The vision and strategy presented here is not to take away or add anything new, but to share the obvious - with a fresh perspective...
We are known primarily as the ‘place of firsts’
Mainly because of both Maori and European... having their respective arrivals here...
But long before man set foot on Aotearoa - New Zealand...
The land had always been daily touched by the new day’s sun... Tairawhiti... the tides that are shone upon; the coast upon which the sun shines across the water; the coast (tai) where the sun (rā) shines (whiti).
Therefore the obvious unifying factor for one and all... is the SUN ....as Gisborne’s unique POD... A primary point of difference from other cities around the world...
This was of course recognized with the recent year 2000 millennial celebration...

SundialsLet’s take our Sun to the next level by creating: ’many’ Sundials.
We of Gisborne city should simply take hold of our natural geographical blessing, the ‘SUN’ and create many Sundials throughout the city...

Create a ’UNIQUE’ citywide theme.
NOT simple concrete Plinths with small metal time-pieces embedded thereon...
BUT a city of creative design and concept with fresh thinking, to refresh our cityscape profile... ‘a fresh paradigm with the Sun’.
9
Sundials - ‘a fresh paradigm’
We do NOT need to build, at huge expense, the world’s largest Sundial - but merely use the Sundial concept throughout the city, creating many smaller Sundials, that will have much wider appeal than only one!
Especially, Human Sundials: As parks, reserves, schools, homes, business, corporates, rest homes, churches begin to embrace the concept - the momentum will gather to such an extent that we will have more than a mere TRAIL.
Reinforcing the ‘First City to see the Sun’ - being the ‘qualifying statement’ - of our geographical position.
‘First City to see the Sun!’

World First!NOTE: we have not been able to identify any one city on planet earth who have consciously endeavoured to market or brand their point of difference using Sundials - and few if any other city could make claim to be the: ‘First City to see the Sun’ Gisborne city can stake a genuine claim to this..
10
Human Sundials, as shown above, create and gift participatory experience. Practical, fun and educational.

Just as the City of Napier took hold of their POD (Point of Difference)... ... The Earthquake changing Cityscape...
From that - they set about creating and building an Art Deco theme... which now gives them a worldwide marketing brand.
Business, Corporates, Homes, are allinvolved.

Begin modestly with the young ones to seed the vision for the next generation.
Encourage each school to embrace and create human sundials >>>
To use the theme as part of their teaching syllabus to give the next generation familiarity with a unique part of their heritage - thus the citywide model would simply grow biologically and not be lost as a POD for Gisborne city.

Possible Beach conceptThis photo is merely an illustration to demonstrate
the variety of places around the city that Sundials could be considered. Nothing more than that.
Once established... it could easily become another tourist draw - opening a fresh niche market, many tourists are drawn to the Sun.
All Cultures could be encouraged to design a Sundial that expressed their uniqueness - Maori, European, Pacific Island, Asian and many others - all could design creatively from their heritage.
TOURS of the most interesting Sundials would be possible just like our city neighbour Napier - who develop annually - their Art Deco theme with tours.
Community Clubs such as Rotary and Lions and could be encouraged and challenged to build a Sundial to enhance our City.

Churches Churches could be encouraged to have a Sundial somewhere on their property in order to be part of the citywide theme.
ISAIAH 38: 6-9
6 And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city.
7 And this shall be a sign unto thee from the Lord, that the Lord will do this thing that he hath spoken;
8 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.
9 The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness:
The biblical story of King Hezekiah illustrates the blessing of a city and man when God demonstrated His power using a sundial as a visual sign of His ability and promise...
ie: A human Sundial could easily be placed at the corner of Roebuck and Norman Roads on the lawn setting
of the Gisborne Church of Christ

CostThe cost to city Ratepayers would NOT be excessive... The Cost - would not be out of reach - as fresh Sundials could be funded and budgeted for without undue stress - they would simply be added as and when funds were available ...meanwhile....
Individuals, business and corporates would be encouraged to creatively think outside the box and include simple or complex Sundials at their own discretion...
Many existing GDC city gardens & private gardens plus open areas could be used and/or modified without incurring exorbitant cost.
GDC led Annual Competition: For the most unique Sundial created each year in the city could be explored for creative ways to gain added value and retain the creative theme in the city.
Initially set up a GDC Taskforce to promote and lead the vision.

