Our HistoryWhere we came from, where we’re going

Mactech Engineering and Inspection Ltd is a family run and operated business, founded in1986 by an experienced management team from the nuclear, quality assurance andconstruction sectors. We have many years’ experience in power, new build and energyprojects around the world.

We began with the supply of inspection services and quality surveillance and recognisedthe need to provide our clients with quality support in the form of sub contract personnelfrom the engineering and construction sectors. This enabled our clients to man-up largerprojects from a fast, flexible manpower base with a wide range of substantial experienceof engineering and construction projects.

We have provided our services globally in all five continents; from nuclear stations all overEurope to pipelines in India, to offshore installations in Brazil, and construction projects inthe Middle-East.

Since 1986 Mactech has developed an excellent infrastructure; our teams of coretechnicians and supervisors, inspectors and managers can be deployed anywhere in theworld.

We supply construction, engineering and inspection personnel as well as quality and NDTinspection services to the oil, gas and power sectors worldwide. We focus extensively onconstruction through the entire EPC process – fabrication, installation, inspection andcommissioning. Mactech has operated on this project for 4 years and in this timewe have built up an excellent network of partners and suppliersthat specialise in new build nuclear services for manpower,materials, project and construction database managementsystems, inspection/reporting procedures and consultancy.

Supply of personnel for the complete chain of QA/QC surveillance,from QA/QC management to inspectors for the mechanicalinstallation and erection.

NDT project management and supervision (oversight of all NDTsub-contractors).

3rd party/expediting inspection of sub contractors providingmaterial and pipework to site.

Supply of experienced piping, lifting and mechanical supervision forerection and commissioning activities.

Supply of onsite document control and review services fordatabase management and completions control.

Supply of a variety of welding, NDT and pipework supervisors andinspectors.

OLK3 is the first EPR design of its kind to be built in Europe, and isrenowned as a high profile project throughout the Europeannuclear community. Mactech has been supplying the followingservices to this project:

Simon Gould – Operations Manager18 years experience in mechanical erection, installation and commissioning on majornew build construction sites worldwide. Seven years experience on the EDF nuclearstation fleet in the UK. Three years experience operating on Olkiluoto 3 new buildnuclear station in Finland. Experienced in strategic business management and siteconstruction activities. Holds various HSE, mechanical erection and qualityqualifications.

Olaf Hoelscher – QA/QC ManagerOver 12 years experience in NDT coordination, controlling, management and supervisionon nuclear sites in Europe. Experience in new build nuclear power stations in Finland, theNetherlands and Germany. Currently operating in the role of site QA/QC manager on theOlkiluoto 3 project in Finland. Extensive site management expertise and holds multi-disciplined inspection qualifications that are internationally recognised.

Andreas Liehm – Head of Projects (worldwide)25 years experience in managing, developing and building inspection service companies inEurope. Extensive NDT and nuclear experience operating on a variety of nuclear andpower projects in Europe. Andreas holds multi-disciplined inspection and weldingqualifications that are internationally recognised.

Kevin McFarlane – ChairmanOwner and founder of the business, who has over 35 years management, inspection andrecruitment experience in the nuclear and construction sectors. From site projectmanagement (hands on) to senior business management expertise. Prior to startingMactech, Kevin was a professional nuclear inspector, and he has operated on most ofthe major stations and new build projects throughout Germany and the Netherlands.

Andrew McFarlane – Managing DirectorOver 15 years experience in management, inspection and recruitment to the energy sectorsin Europe and worldwide. Including seven years working on EDF nuclear fleet stations inthe UK and three years operating on Olkiluoto 3 new build nuclear station in Finland. Holdsa master degree in Business Administration (MBA) and various HSE and managementqualifications.

QSB was founded by Mr Andreas Liehm in 2001, and with Mr OlafHoelscher, the business commenced work for large inspectorates inEurope providing NDT development packages and inspection servicessolutions to the nuclear, power and energy sector. In this period thebusiness operated on nuclear NPP units where QSB were involved withnew build programmes as well as maintenance and replacement ofcomponents with associated documentation and reporting services.Some of the nuclear sites that they operated on were as follows:-

Finally, they operated on the Olkiluoto 3 new build nuclear powerstation project in Finland where they were involved in the completecontrol and management of NDT and supervision for the construction ofLOTs 2 and 3.

In 2010 Mr Andreas Liehm sold his business to Dekra Material Testing,Germany, the leading inspection services organisation in Europe. Sincethen Mr Andreas Liehm and Mr Olaf Hoelscher, having worked veryclosely on the OLK3 project with Mactech, have come onboard with theMactech UK senior management team to develop our new build nuclearservices business worldwide. Mr Liehm and Mr Hoelscher areresponsible for managing all international projects in the nuclear powersector worldwide.
