Our economic development team set new standards in 2018

A labama’s economy is breaking records that some

thought we’d never see. The state recently recorded

its lowest unemployment rate ever, and more Alabamians are

holding down jobs than at any point in our history. With all

kinds of industries growing, it’s clear that Alabama’s economy

is hitting on all cylinders.

The Alabama economic development team is making a major

contribution to this growth. Their efforts set new standards

in 2018, as outlined in the New & Expanding Industry Report,

issued today by the Alabama Department of Commerce.

Last year, companies from around the world announced

Alabama projects totaling $8.7 billion in new capital

investment, beating 2015’s record figure of $7.1 billion. Even

better, these economic development projects will bring more

than 17,000 new jobs to Alabama.

I once served as the assistant director of the Alabama

Development Office, so I know the impact of this work. That’s

why I have embraced economic development as a central

pillar of my administration. I believe the results contained in

this report show we are making progress in our mission to

provide every Alabamian with the opportunity to earn a living

and climb the ladder of success.

2018 projects set the stage for robust growth across Alabama

I believe we will look back at 2018 as a watershed moment

for Alabama and its evolving economy. For starters,

economic development projects announced last year will lay

a foundation for growth that will sustain job creation and

extend prosperity across the state. The results are captured

in the 2018 New and Expanding Industry Report, which

serves as a report card for Alabama’s economic development

team.

This comprehensive report shows that economic developers

across the state successfully worked on 357 projects

spanning a wide range of industries in 2018. The team’s

success is reflected in the more than 17,000 jobs that will

be created through these projects. Alabama’s economy will

benefit from new capital investment totaling $8.7 billion –

the highest annual total ever recorded for the state.

The year brought massive developments in the auto sector,

led by the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA plant in North

Alabama. This is the largest single project in terms of

investment ($1.6 billion) and job creation (4,000 jobs) for

Alabama in a decade. The project will not only bring a fifth

automaker, Mazda, to Alabama but also trigger an expansion

of the state’s auto supply chain, creating thousands of jobs.

In addition, Hyundai and Honda announced plans in 2018

to expand their Alabama operations, while Mercedes-Benz

broke ground on a battery pack assembly facility for its

upcoming line of Alabama-made electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, new aerospace investments will energize the

high-flying industry in the state. Most significantly, Airbus

will build a second assembly line at its Mobile manufacturing

facility, allowing it to produce the A220 passenger jet in

Alabama.

During 2018, technology companies Facebook and Amazon

discovered Alabama as a future home, adding a new

dimension to the state’s economy. Plus, Commerce and

its allies engaged in a team effort to persuade a major

homegrown tech-focused company, Shipt, to remain in

Birmingham and also add 200 jobs.

Alabama’s rural areas continue to benefit from rising

project activity. Last year, Rex Lumber, Westervelt Co. and

Great Southern Wood all announced plans for new lumber

production facilities in the state. It’s also becoming clear

that the Alabama Jobs Act is helping to boost rural counties.

In 2018, projects supported by the Jobs Act in rural, or

“targeted,” counties involved $1.1 billion in investment and

over 1,100 jobs.

These successes reinforce my confidence that Alabama is

building a more dynamic economy that spreads opportunity

far and wide across the state. We still have a lot of work

to do, but we have the tools needed for the job, including

world-class workforce development programs. Moreover, we

have the full support of Governor Kay Ivey, who is committed

to creating 21st Century jobs across Alabama.
