OVERHEAD HEIGHTHEADROOM HEIGHTVertical slide-up car gates allow fullaccess to the car opening width andheight. Five types are shown below. The appropriate type depends on theoverhead height/headroom height ofthe shaft. Vertical slide-up gates can bedesigned for use with most shafts, including those with limited over-head height.

Single-Section Car Gates/Car DoorsThese are used when there is ampleoverhead height in the shaft. Requiredoverhead height for 6 ft. (1800mm)high car gate, to clear the open gate,is landing door opening height, plus 6ft. 1 in. (1900mm) to the nearest over-head obstruction in the shaft, mea-sured from the top landing door sill.If landing doors have different open-ing heights, use largest openingheight. When the car gate or cardoor panel height is more than 6 ft.(1800mm), overhead height must beincreased accordingly, or use anothertype of car gate.

Two-Section Car Gates/Car DoorsThese are used when there is limitedoverhead height. Required overheadheight for 6 ft. (1800mm) high two-section gate, to clear the open gate, is1.5 times landing door opening height, plus 6 in. (150mm) to the nearest over-head obstruction in the shaft, mea-sured from the top landing door sill. Iflanding doors have different openingheights, use largest opening height. Each of the two panel sections is a different height.

Single-Section CarGates/Car Doors, Solid-Panel, Full-Car-Height Required overhead height, to clear theopen gate, is 2 times landing door open-ing height, plus 2 in. (50mm) to thenearest overhead obstruction in theshaft, measured from the top landingdoor sill. If landing doors have differ-ent opening heights, use largest opening height.

Two-Section CarGates/Car Doors, Solid-Panel, Full-Car-Height Required overhead height, to clear theopen gate, is 1.5 times landing dooropening height, plus 26 in. (650mm) tothe nearest overhead obstruction in theshaft, measured from the top landingdoor sill. If landing doors have differ-ent opening heights, use largest open-ing height.

Three-Section CarGates/Car Doors, Solid-Panel, Full-Car-Height Required overhead height, to clear theopen gate, is 1.33 times landing dooropening height, plus 13 in. (406mm) tothe nearest overhead obstruction inthe shaft, measured from the top land-ing door sill. If landing doors havedifferent opening heights, use largestopening height.

PANEL CONSTRUCTION

CLASS OF LOAD For Biparting and Slide-down doors, door trucking sills are designed tomatch the load capacity and loadclassification of the elevator/lift.Following is a condensed explanationof these classifications:

Class A: General Freight Loading.Material is moved on and off the eleva-tor/lift manually or by means of handtrucks only. No concentrated loading ispermitted. Minimum capacity is basedon 49 pounds per square foot (240 kgper square metre) of inside net platformarea. Single piece loads are restricted to25%of the rated capacity.

Class B:Motor Vehicle Loading.Solely for carrying automobile trucks orpassenger automobiles. Minimumcapacity is based on 30 pounds persquare foot (145 kg per square metre) ofthe inside net platform area.

Class C1: Industrial Truck Loading. The elevator is permitted to carry aforklift along with the load. However, the total of the load and the forkliftmay not exceed the rated capacity ofthe elevator/lift.

Class C2: Industrial Truck Loading. For this classification, a forklift is normally not carried by the elevatorbut may be used for loading and unload-ing. While this classification does notaffect the rated capacity, the fact thatthe elevator does not carry the forkliftdoes permit exceeding the rated capacity during the loading andunloading. During elevator movement, the rated capacity may not be exceeded.

Class C3: Other Loading With HeavyConcentrations. (not shown)Where forklift is not normally used.Loading is determined on the basis ofactual loading conditions, but not lessthan that required for Class A loading.

