yo, Marques de Casa Concha, TRIO, Sunrise and Frontera.

In September Concha y Toro hosted an exclusive event in Madagascar, Africa. The company’s distributor, Royal Spirits, invit-ed 150 guests including ambassadors, res-taurant owners, supermarket managers, wine writers and connoisseurs. The event included a presentation of Casillero del Diablo and Frontera, the best-selling wine brand in Africa. There were several tasting stands for guests and also a successful sale of wines of more than 1,000 bottles in one evening.

Enter the field to win! Is the slogan for a new contest carried out by Frontera wine in Angola, Africa. The competition’s objec-tive is to create awareneness – in a coun-try with strong interest in football – of the alliance of Concha y Toro with famous UK football club Manchester United.

The first stage of the publicity campaign in Angola includes advertisements in pub-lic places and different retail outlets. One of the most striking aspects of this con-test is a novel form awarding prizes using marked corks. This system has been devel-oped at the Plant Lo Espejo and is the first time the winery uses it. The lucky winner will have the opportunity to experience the unique thrill viewing a Manchester United match at Old Trafford stadium, the “Theatre of Dreams”.

In October 2010 the wineries Concha y Toro, Viña Maipo, Trivento, Canepa and Maycas del Limarí participated in the 8th edition of the international trade fair “Wine for Asia 2010” held in the Sands Expo and Convention Center of Singapore. Thirty countries and 377 exhibitors present at the show shared their view of the wine industry. The trade fair aroused a lot of in-terest and was attended by more than 40,000 professionales from 50 countries.

Andrés Ballesteros, Asia Managing Director for Concha y Toro, headed the tasting named “Terroirs of the World: A South American Perspective”. The tasting included the wines Don Melchor, Almaviva and Eolo. In addition, Cristián López, Concha y Toro Asia Corporate Export Manager and Guy Nussey (UK) were present at the fair and met with Company partners in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Maldives and Singapore, who visited Concha y Toro’s stand and were later invited to a dinner cruise with fireworks.

“For Concha y Toro to be chosen consistently a Winery of the Year, and now to rank among the three top Hall of Fame wineries, com-mits us to continue producing outstanding quality wines that can surprise increasingly knowledgeable and demanding global con-sumers,” says Isabel Guilisasti, Fine Origin Wines Marketing Director at Concha y Toro. The Company has climbed to a privileged place in the magazine’s Hall of Fame, which includes those wineries which have been consistently included in this rank-ing year after year.

In 2010 Concha y Toro was again distinguished as Winery of the Year for the 16th time, thanks to its excellent performance winemaking work across all wine lines.

Concha y Toro has been nominated Winery of the Year for the last 15 years in a row. This new distinction places the Company in a unique position shared by only three wineries in the world: Penfold’s 20 times a Winery of the Year and Chateau Ste. Michelle and Concha y Toro named 16 times each.

The magazine highlights the wide range of wines offered by the Company from varietals to ultra premium terroir wines. It also stresses the significant improvement in quality of the Marques de Casa Con-cha line, under the leadership of winemaker Marcelo Papa since 1999. Headed by Papa, these wines have gone a long way compared to

other competitors of the local scene.

This year Wine & Spirits focuses on many wines of the Marques line including the Syrah 2007 vintage from Buin, Alto Maipo. For the Cab-ernet Sauvignon 2007 vintage of this same brand, originating in Puente Alto, the maga-zine also has highly favorable comments. It comments that both wines are at the perfect moment for immediate consumption, offer a distinctive expression of their terroir of origin and are conveniently priced.
