You’ve all heard that saying, right? After the month of May I’m not so sure I agree. Let me explain. Quite some time ago the company that wrote the software program for our computer system at Danchuk decided that they were no longer going to support our version. Well that, as you can imagine, creates quite the problem. If our system were to corrupt, and they always do eventually, we would have no support and therefore be dead in the water, so to speak. So for six months Tricia Sousa and I, mostly Tricia, researched dozens of software programs in hopes of finding one that will replace and more importantly improve our system and the company’s efficiency. We found one that we were sure would do the job and went with it. It took about three months of behind the scenes in-house training and preparation and on May 1 st , 2002 we went “live”. I don’t know if live is quite the word I would use today to describe what we went but that was the term the new software people used. While I have no children of my own, I feel as if I have gone through the pains of pregnancy and labor and am the proud father of a huge, expensive, energy- zapping computer system that is as fast and up to date with today’s technology as you can get. Has it paid off? You bet it has. I am thrilled to say that after a very rough first month we are sailing along better than ever. The more familiar we get with this system the more we are learning all the great things it can do to better our lives and the level of service we give to our customers. This leads me to my next topic. While we trudged through the horrible month of May our shipping schedule and order fill rate (backorders) suffered a bit. We never really got worse than 72 hours out on shipping but when you are used to 24 hours or less that stings a bit. Also, purchasing suffered for a couple of weeks and that had an effect on some of our fast movers. I truly and deeply apologize for these set-backs but am very proud and excited to say that we are 100% back on track and foresee no further problems. I would like to thank Tricia Sousa for being the brains and backbone of the entire project. Without her dedication and hard work we wouldn’t have had a snowball’s chance in Hawaii of pulling it off. I would also like to thank all the employees at Danchuk that stuck it out without a complaint. As for the employees with complaints, we’ll talk later. On a more positive note, we are featuring some exciting new parts in this issue and also running specials on some long time great parts like stereos and brake and suspension components. Change is good. You’ve all heard that saying, right?

After the month of May I’m not so sure I agree. Let me explain. Quite some time ago the company that wrote the software program for our computer

system at Danchuk decided that they were no longer going to support our version. It took about three months of behind the scenes in-house training and preparation and on May 1st, 2002 we went “live”. I don’t know if live is quite the word I would use today to describe what we went but that was the term the new software people used. While I have no children of my own, I feel as if I have gone through the pains of pregnancy and labor and am the proud father of a huge, expensive, energy-zapping computer system that is as fast

This leads me to my next topic. While we trudged through the horrible month of May our shipping schedule and order fill rate (backorders) suffered a bit. On a more positive note, we are featuring some exciting new parts in this issue and also running specials on some long time great parts like stereos and brake and suspension components. Transmission crossmembers (Continued from front page)

COol Customer cars

Commuting to Coal Mine No Problem for this ClassicThis issue’s feature car is a ‘57 Belair 4-door hardtop owned by Vern Chavez of Raton, New Mexico. Originally purchased in 1973, this oldie but goodie was used to carpool Mr. Chavez and friends to and from work at the local coal mine, just 38 short miles of dirt road daily! Vern paid $200 and used it to carpool for 2 years before starting his restoration. “Green Onions”, which his family has lovingly named the ‘57, is an ongoing project. The Jade Green Firemist ‘57 is on it’s second paint job, but still has the original interior, except for the carpet. The original 283 was rebuilt and dressed up a few years

ago and the carb was replaced with a 650 Holley. The car has a completely new front end and original power brakes and power steering, refurbished with parts bought from Danchuk. Vern had the transmission rebuilt as well as installing new window trim, kick panels and various other items. As we said earlier, Vern has owned this car since 1973 and has been working on this car since 1975. He is still working on it and remarked to us “Does it ever end?” when we asked how long his proj-ect would take. So far, “Green Onions” has been treated to loads of TLC and tons of wax and has won it’s share of trophies at the local car shows. Vern hopes to retire soon, finish up a few loose ends on the car (upholstery and new bumpers) and “Crooze” northeast New Mexico!! We’d love to come with you Vern, thanks for sharing your beautiful ‘57 4-door hardtop

with us. We think that a cruise with all 4 windows down is the perfect way to spend a summer’s evening.