SELECTION FACTORSPeelle offers freight elevator doorsand gates for practically any applica-tion. The size of the opening and themethod of operation for the doorsand gate should be determined bythe size and weight of materials to becarried by the elevator/lift, as well asthe method of loading and whetherfreight handlers or other passengerswill ride on the elevator. Door SizePeelle landing doors are designed toallow full access to the car openingwidth and height. Peelle recommendsdoor size 8 ft. wide by 8 ft. high(2500mm by 2500mm) or larger.Power OperationPower door operation is desirable fordoors 8 ft. wide by 8 ft. high(2500mm by 2500mm) and larger.Power door operation is also desirablefor doors in heavy traffic applications.Where door size is small and usage isinfrequent, manual operation is sat-isfactory. Peelle manual doors arearranged for future power operation.

Materials and Finishes For corrosion or wet environments, stainless steel doors are available.Roomside stainless fascias are avail-able for aesthetics. Peelle can supplystock door hardware and controlroom equipment suitable for mostenvironments, such as NEMA 1 orNEMA 4.Door TypeEach door type has specific featuresto accommodate specific verticalmeasurements in the hoistway shaft.See chart on page 10.

Biparting TypeBiparting doors are selected wherethe efficient use of hoistway space isimportant. The panels move in opposite directions and counterbal-ance each other, with the upper panelmoving down and the lower panelmoving up during close operation.Biparting doors do not require a sillprojection.

Hoistway Vertical SpaceThe type of biparting doors useddepends upon the space available in the hoistway shaft. Bipartingdoors can be furnished for short floor heights, shallow pits or lowoverheads and still allow full accessto the clear opening width and heightof the door and car.

Regular Biparting DoorsA Regular Door consists of a upperand a lower panel of equal height. Aregular door is used when the floor-to-floor dimension equals or exceeds1.5 times the opening height, plus 6in. (150mm). The overhead height forthe top landing door must equal orexceed 1.5 times the landing doorheight plus 4 in. (100mm), measuredfrom the top landing door sill. Thepit depth for the lowest landing doormust equal or exceed 0.5 times thelanding door height plus 6 in.(150mm), measured from the lowestlanding door sill. These height anddepth clearances are to be effectivefor the width of the opening plus therequired return space on each side ofthe opening.

Pass-Type Biparting DoorsPass-Type Doors are used when thefloor-to-floor dimension is less thanthe 1.5 times the opening height plus6 in. (150mm) required for regulardoors. The upper panel at the shortheight landing is offset so that whenopening it slides behind the lowerpanel of the door at the floor above.Due to this offset, the lower paneltrucking sill is wider than for a regulardoor. The minimum floor-to-floor heightfor pass door is equal to door open-ing height plus 24 in. (610mm).The pit depth and overhead heightfor pass doors is the same as a regular door.

Extended Sill BipartingDoorsExtended Sill Doors are used withPass Doors for the other floors thatdo not have short heights. Extendedsill door has a regular door upperpanel and a pass-type door lower panel.

Telco Upper HalfBiparting Doors Telco upper half door consists of anupper panel made from two separatepanels which telescope upward. It isused when the overhead is less thanthat required for regular or pass typedoors. The minimum overhead is equalto 1.25 times landing door openingheight plus 8 in. (200mm). Compound 2:1 Regularand Pass Biparting DoorsCompound 2:1 door consists of alower panel that is 1/2 the height ofthe upper panel. It is used when thepit is less than required for regulartype door. The minimum pit depth isequal to 1/3 times bottom landingdoor opening height plus 4 in.(100mm). Compound doors are avail-able in both a regular type and passtype. The pass type requires the sameminimum floor-to-floor height as thestandard pass type biparting door.

Slide-up/Slide-down TypePanels on Slide-up doors move in thesame direction and require a counter-weight. Slide-up doors are selectedwhen it is desirable to have all panelsmoving in a same direction during closing.

Two-Section/Three-SectionSlide-up Doors (Telco®)Two-Section and Three-Section slide-up doors offer easier handing andinstallation than single section doorsplus they require less overhead andfloor-to-floor space.

Single-Section Slide-upDoorsUsed if there is enough clear verticaldistance to accommodate the doorbetween the projecting building silland the underside of the projectinglanding sill on the floor above.

Single-Section Slide-downType DoorsSlide-down doors are used at the toplanding when there is extremely lowoverhead space.
