Leslie Moring is a graduate of Christopher Newport University, earning her BS in Biology in 2004 and her MS in Environmental Science in 2006. Mrs. Moring left her career as a Bio-Organic Chemist in 2010 to pursue her dream of teaching. She joined Franklin City Public Schools in the fall of 2012, where she teaches Biology and Dual Enrollment Biology. Mrs. Moring has high expectations when it comes to her students. She makes sure that all students not only know that they can meet those expectations, but do meet those expectations. In 2013, Mrs. Moring and the science department implemented a biannual science fair which is completely funded through donorschoose.org. Her additional duties and responsibilities are Department Chair for the Science Department, Mentor to Second Year Teachers, Yearbook Sponsor, Scholastic Bowl Coach, and member of the Teacher Advisory Council. Mrs. Moring has been married for two years to her husband, Brandon, and they have a beautiful daughter, Lilly.

Catherine Brown is an outstanding student who always tries her hardest in everything she does. She has participated in multiple sports, including both volleyball and soccer. In addition to her talents both academically and athletically, Catherine is a good all-around citizen.
1st Semester Principal’s List & Honor Roll The students to the left earned Principal’s List status by passing their classes with all A’s. The students to the bottom left achieved Honor Roll status by earning all A’s and B’s. Both groups received a letter from Roslyn Tyler, Virginia Delegate, congratulating them on their academic achievement.

Student and Teacher of the Month for March
Media Specialist, Suzanne Blythe is a team player who collaborates with others to take photographs and write articles for the newspaper. She is always willing, and addresses any technology questions immediately and without avail. Mrs. Blythe is always smiling and positive.
Ms. Veronica Knight received an award for being the volunteer of the year at the Special Olympics for 2015. She was named the Volunteer of the Year by the Special Olympics committee for showing out-standing dedication and support to the students in Ms. Turner’s class. Ms. Knight is often seen walk-ing around with the students as they work on their recycling project.
The JROTC program at Franklin High School is partnering with the Franklin Lions Club to support an eyeglasses recycling initiative. The mission of Lions Club International is, “To empower volun-teers to serve their communities, meet humanitari-an needs, encourage peace and promote interna-tional understanding through the Lions Club.” The JROTC program firmly believes in this state-ment, and through the Eyeglasses Recycling pro-ject, they aim to help individuals in their commu-nity. JROTC will be collecting eyeglasses and is encouraging everyone to help in this effort.

FHS Supports Autism
On Saturday, March 7th, Kiana Reid, and sisters LeAnna and Andrianna Leonard visited News Channel 3. While visiting, they had the opportunity to tour the studios and participate in a business professionalism session to learn about entrepreneurship. The students also visited J&J Enterprises in Portsmouth, VA, which is owned and operated by FHS graduate Showanda Blue Mayer.

FHS Eggs & Issues
On Tuesday, March 31st, Franklin High School government students attended the Eggs & Issues breakfast at PDCCC Workforce Development Center. The event was held from 7:30-9:00 AM and allowed area high school students to communicate with state government representatives.

FHS Receives Exxon Check Many say that money solves all problems. We know that money does not solve all problems, but it is great when money is available. Money is needed for books, food, equipment and many other things that help schools function. FHS received a $500 check from Exxon and is grateful for the do-nation.

FHS DECA club has always been known for volunteering their time within the community. On March 28th, DECA members along with marketing teacher and DECA advisor, Hope Riddick volunteered at the Franklin Downtown Easter Egg Hunt. The students enjoyed dressing up, hiding eggs, and assisting the children as needed in finding eggs. After-wards, the students were treated to lunch at Pizza Hut for taking time out of their busy schedules on a Saturday to help oth-ers. Way to go Broncos!

FHS HOSA members along with teacher and HOSA Advisor, Ms. Robin Kreider attended the HOSA State Leadership Conference held in Williamsburg, Virginia on March 12th– 15th. FHS members competed against other HOSA chapter members from Virginia in interviewing and creative problem solving skills. Shontonia Owens, Angela Bird, & Lauren Causey were awarded 4th place in creative problem solving and Alexis Rogers was awarded 2nd place in interviewing skills. Congratulations!
