Made for This Place How nature heals our minds and bodies and how that points to a Creator.

John Burroughs said “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.” Many of us have experienced the restorative effect of nature, but what is the science behind it and what does it tell us about ourselves? It turns out that we are perfectly created to thrive in the environment the Creator designed for us.

From physical and mental health to child development, studies show that we as humans thrive when exposed to a natural environment.

Research has been in done in hospitals, offices, and schools showing that even the addition of a single plant has a significant impact on mental health. Patients whose beds faced courtyards recovered faster and with less pain. Schools who added plants and trees to concrete courtyards found that inactive and depressed children began smiling and playing. In fact, children who play regularly in natural environments show more advanced motor fitness, including coordination, balance and agility, and they are sick less often (Grahn, et al. 1997, Fjortoft & Sageie 2001). Additionally, “children with views of and contact with nature score higher on tests of concentration and self-discipline. The greener, the better the scores” (Wells 2000, Taylor et al. 2002). At the other end of the spectrum, those who are deprived of a natural environment seem to suffer as a consequence. City dwellers have a higher risk for depression

and anxiety, higher incidences of heart attacks, mental illness, and high blood pressure, as well as a higher amount of stress hormones in their system. No matter the age or situation, research across the board shows a marked positive impact on individuals when they are allowed to interact with nature.

But what is the science behind this phenomena? Are we simply happier due to a change in scenery rather than the scenery itself or is there something actually happening in our minds? A study conducted by Gregory Bratman, a graduate student at Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources at Stanford University, tracked brain activity in individuals before and after they interacted with nature. Those who had taken their walk through nature showed lower stress levels and more blood flow and activity in the anterior cingulate and the insula—areas associated with empathy and altruism. Conversely, those who walked in the city showed decreased activity in the subgenual prefrontal cortex—a part of the brain tied to depressive rumination. Individual’s brains were actually changing in response to their time with nature. This is a particular interesting find as it shows that it is the exposure to nature, rather than simply the endorphin effect of physical activity, that has that strongest and most positive impact on physical and mental health.

While science offers studies and proof that our bodies and minds benefit from exposure to a natural environment, it offers few answers as to why. Technically, mere movement should be enough to get our blood flowing and keep us happy and healthy. But that is simply not the case. Instead we see cities building gardens, hospitals planning buildings around courtyards, and schools integrating nature into their

play areas. The more we learn about the impact of nature on the mind and disposition, the more we learn that humans thrive best in the environment they were created for. Study after study confirms that nature has a significant positive influence on humans, yet no one has figured out the reason behind the phenomena. Perhaps the reason is that this world was perfectly designed for us by our Creator. Psalm 19:1 tells us that “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” When we step outside, not only are we stepping into an environment that was perfectly designed for us (rather than one we built for ourselves), but we are seeing the glory of God through the work of His hands! removing ourselves from the environment for which we were created, we have made ourselves sad, unfocussed, and sick. So as the weather warms up, take the time to step out into the world for which you were created.

**********************************************************************NEW Programming This Summer!A lot of hard work has gone into creating a new space for our exhibits over the past year, but what you may not have heard is that our programming has also been undergoing significant changes. This summer we are introducing a brand new programming model! We are transitioning our traditional tour to be more conducive to self-guided tours by filling our space with new, interactive options to help enhance guests’ learning while also making the information accessible and fun for all ages. Beyond our tour, we will be offering rotating exhibits, activity stations, live animal encounters, themed breakout sessions, guest speakers, and more!

One of the elements of the new model we are so excited about sharing with you is the addition of breakout sessions. Each month, a new topic will be added to the tour and extra, hands-on learning options will be available throughout the day to add to your learning and discovery! We want you to learn and experience something new with each visit and these sessions allow us to provide an exciting variety of topics. Now that summer hours are finally about to begin, we can’t wait to share these exciting new changes with you!

Founders Fodder

As we head into the summer months, I always get excited about hearing and seeing the sights and sounds of kids running and playing in the park. The squeals, the screams, and the red sweaty faces are always uplifting for me. I had always envisioned the park as a great place to have family fun.

