April 8, 2018

Sunday of Divine Mercy Jesus, I Trust in You

On this Second Sunday, or Octave Day of Easter we celebrate God’s boundless mercy. On that first Octave Day of Easter, the Risen Lord Jesus appeared to his apostles in the locked room where they were hiding in fear. His first words to them were, “Peace be with you.” Then he showed them his pierced hands and side. The apostles very likely recalled the prophecy of Isaiah, “He was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed” (Isaiah 53:5). St. Peter later quoted Isaiah in his letter, “By his wounds you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Those wounds of Christ point to the merciful love of God that lies behind the whole Paschal Mystery – the mys-tery of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ – made present for us in the Eucharist. In this way, it also sums up the meaning of the Easter Octave. Pope Saint John Paul II pointed out in his Regina Caeli address on Divine Mercy Sunday, 1995, “The whole octave of Easter is like a single day” and the Octave Sunday is meant to be the day of “thanksgiving for the goodness God has shown to man in the whole Easter mystery.” Saint Faustina Kowalska was a Polish nun who lived from 1905-1938. She received private revelations from Our Lord concerning God’s divine mercy. Jesus appeared to St. Faustina with rays of red and pale white light streaming from the area around his heart. His right hand was raised in blessing, recalling the scene on Easter Sunday night (see John 20:19-23). He asked St. Faustina to have this vision painted along with the words, “Jesus, I trust in You!” This painted image is known as the Image of Divine Mercy. We have this image in our church in the Mercy Chapel, just behind my confessional. Feel free to go there and pray in front of this image of God’s mercy. The Divine Mercy Chaplet is a powerful prayer to pray for the conversion of sinners. Also, when a loved one is dying, pray the chaplet at their bedside, so that they be received into the merciful arms of Jesus.

A plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions (sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on the Second Sunday of Easter or Divine Mercy Sunday, in any church or chapel, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, take part in the prayers and devotions held in honor of Divine Mercy, or who, in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, recite the Our Father and the Creed, adding a devout prayer to the merciful Lord Jesus (e.g. “Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!”) A plenary indulgence is: “A remission before God of the temporal punish-ment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1471). Divine Mercy devotions are being held at our neighboring parishes today: Immaculate Conception, Columbia Heights: 3:00-4:00pm – Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament; 3:15-3:45pm – Confession, prayers, chaplet, fellowship St. Charles, St. Anthony: 2:00-2:45pm – Confessions; 3:00pm – Devotions For other Divine Mercy devotions around the Archdiocese, visit: http://thecatholicspirit.com/divinemercy/

From the Pastor: Father Michael Skluzáček

Your spiritually adopted baby is now in the seventh month. Beginning this month the baby uses all four senses. Eyelids open and close and the eyes look around. The baby can taste, touch, cough, yawn and hiccup. He or she now recognizes his or her moth-er’s voice. His or her grip is even stronger

now than it will be after birth. The hair on the head is growing longer and the downy covering on the rest of the body is disappearing. During this time the baby will receive antibodies from his or her mother providing im-munity to a wide variety of diseases. View your baby’s growth and development at the Spiritual Adoption Table in St. Paul Plaza.
