2011: New directions Celebrates its 75th Anniversary

Dear Readers,

James Laughlin oversaw every editorial decision from 1936 until he died in 1997, and that legacy has since been carried on by Griselda Ohannessian and then by Peggy Fox, our most recent President, who retired earlier this year. We salute Peggy for her incredible leadership and her thirty-five years of dedication to New Directions and its authors.

Looking beyond the Fall and Winter books presented here, we happily anticipate new work by Javier Marías, Roberto Bolaño, Anne Carson, László Krasznahorkai, César Aira, Bernadette Mayer, Clarice Lispector, Octavio Paz, and Leonid Tsypkin, as well as a new series of poetry pamphlets and landmark Collected Poems for both Denise Levertov and James Laughlin. We are also redesigning our website and planning readings and celebrations, news of which can be found by signing up for our monthly newslet-ter at www.ndpublishing.com. Evelio Rosero

EVEliO ROSERO, was born in Bo-gotá, Colombia, in 1958. The author of fiction, plays, and poetry, he was awarded Colombia’s National litera-ture Prize for his body of work, and The Armies won the prestigious Tus-quets int’l Prize and the independent Foreign Fiction Prize.

Tancredo, a young hunchback, observes and participates in the rites at the Catholic church where he lives under the care of Father Almida. Also in resi-dence are the sexton Celeste Machado, his goddaughter Sabina Cruz, and three widows known collectively as the Lilias, who do the cooking and cleaning and provide charity meals for the local poor and needy. One Thursday, Father Almida and the sexton must rush off to meet the parish’s principal benefactor, Don Justiniano. It will be the first time in forty years Father Almida has not said mass. William Carlos Williams (1883–1963) produced a startling number of transla-tions of both Spanish and Latin American poetry starting during WWI and con-tinuing through the late fifties.