Nick, Todd, Christian, Gary, and Greg have done an amazing job of transforming the exhibit hall. We are so close to having it ready for the summer months. If anyone might have a 55 inch flat screen they could

donate or help purchase, we would be deeply grateful. We need it for our 7 days of creation video as we have replaced our posters. Please consider our plea.

Our science fair was once again a great day at the museum. I only wish we would have had more entries and attendance! I so enjoy our science fair; I learn something from every presentation. It always amazes me when I learn so very much, even from youngsters in Elementary school. If you have never entered or attended, plan on joining us when we roll it out again next May. I promise you will be amazed at what you will learn.

Jodie tells me we are locked and loaded for our summer camps program. Take time to visit the website and see what might work for you and yours. She is doing an amazing job transforming our model to a program based approach.

Alysha and Alexandria have been preparing our first ever summer carnival, with a Narnia theme. This is designed as a family fun day through which we hope to promote the museum and raise some funds right at the beginning of the summer. Check out the website for all of the details (akronfossils.com/fundraisers).

Alysha is also heading up our booth at the Spirit Song Music Festival at King's Island. This is also our first try in this venue. Please pray for both of these events along with success and clarity for our leadership team.

As I stand back and watch, I can truly see the hand of God at work in all of the efforts. The groups are increasing, the program participation is certainly on the rise, and spirits are high. Keep praying, keep spreading the word, and consider volunteering; we always need things to be done. Lastly, consider supporting us financially, every little bit helps.

How Can YOU Help?

TV Donor Request

Each week we are seeing more exciting progress take place in our new Exhibit Hall thanks to the hard work and generosity of a few volunteers and donors. However, several items are still needed to complete this project to the level of professionalism we are striving to achieve. One such item is a new television on which to display our beautiful and newly produced video on the 7 days of creation described in Genesis. This video is the cornerstone of our new Intelligent Design exhibit and will provide guests with a vital bridge between the science of the exhibits they have just explored and the Biblical history exhibits which will follow.

We are searching for a Samsung UN55J6200 55-Inch 1080p Smart LED TV (2015 Model), or a similarly made television. If you or someone you know is getting rid of a model like this, please consider donating it to Akron Fossils & Science Center and helping us in our mission to connect people to the Truth of God’s creation. If you would simply like to donate some or all of the funds needed to purchase this item, we estimate the cost at approximately $600.

We hope that you will consider helping us reach our goal of providing the most professional, fun, and unique visitor experience possible as we strive to connect people to the truth! All donations are tax deductible.

If you are interested in donating, please contact Alexandria Schall by emailing [email protected] or calling 330-665-3466

Exhibit Sponsorships

There is now a fun, new way your family, church, business, or organization can support Akron Fossils & Science Center: Exhibit Sponsorships! Exhibit sponsorships offer the opportunity to become directly involved with the work we are doing here throughout the year. For just $250, your sponsorship of an exhibit will provide the vital resources needed to maintain exciting and professional exhibits that make up the foundation of what Akron Fossils & Science Center is all about.

With each passing year, we continue to grow and improve our programming, but the exhibits remain at the heart of what we do. It is at these exhibits where children are first able to touch a fossil, see the inside of a cell, and watch how sedimentary layers form for the first time. It is here that a visitor is first able to explore a wealth of information she may have never learned before and learn that she is more than the result of random processes. Your generous sponsorship of an Akron Fossils & Science Center exhibit will make it possible for us to continue creating these experiences that can’t be found anywhere else.

Along with a sponsor name plaque featured above the sponsored exhibit, each exhibit sponsor will receive an Annual Membership to Akron Fossils & Science Center so that you can come back and see how your exhibit is impacting the lives of visitors throughout the year. We hope that you will consider joining us in our effort to create a unique and quality educational experience that will bridge the gap left by traditional science education. Together, we can

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Donations aren’t always in the form of money! Donating your time is a great way to be involved at AFSC. Our science center relies on you to help bring our vision and our mission to others. This summer, we are in need of regularly scheduled volunteers to help supervise our park, run zip-line, and give tours. These volunteers would need to be available at least one day every week for the duration of our summer season. Volunteering is not only a great way to help out, but is an opportunity for those interested in what goes on behind the scenes here to get a sneak peek at what goes into making a science center work. Check out the volunteer page on our website to see how YOU can get involved! Or contact Alysha Schall at [email protected]
