 NEW COURSE for FALL 2012 EPS 199: China’s Education Systems Pre-K-16: Teacher Preparation and Experiences in Rural and Urban Classrooms  Meets during the 2 nd half of the fall semester; Tuesdays, 5-6PM in the College of Education  Includes a 17-day study tour in China between December 26, 2012—January 11, 2013  Earn approximately 25 hours of teaching practice  For more information or to enroll in the course, contact Lucinda Morgan at [email protected]   The purpose of this 3-credit hour course is to learn about the various education systems in China, including both urban and rural schooling situations. The course consists of both on-campus classes and also a study tour trip to China. The study tour will provide the opportunity for Illinois students to observe the differences in public and  private schooling options in China, as well as teacher preparation programs at universities. A range of educational levels will be showcased in the study tour in order to better understand the transitions between different levels of education in China, so students will visit a pre-school, kindergarten, and various primary and secondary schools. Course Goals:  Gain a better understanding of your own background in education as you compare your experiences to the educational systems in China  Better understand the challenges and struggles in education in rural and urban environments  Enhance leadership and organizational skills by creating lesson plans and teaching with partner Education university students in China Pre-Departure Class Sessions The pre-departure class sessions will provide an overview of China’s ed ucational systems, emphasize the importance of intercultural competence, safety issues for international travel, and will introduce basic Chinese Mandarin. Study Tour in China Students will observe classrooms at a variety of schools, ranging from pre-school through university level, and have discussions with Chinese Education professors about various topics, including the history of education in China and recent education reforms. While in Shanghai, s tudents will be partnered with high school students from a private high school that uses an all-English, Western-style curriculum in order to tutor them and assist with homework assignments. In Nanjing, students will be partnered with a local Education univers ity student, who will assist with translating, and together with their Chinese partner they will plan and teach English (ESL) lessons at a primary school specifically for the children of migrant wor kers. approximately twenty-five hours of hands-on teaching experience, in addition to the time spent observingclassrooms and touring schools.

Instructor Information

The course is taught by EPOL PhD student Lucinda Morgan, who works in the College of Education’s Office ofInternational Programs (OIP), and supervised by Professor Ronald L. Jacobs, who is a Professor of HumanResource Development (EPOL) and the Director of the OIP. Lucinda holds a Masters of Education fromIllinois in Global Studies in Education (EPOL) and is completing a Masters in East Asian Languages and

Cultures at Illinois. Her undergraduate major was East Asian Studies and she worked in the education field inChina for seven years, in both the public and private sector. The Study Tour is tentatively planned to be co-led by Lucinda and Kathy Ryan, who is the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Education.

Study Tour Financial Information 

The tentative total cost per student is $2,118 USD. This is based on a group size of twelve students, the studytour fee includes hotel accommodation in a double room with two twin beds; three meals a day while in China;domestic transportation within China by bus, train, bus, and taxi; ticket and entrance fees for museums andhistorical sites; and honorariums given to guest speakers and interpreters.

Students are financially responsible for their round-trip international airfare from Chicago O’Hare Airport toShanghai Pudong International Airport (estimated $1,200); for their own passport and obtaining a China visa(guidance for the visa will be provided by the College of Education’s Office of International Programs); for  purchasing international travel insurance through the Illinois Study Abroad Office; and for any personal purchases during the study tour.

Opportunities for Financial Assistance

The study tour is a large financial commitment. The Office of International Programs is applying for theFreeman Undergraduate Initiative through the Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies in order to lessen thefinancial burden. The Freeman Undergraduate Initiative in the amount of $20,000. If received, this funding will be divided equally among all students participating in the study tour to China. For example, if twelve students participate in the study tour, then each of the twelve students would receive approximately $1,666 toward their  program fee. Notification about the approval for this funding will be available in fall 2012.

In addition to the potential funding from the Freeman Undergraduate Initiative, the College of Education’sOffice of International Programs awards scholarships to Education students each year for study abroad programs. Awards in the past have ranged from $500 to $1,000 per student; and ten to twenty scholarships areannually awarded (http://education.illinois.edu/international/coe-study-abroad-scholarship.html). Combinedwith the potential funding from the Freeman Undergraduate Initiative, the scholarship from the Office of International Programs would then be able to help finance the expense of the international airfare. Students participating in the study tour would also be highly encouraged to apply for scholarships offered toundergraduates offered through the Illinois’ Study Abroad Office(http://studyabroad.illinois.edu/cost/scholarships.aspx).
