Immune response and the eye

volume editors: JY Niederkorn, HJ. Kaplan

OPHTHALMOLOGY 120 NIE

The second edition of "Immune Response and the Eye" highlights recent insights into

the 'dangerous compromise' between the immune system and the eye, which

protects the eye against pathogens while limiting inflammation and immune-

mediated injury to ocular tissues with little or no regenerative potential. It discusses

the broad spectrum of physiological, immunological, anatomical, and biochemical adaptations that conspire

to closely regulate the tone and tenor of immune responses in the eye. This volume further describes

immune-mediated diseases that occur when the compromise between the immune system and the eye is

breached. This breakdown in immune privilege threatens the vision of millions each year. Finally, recent

advances in ocular immunology are presented, which offer potential therapeutic applications in corneal

and retinal transplantation and in the management of blinding autoimmune diseases of the eye. Eye

researchers, ophthalmologists and immunologists will appreciate the state-of-the-art and authoritative

information presented in "Immune Response and the Eye".

Mastery of Holcomb C3-R crosslinking for Keratoconus and other disorders : for

patients and physicians

BS Boxer Wachler

OPHTHALMOLOGY 180 WAC

Keratoconus is degeneration of the structure of the cornea. The cornea is the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. In keratoconus, the shape of the cornea slowly changes from round to conical (PubMed Health). In the early stages, keratoconus can be corrected with the use of lenses, but in the later stages, surgery is the only option.

Holcomb C3-R® is a non-surgical technique that involves placing drops of the vitamin Riboflavin into the eye and using a UV light to activate them. The drops strengthen the fibres of the cornea and over time, preserve sight (American Keratoconus Association). This book is a concise guide to the technique of Holcomb C3-R® to treat keratoconus. Authored by the inventor of the procedure, Brian S Boxer Wachler, the text is based on his first hand clinical experience and explains the history and basic science of cross linking, the development and naming of the technique, its uses and complications, and first patient results.

eye, nanotechnology and gene therapy. Edited by Frank Joseph Goes of the Goes Eye Centre in Belgium, this multi-authored book has contributions from specialists throughout Europe, as well as the USA. 830 full colour images and illustrations assist comprehension.

Good news from Switzerland : a history of retinal reattachment surgery Peter

Leaver, Richard Keeler

OPHTHALMOLOGY 20 LEA

The statement by Frank Juler, distinguished London ophthalmologist, in the British Journal of Ophthalmology in February 1930, Good news from Switzerland...a new method of surgical intervention holds out hope of a lasting cure of retinal detachment , heralded a momentous advance in ophthalmic surgery. Nowhere in the field of modern medicine worldwide, has the invention of a new surgical technique had a

more profound effect on the lives of sufferers than the ignipuncture operation described by Jules Gonin in Lausanne. In subsequent decades, significant modifications, adaptations and improvements in the surgical method transformed the prognosis for patients with retinal detachment. Initially these were mainly

Page 6: New books: February 2014 - University College London books February 2014.pdf · various diseases including glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. Edited by Manfred Zierhut,

6

wrought by surgeons in Europe. Following the Second World War, however, there was a marked change in direction towards advances made in the United States. This brief account, written in a freely narrative style, attempts to encompass and capture the struggles, innovations and triumphs achieved by retinal surgeons, from Gonin, the father of retinal reattachment surgery, to the vitreo-retinal specialists of today. The text is accompanied by a profusion of photographs, drawings and paintings, most of which have not been seen before. The bibliography is sufficiently comprehensive to enable the interested reader, if he or she so wishes, to explore the subject in greater depth. The authors have combined to use their own quite different perspectives to tell the story of retinal reattachment surgery, from the time when retinal detachment meant certain blindness, to the very favourable outlook that is the case today. They are not aware of a more comprehensive account of this fascinating story, and hope that readers will share the same sense of excitement and delight as they themselves have experienced during the course of their research.

OPHTHALMOLOGY 240 TOS

Cataracts are a very common condition whereby the lens of the eye becomes cloudy causing blurred vision. Over time, a cataract can get worse, eventually leading to blindness if untreated. Cataracts are the most common cause of blindness worldwide. Phacoemulsification surgery is the most widely used method for cataract management. Simplified Phacoemulsification is a step by step guide to the complete

technique of phacoemulsification. Beginning with an introduction to the anatomy and development of the lens, patient selection and the phacoemulsification machine used in the procedure, the following chapters describe the complete process from anaesthesia, suturing and incision, through the different basic and technical aspects of the technique. The final section examines instruments used for phaco surgery. Written in an easy to read, short note format, this comprehensive manual includes more than 280 full colour images and figures to enhance learning.

Emergencies in neuro-ophthalmology : a case based approach

Andrew G Lee

OPHTHALMOLOGY 350 LEE

The management of emergent neuro-ophthalmic conditions can be a life-saving encounter for the general ophthalmologist. This book covers life-threatening scenarios that a general ophthalmologist might encounter, and is designed to help the ophthalmologist make emergency triage decisions for initial evaluation and treatment of potentially vision- or life-threatening conditions. This book is case based, and provides the reader with the invaluable expert views of two neuro-ophthalmologists.

One, Dr Lee is an ophthalmology-based neuro-ophthalmologist and the other, Dr Brazis is a neurology-based neuro-ophthalmologist. Dr Mughal and Dr Policeni collected and collated the case vignettes during their fellowship with Dr Lee at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This textbook provides a concise, easy to read, and practical guide to the emergent evaluation of neuro-ophthalmic conditions. It is designed to be a quick read and not to be all-inclusive or comprehensive. The reader is directed to longer and more comprehensive neuro-ophthalmic texts for this information. It is also not the aim of the book to provide information on anatomy, pharmacology, physiology, or other basic mechanisms of disease. Instead, this text is meant to be a quick reference and resource for the clinician in the emergency room or in the clinic facing a potentially vision- or life-threatening emergency and to provide immediate guidance for potentially high stakes decision making. The case vignettes are based upon real clinical cases but the clinical details of