For proper positioning, your transmission needs to be mounted to the motor, so if it is not you definitely need to start by doing that. 1.) Install the rubber transmission mount (#977 or #977A depending upon your type of transmission) to the tail shaft of the transmission. 2.) Now bolt the crossmember to the rubber

mount using the 7/16” hardware provided. Be sure that the mounting holes are facing towards the front of the car. Leave the bolts loose for

crossmember alignment. Once you have done this the crossmember will just be hanging, suspended by the transmission. 3.) Install the side brackets underneath the crossmember so that it will be sitting on top of them using the 3/8” hardware provided. A sketch of this is provided with the crossmember to show how they are

positioned if this is unclear. Once again, leave the bolts fairly loose. 4.) If you are using a TH350 transmission you may need to grind the front edge of the brackets so that they will sit flush up against the frame. The TH400, 700R, 4, 5 & 6 speed transmissions have a longer tail shaft so this won’t be necessary. 5.) Once everything is aligned the way you want it and the brackets fit flush to the frame, tighten up the center mount bolts and side brackets to the crossmember. 6.) Insure that all areas on the frame where welding is done are free of paint and grease. TIG or MIG welding processes are recommended. 7.) To get the correct angle for the transmission, measure 1” down from the top of the frame. Do this for both sides and mark the location with your felt tip pen. 8.) Now tack weld

the brackets into place on the four corners of the brackets. 9.) Recheck your measurements and adjust if needed. 10.) When you are sure that your measurements are correct and everything is aligned properly you are ready to weld the brackets to the frame completely.

You should weld them all the way around the bracket for maximum strength.Williams Classic Chassis Works

did this installation for us on a body off frame to make photographing easier. The installation can be done to cars with the body still on the frame with just a little more laying on your back required.

Before purchasing your shock support you should decide which style of shock you would like to use. There are two styles of shock supports we are carrying from William’s Classic Chassis. Part #12188 is designed for the stock style shocks with an eyelet on one end that mounts to the leaf spring plate and a stud on the upper end which originally mounted through the trunk but will now stop at the new support. Part #12187 is designed for shocks with eyelets at both ends which a lot of people feel is a more rigid mounting style because you don’t have the slop of the stud/bushing style. Also, part #12187 is the only style that will work with the Wagon’s and Nomad’s due to clearance issues, but will also fit all other styles as long as you purchase new shocks (Part #12200 on page 7) with dual eyelets.

If you are doing a frame-off restoration on your classic and you are installing this shock support with the body off the frame then it is recommended that you tack weld a couple of pieces of 2”x 2” angle iron on the frame to keep it from flexing or moving during welding. All you basically need to do is cut a couple of pieces so that they will lay across the

top of the frame and tack weld them in front of the shock support location, as shown here in the photo. If the body is on the frame it is not

necessary to weld these pieces on since the frame is bolted to the body. The body will provide enough support to keep the frame rails from twisting and bending when welding the shock support in.

Installation

1.) Start by measuring from the rear frame crossmember, as shown, to the arch over the rear end on the inside of the frame, pictured to the right. This measurement needs to be 47-1/2”. Mark this with your pen. 2.) At that mark measure from the top of the frame rail down 1-1/8” and mark this location. This will give you your point to center punch and drill your hole. 3.) Center punch the mark for drilling. 4.) Drill a 1/8” pilot hole where you center punched. 5.) Using the 1 3/4” hole saw, drill out the holes on the inside of the frame rails. Do not drill through both sides of the frame, only the inside. 6.) Insert the shock support with the mounting holes facing toward the rear of the car as shown in the photo to the right. You may have to trim equal amounts from each end until you have a good fit. Frame widths tend to vary as much as an inch from car to car so the crossmember is left long enough to work for everyone. Do not cut any more than you need. The more sticking inside the frame the better.

Installation Article 2:Rear weld-in shock support

7.) Now that you have the support in the frame, be sure that it is centered between the frame rails. 8.) Once you have it centered, use the hand level and make the shock mounts on the support the same angle or level as the top flat on the frame rail. Be sure to check the level on the flat of the frame rail first though. If your frame is not sitting level and you perfectly level the shock support then it will be wrong, you want them the same. 9.) Tack weld the support to the frame in a couple of spots. 10.) Recheck that the shock support is centered and level to the frame. If not, this is your last chance to break the tack welds free and readjust. 11.) If you are sure everything is as it should be then weld a nice bead all the

way around the support.

I hope you find these articles helpful. We do strongly

recommend that if you are not already good at welding, you do seek a professional to handle the job. Welding is a skillful and dangerous procedure that should be taken seriously and requires experience and training. Also some of these parts are available through us in bolt-in style, so if you want to do the work yourself but don’t know how to weld this may be your best bet. Please be sure to check out the other weld-in products on page 5. Thanks and good luck!

Shock SupportThis is the part that some say Chevy forgot. Why did they mount the upper end of the shock absorber to the underside of the sheet metal trunk floor? A little rust can jeopardize the support of the entire rear end! This shock support is a sturdy and easily installed fix for this very vulnerable area. Weld this support into place and stop worrying about that rust-prone trunk floor! Available for all frames except Nomad and Wagons. Please see the sheet metal section for standard trunk floor repair sections.

Stock Rear End Disc Brake Complete KitWorks with stock rear-end. Easy bolt-on installation. Kit includes rotors, calipers with built-in E-brake, rubber hose kit and all mount-ing hardware.1955-64 ........ #2701A
