OFFICIAL COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course explores guidance and play with young children. Emphasis on using relationship-based
guidance approaches to support the development of self-regulation and positive self-concept. Methods for
designing a learning environment and using play to optimize children’s learning will be taught. Guidance
strategies and group management approaches are addressed.

This course addresses a critical area of knowledge and skill for early childhood teacher candidates—guidance of
young children and supporting their social and emotional development. The course will be required for Early
Childhood Education majors. This course covers similar content as EECE 234 Play and Development and ED
443E—which are required in our current program—but no longer will be when our new program takes effect.

PRESENT: Ok-Hee Lee and Erin Gillett, co-chairs; Mary Dosch, Teresa Shume, Dave Tack, John Benson, Erin Mowers, Keri DeSutter, Coleen Roller, Steve Grineski, Marilyn Labrensz, Ann Goldade, Camille Brandt, Barb Worman, Peggy Rittenhouse, Lynn Mahlum, Boyd Bradbury, Becky Theisen, Lisa Staiger John Benson moved to approve the minutes of Feb. 15, 2012. Seconded. Motion passed. The Early Childhood curriculum has been undergoing some changes. Handout attached at end or minutes. Three new courses were introduced; a 200 level course, Creative Expression in Early Childhood, EECE 438 Guidance and Play, and EECE 437 Leadership and Administration in Early Childhood, writing intensive. It was suggested to dual list the 400 level courses with a 500 level. This will enable master’s students to earn required credits in the field. This could also be worked into an emphasis in the C and I program. Barb Worman moved to accept EECE 2xx: Creative Expression in Early Childhood (working title) as a new course in the Early Childhood curriculum. Seconded. Motion passed.

Barb Worman moved to accept EECE 437 Leadership and Administration in Early Childhood Education as a new course in the Early Childhood curriculum. Seconded. Motion passed. Becky Theisen moved to approve EECE 438: Guidance and Play as a new course in the Early Childhood curriculum. Seconded. Discussion: These new course proposals have enabled EC to better distribute standards across the courses. Motion passed. The enrollment numbers for entry level courses have been lowered. Ed 205, Ed 294, SpEd 225, and STL 291 are classes that fill up quickly. On Dragon Days and Transfer Days, students don’t have choices for entry level courses and end up staying an extra semester. These courses have been capped and will have seats opened up during Dragon days and Transfer days as the need arises. Please let the chairs know if you have students requesting overrides for these courses. Update on searches. The vacancy notices for SpEd went out last Wednesday. The Foundations draft vacancy notices will be out this afternoon or tomorrow. Please look at the vacancies and send suggestions for changes to the chair of the committee. Noon Friday is the deadline for changes. Ed Leadership vacancy has been sent to the retrenchment list. The advertisement will go public on March 7 and screening will begin March 26. section of EECE 438 will be offered fall and spring semester as part of the senior block of courses with
an embedded field experience.