Basic constructionStand on the cement pad directly on top of the month.
You may need to raise your arm to make a shadow longer
Look at the shadow on the numbered blocks to see the time.
Be careful the Sundial shows standard time, so be sure to add an hour during the months that we observe Daylight Saving time.

22This beautiful “Sundial” - where a person stands in a position on the looped analemma marked on the ground slab (position depends on the time of year) and the person’s shadow will indicate the time based on the numbered stones. Far left is a conventional sundial.
The stone beyond (upper centre) bears a plaque with instructions but is not part of the sundial. Even without someone standing on the loop of the analemma, the discerning viewer can observe from the stone shadows that the image was taken between 1 pm and 2 pm. Gisborne City Sun

TASKFORCE: The initial suggestion would be to set up a Taskforce under the governance of the GDC in order that the Sundial concept be formally endorsed and under GDC oversight. This would enable the long term goal of creating a citywide theme to become a reality with long lasting generational buy in for the future with added value for our ‘First City to see the Sun’.

SUNDIAL - SCIENCE: The BIG Question/s eg: How has telling the time developed / improved over time * Design / make: simple to complex , small to large. * Explain how they work / move > Rotation - Sun / Solar System - Light * Experiment - Scientific Method. Make and read sundial at a specific time every day / few days / weeks
* Compare - Contrast / problem pose (what if ) Problem Solve - Sun / Clouds / Seasons / effects on telling time
* Read Sundial different times of the day: Discuss Shadow // what about night time?
* Hypothesis ( Scientific Method - to prove or disprove) eg: The speed of the Shadow depends on the length of the gnomon. May lead to more questions. eg: Is the length of shadow determined by seasons? Why or why not? Experiments to prove / disprove
SCIENCE: Technology Where to place Sundials? What to look for. Do Sundials work on: Equator / North - South Poles - Research / Discuss * Questions: Why do gnomons not point straight up? Where do they point? Human Sundials - make / create.
SOCIAL SCIENCE & Technology: (Old Term - Social Studies) * Sundials around the world. Why did people need to tell the time? * Timeline of notable Sundials. Oldest Sundial, biggest sundial, portable sundial etc. * Telling the time at night? * Shapes of Sundials - Cubic 1840 Ring Dial / Cadot 1680 Scape (Rome 100AD)
ENGLISH: Gisborne Advertising / Posters / Slogans * Report writing - factual / accounts * Kids can make Short Video Clip or Power Point Presentation explaination * Describing how Sundial works
ART: * Labelling / Posterising / Designing * Modeling / Materials / T-Shirts Icons

Education:© Intro. Brief - Teaching Paper - prepared by
Georgette Jenson as an initial ‘Sundial 101’ to illustrate the potential and educational value of
introducing Sundials to our Primary Schools as a fresh, fun, topic with wide educational benefit. Georgette Jenson: Won a National Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010.
She visits cities throughout NZ to help upskill teachers and believes this Sundial concept will make for great educational value - especially for Gisborne city: ‘first to see the sun’.

In Summary... This Human Sundial concept is a simple long lasting effective way to refresh the cityscape of Gisborne...
A shared enterprise across all sectors of the city including...
Business, Churches, CorporatesGardens & Clubs, GDC, HomesKGB, Parks & Reserves, SchoolsService Clubs, Tourism Eastland
Each can simply develop at their own pace to enhance the overall landscape of our city.
As previously mentioned - the City of Napier has proved beyond a shadow of doubt - that by taking the simple POD that already existed and letting it be their unifying factor -
to now become their major tourist attraction. Gisborne city simply need our GDC endorsement and leadership to emulate Napier’s success... but with Sundials.
Human Sundials, as shown above, create and gift participatory experience. Practical, fun and educational.
