Our team works very hard to deliver the excellent quality library services that New Canaanites expect and deserve! As you’ll see here, the community is using our library more than ever. Surprised? Not us. We know that innovative libraries are experiencing a true renaissance. As professionals, we are focused on a library for the future, responsive to shifts in community use and changing expectations. We have significantly increased technology training for the public, reconfigured our operations to try to satisfy the high demand for meeting spaces and we are creating fun,

collaborative learning experiences for all. Within these pages you will see how

our community continues to make great use of our traditional and digital services, borrowing books as well as digital materials at one of the highest rates in the State. New Canaanites are participating in programs, classes and workshops at record levels and using our meeting spaces more than ever before.

We believe that New Canaan Library is the center of inspiration and discovery in town for all ages. We will always seek to grow and change with the times and we will also continue to support the everyday needs of students, families and seniors which are a core part of our strategic mission.

There’s So Much Going On HereThe Library is the place to discover a new interest, learn a new skill and find a new passion. We make learning straightforward and efficient for everyone—whether it’s hands-on, listening to an expert, finding the right article or simply reading a book.

Our expert staff is here to serve you. And with community partners such as the Chamber of Commerce, New Canaan Cares, Silver Hill, the Glass House, and Stamford Hospital we have an expansive range of pro-fessionals sharing their expertise.

There are also art exhibitions, game nights, music, poetry readings, documentary films, beer brewing, novel writing workshops.

We keep the collections fresh and exciting and we invest in technology for

the public. This includes top quality Digital Displays, Portable 65" LCD screens, a program-mable Die Cut machine and more.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

T H E L I B R A R Y I N S P I R E S L E A R N I N G

14,000 children had fun learning in The Library. From Tales for Tots and Book Babies, through to Young Critics and Pizza and Pages, we supported the critical development of readers. Detectives in the Art Gallery and visits from the Orchestra and local theatre groups drew big crowds as we provided arts program-ming for our young learners.

STEAM programs are especially popular. From Kinder-Coding and

Scratch-Camp to Lego Robotics, Hero the Robot and 3D printing, families are making the most of our STEAM offerings. Engineers who happen to be 8 years old have been using our Hummingbird and Makey-Makey gear to build robots from found objects, while others have learned cartooning and computer animation.

This year The Library brought top-notch speakers to town including:

• Bob Lord, Chief Digital Officer at IBM on digital innovation

• Linda Fairstein, former Manhattan prosecutor turned author

• Franklin Perrell, art historian specialist on the art Edward Hopper

• Lynsey Addario, photojournalist on the conflict zones of North Africa and the Middle East

• Andrea Wulf, historian on Von Humboldt and his influence on modern science

New Canaan Library supports the entire community providing meeting space for more than 7,000 residents last year, study space for thousands, as well as extended opening hours at exam time. We support individuals and small businesses with public access computers, free Wi-Fi, faxing and printing.

We host several fundraising events during the year. Last year for our 8th Literary Luncheon, Anthony Doerr joined us to talk about his Pulitzer Prize winner: All the Light We Cannot See. In February, we enjoyed the uproariously funny Ali Wentworth at our Ladies Night out event, and in the spring, hundreds of New Ca-naanites turned up for Books and Beats an outdoor evening event of food, music and fun.

When my senior (high school) internship landed me at New Canaan Library, I

wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The Library has always been a great place for doing research, and the fun place for midterm prep, but only some of us knew how much more it has to offer. This summer’s

internship gave me the chance to learn new skills when

I participated in the Oral History project, and insight into how forward thinking our Library is in terms of technology and programs. As I head off to college, my advice to other New Canaan teens is to make the most of this great resource you have right here in town.

Bringing The Library to the New Canaan Inn keeps our seniors connected to the community, engaged in lively

discussions and empowered with new thoughts and ideas. Every month Kathy Blance comes to the Inn with a program called “Let’s Talk.” (And talk we do!) She chooses a topic and supports it with bags of books, photos, posters, and newspaper

clippings. Her subjects range from “Late

Bloomers and Unlikely Successes” to “Bad Days in History: Epic Fails and Historic Blunders.” Our residents, in their 80’s and 90’s, flock to her programs.

s we’ve shown through these pages, our Library is a dynamic, evolving and growing cornerstone of our community. There’s so much going on here, and there’s even more we’d like to do.

For families, we will grow our STEAM learning opportunities, we will include more coding, engineering and robotics, more book groups and programs for our tweens.

We will increase our programming and

experiential learning for all of our community.

We’ll continue to work with more partners. We will continue to manage our collection to keep it fresh and relevant. We

will continue to serve our community with excellence and commitment.

And most exciting of all, we are working to expand

our building to meet the needs and demands of our community. No longer will children be turned away from programs because there isn’t enough space in the children’s room. No longer will we have to put a cap on an audience because The Library simply isn’t big enough. We’re going to increase space for people to work and meet.

Imagine more reading areas, open spaces, state of the art auditoriums and

lecture rooms. Imagine a perfect

arrangement and display of our collections. If you can imagine it —we can create it.
