GOLD Coast Airport chiefoperating officer Paul Donovanis a very persistent fellow, according to Qantas domesticceo Lyell Strambi. At yesterday’s announcementof QF’s new OOL flights (see p1),Strambi paid tribute to Donovanwho has strenuously lobbied forthe full service carrier’s return. “In fact if arm wrestling or armtwisting was an Olympic sportwe’d definitely have anothergold,” he said. The background music for thewelcome function was the1970’s hit ‘Baby Come Back’ - acopy of which was apparentlysent to senior Qantas executivesas part of the lobbying push.

A US man has been arrested atNew York JFK, after he managedto accidentally penetrate theairport’s state-of-the-artUS$100m security system. 31-year-old Daniel Casillo wasjet skiing in the nearby JamaicaBay when his craft stalled andhe swam to the only thing hecould see - the JFK runway lights. Once he made it to the shorehe climbed a barbed wireperimeter fence and then strolledundetected across two runways, through a Perimeter IntrusionDetection System and intoDelta’s Terminal 3 where he wasfinally spotted by a Deltaemployee, dripping wet andwearing a bright yellow life jacket. Security was alerted andpolice eventually charged himwith criminal trespassing, whilethe airport has implementedround-the-clock perimeter patrols.

TA flattered by CTC TOURISM Australia says that itsglobal marketing campaigns anddigital, social media and advocacyinitiatives are clearly making animpact, after a strong reactionfrom the Canadian TourismCommission about aggressivemarketing by its internationalcompetitors including Australia(TD yesterday). TA md Andrew McEvoy told TD“It’s great that our campaign andsocial media activities are gettingnoticed and grabbing theattention of our key competitors -which suggests to me that we’rehaving an impact in NorthAmerica which remains a keymarket for us”. McEvoy said it was vital thatTourism Australia continues todifferentiate itself against the“growing number of highly activenational tourism organisationsworldwide, such as the CanadianTourism Commission. “I know the work of the CTCwell and they are very good intheir own right. So in a way, this ishigh praise indeed,” he said.

Industry slams Business Tax Paper A PROPOSAL to remove setrates of depreciation on aircraftand hotels has been slammed byAustralian tourism bodies whosay the plan would reduce thenation’s competitiveness. The Federal Govt’s Business TaxWorking Group discussion paper, released yesterday, proposed tocut capped effective working liferestrictions for aircraft and hotelassets, significantly affecting thetax treatment of the capital-

intensive tourism operations. TTF Australia chief John Lee saidthe proposals flew in the face ofinitiatives such as the govt’srecently launched AustralianTourism Investment Guide. “The proposal to include hotelsand tourist accommodation in thesame depreciation regime ascommercial buildings wouldfurther deter investment in newdevelopments & refurbishment”. Australian Tourism ExportCouncil md Felicia Mariani echoedthe sentiments, describing theproposals as of serious concern toAustralia’s tourism industry. “Australia’s depreciationschedule already puts ouraviation industry well behindsome of our major competitors. “On top of this our domesticcarriers are already bearing anunfair burden in the form of theCarbon Tax, which doesn’t applyto international carriers,” she said. Mariani said the proposalswould see the tax man “give withone hand and take with the other”.

AFTA UPDATEThe latest insights from AFTA’s

Chief Executive, Jayson Westbury

WELL that’s it; London 2012 is finished and by all accounts has beenheralded as a big success. Many from the Australian travel industry haveboth enjoyed and benefited from the London games as Aussies weredefinitely attracted to attend. As a nation, Australia performed well coming in 10th on the medal tallywith 7 Gold, 16 Silver and 12 Bronze. Not our best effort ever, but still anextremely good effort by the team. London has definitely shown theworld that it can be a vibrant and exciting city and no doubt they will doa fantastic job of ensuring the benefits flow for years to come. For theAustralian travel industry, this will be important as outbound travel fromAustralia continues to surge. London and indeed the UK will be onpeople’s minds as many of the venues and scenes that we have allenjoyed over the past two weeks were beautiful and showcased thecountry so well. Let’s hope that their ability to grow and prosper postOlympics is better than some cities closer to home that did not do sucha good job post Olympics. Now all our attention turns to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Already afascinating destination full of allure and excitement, and now the hostcity of the 2016 Olympics. Again, Australians have a fascination with Rioand hopefully this will convert into bookings and interest as theexcitement builds and Rio becomes the Olympic centrepiece over thenext four years leading up to the Olympic Games in 2016. Australians love their sport and the travel industry is a keybeneficiary when these global international events are held inlocations which Aussies have on their “must see” or “bucketlist”. I think Rio fits that bill perfectly. Once again, a very big congratulations to London andthe team from VisitBritain.
