Homecoming 2006 By Karissa Henderson and Zach Eppinette The sound of drums in the air, children lining the parade route, and floats making their way down streets. October was that time of year again for New Caney Homecoming. Activities included a Crazy Sock Day, Hawaiian Day, Col- lege Day, Mismatch Day, and Spirit Day. “The parade was magnificent,” said 10th grader Matthew Post. “The floats were very creative.” Following the parade, a pep rally was held in Ford Stadium. Organizations from throughout the school selected beaus and sweet- hearts that were escorted on the field and introduced to the crowd. Homecoming ended with a football game and dance. The Eagle football teamdid not qualify for the playoffs,but they had an exciting yearwith an explosive offense.The game against C.E.King proved that the Eagleshave the desire and determina-tion to be a contender for theplayoffs.The fans were kept onthe edge of their seats with eachteam matching each other pointfor point nearly the entiregame. With just over a minuteleft on the clock, C.E. Kingscored what was thought to bethe winning touchdown. On thenext kickoff however,Quaterback Phillip Welch ran it

all the way back and broughthome a victory. The final scorewas 37 to 40.

Eagle Tennis Qualifies For the Playoffs

This win left NewCaney with a 3-1 record indistrict.Welch top 4A pick in Texas Phillip Welch, quarterback/defensive back for the Eagleswas recognized as the BuiltFord Tough Texas High SchoolFootball Player of the Week. The award recognizes onestudent-athlete in six of thestate’s athletic classificationsevery week during the regularseason for their accomplish-ments on and off the field. Welch played a key role inthe team’s 40-37 win over C.E.King on October 20 when hecompleted 15 of 25 passes for

391 yards and three TDs andreturned a kickoff 90 yards forthe game-winning TD with 28seconds left in the game. “Phillip is a fine young manand athlete,” said coach JimTaylor. “He works hard andcompetes hard. Well 20 NewCaney students scored seats asthe studio audience for Channel11’s Great Day Houston morn-ing show during October. The show was hosted by 33year-old Whitney Casey. Ofcourse the students would nothave know her age if WhitneyCasey had not shared her ageon live TV. “I think it was a wonderfulexperience that gave me a greatinsight into the field of journal-ism,” said 10th grader Kayln

Mooney. The program began with alook at the relationships be-tween mothers and daughtersand ended with skin careadvice. Iris Krasnow, author of IAm My Mother’s Daughter,was a guest on the show. Therewere also mothers and daugh-

ters interviewed, includingCasey’s mother. “The field trip was exciting,”said 9th grader CrystalLangston. “It was a greatexperience and I’ve alwayswanted to be in a live TVaudience. I had a great timewith my classmates.” Freshman Shauna Starneswas the winner of a $250 skincare/makeup prize.

Presidential Honor Guard Performs Students from both campuses watched as the United States Army Presidential Honor Guarddemonstrated how to march and handle a rifle during October. The team accompanies the presidenton many trips and performs in public.
