MOLON LABE• 480 BC, the Persian Army, led by King Xerxes set out to
conquer all of Greece• Greece was a country divided, made up on individual city-
states• The Spartans, led by King Leonidas, and the Athenians, led
by Themisticles, sought to unify the Greek people against the Persians
• Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors, backed up by men from other Greek city-states, were able to hold off the Persians for seven days, despite being outnumbered 10-1
• The Greeks were able to to withstand the massive Persian army through superior preparation, teamwork, determination and pride.
MOLON LABE• Despite eventually being defeated, the effort of the
Spartans inspired the populous of Greece and helped to unify the once divided land, allowing them to eventually defeat Xerxes and the Persians.
• Before the battle of Thermopylae, King Leonidas and the Spartans were offered great concessions from Xerxes to just walk away from the battle. They would be treated as equals to the Persians and would be given better land than they already had.
• King Leonidas refused this offer, not being willing to give up the traditions that had made Sparta so great
• The Persians pressed further and ordered the Spartans to lay down their weapons or face certain death.
MOLON LABE• To the Persians order to lay down their weapons, King
Leonidas famously responded “Molon Labe”, which means “Come and Get Them”.
• This response kicked off the battle of Thermopylae and rewrote the history of Western Civilization
• An ancient monument still stands at Thermopylae with the only inscription on it being “Molon Labe”
• MOLON LABE is an attitude and describes how we approached offseason, spring training, summer training and how we will approach every opponent in 2013.
• If they want what we got, they are gonna have to come and get it!
